Dennis Bergkamp, one of the most elegant players ever to have graced the football field. Seb Stafford-Bloor charts his rise from the streets of Amsterdam, schooled by Dutch greats Van Gaal and Cruyff, education in italian football and a sublime career at Arsenal.
A look back on the career of the “non-flying dutchman”.

As a die-hard United fan growing up in the glorious years of the rivalry with Arsenal, I hated their players. Henry made me angry at how easy he made it look and while I knew the football was brilliant I saw it all through the lens of bitter enmity. But the one player I could not hate was Dennis Bergkamp - this was an artist, mixed with a dark edge and a killer instinct. What he did on the football pitch still baffles me and I've seen the replays several times. The goal against Newcastle still seems supernatural to this day. Any other player I would have said got lucky - with Bergkamp, it was all deliberate. What a joy to behold, the epitome of poise, class, footballing IQ and a first touch that could bring a meteor under his spell.
I think it was Jon Hartson who said, "If he played in the snow, he wouldn't leave any footprints." He was just that good, one of the best to play in England and I would say anywhere in fact. What a footballer - the kind to make even opposition supporters ardent admirers.
Such an awesome comment 👍
@Harm van der Wilt Thank you! I think Zidane's accomplishments with club and country put him ahead in terms of influence - also his ability to make something out of nothing is pretty legendary, added to his control, overall vision and other magnificent attributes. I hold both players in very high esteem and while I'd have to say Zidane had the greater impact because of what he won my personal love for Bergkamp, the team he played in and the rivalry he was a big part of with United gives him a very special place in my heart
@@AeolianMusica Thank you! 👍🏼
Growing up and watching football during peak United - Arsenal rivalry, I have to say that the only other English club I respect apart from Arsenal, is United. Henry mentioned in his documentary that there was always respect between the two teams, despite fights on and off the pitch. Would love for both clubs to return to the top and fight for titles again, but sadly the game has changed a lot since then.
That's always the sign of genius. When the team's bitterest enemy lauds him.
dennisss bergkamppp denniss bergkaamp , the commentry when he scored against argentina in wc was epic
There is bear cum! There is bear cum!
The guy behind that call is Jack van Gelder, who always did radio commentary. Back in the day, you would mute your TV and turn on the radio as they were basically synched. Now, in the days of digital television it's no longer possible due to the 2-3 second delay in the feed but man... I will never forget those days.
Even as a United fan, I'd have to say that his goal vs Newcastle was simply magical
For sure!
bruno > bergkamp
@@yeshennaidu5102 I’m a Manchester united fan but you can’t do that
That Newcastle goal honestly is one of absolute favourites. So much so, I still regularly try it at 5 a side football
Agree
"...... Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! ooooohhhhhh...."
One of the best players in history! Had he been luckier with a world cup and a champions league win then his name would've been up there for most!
3:21 Old Highbury, forever in our hearts
Im a United fan but Bergkamp was secretly my favourite player growing up not just fav player outside United. I just loved watching him he was magic
These new tifo vids are on another level, I save them, pick out a good time, get my snacks ready and watch them as if it's a top notch Netflix show. Just BRILLIANT
Henry and Bergkamp are a historic footballing duo. Bergkamp always made his strike partners better. What he did for a 33 year old Ian Wright shows you what Henry might not have become if he didn't have Dennis as his dance partner.
“If he played in snow, he wouldn’t leave any footprints”
One of prem's most underrated forwards. Even as a Chelsea fan his technique was superb. That 2000-2004 team was something else.
Convinced people don't know the meaning of "underrated".
In what world is he “underrated “🤔
He wanst underrated
He is admired by all PL fans and hated by none
97-98 Bergkamp 🔥
WHO was he “underrated” by?!
The unflying Dutchman. Highly skilled player. One of the best in his generation. Still remember his goal for Holland against Argentina
Nonflying
The most iconic Premier League goal against Newcastle. Thank you for your beautiful football Dennis Bergkamp.
I’m a 3rd generation Arsenal fan and to this day Bergkamp remains the only player who’s name I had on a shirt. Seeing how play in the late 90s early 2000s was a joy and a pleasure and hey remains one of my favourite players. The iceman’s legend will spoken about for many generations to come
Back when I was just getting into football ( All thanks for FIFA Street), I remember reading about him in one of our Indian weekly journals, as the player who rarely used to fly. Searched him on the internet and ever since has been my favourite player. What a player.
Spurs fan but I massively appreciate and respect Dennis. Other-wordly player. I think he's the most elegant player ever, a better player to watch than Berbatov who was probably the closest style of player we ever had to him, Van Basten, Laudrup, Iniesta, even Zidane, all those slow, artistic players that glided around the pitch. Imo he probably has the best first touch of all time.
My favourite player ever and I've always argued one of the best ever. I was lucky to be in my late teens and early 20s when the early Wenger years happened, so I remember those days so fondly. What I always find interesting when discussing Bergkamp though is how his darker side is often ignored, and that is part of what made him the player he was, he didn't need a babysitter like many of a similar style do, the man could take care of himself.
Changed the D n A of Arsenal. Technically Arsenal's most gifted players. So elegant with ball. Touch of class.
Him and Zidane are the most elegant players in history
Honestly as a dutchman I always thought of Zidane as "the French Bergkamp" xD But I guess it works in reverse as well lol.
Berbatov!
@@azizanputra 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@shotgunpete5117 Bergkamp came before Zidane so it would make more sense to nickname Zidane after him
@@christopheranthony6412 Not highly acclaim though and not saying he better, but he got the daftest touch as good as anyone playing football and he is elagant personified. That is my thought. Laugh all you want and I'm a Liverpool fan.
thesefootballtimes articles and tifo football videos truly represent football as art.
Fantastic video Tifo, really insightful for someone who wasn’t around to appreciate Bergkamp. Could you make a video on who you think England’s best starting XI contains and why? Would be very interesting. Or are you saving that video for when the Euro’s are approaching?
Might that Netherlands Euro 96 campaign deserve a video in and of itself?
Bergkamp was my idol growing up. I always wanted to play like him. The vision desrie and fight all bundled with class. Truly shaped and changed the prem. That Newcastle goal. If you know ,you know.
Bergkamp might be the most beautifully stylistic player I've ever seen, sure the like of Ronaldinho were more flashy and brilliant. But no player imo had the touch and style of Bergkamp.
Finally this man recieving some credit and appreciation.
An absolute genius...made football an absolute work of beautiful art effortlessly!
Without a shadow of a doubt the best player Arsenal ever witnessed to play in the famous red and white!
The best first touch in history.
I actually got teary-eyed at the end of that!!! I guess Bergkamp was special enough to bring a grown man to tears?!!
That first Bergkamp illustration has a massive head and a very short arm, ironic given they go on to say he was fascinated by geometry (probably because he was, himself, geometrically challenged)
I have those two features. But sadly, the comparison immediately disappears thereafter.
For anyone who enjoyed this, Dennis Bergkamp's biography is a must read.
i went to highbury once during bergy's early stages at arsenal, as an away fan, but i was in the home end. the numpty's around me, moaning and groaning as a bergkamp pass went "astray". they didnt go astray. the players around him werent on his wavelength, and light years away from his speed of thought. quality player and excellent pro.
Thank god I could watch him play. Such a joy and a blessing.
One of the most technically gifted players I've ever seen and my personal favourite player of all time
It always brings some extra joy seeing my fellow Dutchmen being mentioned in these Tifo videos, let alone seeing a video dedicated entirely to one player. And such a sophisticated one! I think his brilliance is often underestimated here in The Netherlands, mostly because he had his best years in England in the Premier League in a time where these matches weren't widely broadcasted the way they are now. Sometimes it feels that all what's left of Bergkamp's legacy here in The Netherlands are his goal against Newcastle and his goal against Argentine, and the latter mainly because of the reacting of famous Dutch commentator Jack van Gelder.
One sidenote though: in Dutch we spell football with one L: voetbal.
Dennis Bergkamp is the reason I fell in love with football
Dennis Bergkamp was the reason why I fell in love with Football. If football is an art, then Dennis Bergkamp is the true artist.
Definition of elegance. The greatest to have played for the Arsenal imo.
Probably the most underrated footballer of all time
Do a brief history of Michael Laudrup next, please :D
Laudrup is the only player I've seen with a similar style and football brain to Bergkamp's. Some of his assists were... oof, just from another planet.
Can you do a video about liquidated clubs and which clubs you predict to dissolve (mainly those currently participating in the EFL) in the next few years. Would make an interesting video. It has always been a topic that I was and still am interested in. Going over clubs like Bury, Macclesfield, Scarborough and Chester to name a few would be an amazing topic and a long documentary featuring how poorly-run teams escalate into administration and eventual liquidation in some cases. Lots of support, Tifo!
France 98 was the first World Cup I was old enough to appreciate (I was 11) and moments like his goal sits so fondly in my mind.
History has always shown us that the best players have always been entertainers. That's why he's one of the best players. It's not numbers, not trophies but the way he entertained people. The current football world needs to realise this as soon as possible.
Hats off to TIFO, lately you have been producing some real quality content
This is the player that made me fall in love with football and Arsenal...he retired as a gunner and even though it’s tough as hell supporting that team, always stay a Gunner
Gooner
We support the gunners
Arsenal legend, football legend. So few players have the reading of the game like bergkamp did, the world seemed to slow down whenever he was the on the ball
Voetbal is spelled wrong, it’s with one l (1:35)
🤐
Greatest of all time. Bergkamp!
The premier League's greatest ever player. He was absolutely outstanding! Lightyears ahead of his time
That goal against Newcastle sums up his career in a nutshell !!!
😅
Yeah a fluke goal
@@JustMe-om2dk oh a spurs fan!
One of the best players of all time in my opinion, the flying dutchman, great video!
Can you make a video about Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola? In 2003 he was voted Chelsea’s greatest ever player. By contemporary audiences Zola often gets overlooked by Chelsea fans, and football fans in general, since the Abramovich period started because we often look at players like John Terry and Frank Lampard
quality player, probs gets overlooked cos he didn't win anything significant with chelsea, although its not hard to win Chelsea's greatest ever player pre 2004
Because Zola is a Parma legend, not a Chelsea legend. He played in Chelsea as a player already passing his prime (well PL was a retirement league at that time).
Dennis Bergkamp is, and will always be, my favorite footballer of all time!
Bergkamp was one of the best players to play in premiership, it was a joy and honour to watch him each week at Arsenal.
The only player to come close to him currently is Kevin De bruyne
Imagine Bergkamp as a manager 🔥
the non flying Dutchman!! you just loved to see him play the ball regardless of your favorite team
I was a kid when I watched him score against Argentina in 1998. It was because of him that I supported Arsenal. and it was because of him that I loved henry, and when henry moved to Barcelona I supported Barcelona until today. I knew that my love to this player will take me through a journey to the best football ever played. Arsenal in early 2000s and Barcelona after that..
As an arsenal fan of 40 years my favourite alongside ian wright. A sheer genius
my favourite arsenal player ever, as an arsenal fan. Not as good as sangare sure, but still a great
😅

OOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH
Only OG's remember the commentary of the De Boer and Bergkamp goal
his goal vs newcastle is the most unique goal i've seen yet
Bergkamp was favourite to win Ballon D'Or in 1993 but the move to Inter hampered it as the end of the year his form dipped. 1997 he was also 3rd in World Player Of The Year which I think he was also in 1993.
Gerrard said if he played in snow you wont even see his footsteps, he was that Delicate and Articulate in dribbling!
DENNIS BERGKAMP DENNIS BERGKAMP DENNIS BERGKAMP DENNIS BERGKAMP DENNIS BERGKAMP OOOOOOH
How great it would’ve been if we gave Mesut a supporting cast the same way we did for Dennis Bergkamp 🥲
Mentioning Ozil in the same sentence as Bergkamp is an insult.
Aaah men im so glad i have seen all these moments, united supporter but arsenal was a love and hate club for me, and deep admirations for there plays
Great from Tifo as usual.
Good animations for the goals
It's a miracle - one moment, the pitch is crowded and narrow. Suddenly, it is huge and wide.
One of the best attackers in Prem history.
Dennis Bergkamp ❤️❤️
Great video ⚽️
I love these videos
Bergkamp will always be the best Arsenal player for me.

DENNIS BERGKAMP, DENNIS BERGKAMP, DENNIS BERGKAMP. The legendary words of Jack van Gelder
Amazing video!
Please a Brief History of Michael Ballack.
(Dark knight of German Football)
His goal against Newcastle is still my favourite.
One word.. LEGEND. COYG!!!
He never scored a dull goal. Ever.
One of the best players to have ever played for Arsenal and he’s rarely mentioned I think
I was raised a United fan, but damn, that Arsenal '04 team was magical.
What a player he was. He's at the top with Thierry.
Dennis was always quick but seeing earlier Ajax goals of his he was quite the sprinter
Legend easily one of the best transfers in arsenal history
Can you do a tactics explained for Diego Martinez's Granada side? They've been doing amazingly well in La Liga, would love to see your breakdown
🗣 denis bergkamp denis bergkamp denis bergkamp!!
Dear Tifo Can you guys please get the tifo basketball channel running up again please I am a nba fan
I was talking to my dad about this yesterday we have a theory this born between 1990 and 1997 had the best footballing icons to look up in terms of quality in the modern game . I was born 1996 and an avid Everton fan but had the honour of watching figo , lumberg , Henry , Ronaldo , bergkamp , Robert pirez grace at their peek whist seeing the progression of Rooney , roben , CR and Messi plus many many others
Anyone else feel like hugging this video? Only me? Okay.
Along with maybe only Marco Van Basten, Bergkamp was the technically most wonderful player I've ever seen. If we were playing one of those schoolground games with the old you pick your mate, I pick my mate teams, Bergkamp is the first player I'd pick for my team, just for the sheer pleasure of watching him play.
too much pressure being 1st, Ill hand it over to that guy below
lmao
He is a legend
I have never seen a non-barcelona player love to lob the keeper so much. Dude meant business
Please make a brief history of Ruud Van Nistelrooy

I LOVE DENNIS LETS GO!!!

1991 Dutch player of the year, up against some of the toughest competition in history I imagine
