- WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY TIMING CHAIN. HOW LONG TIMING CHAIN LASTS
Many of you asked us how often timing chain needs to be replace and how long timing chains last. It really depends on the vehicle, make, and model. For instance some older model vehicles equipped with timing chain do not require timing chain replacement but since 2007 we have worked on so many cars with timing chain problems. Our last 2 vehicles that we worked on were Mazda CX7 and BMW that develop timing chain problem at only 87k miles. I prefer to replace my timing chains between 60k and 100k miles on every car we own. It really depends on the model. If you replace the timing chain always use the whole kit.

2016 toyota sienna, with 100200k on it!! should I change it?? 😭😭😭
I wish you could speak english!
Timing chains do stretch as well as tensioner weaken .
The big giveaway before total failure is engine oil leaking from crank shaft pulley . If you are replacing the pulley and when you loosen the pulley bolt and oil squirts out , you have a timing chain and gear problem . The gear will slap around a damage the woodruff key and the crankshaft key way that is allowing oil to leak out under pressure.
More likely the engine service intervals (oil change and filter) will affect the timing chain and tensioner more than anything else. Find out how often the vehicles are serviced before blaming the chain. They rely on clean quality oil to operate to maximum efficiency and lifespan.
If you have to change the timing chain at 60 K miles, then its life span is no different from that of a timing belt. Which means there is absolutely no advantage in having a timing chain over a timing belt.
Its just to get you to spend more money
Exactly
i own a sx4 hatch back i have a noise. i am told timing chain. but another person told me its not my timing chain. tak tak noise what causes that
I actually find chains easier to replace than belts.
@@AdamGithyanki Replacing a chain shouldn't be more expensive than a belt replacement.
You dont need to change timing chain at all just take care of oil change thats all
change the oil more often and chains will last longer.. on my Opel I went 340.000km with first chain and tensioner..then I only replaced it because the head was broken... it showed no visible wear, chain was as new and would have lastes a lot longer.. chains also only little wear..two other cars in the family with over 200.000km and first chain
I'm having to replace the timing chain at 294k miles and it may have only bee changed once before by previous owners. That's impressive, but also indicates good oil maintenance.
This is too funny.
If you choose to wait for your engine light to tell you when to change your oil and you have a heavy foot you might have to change your chain in 40,000 miles.
I have a 2012 Honda Civic and have always changed the oil at 8000 kms which is usually 60% oil life left. I could get 16 to 18k before changing oil but I'm not stupid enough to do that to my car. 350,000 kms later 0 problems with the chain.
sir what are the symtoms of bad timing Chain?
The valve cover you took off the engine is very dirty and full of deposits. The timing chain/guides failed due to customer not changing the oil and filter per maintenance schedule.
Timing tensions 95% fail because dirt blocks that little tiny hole oil must go through. Change oil
you guys are very helpful
look at the bottom of the valve cover!! carbon!! never changed the oil. looks like it has 150000 miles on it
My Toyota pickup had 170,000 miles on it and the valve cover was shiny. This Mazda was not maintained well - motor oil not changed on time.
Do you have any idea what the km limit is when the timing chain needs to be changed for Toyota Avansis 2.0 petrol?
I want to buy one that has 170,000 km.
Do you think it will take you at least 50,000km?
2012 Civic 397000 I've never changed timing chain runs like new. Change the oil often. It says there's no replacement of the timing chain on this engine. Mazdas are bad for that specially those c-series
The problem is not the chain, the problem is the tensioner.
great video!
Are there such a problem with new chains ever stretching?
It seems like cars using belt instead of chain are the best!
No chains are better. The Mazda SUVs have always had issues with that especially the one with the turbo period it depends on the make of the vehicle
I have 234,000 miles on my Toyota 5.7L engine timing chain and tensioner with no issues whatsoever.
😯
Can someone show how to reset timing in promaster fiat ducato 3.0 l engine
Mazda cx7 .. these was such scary known weakness for this car ..
That damn turbo!
Hi guys, ive got a 3L 2012 cadillac srx CROSSOVER,,,i recently noticed a threading sound coming from drivers side of the engine when i start the engine,,especially in cold weather..The frustrating thing is..it used to go away after 3 to 5 mins,,now it just drags on and on. Being to the mechanic like ,,cant remember how many times...chaged the water pump.engine belts,,,sound;s still pops up...help me out guys..
Should I always replace the sprockets as well?
ok guys..yes guys good job guys
Main cause is tensioner, this type of tensioner is fail engineering and fail early
just change oil every 5,000 miles
I always change my chain with every oil change
You must be rich!
thats insane yo lol
Chains are tin?
Only on some mainly those c-series Mazdas
Never My Hyundai Elantra 140K runs like a champ original chain:)
Same with my 220k corolla. 😁
ive had a hardtime understanding what he says sounds like blabering.
Talk less and get to the point
Very Uneducated... these vehicles do not have lifters... these are Cam Buckets that are shimmed. The noise you hear is more than likely the Intake Cam Phaser. Also keep in mind these vehicles are Direct injected which you failed to mention. The fuel rail and injectors are pressurized up to 2000 psi. Did you check to see the if the injector seals. This motor is a mess and I’m sure you may mean well but educate yourself. And if you notice the oil leak more than likely is from the timing cover seeping closer to the alternator not the crank seal.
Your video is very misleading for anyone searching TH-cam for help on this motor.
Well, like most mechanics :D
Nevertheless the chain was fucked and replaced..
stop saying guys!
