How to install a pipe flashing on an existing shingled roof

    This video shows the process that I use to install a pipe flashing into an existing shingled roof. Sometimes I don't exactly know where I want to make a penetration through the roof decking for a plumbing vent until after the shingles are installed. I use this method quite a bit, actually. It may take a few more minutes than if you installed during the roofing installation, but it's not that big of a deal. I like this Oatey pipe flashing because you can replace the rubber gasket that seals around the pipe. Over time, weather in general, puts wear on the flexibility of the seal and can dry out and crack...thus creating a leak. But, with this type flashing changing out the gasket is a breeze. You don't have to replace the entire thing which can lead into more work (shingle repair) especially on older shingled roofs which tend to get brittle over time. So, if you haven't' used this type, I recommend that you try it out.
    This is not a sponsored video. These are the products that I have chosen for the best results possible for this particular project. But, if anyone would like to sponsor W.K.D. Construction to use their products...then by all means, contact me! If I use a certain product, it's for a good reason. I stand behind all of my work and the products I install.

    Good video. I would have applied tar to those lower nails at a minimum. Too close to the shingle edges, and possible water/rust erosion for my liking. I may also have sealed around the shingle cut out for an extra barrier against lateral water movement.
    Keep up the good work.

    I like to watch videos like this occasionally as a reminder that no matter how much we as humans tend to think we have conquered nature, we still live in huts made out of sticks and mud with holes cut in top to let the poop smell out.

    How long this rubber gasket lasts? Would it be better use the cap made from lead and fold that lead cap edge into the pipe?

      There’s nothing wrong with using a sawzall for this…..if they were to mess it up using a sawzall then honestly they would have be just as likely to screw it up with a hole saw.

      @@Eastbaypisces the same steps yes, except for the piece that sticks up through the roof. I am not super familiar with ABS but what I have read it’s not very good when exposed to the elements. I would guess pvc needs to protrude through the roof? No silicone is needed if boot is installed and the job is done correctly.

    How do you get it underneath that many rows of shingles with a 3-foot stub out in cast iron that's pre installed?

  • @TheBrandonHazel
    @TheBrandonHazel 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My problem is that rubber piece will not last 100 years. So when heavy rains come you can still get a small leak around that pipe. Installing after the roof was done makes me cringe because The metal flashing should be under the ice and water shield on the top half.
    Call it ugly all you want but I'd rather vent plumbing out the side of the house. One less hole in the roof makes me sleep better at night. Just my two cents.

    • @w.k.d.constructionllc
      @w.k.d.constructionllc  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The shingles won’t last 100 years either. The rubber is replaceable and is easy to do so. The wood sheathing is waterproof so no additional ice/water shield needed. Ya, I wouldn’t dare vent one out the side
