This might be the worst MacBook I've ever bought...

  • After years of being very meticulous and getting very lucky buying cheap used Macs, I've finally struck out! This one is probably the worst MacBook ever, a truly terrible Mac that sucks in basically every way. Today I'll walk you through why the 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro, and this cheap MacBook in particular, are absolutely abysmal.

      Though the worst ever is stuff paired to logic boards like Touch ID.
      And... M1 Macs fully disabling themselves if the SSD dies.

      I admire them in a weird way because I think this era of the Mac was the wake up call for Apple to abandon Intel since the balance between design and performance was no longer there like it was in the Unibody laptop era. The M1 Macbook Air and Pro are an amazing statement to end that era of design- as those designs used to constrain the usability, but Apple Silicon finally unleashed the performance users always wanted. Plus we still got good stuff out of this era like the amazing trackpad, touch bar if you were into that, and the improvement in USB C connectivity across the board.

    • @tbirdparis
      @tbirdparis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to think that too. Till I was forced to use one and had such a nightmare of an experience that they actually look ugly to me now. In fact, I'm even turned off the look of Space Grey entirely, because it reminds me of that era of awful machines...

    • @Zebra_Paw
      @Zebra_Paw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thin usually means it's garbage. There is no way they fit proper cooling or even hardware. And yes, for your 1000+ dollars, you got an i5 6360U, which unsurprisingly gets outperformed by a 2009 Core 2 Quad that's worth less than 10 bucks today, and this will cook itself because of the horrible cooling combined with a stupid fan curve.
      You get 8GB of DDR3 memory... yes, DDR3... in 2016, and that is soldered! You get that horrible keyboard, which even if it was reliable would still be horrible, and... you get a proprietary SSD, and it's only replaceable on the model without the Touch Bar... on the other one the SSD can't be replaced... and the Touch ID is paired to the logic board, so you can't swap it.
      The prices for more RAM or storage are also a blatant scam!
      Even if this was 100 dollars today, I would not buy it!

The battery lasted 2 hours at best, it would freeze with just microsoft word open, zoom and other similar applications would constantly crash (which wasn't great for online school), and it would become so hot it could double up as a hot water bottle! My M1 MBP is still, a year later, miles better than my 2017 MBP ever was. The battery could be the issue for it crashing as I've had a couple macbooks that have done this. This was fixed with a new battery and also with 2016 and 2017 screens, I believe they made the screen cable that's connected to the board slightly too short, subsequently they stretch and break and I've had quite a few macbooks with this issue also.

    I have a 2016, and I would love to pawn it off on someone but I have had to have the Battery replaced from swelling, the butterfly keyboard replaced as well. The battery lasts 5 hrs and It randomly shuts off once a week. With Covid I never take it anywhere, its docked 99% of the time. If I could sell it for a decent amount for a better machine I would.

    I have the 15inch version .. same "orange splotchy LCD" issue. From everything I've researched,.. that orange splotchyness happens when pressure is applied to the screen. Happens to me because I keep it in a Backpack with other things pressing up against it. If I take it out to use it,. after an hour or so the blotchyness goes away as the screen warms up and works great.

    Put the logic Board in the oven for some time - maybe there are some broken solder joints which only disturbing the device when the device is running or so. I don't know. ;) Or maybe the cooling is damaged so that it is running to hot and throtteling.

    Sound like the kernel is corrupted or one of capacitors on the board is about to go out for good. I would format the computer completely and do a fresh internet recovery. If that doesn’t fix most of the issue it is a capacitor that is about to go out.
    Some of the issues you are explaining is because I did an Internet Recovery on a slow internet connection. Which in turn corrupted the kernel. I was about to sell my computer, before I figured it out. I had these issue on a 2020 MacBook Pro

  • @theonetodiffer7945
    @theonetodiffer7945 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    it may be because of some faulty component, especially power section. may be a bad soldered capacitor or a bad resistor whose value vary. if this laptops logic board is of no use, try hot airing the power section with some flux applied. clean afterwards with CTC and try again. this may or may not fix the issue. atleast it's worth a try.

    I recently got rid of my 2017 13” Macbook Pro for the 2015 15” Pro. Such a difference! The 2017 one would sound like a jet engine even from just opening Spotify, the keyboard was an absolute mess with keys sticking down on the daily. Obviously with the 15” now being seven years old, it’s not the fastest thing in the world but man is far, far more reliable than the 2017 one. Hoping to get through university with this one and then maybe I’ll look into getting a Mac with Apple silicon…

    so I have a 2017 15inch MacBook Pro. I have had repaired it like 4-5 times. and 4 times out of it it was in the first year of use. The repair included full replacement of top case part of the body - including keyboard, speakers, unibody and all other things. The first thing was died left speaker. Then right speaker, then keyboard and then keyboard again. This is just 1st year. And this is just a Touch Bar model. As far as I knew at this point the models without touch bar were much more stable in that areas and many my friends didnt have any problems.

    I still have and love my 2015 13" MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM/256GB SSD/512GB MicroSD Card. It's an i5 and it's not a custom build. I bought it from Apple directly 1 day before they ceased sale of them upon releasing the Touch Bar MacBook Pro. I read some horror stories then and certainly couldn't forego my USB-A ports for 4x USB-C. The Mac to this day works flawlessly, never have any system issues, battery is still awesome. The Mac is running on Catalina. I'm not going any higher. This software version may not be 100% perfect but I don't like the look of Big Sur or Monterey. The best MacOS IMO would be Snow Leopard. As for iPhones. I have pretty much every model from the 3GS and above. I have stopped at iPhone SE 2nd Gen. I am satisfied with it and it's Dual Line capabilities, battery life is good, camera does the job. Not interested in getting a phone that costs the same price as a computer!

    I've got that one, it was my daily driver and its really poor, to the point I actually wish I kept my original MBP. It kernel panics all the Time(yes I have wiped it and still kernel panics) and craps out if the thing even thinks about doing anything remotely taxing. The only redeeming feature was that I could upgrade the ssd from 128gb to 256gb. Thats why I've went M1 iPad Pro and away to buy a M1 mini for my video editing/music production.
