I have 2 possible explanations for this: The Apple Vision was possessed by some spirit and afected every person that was seen with it. That's why the mother was the only one affected. Or there was already a entity on the house wich possessed the mother and the Apple Vision was only showing it to the child.
or MAYBE this was the night before Kevin went missing, because the entity might of kidnapped Kevin like how Oliver was when his dad locked him in the room with the stuffed animal

Since it couldn't possess the body of someone alive it needed the body of someone dead....So the Entity or Spirit manipulated the Apple Vision Pro to mess with boys mind which leads to the boy unintentionally killing his mother and while the boy still has the Apple Vision Pro on his face then the entity or spirit quickly possessed the mom's body. Now the entity is free to do what they want and the first thing they want to do is get rid of the boy but hey this is my theory or at least how I interpret the story. The child killed his mother and somehow cut off his legs, and even the shot of the mother stomping his face on the ground is from the child’s imagination, simply because of his use of the glasses for a long time, real life mixed with Virtual life

I think the apple vision pro actually helped him see the true form of the monster pretending to be his mom to gain his trust even tho vr glasses are supposed to show fake stuff. The ending got me confused because it looks like she was normal from our point of view but when he stabbed her the twist was she was a monster. So it got me thinking could he have been sent to another reality or just a twist for the spooks
