    I really understand the "life happens thing." I keep trying to avoid it, but sometimes you can't stop it from creeping in. I'm so glad that my videos helped to reawaken your interest in Hoyas. They are really a great houseplant, and can turn into a terrific hobby - Just don't let it get out of hand. There are many days when I think that it has done just that to me. I bet your pubicalyx looks beautiful!

    While some people have luck rooting in water, I never have. I would root them in either damp perlite or hydroton and keep them in a bright warm place (no sun!) in a plastic bag that I would gradually open up after a couple of weeks. You also can just root them in a pot filled with their regular potting mix that is just slightly damp using the same plastic bag trick. Hoya pubicalyx is a tough customer, and will root most any way that you want to do it!

    Great video! I'm new to hoyas and houseplants in general and I'm still very insecure, esp. about watering! I tend to underwater, but still my hoya carnosa looks like it has edema on one branch. But after watching this, I think it's the pot! Ceramic pot, no drainage... I just realized this video is 7 yrs old...lol. Hope your hoyas are still happily thriving!

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, time sure does fly by. Hard to believe that it has been 7 years already. The Hoyas are still thriving, and you are right about your ceramic pot with no drainage. It is nearly impossible to water correctly when there is not drainage hole!

    I'm glad you enjoyed the video. If you take cuttings from the larger Hoyas, no harm should come to the flower spurs (peduncles).

    Your not becoming a pest! Those Hoyas will stop growing with low humidity, but they should not have died. The plants you mentioned are all relatively hardy. I will say that small starter Hoyas are all very susceptible to watering mistakes, making them easy to kill with just one mistake. I have killed more than I ever want to admit. I am looking at a hoya kerrii right now next to my desk at work it has hardly grown in the last year because it is so dry in here, but it is very much alive.

    Thanks for the video. I have a 20+ year-old Hoya that easily hasn't been re-potted since the early 2000s. I snagged it from my mom winter, but I'm terrified to re-pot since it is so big and I don't want to break any vines.

      Hi Rob, it is really a challenge when a Hoya is that old and large. It can be done, but it is best attempted with two people, and nerves of steel.

      @@DougChamberlainVTHoyas how many cats did you have? I have five cats so I know what you mean, but I love each one differently as each one as different personalities just like people do. At the moment my daughter has moved in with us and she has a cat too so there are six in this house at the moment. Her cat is a handful always getting into trouble, digging in plants, trying to get in closets etc etc etc. My other cats just watch him.

      @@michelleschafer9692 We had six cats for a very long time, so now four doesn't seem that bad. I agree every single cat seems to have a different personality. I'm fortunate that none of our cats has much of an interest in the plants any more. I will never have another kitten though as they are holy terrors when young and tear into everything.

    • @michelleschafer9692
      @michelleschafer9692 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DougChamberlainVTHoyas hahaha yes kittens are holy terrors, best to adopt adults. Mine don't bother plants at all either except spider plant, draceana marginata, majesty palm, and ponytail palm. Anything with grass like leaves my one cat especially likes to chew on them, so I have to put them up high out of reach. Which is weird because I have my ponytail palm in a macrame hanger. Its ok though as its super small and still 8 bulblets in there. These are all non toxic to them but I still don't want them chewing on leaves. All the toxic ones are within reach or on the floor and they all ignore these plants. Cats aren't stupid they sense and know which is safe and which is not.

    I received a large Hoya plant from my mother. I think it has been in the same pot for more the 15 years. Is there a way to divide it or should it just be put in a larger pot. Currently in a potty pot about 12 inches. Leaves are very thick and seem healthy with long trailing. leaves are spotted. Gets white flower with yellow centers. It was not supported with a trills. I would like to do that as well. Soil always feels dry. Thank you

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! 15 years in the same pot is a long time. Re-potting this plant will not be easy and is probably best attempted by two people. I have never divided a Hoya and can't really comment on how to do it, or if it would work. If you want to repot, wait until it is warm enough to work outside. Get it out of the old pot, which might be easier if you smashed it off with a hammer. Hose off as much old soil as possible, and put it into a pot that is a couple of inches bigger than the old one. You can then add a trellis and carefully untangle the vines and clip them to the support. Good luck with it Kim, and if you decide to give it a try, let me know how it works out for you.

      Doug Chamberlain Thank you, I will wait till it is warmer out. I did not know it was a Hoya plant till about 5-6 years ago. Would you know what type, it has silver spots, with white flowers, yellow/ orange centers

      I believe that is just how they like it.i find just dropping a couple of pots of nice rich potting mix on top of the plant .a couple of times a year, and shaking and watering it down is all they need.they dont really like to have their roots disturbed.they only flower on old wood.mine is a mass of flowers every year,lots of new growth.

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hands down the answer would be Hoya calycina. If you can find it, the clone called Hoya calycina 'Stargazer" would be preferable as it is capable of flowering 2-3 times a year as opposed to only once for the regular calycina.

      +Falasten Ahmed That's pretty funny! Well then, you can buy Hoyas from all kinds of places. There are a few common ones such as various H. carnosas, compacta (Hindu Rope), lacunosa, wayetii, nummularioides, brevialata, and polyneura that are frequently available in big box stores such as Home Depot, Lowes and even Walmart. The more rare Hoyas can be found on Ebay and specialty online Hoya sellers such as SRQ Hoyas.

      Yellow leaves on a Hoya can mean many things. The plant could be too wet, causing root disease, It could be root bound like the plant in my video and need to be repotted. To much light can also cause some leaves to yellow. You need to get the plant out of the pot and examine the roots, and you can quickly ascertain what the problem is. Sometimes conditions are not just perfect and the plant will lose a few leaves, and is nothing to be concerned about.

    Hi what the the best time to re-potting hoya summer , winter , spring or autumn ? also if the roots come out in the air is this dangerous to the plant

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it is not dangerous to the plant for the roots to be exposed briefly to the air. Really the worst time to re-pot would have to be in the winter time mostly because of the colder conditions. Generally the best time to re-pot, or I guess a better term would be to up-pot to a larger pot, would be when the plant is actively growing in the spring and summer.

    How frequently you should water Hoya Kerii and what quantity as my plant is very small and not growing at all since I bought it 2 months back

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hoya kerrii is capable of huge growth spurts when it is very humid and warm. If the conditions are not really to its liking, it will sit there forever and act as if it is made of plastic. I water H. kerrii when the top 1/2 inch of soil is dry to the touch. Hope this helps.

      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the Hoya, but none of them want to be severely root bound. You need to use your judgement; if the plant dries out in a few days, or if the soil feels really hard it is probably time to re-pot.
