Rajaji in his introduction address of bhajagovindham sung by MSS amma music said that songs without bhakthi it is empty tinsel. He adds Sankaracharya has packed in bhajagovindam the concepts of life with bhakthi. For musicians as well as listeners it needs no mention music will be complete only when it is conglomerated or embedded with bhakthi. Bhakthi and gyana is beyond religion or caste and creed. Thigaraja, tulsidasa, purandaradasa, and Narayana bhattadri some among many composers have by their path of music have seen God or secured bliss of God. It is great that many musicians of public praise protested against the decision of music academy.

The sankracharya spoke in support of caste system if you watch his videos.
Why do we need to take authenticity of rajaji he might be wrong na.
TMK gives some new perspective to carnatic music taking it to several places, and I think he's right on that.

At one point Aroor claims TMK brought out some uncomfortable truths about carnatic music.
Now let us ask some uncomfortable truths about TMK - he is on record sympathizing with 26/11 terrorist when he was given the death sentence. He preached that our society is barbaric for taking his life.
But around the same time, he praised and encouraged the criminals who killed RSS workers in certain states. Is this not an example of hate against a particular community??
Next example in media- the Radia tapes saga- certainly it was the most shameful chapter of Indian media when media folks influenced policy by forcing PMO to appoint certain people as ministers. Isnt this against democracy?? These same media incited communal violence, justified Kashmiri Hindu genocide and got national awards for it.
One of them even called Hon President Dr APJ Kalaam as bomb daddy. Did Aroor protest against any of the above?? Does this mean Aroor approves of these anti-democratic and hateful actions of his colleagues?? Please answer these uncomfortable questions.

A great interview with the Trichur Brothers on a subject that has generated a lot of controversy. The Trichur brothers have articulated their views with conviction, about music transcending religious and social barriers. Besides Yesudas, whom they cited, there are others like the nadaswaram-playing artists Sheik Mehboob Subhani and his wife Begum Kaleeshabi Mehboob, who are Carnatic music instrumentalists and have played at many venues. In fact, they have also performed with TM Krishna at some venues. But TM Krishna has stirred up unnecessary controversy by targeting a particular community with immature, flippant statements with more nuisance value than anything constructive or substantive. If he is truly a refined musician, he ought to cultivate humility and respect for his fellow musicians and for all communities, particularly the one that has provided the basis for his knowledge and skills as a Carnatic music artist .

Is Carnatic music dominated by Brahmins? Of course. But does that equate to discrimination? Absolutely not. Opportunity for learning is given to all. However there are just a handful of people who would invest the kind of time and energy required for this art form. Also, the field is not monetarily rewarding in the initial phases. Not everyone accepts these predicaments. And coincidentally a majority of these handful turn out to be Brahmins. So TMK's argument is devoid of fact. Also, in an art form which is closely associated with Bhakti, the deity and composer are supreme and revered. There is no need to verbally abuse them to prove a point. Filthy language should not and will not be tolerated.

TM KRISHNA is undoubtedly an accomplished and erudite vocalist about whom none of his detractors have any thing adverse to say about his music credentials. His singing is devotional, soulful and mesmerising and he praises the Lord and his avatars with all reverence like any other musician.
Awards are given on the basis of the merit of a Person's excellence in his field and not based on his personal views which may be anti traditional . Many of the music stalwarts had a nasty , tarnished and sullied personal morality in their lifetime and their personal integrity is debatable . Yet they were honoured !
The opposition is only to Krishna's modern views against conventional Carnatic heritage and customs, and its Brahminical mode of adherence to age old tradition.. Unlike the other musicians who have become famous because of their talents only , TMK stands as an intellectual colossus with an analytical mind to study the dynamics of Carnatics music. Hence he has been awarded the prestigious Magsaysay Award.
His rational view about the Mridhangam having cow skin with leather straps, and his views about the legendary MS having been born in a Dasi family of non Brahmins are true and factual. These are irritating data to the Gomatha and Hindutva fanatics. However a large section of music lovers are behind TM KRISHNA .
If Carnatic Music is so sacrosanct why are they bothered about criticism against it ?

Y is the Academy giving an award to a person like TMK who is avoiding them for a decade? What is this unnecessary appeasement?!
He says Carnatic music is Brahmin dominated. The roots of our traditional dance and music can be traced to Devdasi community. Many legends come from that community. Bharat Ratna MSS is not a Brahmin but revered by all. When you point it out to this fool he says she brahminised herself. In today's world anyone can practise any art. Even so, so what if something is dominated by Brahmins? Shilpa shastra is dominated by Vishwakarmas, business is dominated by marwaris and baniyaas, nadaswaram and folk arts are dominated by other communities, these things are passed down the families but dsnt mean others can't practise. I wish more artists will boycott TMK. U can't give an award based on 'artistic merit' alone when the so called artist is spouting venom against the very system which nurtures the art? Will u appreciate the artistic talent of someone coming to destroy ur house or draw boundaries?

I don't understand why people can't accept Carnatic music in it's own way. Why they want to change it's style, system? These kind of finger pointing was not that much done towards Hindustani music. I remember a Bengali co worker from Kolkata blaming the whole Carnatic system and the practitioners that it is very difficult, it is after all music, why it needs so many rules and restrictions. See even if we change the rules will he come and sing? The point what Raga sisters made is very correct. Brahmins as well as Hindus are soft targets. We dont create violence, we are prone to forgiving and forgetting others mistakes as we follow Sanatana dharma, where we see god in every being. If TMK had commented anything about Other religion Gods, the entire scenario would have changed. Anybody can blame hindu beliefs, gods and culture. As a Sanatana dharmi we should always try to protect our culture. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

Krishna has played into the hands of Politicians. He can have an ideology / belief but that does not bean degrading others. I dont think any one stops people from learning Carnatic Music. Agree there are challenges to break into the top ranks where some level of protectionism is there like any other profession. But if you have talent no one can stop your progression. At the same time does not mean you can throw slanderous comments against the icons of the Carnatic art and expect people to agree such kind of recognition. Hope one positive thing that can come out of this is the top Carnatic singers, the majority of whom currently from a single community take all efforts to take Carnatic music to masses through their programs. I never understood one thing ever since I started tuning to Carnatic music. Why is music academy considered that big and that award is considered the ‘highest’ award? They are a bunch of humans and they have made several mistakes. I hear the list of musicians who got that award as the proof of their greatness. But, there are several great musicians who were never awarded. Why is music academy that great?

    • @sriBsai
      @sriBsai 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Great question. I think it’s just a matter of emphasis that Carnatic musicians have placed on that particular institution over the years, in terms of standards and rigor. It’s like scientists being awarded Nobel prize for groundbreaking work or people being awarded civilian awards like Padma agree/Padmabhushan - while it’s not that these award winners are the only people who have done important work and have contributed to science and society, it’s just a form of recognition coming from an organization that upholds values such as high technical prowess, ability to contribute original work, social work and many other factors. Music Academy or for that matter any organization/system is ultimately created by humans and people’s contributions are then evaluated based on those accepted standards. Music Academy values certain standards of music as quality music and people consider it important when such an organization is recognizing one’s work. Imagine you working with a boss who values quality work of high standard and sets the bar super high - would you not feel happy when you receive a word of appreciation of them? Similarly, music academy’s recognition might mean a lot for people in the field of Carnatic music. Now, why certain artists were/are not awarded and is the selection process transparent, devoid of political intentions etc., are a whole set of different questions which I have no clue of. This is just my speculative answer for your question - I could be wrong 😊

Anyone has their own opinion. If bhakti is the basis, then one could have it done as a poetry recital. A musician when trying to imitate Thyagaraja's bhakti is doing a disservice as that cannot and should not be imitated. Afterall, imitations are always imitations.
The private opinions of artists should not be the basis of judging them. They have to be judged solely by the standard of their art and nothing else.
Compartmentalisation is the quality of lesser beings.

    Hello All.
If we were to accept Mr. Murali's stance that the award is solely on the basis of musical prowess then it does injustice to the the other awardees because the award itself draws it's reputation from the people who have accepted it in the past. What a person embodies is much more than the ability to flex the vocal cords and recite ragas, as challenging as that might be.

It's because most non-brahmins don't want to learn carnatic music since there is no money in it but will simply keep blaming the brahmins of discrimination. Just like how they blame the priests and practicing vedic brahmins of discrimination. Truth is nobody really wants to have those jobs because there is no money in it. Their priorities are different. The mentality of pursuing something with no tangible benefits lies in different fields for different people. This is just brought up as an argument for debates only. For most Tamil Brahmins learning carnatic music is akin to practicing their religion and hence will pursue/listen/promote it at all costs. There are so many such art forms from our past that are dominated by certain communities; why isn't that perceived as discrimination against others?
