- A surprise inspection by lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi at the government-owned Puducherry Road Transport Corporation’s (PRTC) depot on Tuesday (1 Jan, 2019) revealed that the corporation incurs a loss of Rs 31 for every km it plies buses within the town limits. Dr. Bedi directed the Secretary and Director of the Department to initiate efforts to revive the Corporation.

Dear Madam L.G.:
Regardless of new or old vehicles, the most important thing need to be checked on any vehicle is the brake. If brakes are NOT in good condition, accident will occur is almost a guarantee. In the brake system, the brake pads (always go in pair for each wheel) do the stopping. Therefore, they wear out quickly, and require replacement after 60,000km or so, dependent on quality of brake pads, driver habit and traffics. Here is how to check brake pads on any vehicle:
(For buses, You need 2 experienced auto-mechanics to help you)
1. Use a 10 ton hydraulic jack, to jack the bus up.
2. Remove the wheel, you will see either drum brake (old vehicles) or disk brake (new vehicles).
3. Ask the mechamic remove the brake pads and show it to you. A new brake pad has a thickness of about 15-20mm (1.5 cm). If a brake pad has worn-out and lost 2/3 of its original thickness, it must be replaced.
The entire process of checking only take about 15-20 minutes.
Remember: Brake pads MUST be replaced on the two wheels (left wheel and right wheel) of each axis.
The second most important thing to check is the alignment of the 4 wheels. If the 4 wheels of a vehicle is out of alignment, the vehicle will sway (easily veer off to the right or to the left) and cause accident. Unfortunately, you or even automechanics cannot inspect alignment with human naked eyes.
Fortunately, there are equipments and trained technicians for this job.
These top 2 maintenance check are life and death matter. Do not overlook or underestimate it.

Every officer has to travel by public service once a week.
A driver is critical for any transport service. He must be comfortable, in good health, alert and sensitive to the passengers.
His co driver needs to be well rested. Hence a berth can be provided inside the bus.
Often The windows do not work. The push back button does not work.
The feedback-box is a good idea to capture everyone's feedback.
Often, a driver answers rudely. That can be improved.
Often the arrival time is beyond the schedule due to frequent rests by the driver/conductor. A passenger is left helpless then.

India needs more people like KB. Some years ago I booked to travel from Madurai to Pondi. The bus was 3 hours late. Midway Pondi passengers were asked to dismount middle of nowhere and wait to take another bus to Pondi. On entry into Pondi. Pondi passengers were asked to dismount not at the bus station but at a junction. Thats was our journey.
