  • This graphite vs steel shaft comparison features 2nd Swing master fitter Taylor Ledwein testing the UST Recoil graphite iron shaft vs the KBS Tour R steel shaft. In many 2nd Swing fitters, the discussion of graphite vs steel shaft comes up and it's an important one to go through in a fitting.
In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald and Taylor Ledwein conduct a Trackman Test to showcase differences between a graphite vs steel shaft in regular flex. Is there a major difference? Which one should you play?

I just got some irons with the UST Recoil 95 graphite shafts hoping it would help my tennis elbow. Previously I used the Nippon NS Pro 950GH Neo shafts which were almost identical weight. The graphite shafts feel so soft off the face... maybe too soft. But I still get enough feedback on my mishits. Overall, much less vibrations which is helping my elbow, so I'm super happy with the change.

First of all, thank you for this vid. Very interesting and relevant for a lot of folks. Second, congrats on a beautiful, repeatable swing. I’m envious. Gorgeous swing plane. Finally, I really think you are on to something and should take it further. Custom fit a slower swinger (got a retiree hanging around the store?) into a steel and a graphite shaft and compare results. From what I’m seeing, graphite yields more distance, more spin, and steeper landing angle with only a minor dispersion degradation. I’d take that any day.

For Taylor, the graphite had less spin and had a tighter dispersion.

Great to see a test with Taylor because those of us who have moderate swing speeds can relate to hers. Wish you would let us know which iron, a 7 or a 6, and which ball. Spin rates and ball speed can vary with the ball. For Taylor, the Recoil graphite did better than the KBS Tour in every category. Probably would for me also.

    • @scotthucks7966

Not every category. Spin rate was better with steel which she says she likes better to hold greens.

@@scotthucks7966 Interesting. I will be 82 in June and am in the process of changing from my current 120 gram Rifle Lite stiff flex steel shafts to
lighter steel shafts, almost certainly Nippon NS Pro Zelos 8 stiff flex steel shafts that weigh 87.5 grams. Keeping the same forged blade heads as I love the feel. I can get 10 yards more carry with my 7 iron as a result of increased swing speed and ball speed with the lighter shafts. Nippon has world class steel technology. Preferred them to KBS Tour Lite. The Zelos shafts are designed to feel close to graphite but are less expensive.

With overall spin speed over 5000RPM, a difference of about 100RPM isn't likely to be noticeable. And will be offset by higher launch.

I am 63 years old, 7 handicap, driver swing speed on average 87-90. I have been just recently fitted and coincidentally compared the two shafts in the video. For my quick tempo the 110 steel seemed best even over 95 steel. That’s just me. What I will add is the 3, 4 and some times a 5 iron is moving to hybrids which I hate compare to irons. New possible trend . Mixed set steel through 7 iron and 6, 5 in graphite. Thoughts? Why not?

I am same age, driver swing speed around 95 to 102. 7-iron around 85 mph. I have played 64g Recoils ESX F3:s for 3 years now. The flex is medium but more like a "soft" stiff flex. Great shaft for me, had to put extra lead tape to the heads because of the light shafts and playing medium size grips.

You should do the test again but with a third option - a shaft which combines both such as the Steelfiber or similar, but crucially have all 3 shafts at the weight
In terms of the raw numbers once you take into account standard deviations and statistical significance any small differences in performance are almost certainly down to the weight differences in the shafts rather than one being steel and one graphite
What the test shows is that there are not really any performance differences now between graphite and steel shafts - which ever one you prefer the feel of, assuming proper fitting, will do you well
As for Taylor, what a lovely rhythm to her swing

Are UST Mamiya still calling the Recoil 95 a Prototype? I just checked their web site, and they have Recoil 95, 110 and 125 in F3 and F4, but do not mention Prototype anywhere. I saw reviews of the Recoil 95 Prototype from 2013, 2018 and 2019 but not newer. It may be only through a custom order from one of their TSPX (stands for Tour Spec) Lab fitters.

I disagree with the analysis of the dispersion. Take out the two worst shots of each shaft and see what remains. Removing the two left-most points of the graphite shaft leaves a circle about 12 yards wide, centered about 3 yards left of the centerline. Doing the same with the steel leaves a circle about 20 yards wide, centered 8 yards left.

Thanks for watching and for the comment - and yes, it's difficult to get a good data set that represents the performance most accurately. Our rule of thumb is usually to utilize the better shots and remove the poorer ones that are not indicative of the club or shaft's performance

  • @AmmoDude

I get exactly the opposite results when going from steel to graphite. I have recoil graphite in one set of irons and TT dynamic gold in another set, both regular flex. I can not feel the lighter weight graphite shafts working in the swing, it provides no feedback and I tend to hit all my clubs off the toe (even though the graphite club is about an inch longer) and all my misses are pulls to the left. When I switch to my steel set, I can feel the shaft working through the swing, direction is usually spot on and I hit the center of the face nearly every time. I was "fitted" to the recoils at an indoor facility where I hit the five iron 190 yards (I'm 60+ years old, 9 handicap). The most I can get out of the five iron on the course is 170; 160 being my go to distance. I also had a bad fitting experience years ago when I bought my steel shafted irons. On the indoor set up, I hit the DG stiff flex shaft 10 yards farther than the regular flex so I bought the stiff set. On the course, I had horrible results, losing about 10-15 yards per iron. I switched out to the regular flex DG and got my normal distances back. So for me, these indoor fitting facilities are b.s. You want to get fitted? Do it outdoors on the range and on grass, never on a mat.

Seems like a missed opportunity and kinda pointless comparison. You’re comparing a KBS steel to a UST composite? You’re aware KBS manufacture composite iron shafts? They offer them up to 115g, if memory serves and in several different EI curves depending what your target launch window is.
Even if for some reason you chose to not use the KBS composite iron, there are products from MCA, Fujikura and Accra that offer more weight and EI curve options than UST.
When I switched to composite iron just last year in my Miura’s, it was primarily to allow me to play more than one round weekly, my left elbow and wrists would stiffen and swell after 18 holes w/Modus Tour 120 X. I settled for MCA MMT 105X. The difference in vibration at impact was enough I could play several rounds last Summer on consecutive days. Because how we spec’d shafts my launch window was unchanged. We also added a few grams counterweight in butt of shaft to maintain same swingweight of D3.5. Without that we would have been at over D4, almost 4.5.
When your tester is stating more head feel, that is due to lighter shaft increasing the swingweight, has nothing to do with composite material and/or flex profile. Some folks prefer heavier swingweight, especially with many current ‘off the shelf’ clubs in very low D1-2 range due to lower mass heads. For others, an increase in swingweight can feel like swinging an anvil and will upset their timing.
