  • According to an article on Business Tech, numerous skilled workers are leaving South Africa, with Europe, Canada and Australia being the top three popular destinations of choice. While there is no official tracking of emigration, several pieces of data show that South Africans are leaving the country in droves. These include the latest data from SARS which shows that over 40 000 taxpayers have ended their tax residency in South Africa, as well as Henley & Partners' latest Wealth Migration Report 2023, which shows that 400 high net-worth individuals worth more than R18 million emigrated in 2022. Generalist Senior Recruiter at REDi Recruitment Simonne Adcock says emigration has been seen in all industries, including IT/Digital, Banking, Engineering, Executive and Legal. She joins us virtually to discuss this further.

Yep, the 1st sign that a country is failing is when the young graduates and other highly qualified people leave their country to pursue a career in a healthier environment.
Other indicators are personal wealth flowing out of the country, disinvestment together with foreign investment slowing down.
Our government lacks much intellect so only lives for the day so they aren't really concerned with the knock on consequences of highly qualified people emegrating.
Note ... This group when leaving the country directly reduces the revenue that state coffers so desperately needs to provide social welfare for those with no skills, unemployed and elderly .
Possibly, many if they did not leave would start businesses providing much employment for the people.
Sadly, this fact is inconsequential to the state as they are disadvantaged by their lack of vision and intellect.

The worst is i scored the highest in my SACAP exams at 97 percent. And the home affairs rejected my critical skills visa renewal based on new critical skills list that is coz of published NQF level being the reason. I appealed asking them to give me time so that i can study and get to that nqf level 9 it takes approx a year or two but even that was rejected. Despite of highly skilled professional that are already leaving at their own will they are also loosing people like me that are being forced to leave. 😢

The attitude in South Africa is "our people" must get free education, water, electricity, transport, housing, education, school lunches, cash grants and services... but they don't need to contribute anything.
On the other hand the hard working taxpayer is treated as an after-thought that must pay or else. You can see it in all the statements from the ANC. They couldn't be bothered less that they are about the taxpayer! ANC focuses on pleasing the majority that votes it into power.
Well, the result is taxpayers get sick of being taken for granted. they pack up. They leave! You can try and paint rosy pictures of "some people return" all you want but the reality (even confirmed by Biddulphs!) the net is an outflow. The people you will have left in SA are the leeches who believe they are owed free stuff but there will be no one to pay the tax that funds it all.

Push/pull factors? I left SA in 2004 after every job opening I enquired about for an engineer (which I am, mechanical, post grad, since 2000), told me I could only apply for the job if I'm black, coloured, indian or asian. I left almost a year to the date I was back in SA in 2003. Not much of a pull factor, 100% push factor, wouldn't you say? Just to add, I don't know one white South African that returned to SA, out of more than a million that's no longer there. One whole generation have embarked on The Great Trek 2.0, to get away from tyrrany and operession of BBBEE & EE. In any case, I'll never work for a company that won't promote me, and won't give me a salary increase, simply because I'm white.
What is facinating though is how the media, institutions and governments always try to argue this, and argue that, but they're too lazy to simply ask people why they leave! And their assumptions are ALWAYS wrong.
Oops, had to add that I never emigrated from SA financially, and I never had to. No one is required to financially emigrate from SA as long as there's a DTA between the the adoptive country and SA! Sars seems to conveniently forget that little detail, and they use their scare mongery on unsuspecting, ignorant and gullible people. It's actually quite easy. Leave most of your stuff in SA, live and work abroad until your tax residency is certified by the DTA, and then move everything over. Sars cannot argue with an international treaty with another country!
Oh, and of course, I don't want to live in a country that has its head up Russia and China's "you know what". The biggest cause of brain drain in SA is the ANC, Cosatu and the SA Goverment, driving sensible, educated and experienced South Africans out of the country (of all races).
And lastly, everytime statistics show that the Goverment is crooked and useless, the government simply tell stats SA to no longer collect those statistics! This is nothing new! Talk about burying your head in the sand.

Hi, I’m from the uk. Never been to South Africa. Two of my uncles were mixed race and left SA in the 1960s and made a life for themselves in the uk.
I have met many South Africans over the last ten years who have all moved to the uk. All moves due to the increasing violence. One family I’ve been friends with said when the second house on their street was broken into - with lots of violence - that is when they decided to leave. I asked them and others what they miss about SA. The answer is nothing. They miss absolutely nothing about South Africa.
Life in the uk is not a picnic, but we are nowhere near the levels of violence, rape and murder that SA is at. When 1/3 SA young men admits to being a rapist, you know you have a rotten country.
Maybe electing a terrorist who murdered people and a man accused by several women of rape is not the way to elect a winning team. Maybe electing someone who murdered and someone who raped is going to result in a country with a high rate of murder and rape?
And that is before we get to the financial corruption.
Yep. Everyone I have met who has left South Africa does not look back.

Latest economic and employment data reinforces this. Maybe we just in a recession and things will improve, but this is the current state of the country and it's getting worse. I have friends who left the country because they were retrenched and couldn't find work, and others who are still working here under more pressure because their companies won't hire new people to take over the additional work.
