    "How? You are my grandson. How can I not listen to you and be elevated by you?" When we hear leaders giving hate speech when the young are calling for unity and accountablity we know how far we have strayed from humanity. This is a beautiful interview. This is how the world should be.

      @oslo15 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      This struck me as well. “You are my grandson.” It proves her earlier remark that what allowed her to do what she did, and think how she did, was love. Her capacity for loving and respecting others was so great, she couldn’t help but be the icon so many looked-and continue to look-to as a model for what their lives should be.

      It was my favorite part, because it was when their opinions were diametrically opposed and there could have been somewhat of a conflict. Dave’s comedy is a lot of n word this n word that. She could have just taken the position of the great elder who can’t be questioned, but she’s wiser than that, she understood that there was truth in what Dave was saying as well, that even if they disagreed, they could both be right, and that she could learn something from him. That shows you she’s not just someone who’s revered for nothing, she’s truly a great mind.

    As a little white girl raised from age 4 to 12 in the deep South and aware and confused by what I witnessed and heard, I appreciated so much what Maya Angelou says about anger. I went back to the South in 1963. At age 72 I still have deep anger which emerges when someone denies the experiences of history and herstory. This video is profound! It will benefit anyone who sees it. Lets show it in the schools of our country.

      QJAndra How does one “atone” for mistakes? There is no way. Some words can never be atoned for. In fact, to believe that they can be atoned for is to belittle the power of words. Instead, one must change their thoughts. Words and actions will follow. All we can do is ask someone to change. Not to “rectify mistakes”, for no mistake can be fully rectified. We must instead think, speak and act in a manner in which to make the world in line with our new thought patterns.

    • @chrisbessey358
      @chrisbessey358 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      QJAndra I suppose you’re right. If anything is even close to true atonement, it is the atonement of the mind.

    What's very inspiring about Dave is his consciousness. He could have had a rise and fall without his control, riding the waves just to make more money until people just didn't find him funny anymore, but him simply saying he knew things weren't right when someone laughed DIFFERENTLY? I mean... this is a man that knows his craft. And when he smells BS, he knew to walk away. Not many of us can do that, and my appreciation for him grows.

    Worth watching for so many reasons but her story about breaking up a fight between Tupac Shakur and another man on the set of Poetic Justice and going up to him and saying, “....do you know how important you are?” and reminding of what it took for him to be there and when she was done he was in tears. She tells the story with no ego. Later his mother writes Angelou a letter telling her she might have saved his life. She calls him a soul mate:)
    Dave is deep. He is in control. Even the silence between them is comfortable....

Dr. Angelou can make you feel every word that she said, I understand Dave saying he was scared to talk to her lol, but he is incredibly perceptive, an honest and therefore amazing comedian, and their interaction really worked. How amazing for Dave to meet someone with such a foundation in black arts, poetry, and history. Just amazing

    Thank you so much for your humility Dave. This is an iconic moment and your wisdom and ability to think, say No, when it counts the most, says a lot about you. Understanding that freedom cannot ever be bought, and betrayal to self is far more painful. One actually liberates oneself, when they give something up for their freedom. Exercising the right to choose, is the most liberating thing one can do, more than any sum of money. Freedom is within and self love and respect is priceless.

And how Maya and Dave have shared so much positive feedback in mind, body, soul and spirit from each other that day. Both shining a light in one another's soul. This is part of the circle of life. This is how it should always be; leading each other to clarity, greatness, understanding, love, calm, caring and eloquence.

    I think Maya was telling him she understood his struggle with fortune. People were saying "Why would you give up money? Now that screws it up for the rest of us" but Maya knew that with some people like Dave he just couldnt cross that line, if he did compromise his integrity it would have made him unhappy. So its neither here nor there. His decision worked for him and he should not have regrets. He has peace of mind regardless of popular consensus.

    • @TheLineCutter
      @TheLineCutter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Angie L Exactly. I was figuring out what exactly she was saying at 32:57. The line was if I heared correctly: ' People will say: damn J' you're giving this up? They mean I'm not making this money, because you've given it up'. It reverses the guilt that Dave will have felt for making his decision. She puts it in the right perspective for him. Damn what a great woman. And you feel Dave his gratitude to her for saying it.
