Razer Junglecat Android Controller Review- It Could Have Been The Best!

  • The all-new Razer Junglecat android Bluetooth controller is here and in this video, we take a look at this interesting Gamepad. This was Defiantly inspired by the Nintendo Switch Joycons and it uses low energy Bluetooth 5.0 and 100-hour battery life but it's only truly compatible with 3-4 Android phones because it uses specialized cases to connect the controllers to the phone.
It will pair up with any android decide but in order to use the razor Jungle cat in its true form you will need to own the Razer Phone 2 Galaxy S10+ or the Galaxy Note 9 and in Asia, they swapped out the Note 9 case for a p30 Huawei case.
This truly could have been the best android controller if only they used some type of telescopic / sling loaded system to hole and android phone.

      Firstly, thanks for the video.
Can you check if these fit on the Nintendo Switch, and if they pair?
Secondly, I have to disagree with your other assessments.
I admire that they chose X-Input mode and Bluetooth 5.0 so its not proprietary, and should have better wireless experience (latency and battery drain) and that's something you don't find on the cheap controllers. Personally I like a D-pad with the separation just like on the PlayStation controllers and there are millions of others too. And I'm really happy they chose to put the JoySticks on the top of the pad instead of the middle, it's better ergonomics like that. Sure the buttons, sticks, and everything here is a bit small... but that's on-purpose to give you a good gaming experience while having a small profile for portability.
And the design of having a Telescopic Arm is not great, it means you're always carrying around a large contraption. You cannot put it inside your pocket. Instead you need to carry a purse or a backpack. With these, I think you can put both "joycons" together into one pocket. The other pocket can hold the phone with the case on. So you can enjoy gaming when out on the go. Brilliant.

hey , so i live in belgium and contacted razer support and they confirmed i would nót get the note 9 case but the p30's case instead. i have the note 9 so if i would order it, it won't fit i've been waiting for over a year, first from gamevice wich just toootally skipped the note 9 and then the junglecat released and it would the note 9 i got super hyped... unfortunately not down here in Belgium. and there are no plans(according razer customer support) to ship the note 9 case outside the USA. this is a real bummer

You may be right but how long have they successfully n priced themselves as a premium gaming peripheral device maker? I'm with you in that I want both quality and good price and will not but a razor myself. But I recognize the possibility most people aren't as savvy as you are when it comes to buying decisions.
That said, I impulse buy when ETA demos and reviews things. Not everything is as cool to me as ETA makes it look but that's a matter of personal taste or preference not a ding on ETA at all. But I definitely respect his honest reviews.

3d printing your own case seems like a really good option if you want to use this outside of the 3 devices this was designed for. It allows you to control the tolerances of nothing else and the material.

  • @100toeface
    @100toeface 4 ปีที่แล้ว

About the case, you CAN fit other phones inside the case. Many phones are similar sizes, for example my blackberry key2 was able to fit inside the p30 pro case they included, I used some double sided tape just to make sure it didn't slide at all, and it works great, I can flip my phone upside and shake it and it won't come out of the case. Also, I have a unihertz titan which has an extremely weird shape, I am going to use a hacksaw to cut the plastic off the top edge of the plastic case and then use double sided tape again to secure it. This will work because the weight of the device is borne by the bottom edge when holding it in landscape mode. So with some creativity, you can make the plastic cases fit with any phone. Another idea is to simply use a hacksaw to cut off the end rails and glue them to a hardshell phone case made for your phone, that should work also.
This is WAY more portable than any other android gaming solution, if you don't care about portability and having it in your pants pocket then might as well just use an xbox controller like you say or a tablet with a telescoping holder. Then again if portability isn't a concern, why dont you just play games on your pc....? Thats what I don't get about android gaming, it seems everyone completely ignores PORTABILITY, even the switch isn't really pocket friendly, the last actually portable gaming options were the xperia play, psp go and gameboy micro, 8bitdo zero 2 (tip-will work with ios using mac os joystick mode)nothing else will fit in your pocket. This junglecat is a MASSIVE advancement that I've been waiting years for, an actual portable pocket friendly gaming solution! And as you say, the controllers are EXCELLENT quality, on par with joycons, which is also unusual for android controllers. I give it a 10. The telescopic design is bad, because it isn't pocket friendly, so its fantastic that they DIDNT go with the telescopic design.

likely given that the sticks are just ones off the market place in china, which also can suffer from drift.

Good thing i came to visit your Junglecat for retro device review, there is a problem on Xbox Streaming but that's obvious cause unless I'm wrong that it does require to use Xbox One controller 3rd gen./Xbox Elite Gen.2, also the biggest problem to play with Razer-cons are that is not compatible with Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG mobile, and Mario Kart Tour, I can't guarantee if does connect with PS4 Remote play compatible. Now since there a bluetooth compatible Joy-Cons, can it support any PC built-in bluetooth, Apple (Mac,Apple TV, iPad, iPhones, iPod Touch), modded wireless connection adapters, Android devices (Nvida Shield, Sony, LG, HTC, older Android phones and tablets)?

Great video. Was interested in this until I saw the price. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is of the sticks click on to function as L3 and R3

I'm just kinda disappointed they aren't also supporting the Razer phone (the first one) with a case

Looks good but said that it only supports 3 devices sad. Sometimes I wonder what they where thinking.

Weird choice not to make it spring loaded, but then again, it's a premium priced gamepad that will probably sell for those who have the money to pay for these overly expensive phones anyways...
Since it's a dumb connection, you could just make a spring loaded case instead, to fit all sorts of phones. Perhaps it's easier nowadays to just 3D print a case.
Another missed opportunity seems to be that center piece... it's just a piece of plastic isn't it? Kinda weird... they could've made it a charger that also works as a stand. You have to charge both sides of the gamepad with USB Type-C cables instead? Since it doesn't seem to come with cables or chargers, you either have to use the phone's charger or spend more on cable and extra chargers to do it separately.
Main advantage seems to be that it uses Bluetooth 5, which most counterparts don't, but I'm not sure if there is a real difference there... I think most of the latency that happens in bluetooth controllers comes not from the speed of the protocol, but from having to pass through the communication stack (drivers etc)... so this would require a slow motion frame by frame test to see if there is a real advantage. Perhaps there's some improvement on this area for Bluetooth 5, but I'm not sure, specially given all the misleading advertisement the group did around this new version... all sorts of promises falling flat on it's face.
Battery life sound really good though.
Other than that, I think the two cheap chinese gamepads I have here have analog sticks that feel pretty much like the Switch too, and one of them has a regular D-pad. The other has this separated buttons style, but it's flat instead of having the weird center dimple.

I see several controllers that look like the Sataki, but have a different brand name. Any thoughts if they are the "same"?

Will it work with an actual switch? The price isn't thrilling, and the slotting probably isnt the same, but if it could work as an option for people who don't like the offset controls it might be a little enticing. Also the potential for a 3D printed case would certainly help sell a few of these.

Seems like a weird idea in general. What if I already have a case I like for my Note 9, I have to switch it out every time I want to use the Junglecat? It sounds annoying.
Honestly, I just want someone to make a controller like the Flydigi or the Saitake but it stretches wider to fit more phones. Phones keep getting bigger and bigger and these telescopic controllers won't be able to fit them for much longer.
