In this tutorial we are going to paint a bird commonly found in the UK. It's a very pretty and vibrantly colored bird so it should be fun.
During the class you will learn how to ensure the bird is the focal point, how to paint feathers, how to paint a realistic bird eye and how to paint wood
Colours used in this painting are : Titanium White, Sap Green, Raw Umber, Cerluean Blue, Lamp Black, Cadium Yellow, Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna

which is not to say that Vandyke Brown would not work. You can often use multiple colours and get the same result :)

Do you mix gamsol or another medium to the paint to produce "fat over lean"? I found when using your technique, the paint was heavy and just melted together, maybe I was over working it.... as you can see, I'm a novice, but I will keep going! I love watching you paint and you are great encouragement to me! thank you so much!
yes I gradually add more medium into subsequent layers - but you have to be stingy in the beginning otherwise your mix is too liquid too soon. Remember even one drop of medium more is enough to satisfy the fat over lean rule.

The secret to painting the feathers is to not paint thrm at all. Love that! I am always so terrified to start something like this. I'm afraid I'm going to mess it up big time. I bought some caves paper to practice

you can also use regular masking tape
What is the shiny stuff you paint over covering the bird ? How do you do this?
it is called clear cover which is like a roll of transparent sticker. I then place it on the canvas and cut out the shape I want to mask using a craft knife. You can get clear cover here: www.paintbasket.com/go/clearcover

I want to paint animals too in oil painting, and I wonder is it important to learn sketch first and then start drawing? Thanks!
it all depends, if you don't mind tracing your outlines, like I do then you don't need to learn drawing first. If however you want to freehand the outlines, then learning to draw first is best because your final artwork is only as good as the initial drawing.

I use painting medium to thin my paint, but only as little as required. The idea is to thin it to a consistency that makes the paint flow nicely off the brush. When using a large brush the paint can be thicker, but as you go over to softer, longer haired brushes the paint needs to be thinner to flow off onto the canvas.
