  • Sometimes you can tell when a plant is ready to be repotted. One tip is wrinkled leaves and stunted growth. This can be a sign that your plant is now longer absorbing enough water.

    Repotting Hoya carnosa compacta is no different than repotting most other plants. Use a well-draining soil, possibly an orchid bark or a mix of orchid bark with some all-purpose. Whatever you decide just remember that Hoya carnosa compacta do not like soggy roots.

    My tip would be to always always always remove as much old soil as possible when repotting. Every single time. And if you have seen fungus gnats or any other critters, gently wash the roots after removing the old soil, lay the plant on a rack (I usually use a rolling plant thingy...brainfart can’t think of the name of that gadget lol) to let the roots dry and then repot with 100% clean fresh soil in a pot that has been cleaned with a mild soap🖤🖤🖤🖤

    Can you do a follow up??

    Next time you see Fungus Gnats during repotting, remove as much soil as you can. Then use fresh soil that will not have larvae or eggs remaining in it. You will cross contaminate the new soil.
    Try using Mosquito Bits. I put a capful in a coffee filter and staple or rubber band it closed. Soak over night in warm water in your watering can. When your plants need to be watered, water first with water and then followed by the MB infused water.
    Yes that is how I start to get rid of Mealybugs. Then I also spray the top of my soil with Neem oil/peppermint infused water everytime I water my plants. I also spray my Hoya Carnosa Compacta, so MB do not get into the crinkled leaves.
    Have you tried Miracle Grow Orchid Spray on your Hoyas? Nicole from My Clean Leaves does and now so do I. My Hoyas love, love, love it.
    Be smart and safe,
    Gerry

      @@SuburbanSill More than welcome. I had an infestation years ago and lost many plants since I didn't know how to get rid of them. Don't mind passing on tips that work for me.

    Mixing the old soil with the new soil isn’t good. Especially if you don’t like fungus nats.

    I enjoyed your video.I noticed you didn't water it in. When do you do that? Also do you know of any reason I shouldn't repot my varigated and regular Hindu Hoya ropes together? I have 3 plants I want to put in one hanging pot. Thanks for your help.

    Have you ever tried clove oil with water, use 10 or more drops to make strong, it numbs them to death. I use this for alot of bugs, spider's.

      I noticed that mine was a bit of a slow grower at first too. Maybe try moving it to bright light to spur some growth.

    I have tried two and they always end up with wrinkled leaves. One didn’t root at all from a local seller. I’m paranoid about wet roots and tried to see what was wrong with the last one and the roots were so thin. Are they supposed to be thin or thicker?

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, the roots are thinner than some other plants. If they are hollow or mushy then that's a bit of a problem. Tell me what you mean by thin.

    How is your Hoya doing a year later? When you did this repot did you go up a pot size?

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was doing great until recently it go a case of mealy bugs and with all those folds and crevices I had a hard time getting it under control. Yes, I did go one up.

      @@SuburbanSilltry using one of those plastic hair dye bottle w the long point tip to clean for mealies. It makes it easy to clean all the tight places! You can use the alcohal in it.

      Best thing to do is try again!! That’s how we learn 😄. I have a nearly big problem that I’m fighting, but other than that it’s doing pretty good.

    I have many Hoyas. I would of taken that plant out of the original pot. Not kept any of that soil, put it in compost, and put the whole plant in warm soapy water for ten min. Really clean that plant . Then put it in your new mix. Then I mix a bit of Charlie Carp and lower the whole fresh pot till it stops bubbling. Your plant will spring to life

    • @SuburbanSill

      I love that tip! Thank you for sharing. I am going to try that for sure next time I repot. Do you have any fertilizer suggestions?

    I love HCC but every single care /repot video I see they have mealy bugs... And dear dog, I hate mealy bugs!!! 😖
    I might eventually get one (they are hard to find here in Belgium) but if I do it will have to live in isolation! 😂

    • @SuburbanSill
      @SuburbanSill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The good thing with Hoyas in general...the leaves are hard and waxy so getting the mealy bugs off is pretty clear and easy. Don’t let it scare you away!!

    That soil is larger than mulch 😂🤣 I use bonsai jacks gritty mix and cactus and succulent soil 50/50 and it seems to work really well, what causes tiny black dots on this plant?
