- Jack Kowalski recalled one doctor telling him, 'I don't know what's wrong with her,' as they dealt with his daughter Maya's severe and chronic pain. The Kowalski family is suing Johns Hopkins Hospital for $200 million for a misdiagnosis that led to the mother's suicide.

Part of this tragedy was the fact that as a family member who was also a health care professional (RN) the mom was immediately met with the "patriarchal" disdain that still runs rampant in the medical community. How dare these parents know their child the best, and are doing THEIR "due diligence"?!!

She's such a beautiful girl and her family all seem like lovely people. It's so unfortunate that she has a disease that makes her suffer so much. I can't imagine not being able to predict how much pain your going to be in day to day everyday.
I have similar issues with my diagnosis and you’re right- it’s aweful and honestly terrifying when you’re suffering and those caring for you or anyone in your life dismissing your issues and not treating you is terrifying. I’ve only had one doctor do that but it messed with me for months. Yes and you can’t really predict if you’ll be having a good or bad day. Very hard to make plans or be reliable. It’s somewhat normal for those that aren’t medical professionals to dismiss but this particular situation is a total nightmare for a person who has a serious condition and with pain dis regulation. You can’t “see” pain necessarily. Though this obviously not the fault of Maya in any way - would be so complex dealing with the guilt you would feel that is of no fault of your own. Seriously hope they get taken care of for life. It won’t bring mom back - it’s the least they can do to right the situation somehow.
@@ilenhalogram it seems to me and equally horrible part is all the stress of having the public involved between the hospital's the doctors the nurses the lawyers your parents then credible stress on the marriage it's all just so horrible

It's a condition that's rare in children. Just seemed odd that mom had her undergo a Ketamine coma induced protocol not approved in the US in 2015. Imo that was a huge gamble she took
@@sunshine22723 just because something is not FDA approved, does not mean that it's not safe. Many things that are FDA approved are unsafe, like opioid medication. No one has ever died from a ketamine overdose, but many people have died from opioid use.
I can see this trial is taking a toll on Maya. She doesn't look well enough to even be there.

I was flicking through Australian magazine new idea yesterday. There’s this well known Australian author Tara moss who has CRPS too and now lives in Canada and says that she is now cured from the terrible disease. There is definitely hope out there for people who suffer from it.
Sounds like fibromyalgia…which I have and it’s not easy at all! My muscles use to “jump” under my skin. It took years to be diagnosed! None of those medications would work!
My shins hurt so bad nothing can touch them and other times they don’t hurt at all!

I saw the movie “Take Care of Maya” and my heart broke for this family, especially the mother, Beata Kowalski.
I sure hope and pray this John Hopkins hospital/medical center immediately took the necessary actions to prevent anymore horrific situations as this one from EVER happening in the future.
Does anyone, who has followed this case before or after seeing the movie, know what happened to the nurse who was in charge of the staff caring for Maya? My prayers continue for the family of Maya and Beata Kowalski”.
I searched a little bit and only found some info about Catherine Bedy - she is still working as a social worker and does counseling. After what she did to this family, taking a pictures of Maya against her will and before that being sued for an a**SE of a 10 year old boy. Outrageous

One suspicious person that mentioned, dare mentioned Munchausen’s, everyone RAN WITH IT without really investigating. The Mom likely pissed someone off, hurt an ego and it was game on from there!!

I don't know what happened to the nurse but I'm hoping that Sally Smith loses her license and is never able to work as a doctor again. EVIL BRUTE.
Watching this case make me re-living my times in the hospital with my child who has sickle cell. I always thought the government needs to do something with this situation because unfortunately as I nurse, or even a doctor, we can go to prison for negligence. At one point I wanted to put my child into hospice because it was so painful to watch your child suffer. Now my child is in his thirties and happy I did not give up. Please authorities, let us take care of our children without interference.

I haven't caught all of the trial. So, what should the correct diagnosis have been?
Also, seems the dad should be more informed about dates/events asked by his lawyer. If suing someone, your answers probably shouldn't be "I don't know" (when there is a clear, easy answer).
It sounds like the hospital had the diagnosis from previous visits, but this time didn't look her up in their database. Confused about that. Called due diligence

CrPS is Maya's correct diagnosis. I don't agree with your critique of Maya's dad. Do you have any idea what all he has been through? I don't know how he keeps track of all that he does. Plus this was 7 to 8 years ago.
Amazing for the time they we're handing out pain meds like water.This is what they made it for right.
Sadly, Dad is not the best witness as his knowledge is deficient to truly present a descriptive statement for the jury which can best illustrate what medical issues were occurring because her Mum was in fact the main caregiver but also medically versed as a registered nurse. I feel for him because he is out of his depth - kinda wish the lawyers could have done some prep work with him although he has had far too much on his plate.
For as much as I feel sorry for Maya, this case is empathetic/emotive, the hospital is guilty whatever the facts and will be vilified by people who really do not want to hear both sides of the argument and this includes the court tv anchors. I know this much it makes for boring tv.

I’m not saying that the parents had munchausen’s by proxy, but I can see why the medical teams were concerned. I’m the parents desperation to help their daughter, they jumped from hospital to hospital and then went to another country-Mexico- for treatment. Again, not blaming but that does raise red flags.

There are cameras everywhere in a hospital. There is no expectation of privacy when you go in to a public hospital. Cant believe all the naive people out there. Wish id grown up so Vanilla and sheltered

There is absolutely an expectation of privacy in a hospital, it’s a federal law called HIPAA.

A hospital IS THE PLACE WHERE YOU HAVE ABSOLUTE PRIVACY ABOUT WHY YOUR THERE, WHAT YOUR CONDITION IS, HOW IT IS TREATED. AND WHO YOU WANT KNOW ABOUT IT OR DON'T. ITS CALLED HIPPA. I don't know how some people have decided this case already. Don't people care about learning all of the facts first from both sides? That documentary never should have been aired before trial. People watch it then they're biased and emotional.
I do not believery single person that has been mentioned at this hospital is rude and mean. Not one nice thing to say about anyone. Doesn't anybody find that extremely odd?
I also believe that it was odd, Mr. K seemed to be jovial and smiling with the jury during direct, but not so much during cross. I think the defense made a bit of headway in impeaching him.
I want to believe them!! And I seen the documentary.. and it’s sad, it made me cry and I feel like she sacrificed herself so they can release her daughter, and the ones we seen on the documentary were very nasty cold hearted people, I remember asking myself did any of them have children of there own,it was mentioned she was a straight forward person and she might have offended someone, and I feel like them nurses felt like we can offend you better than you can offend us,the state owns her now bye!!! That’s basically what happened, But after watching this trail, I noticed that she always seem to be sick, when it’s a big event going on, and you can tell the father party’s like a rock star, just from his demeanor, he should have used his wife’s notes for court,he had seven years to study it, But the fire truck coming to get you off the plane 😏His birthday she sick, the big block parade!!! She gets sick,but maybe it’s the anxiety of being around so many people, don’t know
@scarlityoungblood5662 I did not watch the documentary. But I think, if people would use critical thinking skills instead of emotion, they would see there is a lot more to this story.

I have not watched the documentary, i have ample experience with children. A child will act different with a parent than a stranger. They are more comfortable with the parent and will show their true feelings. They will withhold that with a stranger. long term this will take a toll on their health never being able to relax and be cared for by a parent. These people responsible for taking this child away from her parents are cold and heartless. And should not ever be in a position involving families or children. In fact they should be in prison for what they did. Of course this mother was taking more responsibility for her daughters care. She is a nurse her self. She had already been prescribed that medication she was asking for by other doctors. Why would she not ask for something that had already worked. Mayas mother was an excellent mother who ran into evil people. She didn't cop out, she gave her life for her daughters life to be returned to her family. I wish she would have saw another way, unfortunately she didn't. Maya, this was not your fault, you did nothing wrong. I'm sorry this happened to you
I had surgery and the nurses wouldn't walk me, they later came in my room and yelled at me for not walking. They were supposed to give me a lap belt but didn't. They were rude. A older lady I knew was in the same hospital a few weeks later and she said they yelled at her because she had nightmares from medication. These nurses are not the same like they used to be years ago. I think they're there for a paycheck and not because they care about people.

It literally says in the first paragraph, she will go to outpatient therapy and pain will be managed for 3-4 weeks for "symptoms expected with steroid induced myopathy" Major history of asthma, she goes on steroids, (been there) and she develops pain, the doctor says "normal" here is some physio...is anyone blaming all this on steroids? Should I go to Med school? Be like House guy👀
