@@EISAlaska I have worked in the fishing industry for many years here in Newfoundland. Have see many that weighed hundreds of pounds. One of the biggest I have handled, I had 8 pounds in two cheeks!!!
Mark your GPS where that string started... Yee Haw! you're on 'Em now! Buying a share of the catch sounds good, but barring a share of the whole fun shooting match sounds better!
Great catch, good haul o' fish..20:20 should keep the water ways free of debris n rubbish, even if it's not yours, have respect for the environment..sea, lakes n rivers..bush even.. kaapai vid ✌️🤙🙏🤙👍
That was just kelp, it'll break down naturally. However we do dispose of trash when we haul it in on the line, and do very much agree that we must keep the ocean and other parts of nature clean.
The thing I like the most is as a family how you all work together for the goal like we do on our farm in Ct. We are getting ready to order a share just haven’t decided yet but it’s worth it.
Thanks bfarm44. We appreciate your support and love to hear about you folks working together. Farming is tough, and you guys really work hard feeding families around the world. Thank you for all you do and best wishes from all of us!
Hi from Australia, I really enjoyed the video, I have subscribed. If you could talk about what the species are as you catch them that would make it more interesting and educational. Even the ones that get thrown back, Its nice to learn new species. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos. Cheers John
Being a recreational fisherman, can you explain the permitting process. How many permits each year do you get and what fish seasons do you fish. Also are there limits or pounds on each permit? Thanks love your videos.
Hi GreenGus. Our management system is a complicated mix of federal and state fisheries. Some are limited entry, some open access and others Individual fishing quota. I am going to do an overview of Alaska's fisheries and how they are managed, so stay tuned! Thanks for watching.
He's behind the camera! Lol. They swap out on the pinning hooks duty. Thinking about letting him take the rail for a set or two. But then I get the boring job! HAHA!

Is mom a born alaskan?, I know I would love to go on a trip, and watch yall, but I'm disabled vet, glad to watch your videos, I was in the navy. Love the ocean. I've been in probly the worst sea storm ever, but I know if I went fishing again, I'd be eating crackers, and trying not to get sea sick lol. Lost my sea legs back in 1977, lol I was a boatsunsmate, on phones. Kinda miss the ocean. Thanks for videos. Shallom.
On your next question and answer could you explain how fishing/boat licensing works in Alaska ? Also can you say how much the wholesalers pay you guys per lb for halibut ? In western NY they charge $36-$38 lb. Cod is anywhere from $10.99 - $13.99 lb or where I shop it's $9.99 if you buy 2 lbs or more at a time. Great videos. especially upgrading the new boat. Can't wait until it's ready to fish. Thanks.
If, by chance, one day you get back to the dock and there is a great big Uncle Fester looking one legged dude standing there drooling, I'll be comin' for dinner! Been too long back on the desert side of the mountains!
If we kept some for ourselves in this instance it would come off our fishable quota. There is a subsistence option that we're allowed to participate in to get some for personal use.
i was fishing long time ago with Tyson's fishing fleet out of Dutch Harbor there. we caught a fish, looked like a cabbage kid head, with a smurf blue almost a liquid body. you couldn't pick it up it just ran thru your fingers. i didn't touch that . First time seeing something that ugly. scared me some.
That was an undersized halibut. What he meant is that we have to measure every fish that comes over the rail, any measuring at least 32" are a legal sized halibut. "High grading" is when you release smaller fish in favor of keeping larger fish, which you get a higher price for at the canneries. Doing so is illegal, and can levy some serious fines.
I have been looking through Etsy for things I need for my own addiction. I see quite a bit of Fish Skin Leather. I watched several videos about making it and compared to other leathers it is fairly low labor. Have you folks ever been approached? I'm assuming your processor might be. I am always in favour of using every bit of fish we catch.
I worked on a long line grouper boat out of Florida. The captain said we had the first full line of keepers he ever had ! Have you ever had a full line of keepers yet ?
Matt, why do you always make sure the halibut are flipped on their backs after the gills are cut? As you can tell I am only a fresh water recreational fisherman. I love watching your family work as a team, and Dad is always so calm and cool.
It's so the blood doesn't settle in the white side discoloring it, better presentation in fresh markets. It's more out of habit at this point, all of our fish goes into our own store.
Another great set. How many pounds of halibut are you allowed to catch? Can you increase your quota by getting a larger permit? Wish you continued good luck!
Back when this was filmed we were able to sell them on our online store, but now they are closed for the year. All of the ones we caught this fall were for personal use and giveaways.
Sure. All of our fish go to our own market though, and we don't have anyone who has voiced interest in the offal products. On the scale we are its just not feasible.
@John Prince Hi John. If you look closely around the 0:39 mark you will see the roller just inside the upright line guide. It has a UHMW insert in the roller tube and is held in place by a 3/4" bolt with a turned shaft on the end. It turns very smooth and is maintenance free.

I just realized your brother is behind the camera. He is doing a very good job.
It amazes me how a halibut fits all its ‘internals’ in such a small space… a bit like your last video of the wiring in your new boat 😊
Haha, good comparison, Scott.

Have you ever thought about putting a line down while chunking the left over bait in the water?
Nah, that wouldn't be possible with our setup. Plus the daylight hours work out well for the way we do it here.
Is there any allowance for fish for your own consumption and that was an awesome set 60 inch is a really nice fish stay safe out there my friends

Lyn what do you mean by you can’t fish high-grade when you threw that halibut back
Sorry Len not lyn..

I like to eat. How are fish different than land animals so that we are ok with long line fishing but would never long line rabbits? Good content.

I'd love to order some fresh halibut, or cod, if the price was right
Hi Danny, we don't do fresh sales generally, hard to coordinate. Check out our website for our frozen fillet selection! eisalaska.com
Good looking family, God bless.
Good Job
Great video guys. New Zealand here. What do you do with the bye catch?
Ok guys I'm subscribe from Indonesia
Welcome!
Wow those are some beauties! How do you get your bait? Do you cut it yourself and what is it?
Most of it we buy from the plant we deliver to. Its pollock mostly, some squid and cod. We buy it in solid 40-50 lb blocks and cut it ourselves.
How often do you get bitten off or find straightened hooks?
Not often, only had 1 or 2 that could have been from halibut getting off. We don't target the huge barn doors.
Another great set. How many pounds of halibut are you allowed to catch? Can you increase your quota by getting a larger permit? Wish you continued good luck!
So yall eat all the yelloweye yous catch or give to family and friends and stuff? or do yall sell those to the fish market also?
Back when this was filmed we were able to sell them on our online store, but now they are closed for the year. All of the ones we caught this fall were for personal use and giveaways.

Is there no market/demand for Monkfish or Skate in the Alaskan peoples diet?
You had some big fish there, how long do the Halibut take to grow to say 100 pounds?
I'm not really sure about that, Dylan. I would think 5 years or so for a legal sized halibut, but that's just a guess.
Nice.. I'd love to volunteer sometime.
ME, TOO !!
This is fascinating. How does one start doing this for a living?
I know it's one more thing to do, but you can totally eat halibut livers.
Sure. All of our fish go to our own market though, and we don't have anyone who has voiced interest in the offal products. On the scale we are its just not feasible.
I don't believe I ever asked yall but what's the biggest halibut yall can remember catching?
Nothing really huge, but maybe 70” or so.
Why does the long line not have some kind of roller where it comes across the railing? Just curious.
@John Prince Hi John. If you look closely around the 0:39 mark you will see the roller just inside the upright line guide. It has a UHMW insert in the roller tube and is held in place by a 3/4" bolt with a turned shaft on the end. It turns very smooth and is maintenance free.

They are called gangions around here. Here's a tutorial on how we make them! th-cam.com/video/LIv9lZUagIs/w-d-xo.html
