The major factor really is will. Coby’s goal is to become an admiral and change the system. But fighting in a war up against the man who he owes his own goal to. He disagreed with the marines goal to execute ace and how they continued the war he did not agree with their goals here which means he didn’t want to be a pawn for them to use. He would fight luffy it’s not a problem hurting each other in a good fight but stopping him from saving his brother ? Coby went in strong to try and attack luffy but the difference in willpower overwhelmed him. Coby is just as true to his goal as luffy is , it’s just in this instance luffy was fighting to save his brother whereas Coby was fighting like he said - pointlessly. If it had been the other way around I’m sure Coby would’ve done a number on luffy.

That's also what Smoker did with the Strawhats they even have a relatively good relationship it's not unreasonable for Luffy to trust Smoker with his kid. As far as ages go, Smoker looks to be a gen above Luffy, Garp was a gen above Roger evidenced by Rogers kid being about the same age as Garps grandkid. Coby on the otherhand is younger than Luffy. It would also be odd for Coby to grow so much that he'd be a challenge for Luffy considering how much stronger luffy was than him to begin with, it would discredit luffys own growth. Smoker however started out stronger than Luffy. If the new generation parallels Smoker is Garp not Coby, though its unclear at this point who Coby is supposed to represent from the past, more likely he's the face of the new marines after the inevitable overhaul of the current system
Ever notice how he only uses Bullet on people he doesn't want to fight? (usopp, koby, etc) Edit: Sorry, I had just gotten into One Piece at the time. Like one of the replies said, Bullet is just a close ranged move. He had used it against Don Krieg and Wapol, but it is never directly said in the Anime until he used it against Usopp and later Koby. It's just a coincidence that both fights parallel each other. Hopefully this clears this up 👍

I see some folk laughing about how Luffy took Coby out so easily and with a weak attack/not his strongest. But you gotta think How Coby was in the very first episode when he first met Luffy, and how far Luffy is ahead of Coby when it comes to fighting n all that. Coby has come a loooong way from then. And so has Luffy. So it's only natural Luffy would still be far ahead of him. Coby is doing some high level stuff and even had the resolve to go at Luffy head on. He's no chump anymore. I thought the timing sucked because Luffy was trying to save his brother there. That's a hek of a time to get in Luffys' way. That had to be hard for Coby to make that decision. Also, Luffy had a lil burst of speed when Coby did his 'shave'. So he got to Coby before Coby anticipated it. That's why it looked like he just ran into his fist. Clashing like that made that punch all the more powerful. Coby will definitely be an admiral by the end.

In my opinion, this is one of the saddest moment of the Saga. Luffy acted exactly as he did with Usopp. No time wasted. The same, identical "Bullet" to end it once and for all Run straight forward without saying a word. This hit hard.

That is the one kind of hard thing about this war, and Coby really brings this to light: in the world of One Piece, the Marines are the "good guys". Sure, we can see their corruption, but to the world, and even in their own thoughts, they are just doing what they are meant to do. Coby knows that to accomplish his dream he has to stand up to Luffy because it is his job, and in this world, Luffy is technically the bad guy for being a pirate. Hell the world is supposed to be rooting against Whitebeard in this and yet we are rooting for him because we see him as a nice guy who cares about his underlings. We see a lot of pirates like this. To the reader, the Marines are painted in a bad light because there are so many of them that seem to be bad guys when in reality, they are just hardened and we see them mostly interact with pirates, who of course they will be against. Just having an arc where Smoker worked with Luffy and we got to see the Marines in a better light had us liking them more, and even though we ALL hate Akainu he was technically just doing his job...albeit going a little overboard especially when he was going to kill Coby but still. Getting to see more of the humanity of the marines through Coby is definitely something we need to see more of.

Koby is an absolute chad, he didn't back down, he did what he want's to do and is part of his dream. He was willing to stand fight despite knowing he'd lose. And Luffy respected that by going in and punching him, he could of just avoided. But it would be rude to Koby and his dream to just ignore him, so he decided to treat him like the Marine and thus enemy that he is.
I felt bad for Coby before he even got punched, like he's seen how strong Luffy is, and now it's even worse because Luffy is pissed, he literally stood no chance, even if Luffy didn't use his gomu gomu no, he still would've been one shot.

Everyone is saying Luffy used his weakest punch to defeat him. Gomu Gomu no Bullet is more powerful than the Gomu Gomu no Pistol because of the close range and no loss of momentum. You also have to add in the fact that Coby used Soru and rammed his face against Luffys fist.
As funny Luffy not hesitating to whale Coby in the nose is, this is a good scene. Coby's one of the weakest participants in the war, but he had a stronger will than most of the fully grown soldiers there. He had the right mindset and that's much more significant than him being strong

After the timeskip, Coby has mastered his Rokushiki techniques.In "Episode of Luffy"m he shows to be able to use a technique similar to Rankyaku, but done with his arms. He's definitely learning skills that were favored by CP9, but these skills seemed to have been taught by Garp when he trained Coby.
AT this point Coby literally decided fight someone on the same strength as a warlord. It takes guts to stand up against your own friend. Plus that friend is super strong.

And so has Luffy. So it's only natural Luffy would still be far ahead of him.
Coby is doing some high level stuff and even had the resolve to go at Luffy head on. He's no chump anymore. I thought the timing sucked because Luffy was trying to save his brother there. That's a hek of a time to get in Luffys' way. That had to be hard for Coby to make that decision.
Also, Luffy had a lil burst of speed when Coby did his 'shave'. So he got to Coby before Coby anticipated it. That's why it looked like he just ran into his fist. Clashing like that made that punch all the more powerful. Coby will definitely be an admiral by the end.

That is the one kind of hard thing about this war, and Coby really brings this to light: in the world of One Piece, the Marines are the "good guys". Sure, we can see their corruption, but to the world, and even in their own thoughts, they are just doing what they are meant to do. Coby knows that to accomplish his dream he has to stand up to Luffy because it is his job, and in this world, Luffy is technically the bad guy for being a pirate. Hell the world is supposed to be rooting against Whitebeard in this and yet we are rooting for him because we see him as a nice guy who cares about his underlings. We see a lot of pirates like this. To the reader, the Marines are painted in a bad light because there are so many of them that seem to be bad guys when in reality, they are just hardened and we see them mostly interact with pirates, who of course they will be against. Just having an arc where Smoker worked with Luffy and we got to see the Marines in a better light had us liking them more, and even though we ALL hate Akainu he was technically just doing his job...albeit going a little overboard especially when he was going to kill Coby but still. Getting to see more of the humanity of the marines through Coby is definitely something we need to see more of.
Sorry for responding to that old comment but yeah, I’m entirely sure we‘ll see much more of Coby in the future. I even think he‘ll be Luffy’s final fight by the end of One Piece
