If you wait to water until a Hoya has flimsy or pruny leaves, eventually the chronic underwatering will cause the leaves will not recover as well. The leaves will slowly get thinner and thinner until they reach the point that a “normal” underwater time period will cause leaves to brown, yellow, and fall off. Plant Hoyas in a very barky substrate mix and water when the mixture is almost dry right up next to the roots. I plant my Hoyas in leca or pon, which compacta love! Hope that helps everyone!
all my hoyas are either in sohagnum, hydroponics, or semi hydroponics!
Agreed. I don't let any of my hoyas prune before watering... Just the leaves getting softer is enough. I can't imagine letting them dehydrate like that all the time!
Thank you!! I had 3 Hoya compacta variegata that have died. 2 were small cuttings and 1 was a very established plant I found during travels. I listened to multiple plant TH-camrs saying wait until they leaf is flexible or even wait until it starts resembling a raisin and then water. And every freaking time they’d die within 6 months!! So I just got my forth plant and I’m like fuck that, I’m watering it more often I’m at 5 months and so far so good. Thanks.
Also that explains why my cuttings of my Kringle 8 won’t freaking drink! They’re all bendy and it’s like no matter how much water I give em they will not plump up! The plant I took the cuttings from are fine but they’ve not gone through the same drought like conditions the cuttings have. (They were in a prop box and every time I checked on em for the 1st month or 2 the moisture was still high. And I stopped checking on them as often until I’d accidentally forget about em for long periods of time)
But seriously I’ve been struggling w this and no plant TH-camrs would mention what you said and I thought I was the only one that was happening to.
Yikes that’s terrible advice - please DO NOT WAIT TO YOUR ENTIRE COMPACTA OR ANY HOYA IS COMPLETELY PRUNED, that will cause MAJOR DAMAGE! Damage that IS NOT REVIEWED ERSIBLE.
My Hoyas flower when I give them “longer” light times - not “more intense strong light” I have over 100 species of hoya, and this is not good advice . I had to speak up or I would be so upset with myself

My regular green compacta rooted in water in like 3 weeks. I just potted them up today, water is my favorite prop method, I like watching the roots develop 🤗
Hoya compactas are amazing!! I can't wait to find the variegated compactas near me!! I have 3 large jade ones and I absolutely love them!!!

Your right…..I had a two leaf cutting of Chelsea and a two leaf of sunrise for at least a year that just wasn’t doing anything, I put them in leca very reluctantly and sure enough they both have 5 leaves and it’s been about 3 months! I love it!

My hoya carnosa compacta variegata is happy and growing - but all of it's now leaves are variegated/light pink. Any tips on getting more green leaves?
They are watered well, in an airy soil w lots of bark and they get 12 hours of grow light per day.
Still hunting for one!! I'm hoping one will show up in one of my local small business plant stores.

Gave mine serious root rot because I didn't realize the separate plants had had their roots wrapped in mesh fabric before they were planted in the pot. As the roots grew they wrapped around the inside of the mesh which retained water more than the soil did and kept them wet. I'm currently trying to reroot it so wish me luck!
yep. They do that w orchids too! I call those mesh things death traps.
Hi, I have a question: do you have problems with gnats? I have a problem with every soil that I'm using.
No offence but thinking that keeping a H. carnosa alive for two years is a long time made me chuckle. 😄 I have a cutting of my great grandad's carnosa that is at least from 1940 (photo proof of that), that sucker has survived wartime, being in dark unlit corners of the house and being forgotten in a black plastic bag for months after a move. When at my parents house it grew in a dark corner, climbed up the wall and along the ceiling (around 6 meters) to get to the lamp above the dining room table, where it happily bloomed.

It's funny how different Hoyas are; my Australis will hate me if I wait to water it till it's wrinkly all over, but it roots within a week if you put it in a box with soil
I just got my 2nd one of these…I slowly killed my 1st, so I’m hoping it goes better this time around. I was really trying not to overwater, but I think it got to the point where I was underwatering…poor thing was just constantly pruny. ☹️
i dont wait till they get wrinkly to water, i go by dry soul and softer to touch
What did the largest one cost? I found a couple green ones that length at a bodaga in NYC for 30 each but they were in really bad shape and had been left out in the rain in November.

How often are u watering?
I don’t really have a schedule, just when it seems dry. I recently refreshed the soil and discovered that it’s roots are really shallow, no breakage. Looks like they were just cutting potted up. The pot it was in was too big for it’s root system. I repotted it with new soil and watered it but these weird mushrooms in it also. I finally took the cuttings out, split them up and have one in Pon and the others are in water until I can figure out how to properly pot them up.
I just got one and a leaf fell off and I almost cried 🤣
