Its so cool you just go right into painting something without a pencil sketch. You are inspiring. Your ability to add stuff in the painting like you did with the cat.

He didn't go right into painting, he first drew the main shapes with the brush (1.23). It is a standard way to start a painting.

    • @zacattack3292

@@todayipaint4667 they're talking about how he didn't go in with a pencil sketch first and then paint into that, he just started sketching it out right off the bat with paint, which I find impressive too. A lot of people, not all, pencil sketch it out and then sort of paint in the lines. I find myself doing this as well because I feel like I don't want to mess up by starting out with oils first.

Years ago I had a couple of awesome traditional teachers. But I did not make notes and left painting to have a family.
With the pandemic and my kids grown I found myself wanting to paint again, but feeling like I don't know anything.
I have been searching the Internet for artists with traditional knowledge.
I was lucky to find yourself and also a great Russian landscape painter, but he only demos and doesn't speak.
You are reminding me of many things which are full of cobwebs and long forgotten.
So great, great appreciation from Canada. And admiration for a great artist.

Watching you paint feels like watching magic. Have you always had such a natural affinity? Or did it take you many many years to become so good?

    • @ronschlorff7089
      @ronschlorff7089 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Like any profession, it just takes lots of study and years of hard work to become as proficient as Andrew is today. I know that is difficult for many young people to understand but there are no gifts, natural talents, or "affinities" involved. It's like a computer programmer, he was not born to write code, but he took courses, worked, and learned how, and eventually became so good at it that it was "like oxygen to him"; he had to have it to keep living. That's all. No magic folks, just good old hard work; please don't ever be afraid of it!!

  • @ebihay916

Hi Andrew i have been watching your videos for years, you are truly amazing, incredible.
This is the first time i have ever commented, it's because of the subject matter. Your pets are beautiful. My pets have been the love of my life and i lost one of my pets recently. Her name was Ebi, a ragdoll cat. She was my best friend, we were always together. She was 17 years and 5 months. My grief has been intense and to help me get through it i have been doing lots of little sketches of her, now i am going to do an oil painting. So i came here to see how you lovingly honoured your pets in oil. I love all animals, everywhere and in all places, i constantly draw and paint them because they suffer so much at the hands of humans and drawing them helps and soothes my aching heart.
Thankyou for this beautiful portrait Andrew, because you didn't get bogged down with trying to paint lots of individual hairs, that's always been a problem for me, so now i feel like i can do justice to the painting of the love of my life.
I now have another pet, another cat, a rescue cat and she's delightful, they just want to be with us and interact with us, i think it's lovely that your cat wants to be with you and have her say in your art.😂.
    Thankyou Andrew.

Haha! Little "joke" but the clip actually shows me reviewing my latest DVD before it went to production. There is a lot of review time involved, and the cat just wanted to jump at the brush on the screen. Truthfully, I watch stuff as a "brain break" from painting.

You mean other shows like TED talks or documentaries or still things related to painting? I tend to listen to music and have discovery channel on, works a charm as 'brain break'.

Usually I do paint still-life, but thought I would try changing things up by painting a critter. Not having a clue how to get started, I found your video invaluable. Though i have no idea how my effort will come out, your great video has given me things to be aware of that I don't think I would have otherwise thought of. Moreover, not only are you an excellent artist, you're a great teacher. Thank you for posting this.

It’s amazing that I just saw you paint with Cross Hatching Technique. It utilizes the effect of the paint as usual. I didn’t know people actually paint like this.

thank you so much for this tutorial!! I love the combo of looseness and detail of your technique, blended with just enough bravery of color in the shadows to be bold yet realistic... and not trite. What this tells me is that you are concerned about the soul of the subject, and not just showing off rendering technique.
I have just started painting again, and cracked up when I noticed your "trimmed" old fan brush for fur. I actually had thought of doing that recently, and am now going to do that. I am wrestling with a large painting of a mountain lion, in some beautiful dramatic back- light. This video has given me some new ideas. Thanks!!
