  • My Hoya a.k.a Wax Plants are doing OK. But I haven't been happy with their slow growth. In this video, I will take them out of the original container to check out what's inside. Also I am hoping repotting will help them grow a little faster during the warm summer season.

    I have a Hindu Rope plant and IT DOES BLOOM annually in the spring! Yes, it is a slow grower. My plant is approx. 20 years old. I have it in a hanging pot and it has grown to about 8ft long. I started with a very small plant and it now fills a 12 in pot. I have propagated several times over the past years and it is absolutely beautiful. No one believes it's real. It gets plenty of light from a west window.

      Mine is 45 years old and extremely pot bound. I have only repotted it twice in 45 years. It faces a north side window and blooms EVERY YEAR in the Spring and Summer. Last year I counted close to 20 pink blooms.

    My Hoya grew like crazy in a bay window the length of the vines were up to20 ft long then one summer it bloomed like crazy huge bunches of succulent type flowers. Very fragrant by a musty smell. When it took off it was in a clay pot no drainage. I never New it would bloom. They love high light little water. Old or dead foliage need to be removed. It was root bound. But happy after the blooms stopped. I decided to repo it. Wrong move. The whole plant died. These are slow growers but this one was happy until I repotted it.the soil I used just miracle grow.for Indoor plants. I should have left it be, after repotting the whole plan died. I was so upset. I bought more they died. They lot a full sun widow with clay pot an cry little attention It was so beautiful, I should have left it be I have pics in its full Glory. I souls have left it be when I find the pics I will share!

      sorry to hear that, they really don’t like too much fertilizer or wet conditions, regular potting soil often has fertilizer pellets. I’d use an orchid mix. or just moss and bark.

    The hindo rope hoya is a slow grower and the variegated one is even slower.

    Great video. Thanks for walking through the issues with the plant and not just doing it. Good to be able to transfer your thoughts and experience onto my own compacta experience.

    Hi. You know, when we first buy these, they're cutttings that were started in water then put in soil so they probably need time to adjust. I have one like this and it's a slow grower. Mine's in a hanging pot - I bought it as a hanging plant and just put it in the size of hanger I wanted. I put it outside for sun and burnt the crap out of it - won't do that again - no direct sunlight (that's what the dried part of your leaves was) Might need a sheer curtain. I use fertilizer (dropper style Shultz) and use rain water for watering and misting (they love this) I have a fan above my plants and water them when they're dry and they can go dry fast. I put small rocks in the bottom of my plants for drainage - if you use paper towels they might mildew - just my opinion - good luck- be careful of the orchid bug - I have several.

      Burr Nelson Thanks so much for the comment! So far, so good after repotting. I'm planning to do a quick update on that. I had an issue with some tiny black bugs that went after everything but orchids, African violet, and hoyas, so crossing my fingers that I won't have any more issues with other bugs... They drove me nuts for good 3 months... Is yours flowering? That'll be my next challenge. I hear flowers smell wonderful & look pretty stunning. Happy growing!

      2nd Chance Garden I have a few orchids and if the little black bugs flew - they were probably fungus nats that show up cause of decomposed potting media - I've seen them too. People buy butterworts (if you google it, you'll see a pic) they catch these. My other hoya (carnosa) bloomed (no smell) but is stopping now - I think they like the spring and not summer temps.

    • @2ndChanceGardenChannel
      @2ndChanceGardenChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Burr Nelson They don't fly, but if I'm too slow on catching, they jump. So infuriating!!!!!! But I came up with a solution & worked. I need to do another follow up video on my bug spray I used. Funny you mentioned butterworts! I love them. They are hard at work right now (by just sitting pretty.) I feel like I can use a few more of these in my space! :) Kudos to you for making your hoya bloom! You must be doing all the right things!

      2nd Chance Garden "Brad's greenhouse" has a hoya compacta that bloomed - probably because it got so much light doing the day. Mine was probably 18 inches long before it bloomed - get that hanging pot!

      @2ndChanceGardenChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Burr Nelson Wooo, yes, I probably have seen that Brad's video. Nice to have a greenhouse for sure... I wonder how long it'll take for mine to go beyond 18 inches... This means I have plenty of time to shop for a lovely hanging basket. LOL

    I have the Tricolor one the regular Carnosa, not the rope, at the biggering I don't see any growth for a long time maybe a year, one day I decide to pot it in a bigger pot and I place it on my NE window and for a month no it was no different, after two month I see new leaves growing , I couldn't believe it
    now I can see little strings which I think is going to be a flower, I am so happy it was worth the wait. Good luck

    I have a Hindu rope plant, about 25 years old. I noticed sticky substances on the table under the plant. Found out it's mealybugs. Right now I have "her" in the garage in a clear bag and I'm planning how to attack this. Those curly leaves will make it difficult to directly contact these bugs with a spray. So my plan is water and mild dish detergent ( 1 TBSP detergent to 1 quart of water) in a kiddie pool in the shade outside. Have a new pot ready with fresh soil. Submerge the entire plant for 60 seconds and swish gently. Remove from water, wrap in something soft, probably a sheet or old blanket and keep in the shade for 3 hours. Then gently spray with clean water to get the soap off. Repot. Bring back in the house and put the whole plant back in the garage in a clean clear bag. In 5 days, spray everything with soapy water, same ratio as above. What do you all think? I'm not sure about removing all of the old soil since the plant is being traumatized enough and some of the posters say not to repot but I've read there are also root-eating mealybugs. This was my Mum's plant so I'd really like to keep her going. I'd love to hear from everyone. Am I on the right track? Should I change anything?

      how did it go?

    • @jackiec.232
      @jackiec.232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mahalie23 hello! I followed my plan as per above. When I took her out of the pot I was shocked at how small the root system was! Almost nothing there, have no idea if that's normal. After the second spray, I left her uncovered and outside until it got cold and then brought her into the garage. So for about the past year, she's been in the garage near the window, not thriving but not dying either, still green. I'm watering her very sparingly, about every 4 months. Not sure what to do and the fact that she's still green must mean she's hanging in there, right?

    My Hindu rope each 5 ‘ long and took 4 of such out of pot and out all in a leather community pot about 3 months back .
    Now I noticed dehydration taking place . Not sure if they did not like media. ? Media was not succulent type. It’s more of coco chips charcoal and coco peat based a media .
    Should I repot with Hoya types media ? Or they are fine in that media but need more water . We are having very dry day . My vandas are socked early morning and spray more two times a day . Humidity only 34% while temperatures is 38 C
    Plz suggest me now !!

    In order for them to bloom they need to be a little older......and extremely pot bound!!!!!

    • @temisacks539

      Her video is dead wrong. Never break up the pot-bound soil and roots. THe plant needs to be pot-bound...for several years.

    • @glorialogan
      @glorialogan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I did not know that they had to be pot bound to bloom! So that's why mine is doing so well! I learn by trial and error with most of my plants. Thank you!

      Gloria correct mine was potbound for 7 year or more and it went wild with gorgeous blooms! It does not need drainage or sand less is more pick a permanent clay pot no drainage hole. Do not spray it. If it’s dusty put it in the shower rinse it off and let it dry out! I learned by experience also. No special media required. More so neglect very little to no water in the winter. Put them in a permanent pot in full sun and leave it!

    From all my study of hoya, this all sounds like a VERY BAD IDEA! It is now 7/15/17 and noting this recording is from 2015 and the fact that there's no follow up, suggests that maybe she didn't want to share the results!
