From what I've heard, PTX got the ultimate compliment when, before he passed away, Leonard Cohen (who wrote "Hallelujah") watched and heard this video and stated that it was the best version of his song he'd ever heard. Considering that everybody and their brother has covered this song, that's a hell of a compliment.

    • @rogerjones6033
      @rogerjones6033 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

He also allowed contemporary Christian singer/guitar shredder Lincoln Brewster to add some verses and call it "Another Hallelujah" which has even deeper Christian meaning to it. Lincoln performs it at Bayside Church in CA where he is a worship pastor and yes that is Lincoln on the shredding lead guitar! Here is a lyric video th-cam.com/video/_kvuIPwvqpw/w-d-xo.html There is another that actually has Lincoln talking about writing a letter to Leonard and getting his blessings!

@@ItsmeBarry Their Original song, "Run To You", will wreck your soul in the very best way possible. Background on the song:
It was written by Kevin[the beatboxer/cellist/singer/etc] and Avi(pronounced Ah-vee)[the bass singer].
It is the first original song the group has ever done.
The group had to practicing singing backwards in order to film parts of the video because they need the petals to seem like they were rising in some parts.

An introduction to Pentatonix for you:
Scott: the tall blonde guy in the middle with the first solo. He's the baritone of the group but has a range of about 4 octaves. He's just as comfortable harmonizing on the high notes as he is taking the bass line when Avi is singing. Speaking of which...
Avi: the guy with the beanie and the second solo. He's an amazing bass and doesn't have many solo parts but he always kills it when he does sing. He left the group in 2017 on good terms with the rest of the members and helped find his replacement, Matt.
Kirstin: the only female in the group, she had the third solo. She has the least solos of the main 3 that you'll find, but she always kills it when she does sing(examples are Say Something, Sound of Silence, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, all of which are among their best work)
Mitch: He's the man with the amazing voice and the final solo in this song. He's a counter tenor, and has a purely angelic voice.
Kevin: an AMAZING beatboxer, that's his main role, but he occasionally shows off his beautiful tenor voice (Imagine is a great example) and his skills with the cello, which he can play while beatboxing simultaneously.
Pentatonix got their start on an old competition show called the Sing Off where acapella groups competed against each other for a $200,000 cash prize and a recording contract. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch sang in choir together in school and have been best friends since they were teenagers. They found Avi through a friend and Kevin through one of his "cello boxing"(playing the cello and beatboxing) videos that went viral. They won the competition, you can still find the performances on TH-cam. It's amazing to watch them grow throughout the show. Unfortunately, the record label dropped them shortly after they moved out to make music, so they persevered and self produced for a while until they were picked up by another label. They are the only acapella group to ever win a Grammy, and they have won 3: for their Daft Punk medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene ft. Dolly Parton. They're an amazing group, every one of them is one of the most talented singers in the world, and they have never released a bad song imo. Welcome my friend, a wonderful world of musical bliss awaits.

Barry, welcome to the Pentatonix world. I'm soooo pleased to see you jump into this water as well. They've been around almost a decade, largely doing covers, but their own work is exceptional as well, and they can do a mashup that'll blow your socks off just with the intricacies of the harmonies and changes. This song includes Avi Kaplan singing those glorious bass notes (shivers every time) and he's since left the group and has wonderful music on his own. Future catalog suggestions: Imagine, Home (a mashup of numerous songs), Bohemian Rhapsody, and you'll love all their holiday remakes around Christmas. They're amazing. Wonderful to see your reaction to them, and yes, I've yet to see a truly bad performance from them. Cheers.

It's me Barry they are the most successful acapella group in history. This video has had 500+ million views. They do a mix of amazing covers (their breathtaking cover of “Mad World” came out today!), and original songs. Check their history. Suffice it to say. It’s taken a whole lot of work for them to perfect their craft. So much work that the bass, Avi Kaplan,( long dark hair and beard) found the routine of arranging-rehearsing-recording-touring was daunting, since his mom was ill. He amicably left the group in the fall of 2017, and helped them find his replacement, Matt Sallee, (a graduate of the Berkelee College of Music in Boston, with a degree in Vocal Performance!) They have millions of albums sold worldwide; their videos have gotten 6 BILLION views on TH-cam, and they have millions of followers (including me)! Scott Hoying (baritone, tall blond) and Mitch Grassi (counter tenor, a visual chameleon of sorts-he ALWAYS looks different!) were childhood friends. They met Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano)in high school. They decided to audition for a singing talent show on NBC called “The Sing-Off” in Fall 2011-so they found Avi through a friend (he’s opera-trained, a true basso PROFUNDO), and Kevin Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire; speaks fluent Mandarin, is a master cellist, and had just graduated from Yale University, headed to medical school!) on TH-cam. (Where he was CELLOBOXING, a combo of beatboxing and playing cello!) They all met the day before the audition. And they WON the competition. They got a recording contract-all moved to LA, and lost that contract-the label said acapella wouldn’t “sell”...OOPS on that! They started making TH-cam videos, and developing a fan base. They made a “Daft Punk Medley” video for $400, and filmed it with an iPad in a kitchen closet. That arrangement and recording won them their first Grammy. They then got another recording contract. And have been full-steam ahead ever since. They now have THREE Grammys. Not bad for music that “won’t sell”! I’d check out their older material, but also some newer tracks. They have a new original song, “Happy Now”...and an older original that’s my favorite is “Run to You” (written by Avi and Kevin). We PTX fans are PENTAHOLICS! Everyone was sad when Avi left, but Matt Sallee has done a stellar job in the three years he’s been singing bass with them. Avi has his own solo music now; Mitch and Scott have their own duo “SuperFruit”; Kirstin has been on Broadway in “Kinky Boots” and Kevin has HIS own solo (fantastic talent) stuff. It’s an enormous body of work in 9 years. That’s why we Pentaholics call it a “rabbit hole” for PTX on TH-cam. This was done in 2016. By the way, it’s wonderful that this moved you so deeply. PTX sounds EXACTLY the same in concert-I’ve seen them twice now-check out their LIVE version of “Hallelujah” they did for their 2016 Christmas special. Sounds. Exactly. The. Same!!

Are you getting sleep at night? I sure hope so! I've been getting a lot of sleep. My back has been very painful for about a week now. I've been staying in bed with my feet as high up as I can get the bed to go. That takes a lot of tension away from my lower back. I got an adjustable bed about the time I bought this house. It really helps remove pressure from the nerves that are being crushed in my lumbar spine. It's only a temporary fix for a day or two, but at least I can get some work done around the house.
I hope you are doing well. I have missed chatting with you!

That's great that your snow has melted. I was afraid you'd be celebrating Easter with your snow boots on! 😆 The weather here has been upper 30s low 40s, which is good because we've had lots of rain, drizzle, fog, clouds, and dreariness for over a week now. Yesterday I saw the sun for the first time in a long time, but by the time I got out of the house it was gone, replaced by dark clouds. Then rain again today. Just happy it wasn't snow.
I've actually been sleeping a lot, not always at night. I found some sleep hypnosis videos on YT... may give that a try. I also have had bad pain in my lower back, so I know what you're going through. Can't get comfortable laying or sitting. I don't have an adjustable bed, but I might try propping my legs up on some big pillows. It's worth a try.
Let's hope our Pat is fine and too busy enjoying life.

A large percentage of performers find their nitch and pretty much stick with 'what works for them'. Not happenin' with Pentatonix. Every aspect of their style is unique. From the adaptations of the songs they cover to the choice of background settings in each video, they give you something different every time. I cannot say I like everything they do, but of the things they do that I like, I REALLLLLLLY like!!! They are in a class they have created all by themselves and I wish them nothing but continued success.

B☘️, Hmm Christmasy?? Well there may be a couple of small places where the tone or a particular note sung in a certain way (awesome and very clear explanation right????🤣) may lend itself in that direction, but I wouldn’t say that overall it gives me that feeling.
I commented in much more detail on this a while back, but…
It reminds me that we are all human and with that comes both beauty and imperfections. Sometimes those two are even intertwined. Maybe our life with its imperfections, even cold and broken at times can be a Hallelujah.
Thanks for sending us back here. I don’t get tired of this song, and PTX touches the heart with this one. ❤
The original lyrics to this song are more bold. Different versions lead to different interpretations and feelings I think.
    Thanks again!

Pentatonix is a mix of vocal treasures. You know Barry, this song is special to me and very emotional. I only have an 8-year-old nephew who his mother married another man took him away in hiding and it is a devastating sadness and a brave fight in court to be able to have access to him. He's like an angel and sings this song masterfully. It is my weak and inevitable point to cry. 💙

I'm so happy for you, Barry. I'm glad you found Pentatonix. I'm sure you've already heard they are one of the best acapella groups around, and this is true. What I haven't seen mentioned, because my piers are too modest to mention it, is the fan base they bring along with them. You will find Pentaholics, as we like to term ourselves, to be some of the most supportive, nicest, most passionate fans on the interwebs. So long as you are reacting to our guys and girl, we'll be here. I don't think there is a single song of theirs I can recall I truly dislike, and I'm sure others feel the same way.
There are other groups, of course, and they're all very good. But, this one is ours, so to speak. Lol.

    Hey B ☘️!
What’s up Buttercup? Butterfinger? (That ain’t bold it is a candy bar, just sayin? 🙄 Wow 🤯, that didn’t take long?) Butter Cinnamon Sugar Toast? 🤔
Well. Your woman Annie 🤡 and I are alone again. We took AB home last Saturday. It was very sad but this time I think she was ready to go. She had a “date” with Kevin on Sunday that was cancelled, thank the goodness. However, Kevin’s older sister is getting married and I think she is going to ask AB to be the flower girl. With Kevin as the ring bearer. 😬 I bet she told me 10 times she was marrying Kevin when she was here. I said, oh no you gotta decide about your life first, what you are going to do, you know like go to college? She said, You are so silly I dont need to go to college to get married?!?! 🤔 I said, yeah but you need to make your own way in life and figure out you and what you want to do, you don’t want to depend on no man?!?! She said, you don’t know what you are talking about! Yes child, but do I?!?! 🤔
We don’t have long until Evil Bro #1 😈 and his wife will be here. He is planning some “reunion” which basically means all of the kids and grandkids and great grandkids. As in Annie’s. Sigh. 😔 I am already tired thinking about it because it sounds like a zoo to me? But he is bossing us around the closer we get to him arriving. Which is annoying in the extreme. 😬
Time for my summer complaint about the weather. We have had a really mild summer, which basically means highs in the 90s. But that all changes this week with highs over 100 every single day and up to 105. It is going to be a long month of August. I am ready for cool weather, sweatshirts and not sweating. 😬
Are you still looking for me a dude? The answer to that had better be a big YES (sorry shouty.) I kinda found a dude, not really exactly, kinda sorta but not at all?!?! 🤔 I mean I could most likely have found a dude, I have actually known him for a long time, we once worked together but we worked from home and his is in Connecticut?!?! Anywho, he sent me a FB message that said, Yo, what’s up? I mean for opening lines I would give that a 2 out of 10 but as a former coworker it was fine?!?! Maybe. I said, Hey name, I even gave him a special name, I do that a lot, I bet people find that to be weird but here we all are?!?! Anywho I said, Hey name, what’s the haps?! He replied with, not much, are you single?! 😬 I said, hold one moment let me check, (pause), yup I sure am! He said, why the pause? I said, why not?! He said, you are still weird. I said, you are still judgemental about my weirdness, what’s the point? He said, touché, weird is better than boring and better than dumb, and dumb you are not. I said, ummmm, thanks, I think? I guess? He said, want to come to “His last name Mountain”? This is how he refers to his home and he calls me weird? I said, sure, when? He said, now? I said, welllll, errr, how about some plans and what is the rush? He said, I need friends and they need to be of the female variety. I said, hmmmm, I kinda wanna be more special than that, not just an option in a freakin list, geez (name), who is being weird now? He said, yeah that wasn’t very smooth I am tired and off my game, but when you coming? I said, how about we talk for awhile and see how we get along and then we can make plans? He said, okay, since I messed this up?
I mean honestly B ☘️, who is the weird one in this convo?! 🙄
All of that nonsense to say….you are still on the hook to find me a dude!?!?!!!!! Let’s get this show on the road! 👍🏻
How are you? What’s going on? Are you okay? What do I need to know? I actually need to know it all, as your ST this is a given! Time to give me the info! 👏🏻
Okie dokie, I need to sleep.
Let me hear from you, yeah?!?! 👍🏻

Hi Maggie, there are CC on this video but unfortunately they get confused between the song lyrics and what I’m saying. I’ve looked up the lyrics for you, I hope this helps:
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
      The baffled king composing Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah, hmm
Well, your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to the kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Well baby, I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
      It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Well, maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who has seen the Light
      It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah
      Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You had to know I would come back here, to the beginning? You would be surprised to know, probably not surprised, that I have this memorized from the time I watched it to get you over 2 Million views? 😂
I was reading through the comments on your post and had to virtually walk away from one of the comments? I don’t understand people at all, I can’t even say most times because it is pretty much all of the time? 🤔 But walk away I did, a bit unusual for me, but since I have already got into it with someone on your channel I decided today was not the day to go for round 2 with someone else? 😬 Sigh. 😔
How are you doing? Did operation “go home” work as you expected?!?! I mean that kinda sorta sounds rude, I don’t mean it to sound rude, I was trying to be smart with the code so people wouldn’t know what I mean. You know, that ST code that you seem to be so great at and I am, well, not so great at?!?! And I just ended a sentence with a preposition (I think) and I do not like that at all? 🤔
Okay on to the next video, what will it be. 🤔
Hey wanna do a podcast, film it on YT and offer it up on podcast platforms too? No I have no clue what the subject might be, that is where 2 heads are better than 1 comes in? 🤔

I said in a comment somewhere that I had left you alone for far too long and I decided it would be fun to bug you. 🐜 🐞 I didn’t hear anything back, which is okay, it is just that it is hard to bug someone I do not hear from and it kinda sorta takes all of the fun out of the bug. 🐛 Huh? 🤔
Fun out of the bug? 🐜 🐛 🐞 Okie Dokie? 🤔
But in my world of thinking and in my brain no response means agreement so I am cleared to go. Thank you for the clearance (that you didn’t even know you gave.) 👍🏻
So after a full day and night of planning, consulting maps from around the world (I have no idea what this means), using a compass 🧭, a protractor, other nautical instruments and me book (book? 🤔) I have come up with a very detailed plan of execution. 👍🏻
Or I may have just finished one book and started another but that kinda ruins the drama of all of this so carry on, Labeth, carry on. 👍🏻
I have come up with a plan, not really a plan, more like an effort, well not really an effort more like an Operation! It is Top Secret 🤫 called Operation Bug B ☘️.
I will be commenting on a whole lot of videos, brand new comments….who knows what they will be about, that is top secret 🤫 too (don’t worry, I had a top secret clearance one time, no I don’t anymore but who cares?) The point is I know how to conduct a Top Secret Operation called Bug B ☘️! 👍🏻

Barry☘️, this is the video that introduced me to your channel. I had heard the Pentatonix version when they first came out with it. During a difficult time, I wanted to listen to their version again. I looked it up. Your video popped up and the rest is history. ❤️
You referenced Dimash - SOS and that is where I immediately went after watching this reaction and then straight to It’s Me Barry Too after that. Your channels became THE channels I watched, and I quickly devoured all of them more than once.
Thank you for your heartfelt reactions. I appreciate you, my friend. 🍄
I know what speaks to me, makes me feel things, but you do help me understand what it is that does this. When you talked about the surge and the retreat (with Lana) That helped explain some.
I think this version just needs to be felt as you say, and that I just want to let myself be drawn in by the beauty. Like my grandmother used to say, “Some things are better felt than telt”.
    That said though…………
I did a good bit of thinking about the lyrics. I am going to spare everyone all of my thoughts on them. 🙂 I don’t need to go into all that. 😁
Here is a VERY condensed version.
I was noticing the religious an then the temporal contrast.
I like that the chorus is Hallelujah.
The reference to David soothing Saul with his lyre. And here, beautiful music is reaching out and touching our hearts over and over again. There is just something that music can do that little else can.
Our connection to that which is bigger than we are in contrast with our own humanity.
In allowing room in our hearts to accept our human imperfections (cold and broken Hallelujah) maybe we can find places for gratitude in our lives.
I so often just need to get out of my own way, embrace my imperfections, embrace life in all of it’s glory and pain and open my heart to whatever that may mean for me. 💕

      Sorry I missed this comment.
Yes, I agree, music holds a power that’s hard to explain to it move us, it can lift our spirits, it can take us away to another place, it can bring us back in time, it can make us live experiences that we’ve never lived.
We all should embrace life, like you said that includes the good the bad, the happy and the sad.
We are lucky to experience it.

Avi Kaplan, the second soloist and bass in this was with them 6 years and had to leave for his own good.
He now has a solo career and has 4 EP's out.
He is a fabulous bass and baritone with some tenor. He is also a Polyphonic Overtone Singer.
He is much more in to the folk genera so his songs are mostly soft, soothing songs.
He writes over 95% of his own music.
While he was with PTX, his mother in California was having a second bought with cancer and the schedule of PTS was
so hectic he could not get away to be with her and his dad.
He and his mother used to roam up near the Sequoias looking for arrowheads, stones and finding sage..
These times were very precious to him, so while he was not able to get to her, he wrote this song promising to get back to her.
    Sage and Stone.

Interesting question….does Hallelujah make me feel Christmasy? Not at all. I love the song, and loved it the second I heard Leonard Cohen. I think it’s beautiful, although dark as well. I don’t think it was ever considered a Christmas song, until more recently. And Pentatonix certainly made it very popular. The jury is still out as to whether it “counts” as a Christmas song. Either way, it’s hauntingly beautiful ♥️
