Believing etrailer Will Cost You Double! Fulltime RV Living! RV Life!

  • In this video, everything seems to be breaking, and it has us seriously questioning RV life! Starting with a broken LCI slam latch on our baggage doors, which leads to us taking everything out of the storage area to get to the latch in order to open the door from the inside. Then, our couch pull handle breaks for the third time and we discover our RV's taillight lenses have all cracked for the second time. Last, we have a problem with the MaxxAir fan in our main bathroom. After a lot of troubleshooting with the MaxxAir fan, we decide to order a new control board and lid lift motor to help us fix our problem.
    Then, we begin researching how to fix the broken slam latch. In contacting Grand Design and giving them our VIN number, they quickly tell us the part numbers and what the cost will be to order replacements. Surprisingly, they tell us not to order from them since they are so costly when ordered directly from Grand Design. Instead, they said we should contact a dealer for a cheaper price. You’ll want to watch to the end to see what happened when we got etrailer.com involved and how we caught them in a lie! It's a lie that would have cost us double the price if we would have gone along with what they told us!

    Etrailer is one of the best places to go for parts everybody has their opinion and I think Etrailer is a great company

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They may be great, but they are certainly misleading customers with the information they provided us (and countless others on their website) regarding the locks. We also still purchased from them because they have the lowest price, they just don't always know what they are talking about!

  • @skoffco
    @skoffco ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I’m not sure they lied to you, I think it’s just a matter of not understanding some of their products. I have been very happy with E trailer over the years and for the most part, they really do know their sh##😎

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They have several Q&A on the website of people asking the same question and them saying no it is not possible! I asked them directly if I have a Bauer master key can I change the cylinders? The response on two different talks with two different support people was the ones we sell it is not possible even with a master key to change the cylinder out!

    • @skoffco
      @skoffco ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PavingNewPaths they may not want to be responsible for letting that information out thinking it’s sensitive and don’t want to be responsible for people arbitrarily using a master key to break into RV storage compartments. Just my thoughts.

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The dealer that let me use the master key in the video didn't even know you could do that! But it takes far less than a key to get in these doors! They are only for the honest people, if someone wants in they are getting in no matter what is locking the door!

    As a single woman deciding whether to RV alone for at least a year, I am researching everything. I would handle the fan issue in the following way: 1) Open the fan vent manually. 2) When I get sick of number 1, order a new fan! 😂

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I bought it from them because i wanted to save money and to prove the point that just because the experts say it can't be done doesn't mean it can't! It seems it was easier to say no than to think about how things work and question if that answer is actually correct! The Q&A section of that product is filled with them telling so many customers that answer! This either cased them to spend double or triple with the dealer or to have the inconvenience of not having the same key!

Well after watching your video about your bathroom fan I saw you controlled it with that switch. I was thinking we should have one. Needless to say we did but it was actually operated by a remote which I removed from the bathroom assuming it was for something else in the RV. I showed my hunny and we both laughed cause we had no idea why a remote would be in the bathroom. BTW we are buying from family so yeah wasn't told about it. 😂😂😂 Thank goodness for your video.

IRL the fuel tank in the GMC pickup they used in their install video had its fuel tank removed! Making the job all but impossible for the shade tree mechanic. I’m a real mechanic so I had the tools and expertise to get the job done. I wrote a scathing review about how the install video was deceptive and the job was many times more difficult than the video showed. Needless to say my review was not published and I never heard word one from them on my inquiry about the deceptive video.

In this case it is not so much about Etrailer being a problem as a company but the tech support and the wrong info they are giving out to me and so many other before me! I decided to risk the money and buy their parts anyway and change the locks myself! How many others listened to them and spent double going through the dealer or even worse didn't fix it!

    WOW, that was crazy about those latches!
    We were headed to Cullman Alabama. When we stopped for the night in Meridian Mississippi we plugged into the pedestal and had no power in the RV! So it was hotel time. When we got to Cullman the next day we had a service guy come out and he twisted some wires around so our pedestal power worked but generator would not. He had to order the switch and a week later he came back and switched it out. All works right again. Except after we went thru Shreveport out table came completely out of the wall! I understand how when something goes wrong it comes in multiples!

    Regarding the fan motor problem..... If the bearings in the fan motor start going bad, it can put to much load on the board, causing a board failure. If the board was designed well, there would be a fuse on it that would blow, instead of ruining the board. I repair copiers and I see this often.

    • @PavingNewPaths

      Good point, I didn't think about that! This is why I'm glad I took the extra time to use spare parts to determine what the problem was. I initially just thought it was the board that was bad, but it turned out to be the board and motor.

    I'm starting to lose faith in eTrailer. I have a dealer account with them. I buy stuff to resell. Their shipping department doesn't understand the concept of using packing material when packing up orders. Every time I place an order for the same exterior light fixtures, they NEVER use packing material, so the lights bounce around in the box and bang around against each other as the box travels to Washington State.
    I've posted multiple photos of multiple orders in the review section for the item I order, showing this problem. I've emailed them. I've had to get replacements shipped to me to replace damaged items. I've had their customer service people go out of their way to call me, yet they still never using packing material. Perhaps you could, but with three kids and a dog, we wanted them to have their own room and dedicated space inside the RV. That way, it feels more like "home" for them instead of just vacation!

      @@PavingNewPaths That's also done in the coaches I mentioned. Plus, the quality of the builds are exceptional and built to last under full time use.
      The stick and staple industry focuses on part time use. If you're full time in one, that puts the equivalence of four to five years every year you live in it.
      Not so with a bus build.

    E-trailer would be correct. "YOU” can not change out the lock cylinder. Only a dealer or manufacturer with the master key can do that. Key word here is “You”.
    That said, it’s a good move to have a dealer involved anyway for future warranty purposes.

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They actually said the latches they sell it is not possible to change the key because they are not made to be changed! I asked a direct question if I have a bauer master key can I just swap my existing key cylinders! The answer was no it is not possible, they also have Q&A section on the product of them telling several people over the years that you can't do it as well, instead they want you to purchase a new set of keyed alike locks from them in order to have a matching key! We have never been to a dealer with our RV and never will, warranty is a joke and will not help you, I was only at the dealer to borrow the master key, even the dealer told me it's not possible to change them out, guess what they are now going to be ordering their LCI latches from etrailer and not letting the manufactures over charge them!

      @@PavingNewPaths while we probably disagree in the dealer aspect, the additional supplied details in what exactly was asked and what exactly was replied changes the narrative quite a bit.
      It would seem based on the additional detail, whoever you spoke with at etrailer was not well educated on how the latch and lock sets work, and therefore have out bad info. We agree there.
      Where we disagree is involving a dealer. It’s fine if you feel like dealers are not for you. However for others who want to ensure no issues when making warranty claims, involving. Dealer somewhere in the process can be a valuable thing. I know this from experience. As soon as warranty is up, I do it all myself. Until then, it’s the dealer and manufacturers problem to fix under warranty.
      It sounds like you’ve have some negative experience with dealers and warranty. And I’m sure others have too. I personally have not, and have a very good relationship with the dealer whom we bought our trailer from.

      @@VegasGuy1975 We bought our trailer used and have made every repair out of pocket and have come out cheaper and never had to give our RV up to the dealer to make repairs! We live fulltime and can't be at the mercy of the dealerships or warranty! We also didn't buy new and didn't pay that new price therefore we don't feel the need to make warranty claims to justify the cost of what we paid! @@PavingNewPaths buying a well cared for used trailer is a great way to go. This does eliminate the need for dealer interaction via warranty.
      We bought new, but well before the pandemic when it seems a LOT of build quality issues cropped up due to demand outstripping supply.
      There have been a couple of warranty issues we’ve had crop up and our dealer jumped right on them. This may not be the case for everyone, but it was for us.
      Next April our warranty is up and we’ll be doing any repairs outside warranty on our own with no dealer involved. Mainly because, like you said, cost.
      All that said, you guys got a heck of a nice trailer for getting it used. It looks well cared for and well maintained. Should be fun to see where it takes you over the next several years.

      Ours was a pre pandemic build, the owners bought it to travel fulltime and never got to really use it! The pandemic changed thier plans and they sold it to us about 6 months old! Being the second owner even on a brand new rig still has fine print on warranty claims! We had our roof fail and were denied because warranty only applies to first owner even on a rig that is only 9 months old! It was at that point we never involved them again! We have been traveling fulltime for 3 years now and taking care of the RV is just part of the adventure!
