Yep skiing and motorcycling have very similar attributes. You get dressed in warm clothing, get hot and sweaty, cold and freezing, be exhilarated by speed and at the end of the day have a few celebratory drinks to celebrate you weren’t injured in any way

Wales has to be one of the few places in the world that expect a parking ticket to be put on a motorcycle. It’s the same in Builth Wells, the wind just blows it off and the rain makes the ink run. Local councils couldn’t bear bikers somehow having some advantage!

So many great roads in Wales. We've found keeping away from some of the busy coastal tourist spots and doing central Wales gives us emptier roads.
If you are considering doing a Euro bike tour with Mrs Flyer, I can recommend basing yourselves in Bourg St Maurice France; every road out of there is amazing. The highest paved road in Europe the Col du Liseran is close by. You can ride up to Tignes, catch the funicular railway up to the glacier and have some summer skiing. Easily ride around mont Blanc in a day. Do the col du petite St Bernard while singing the theme to the Italian Job. We have extensive GPX routes 😉
Hope you do more tour vids. Cheers.

I live in the heart of the Colorado Rockies near 4 major ski areas. I ski every day in winter and think about riding my motorcycle. I ride almost every day in summer and think about skiing. If you think about it, turning on skis and turning on a motorcycle are very similar. Put the skis or tires on edge, lean to the inside and enjoy the G forces. Lots of UK skiers come to Colorado. We speak a version of English that they understand. A long trip so most stay 2 weeks and visit several areas.

I’ve written off going overseas (something I did fairly often) from Australia for many years to come. Just seems like such a hassle now. I was supposed to hire a Tiger 800 and do Wales last year. Anyway all the spare money has enabled me to buy two new bikes and discover my own country which I think everyone should do.
You are selling me on the GS idea for my next bike. They are popular for a reason.

Hi Andy - another nice one in the can. Last week I poked a bit of fun about u not having coinage. But I have got say u taught me something related to that. When I get back to my bike I’m always sure it will be there - but not so confident about the Parking ticket - so take a photo as proof - simple but effective - thanks for the tip. Down side of Wales - u get ur ticket nicked - up side - they have machines that take cards. Wow futuristic or what - do t think we have many of them in the highlands - “🥃”...

You can combine bike touring and skiing. Have been to many ski resorts on a bike and quite a few have a glacier for out of season skiing. Your riding gear can double up as ski gear (if it’s textile, most people don’t even notice) and you just rent the rest. You have to check your insurance though as you can find you’re not covered!

I used to love that type of touring. Age has forced me to give motorcycling away 🥴😖. When I did do rides like these it was on a Honda CB900F Hornet, then a Honda Silverwing 600 maxi scooter and lastly a Kawasaki VN900 Custom. The scooter was the best equipped for touring but a backpack was generally fine on the two motorcycles. My touring was all over New South Wales and Victoria (Australia). I find your references to time for a given distance strange. In Oz you can cover much greater distances much quicker. But I have holidayed in the UK and have been caught out under estimating the time it would take to get somewhere. Thanks for the great videos.

Another great vid. You really must (when things allow) get down to the Alps. Make sure you do the Stelvio Pass going UP the steeper side! I did it on my GS when I had it, some years ago along with many other Alpine and Dolomite passes. Just beware hordes of camper vans around the Italian Lakes! They are bigger than white vans so are not easy to overtake on the narrow, twisty, and crowded roads and go a lot slower!
Morocco is a great place to ride, too. Take the ferry to Santander, ride down through Spain (3 days), across to N Africa, and down through Fez to the Sahara, back up to the Med via the Atlas Mountains and Marrakesh. I cheated on that tour letting BMW Tours take the strain! All I had to do was ride!

Lime crab New quay is great - but Harbour Master Aberaeron hard to beat. Hotels - try the Gwesty Richmond on Aberystwyth sea front - if you get a sea view you can watch the bikes coming and going on the prom ( more TMF than Wildbad 😁)

Agree with you, apart from I’m a snowboarder, but still get the same feeling of carving down the slopes, also don’t discount Scotland for skiing..👍also I use the cloth bag that you get with the helmet to use a over shoulder bag.

A note on the skiing, why don't you try Scotland, there are a few good ski centres up there and if you take your plane I'm sure the Queen will let you park it on the lawn at Balmoral!! then its only a couple of miles to Glenshee or The Lecth ski centres. cheers.

Nice to see you having a good time riding in Wales, some great roads and awesome scenery, when the weather is reasonable it's a fabulous place to be. Fair play to you using a car park in New Quay, I'd have found a secluded FOC bike sized spot down in the harbour. Surely you could leave your helmet in the top box or take your empty panniers with you for the day out allowing you to loose the jacket, helmet and gloves as a minimum. That's what I tend to do with my GS and the vario luggage is great for swallowing boots and leathers when parked which means you can slip into those fashionable shorts and flip flops that you must have packed when heading to the west Wales coast🤔🌞😉👍👍

The thieves can be inside any top case or panniers in a few seconds ,you would be just leaving them the gear to ride away our bike with .You can bet the car park attendant won’t have seen them doing it .

    • @edxr250r
      @edxr250r 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess in the same way that thieves can take your bike in seconds but we leave our bikes unattended. The comment suggests that you would need to remove all luggage when parking your bike as theives (if present) assume that there's something in your hard luggage and open it to see what they can steal? I fail to see the point of having lockable luggage if we feel we can't leave anything in panniers/top boxes for fear of them being broken into when unattended. For reference I have the standard BMW vario luggage and always use them to store my gear in when parking the bike in public and haven't had any issue to date. I'm not suggesting leaving all the luggage on overnight outside a hotel etc but I don't think I've ever removed my top box in the ten years I've had the bike regardless of where I've parked it. 🤔🤔

@@edxr250r I would only ever leave swag that I wouldn’t miss that much if it went missing I certainly wouldn’t leave £700 helmet & a few grands worth of motorcycle clothing & cameras .I would only leave it in if I could see my bike from a cafe window or such like .The vagabonds see you putting gear in your top cases & panniers ,they have it in seconds .I also chain my bike to something solid & also use a second lock on disc to slow them down ,They will usually move on to an easier target ,unless you happen to have a high end bike that are stolen to order ,loaded into a container & in a foreign country in a day or two .Hence why I only purchase sensible everyday bikes that are not on the professional criminals radar ..

Great video Andy. Literally just back from Simon's 3 day high mile Wales tour. I also travelled from the Thames valley....early start on day 1 to pick the day 1 route up south of Monmouth then followed the route as per book....definitely think north Wales had the quieter roads. Loved the ponderosa cafe stop....ride safe 👍🇬🇧....ps, give myrouteapp a try, base camp is awful

Hi Mr Flyer. You love your GS I know, but it’s now a few models out of date and I suspect you’ll be possibly looking to trade her for a newer model. May I suggest since you haven’t taken her off-road, and never take the adventure bikes you ride off road, you try an off road session, possibly the BMW one, or the Simon Pavey one. You never know, you may like it. Most of the rest of us do. Cheers man. Kev.NZ
