Did a course many years ago with a bloke who trained motorcycle police. Best money I ever spent, id been riding for two years and thought I knew it all, turned out I knew sweet bugger all!

I have the deepest respect for MC police all over the world! They know their roads, they know their bikes, and they are the most vulnerable when out and about on the roads. We are not always agreeing with each other on the suitable speeds on the roads, but they are decent people with a hard and dangerous workplace. Ordinary driving (in a car) beside a 24 meter truck with a disoriented driver navigating a map, drinking coffee, talking on a cellphone while steering with his knees is no way near fun, but sitting on a bike (500kg's) near a 60 ton truck under the same conditions: My hat's off to you!

I loved watching this. My partner and I have ridden the Horseshoe Pass and eaten lunch at the Ponderosa. Talked to friendly bikers and had an absolute blast on the North Wales roads. We’ve been lucky enough to bring our bikes from Australia to the U.K. and Europe several times. Let’s hope we can come over again soon. Traffic cops in the U.K. are very reasonable and much more likely to give the benefit of the doubt if you’re not riding like an absolute drop-kick. You can get a speeding ticket for 3km over the limit - on a country road! - in Australia. Love your videos! I watch them for the lovey scenery as well as the bikes. Cheers, Dave

Yep, but who hasn't been pulled over for doing just that? His road positioning is NOT according to the Highway Code. That is of course the excuse they use. If you watch two police bikers riding alone (not escorting anyone), the lead rider will Apex to obtain a clearer view around a left hander, then move back to the left on right handers. They tend to ride in tandem, with the lead rider generally keeping more to the left on straight sections to allow a clearer view of the road ahead for the one following - who has the option to stagger/Apex if necessary. Years ago North Wales police did me for a dark visor on a really bright scorching summer's day. Absolutely unnecessary, they were pulling every bike and looking for anything they could ticket, small plates, loud cans, coloured lights, fast blinking indicators. The copper that pulled me told me "It's because we don't want you in North Wales". Charming. Always avoided the place since.

No he wasn't. No he shouldn't. Cop was spending most of his time in: 1 & 3, whereas he should have been doing: 2-3, 3-2, 2-1, 1-2. As far as I could tell, Andy was riding correctly: 2-3, 3-2, 2-1, 1-2.

In an emergency he would have been on the opposite side of the road where safe, to see even further around left hand bends. It's perfectly legal to do as long as done safely, and of course you move back over as soon as you see oncoming traffic. Traffic and junctions would also impact the position he decides to use.
Halfdead Rider You should probably read @Moderate Fkr’s comment again more carefully. He’s correct. The 1-3 swapping is the issue. He was neglecting 2. Emergency riding doesn’t come into the question here.
Hi Andy, I'm an IAM Chief Observer and have been working with Greater Manchester Police delivering Bike Safe courses for years but I still get a bit nervous when I'm out riding with them. In my case it's usually because I know that I won't hear the last of it if I cock up! As for not showing a brake light "it just depends" (my favourite phrase) if you are in a responsive gear then you should be able to modulate your speed just using acceleration sense. As a rule of thumb consider a "responsive gear" to be one that puts you into the middle third of the available rev range i.e. if your red line is at 9k then ride in a gear that puts you in the 3k - 6k range. Only once you are cruising at a steady speed should you be clicking up into higher gears for economy. Too many riders ride in too high a gear, this means that they have to brake (or worse start down shifting) as they have no engine braking. The reason I said it just depends is because sometimes we actuate the brake light to give information even when we don't need to apply the brakes.

Really good to watch that police rider carving so smoothly through the corners using the outside of the bends to maximise his view - so controlled and straight out of road craft!
Feeling guilty - I had a brilliant day on a Bikesafe course with Staffordshire police and the guys were really good, I rode quite a bit with a cop behind me and it is a little strange but the cop was so nice that towards the end of the day I was over it. I have been riding all my life bar a gap when my kids were small and I really enjoyed the Bikesafe course and still learnt something.
That is a really excellent video which must have taken a fair bit of organising behind the scenes. Many thanks Andy. I have mates here in Aus who are police officers and they have mentioned the unofficial ‘attitude’ test they use when pulling people over. Basically, if you are polite and admit when you’re in the wrong, then they will go easy on you and the opposite applies when you’re not! These guys seem to have a similar manner about them. We should all bear in mind some of the awful scenes they have to attend to sometimes and , when you need their help, they are the men and women who step up. Congratulations for making the effort to help us all see that.
Good show with doing this mate. I’ve always admired police bikers and how they are so fast when they need to without seeming to do any effort at all. I have also been to the same roads and places you’ve been riding through so it’s a nice ride through memory lane. Looking forward to part two.

Going for physio tomorrow and hopefully given the clear to start riding again in a few more days. Doc says that the bones are in what they call the callus stage right now, to us it means that they’re still soft but can bear some load. Not everyone heals at the same rate of course but I’m close to five weeks now so it does look like I’m doing well. Again, thanks for asking!
I have had quite a few interactions with the Police over the years ranging from playing their teams in the snooker league to having a burglary at my place and witnessing several RTA's. I have always found them to be likeable guys who only get serious when the occasion demands. Great video Andy, looking forward to the sequel(s)?
I live in Derby and was up Cat & Fiddle this Sunday. The pub is reopen all. It was rammed this weekend. Nice to see cops pushing vehicles out of the way. See so many just leave a car blocking the road, even if there's a layby near.

10:47 the first element of the system that Police class 1 riders use (IPSGA) is “Information” there are 3 elements of Information, you Take, Use and Give Information, police riders therefore tend to show brake light to vehicles behind them in order to Give the Information that they’re slowing, therefore your system of brake light judging riders shouldn’t apply to Owain in this case
Sort of mirrors my thoughts as I tend to "flash" my brake lights to the vehicle(s) behind when I think they should be made aware that I'm slowing even though my slowing is a result of engine braking. Always best to have everyone on the motorway aware of what each other is doing IMHO.
100% agree. Sadly too many on here are so busy virtue signalling their respect for the police - as if the cops are going to judge them or something. It's desperately immature. His job as lead rider is indeed to signal his change of speed. And yes, I have done this stuff, and at ridiculous speeds in a variety of situations, terrains and locations (including blackout night stuff that scares anyone every time), but I don't feel the need to share details. Excessive compliance is a bigger problem than policy infringement right now, and we are paying the price big time. These are the same guys that were telling people to go home a few months ago - lest we should forget.

Great video, very interesting topic. You need to update to a more recent version of Road Craft and should take a bit of training with IAM Roadsmart/ROSPA perhaps, that would be a very interesting series of videos :-)
I work with and around the police regularly. You get over the feeling you've done something wrong pretty quick when everyone has a purpose for being where they are. Unfortunately, I live in the US and we get a mixed bag of good and bad officers. It doesn't take long to figure out which one you're working with in any situation. A couple of them I just pack up and move along because they aren't worth wasting time trying to get what I need out of them. Others will bend over backward to be helpful, they are a real pleasure to be on the side of the road with things go sideways on you.
Great to see familiar Welsh roads again. Recognised many of them. Noticed the wet roads, shower clouds and sunny bits - typical! I'm itching to get back there one day if and when we can get this bug under control and we are allowed to fly again. Thanks.

Good video. I've noticed your riding positioning which is really amplified with the chap ahead of you. You said you've got the road craft handbook but sadly not implementing it in your riding. It's hard to make it second nature but when you do it definitely helps keep you safe and your visibility is so much better👍
Yup . Position the bike for the best view forward where at all possible . Usually that will also make you more visible to drivers behind , ahead and toward you too . The absolute center of the road may have more gravel , rubber and other slippery stuff , so beware of that and side roads , gates and diesel spills ! All this type of advice could be seen as boring old fart stuff , but I find pleasure and fun in trying to maximise my safety and to be honest you will go further faster using these techniques . If you think about it positioning techniques , for cars as well as bikes , on the road are not far removed from race track techniques most of the time .... all be it at lesser speed and the guarantee that no vehicles are coming at you !
That’s my neck of the woods . Question what time do they go home home ha . I agree with filtering mostly towards road works just keep in mind when the lights turn green and your still filtering the cars pull away to the right round the cones .
We had six police bikes in training following us one day. Was nervous the whole time and always checking my speed. Crazy I could tell they werein training and not interested in us.😎👍this is good stuff, the police need our support right now!

I live in N Wales now, I retired here, so welcome! Good vid Andy, it's good to humanise the Police, most of them are just doing their job, it's a public service and I get that because I was a Nurse all my working life, regularly dealt with the Police too in that role. Had my run ins with them on my bikes when I was younger, I felt hard done by at the time but looking back I was an idiot, got banned for it too, wiser and older now I tend not to attract their attention too much, mainly because I am no longer the idiot I was! Looking forward to part 2.
I have absolutely loved this , interesting you mention Lee not braking much by looking so far ahead , as a driving instructor I was also trained by ex police officers, we often did challenges against other trainees on who could brake the least over a 20 min period. Wales has stunning biker roads , lived on the border of Wales for many years before moving down south . Those officers are top guys , and that what very interesting in why they pull groups and making sure the inexperienced are aware of the dangers . Many years ago I was a member of SAM (Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists) and we often went on breakfast runs as guests of local dealerships. One particular Sunday we were under the wing of Lings Honda in Norwich and we took out around 12 of their bikes. I’m ashamed to say that whilst riding a Blackbird I was following someone who was going faster and faster and I tried to keep up with him (it was quite early on Sunday with no other traffic around.) On a straight piece of dual carriageway I glanced at my speedo which read 168mph! I also learned later that the guy I was following was an of duty policeman. They like a good scratch like any other bikers.
If the road conditions weren’t as they were, I wouldn’t ride that way. I think I was just caught up in the moment. You know what it’s like, an empty straight dual carriageway, the smell of bacon butties beckoning you and it’s not your bike. Nevertheless it was pretty reckless and not our usual style of riding, especially considering everyone was an advanced rider. Shame on me. 🤦🏼
Great video of my old home town. Left over 30 years ago and still recognise the roads. I don't know about motor bikes up the Horse Shoe Pass, I used to cycle it on my bike.
I remember a time when the Pondarosa was a little green wooden hut, which might have had just three muddy boot walkers in for lunch. It has become a mecca for bikes, now that Mr Clemmance has improved the buildings. Last year I climbed the Horseshoe on a 1926 350 Humber, it was down to first gear on the steepest parts...!

Hi I’m now 75+ and only drive occasionally not ride. I used to have a Roadcraft manual given to me by a friend who was a police officer. I now can’t find it and in any case it’s almost certainly been updated. Can you give a link to get an up to date copy for car drivers please.

Feeling guilty - I had a brilliant day on a Bikesafe course with Staffordshire police and the guys were really good, I rode quite a bit with a cop behind me and it is a little strange but the cop was so nice that towards the end of the day I was over it. I have been riding all my life bar a gap when my kids were small and I really enjoyed the Bikesafe course and still learnt something.
Yes I did BikeSafe with the Met police - great fun....

That is a really excellent video which must have taken a fair bit of organising behind the scenes. Many thanks Andy. I have mates here in Aus who are police officers and they have mentioned the unofficial ‘attitude’ test they use when pulling people over. Basically, if you are polite and admit when you’re in the wrong, then they will go easy on you and the opposite applies when you’re not! These guys seem to have a similar manner about them. We should all bear in mind some of the awful scenes they have to attend to sometimes and , when you need their help, they are the men and women who step up. Congratulations for making the effort to help us all see that.

Good show with doing this mate. I’ve always admired police bikers and how they are so fast when they need to without seeming to do any effort at all. I have also been to the same roads and places you’ve been riding through so it’s a nice ride through memory lane. Looking forward to part two.

Going for physio tomorrow and hopefully given the clear to start riding again in a few more days. Doc says that the bones are in what they call the callus stage right now, to us it means that they’re still soft but can bear some load. Not everyone heals at the same rate of course but I’m close to five weeks now so it does look like I’m doing well. Again, thanks for asking!

I have had quite a few interactions with the Police over the years ranging from playing their teams in the snooker league to having a burglary at my place and witnessing several RTA's. I have always found them to be likeable guys who only get serious when the occasion demands. Great video Andy, looking forward to the sequel(s)?

Nice to see cops pushing vehicles out of the way. See so many just leave a car blocking the road, even if there's a layby near.

10:47 the first element of the system that Police class 1 riders use (IPSGA) is “Information” there are 3 elements of Information, you Take, Use and Give Information, police riders therefore tend to show brake light to vehicles behind them in order to Give the Information that they’re slowing, therefore your system of brake light judging riders shouldn’t apply to Owain in this case
Sort of mirrors my thoughts as I tend to "flash" my brake lights to the vehicle(s) behind when I think they should be made aware that I'm slowing even though my slowing is a result of engine braking. Always best to have everyone on the motorway aware of what each other is doing IMHO.
100% agree. Sadly too many on here are so busy virtue signalling their respect for the police - as if the cops are going to judge them or something. It's desperately immature. His job as lead rider is indeed to signal his change of speed. And yes, I have done this stuff, and at ridiculous speeds in a variety of situations, terrains and locations (including blackout night stuff that scares anyone every time), but I don't feel the need to share details. Excessive compliance is a bigger problem than policy infringement right now, and we are paying the price big time. These are the same guys that were telling people to go home a few months ago - lest we should forget.

I work with and around the police regularly. You get over the feeling you've done something wrong pretty quick when everyone has a purpose for being where they are. Unfortunately, I live in the US and we get a mixed bag of good and bad officers. It doesn't take long to figure out which one you're working with in any situation. A couple of them I just pack up and move along because they aren't worth wasting time trying to get what I need out of them. Others will bend over backward to be helpful, they are a real pleasure to be on the side of the road with things go sideways on you.

@@TheMissendenFlyer It's the place that I found a love for motorbikes when in the seventies I could no longer afford the petrol and rust repairs to run a car. Bought a little Honda bike. She did 70mpg, sailed up hills, didn't complain and I got wet. All the time. But once hooked...

Good video. I've noticed your riding positioning which is really amplified with the chap ahead of you. You said you've got the road craft handbook but sadly not implementing it in your riding. It's hard to make it second nature but when you do it definitely helps keep you safe and your visibility is so much better👍

Yup . Position the bike for the best view forward where at all possible . Usually that will also make you more visible to drivers behind , ahead and toward you too . The absolute center of the road may have more gravel , rubber and other slippery stuff , so beware of that and side roads , gates and diesel spills ! All this type of advice could be seen as boring old fart stuff , but I find pleasure and fun in trying to maximise my safety and to be honest you will go further faster using these techniques . If you think about it positioning techniques , for cars as well as bikes , on the road are not far removed from race track techniques most of the time .... all be it at lesser speed and the guarantee that no vehicles are coming at you !

We had six police bikes in training following us one day. Was nervous the whole time and always checking my speed. Crazy I could tell they werein training and not interested in us.😎👍this is good stuff, the police need our support right now!

I live in N Wales now, I retired here, so welcome! Good vid Andy, it's good to humanise the Police, most of them are just doing their job, it's a public service and I get that because I was a Nurse all my working life, regularly dealt with the Police too in that role. Had my run ins with them on my bikes when I was younger, I felt hard done by at the time but looking back I was an idiot, got banned for it too, wiser and older now I tend not to attract their attention too much, mainly because I am no longer the idiot I was! Looking forward to part 2.

I have absolutely loved this , interesting you mention Lee not braking much by looking so far ahead , as a driving instructor I was also trained by ex police officers, we often did challenges against other trainees on who could brake the least over a 20 min period. Wales has stunning biker roads , lived on the border of Wales for many years before moving down south . Those officers are top guys , and that what very interesting in why they pull groups and making sure the inexperienced are aware of the dangers . Many years ago I was a member of SAM (Suffolk Advanced Motorcyclists) and we often went on breakfast runs as guests of local dealerships. One particular Sunday we were under the wing of Lings Honda in Norwich and we took out around 12 of their bikes. I’m ashamed to say that whilst riding a Blackbird I was following someone who was going faster and faster and I tried to keep up with him (it was quite early on Sunday with no other traffic around.) On a straight piece of dual carriageway I glanced at my speedo which read 168mph! I also learned later that the guy I was following was an of duty policeman. They like a good scratch like any other bikers.
To my mind that's just reckless on the road - regardless of who they are....

If the road conditions weren’t as they were, I wouldn’t ride that way. I think I was just caught up in the moment. You know what it’s like, an empty straight dual carriageway, the smell of bacon butties beckoning you and it’s not your bike.
Nevertheless it was pretty reckless and not our usual style of riding, especially considering everyone was an advanced rider. Shame on me. 🤦🏼

Great video of my old home town. Left over 30 years ago and still recognise the roads. I don't know about motor bikes up the Horse Shoe Pass, I used to cycle it on my bike.

I remember a time when the Pondarosa was a little green wooden hut, which might have had just three muddy boot walkers in for lunch. It has become a mecca for bikes, now that Mr Clemmance has improved the buildings. Last year I climbed the Horseshoe on a 1926 350 Humber, it was down to first gear on the steepest parts...!

North Wales Police (my local force) in this instance have done a great job of 'hearts and minds' or breaking down barriers that their long previous 'idiot' of a Chief Constable 'Richard Brunstrum' put up in the first decade of this century. May the modern constabulary, long be allowed to police with discretion when applicable, and remain approachable to a grateful public. P.S. I’m now 75+ and only drive occasionally not ride. I used to have a Roadcraft manual given to me by a friend who was a police officer. I now can’t find it and in any case it’s almost certainly been updated. Can you give a link to get an up to date copy for car drivers please.
