It's like the old funny story: old woman comes to the repair service showing them a macintosh with a shotgun hole in the display. "Can you fix this" - she asks. "Are you in your mind? It's completely dead" - they said. She blamed them for being unprofessional and went to competitors service. After few weeks she came back and showed fully functioning macintosh triumphantly. Guys from the service were defeated but also curious. They went to competitors, bought a pack of beer and asked them how did they do that. They said that the only thing not affected bu the shot was HDD, so they bought a new macintosh, swapped the hard drive and charged this old lady with +10% price of the new mac.

The ssd isn't soldered although it does have a proprietary connector and size. That's what that steel block plugged into the bottom left edge of the logic board is.
Total cost to replace the parts, effort and time equals to a new macbook pro. The logic board for 2017 (A1707) costs around US$800+ alone and not withstanding shipping.
@@johnplante5602I bought a 2017 Macbook Pro 13' 512gb Touch Bar Model for 700€ (760$) last month. I'm sure that you can find pretty good deals if you search enough. I had a lot of luck because, especially here in Italy, MacBook tend to keep their value for a long time.
My 2017 MacBook Pro (same specs) didn't qualify for the free top case replacement because of the damage to the Thunderbolt 3 port area. So I had to either buy a new or refurbished machine or pay the $768 charge for the repair. Had I bought a new one I'd have chosen to get it with 16 GB RAM. I've only had it for two years & the repair cost was less than ⅓ the cost of a new device, so I had the repair done.
Great find! But honestly iFixIt is over charging you really badly. On taobao you can get the 2017 MBP screen for about $300 USD, even if you are paying $100 for sensitive shipping, that would cost you about $400 maximum, so iFixIt is taking in about $200 profit(prob even more as i only took 5 minute to find it). This coulda been at even danker laptop at $420 if the screen is self sourced, nonetheless great video!
I see, completely forgotten about that. If thats the case let my comment be a gross estimation of ifixit's profit margin on the monitor replacement, though i suspect it will probably be higher due to having better mass purchase deals and shipping channels.
I bought a High spec. well-used, out of warranty, Touch Bar 2016 MBP 15” with sticking keys from ebay. My Apple service centre quickly replaced the entire top plate and battery for free, under the keyboard recall. Credit where credit is due,.. although payback for making the keyboard unrepairable, and being hit with a class-action lawsuit you have to think
Yeah that’s unheard of. Apples usual stance is if there’s any other damage you have to pay to fix it first before they repair anything. I think he just got lucky or has some pull with with Apple. Cause I regular consumer couldn’t pull this off.
Five the screen yourself, backing silver filament, wit new glass, utilize gloves, and be gentle in placement may us tiny small white tape, lay lcd cover on its back, use 6mm double sided clear tape to seal once all is aligned!
I've had my 2013 MacBook Air for ages now, used it everyday, has 1,300 charge cycles at 80% capacity, and no issues with the ssd. So, yeah I'm not really concerned by soldered SSDs as by the time the SSD dies the rest of the computer would've been obsolete anyway.
Yep, still using my 2012 macbook air daily for work. Nothing has been replaced. I only get about an hour out of the battery when not plugged in but I only work at home or at the office, so I always have the charger anyway. But the RAM and SSD still work fine.
Trevor you can get an iPhone 6 easily for under $80. It considering he buys phones in bulk it probably didn't even cost that much. Biggest reason we he got it cheap is a screen cost over $400
@@animedrawer69 I know lol but it was a refurbished iPhone 6s they sell for like 150 still so even if it didn't cost him 150 it still held that value thus he didn't get the MacBook for 20 but for 20 something worth 150 still an amazing deal but it's way more than 20.
I don't get it. I need a follow-up clarification video. What is the "top case" you are referring to? Why did they replace the main logic board free of charge??
I agree with you. I could’ve gone to the Apple store and said “Hi, my keyboard is broken” Apple store says “your display is also broken” I say “I use an external monitor” Apple basically gives me a new top case and if some internal part doesn’t work it was on their end. Then all I have to do is find out how to get the display. To be honest it’s be worth even more than $20 if someone wants to use it as an ornament.
Everyone's situation isn't the same, he said at the beginning the guy had two and just needed a phone in exchange for it, also Hugh still had to dish out hundreds to get the computer working again, don't be so quick to judge people based on your situation.
@@FreshtexBlackman Lol chill my dude "judging people based on my situation", logic boards for that model alone go for north of $400 on eBay vs $100 for an iPhone 6S? If the guy knows enough about taking them apart to be able to swap the screens and top cases then it really would've paid much more to just part the spare one out and buy a phone
Freshtex Blackman he never said he gave him a phone. He said he used the computer for parts because he didn’t have the money to fix it. He still could have sold it for more.
I thought Apple would not do "partial repairs" on their products? I do not have an Apple but I've seen videos and webpages claiming that. I remember seeing a video of a guy who just wanted the logic board replaced but Apple refused as the monitor frame was a bit cracked (but monitor working perfectly) and they were "either we fix everything or nothing".

keyboard controller is located onto the trackpad. you didn't check the possible liquid damage of the trackpad logic board. just few screws. it's a pitty.
Buy the mid 2012 model. Its almost a decade old but its chief virtue is you can repair and upgrade it! Everyone else on here will give you the same advice.
Telling you guys, don't sleep on the keyboard replacement program while its still here. I picked up a 15' 2016 touch bar mbp for $800 on ebay and got it replaced for free.Looks brand new.
I am watching this as I bought one for $200. The screen is cracked but it works perfectly with an external monitor. I am just seeing how expensive and difficult screen replacement would be. Mine is a 15 inch laptop and $600 or more is not viable. I will look for one that has a good screen but the logic board or hard rive are dead for a cheap price. If not, I will use it as a desktop and pair it with one of my 27 inch thunderbolt displays.
Dear Hugh Jeffreys, what is the difference between a laptop and a notebook. The last one has no numerique possibility at the right side for special signs I guess, do you agree ? Kind regards !
If Apple took as much time, resources, and devotion that they put into making their laptops impossible to repair, and put that devotion towards making a laptop that actually functions properly, they’d be unstoppable!
Its a bullshit video. You believe send a MacBook with a broken display, space gray lid, and silver body and expect them to *only* replace the logic board for *free*? If you sent that to Apple they would make you pay to replace the whole case and the broken display. They'd never ship back a partially functioning laptop.
I'm not sure I would put 600 into a 2017 model. Its going to have repeated keyboard failure and the replacement program isn't going to last forever. You could get a 2015 15 inch for around the same money and have more power and bulletproof reliability
Nicholas Ramirez Whyso? 2015 to 2017 use the exact same chipset together. Even watch Luke Miani’s video. He says these Macbook Airs are great especially for school. I recommended that year instead of the rest since I think it’s the sweet spot.
Hugh Jeffereys: A guy who buys dead laptops and then "fixes" them by replacing all broken parts which cost him just about the same as a working unit would. Tell me. Do you upsell your buyers??
nice sharing! you managed to get a Macbook Pro for as less as 600 dollars. I think that's how the resellers can turn a 2nd/broken device and sell it at a relatively new price :DDD
So this mac cost $1419 plus the used iPhone 6s. $700 invoice which they initially get and later settled. $699 screen & $20 & iPhone 6s. Just for the record though even Chinese electronic companies don't replace/give service the modified machines. Only the authorized service center guy can open the machine If you want a warranty. They put stickers on the screws. AND Chinese companies' policies are definitely more lenient as compare to US Companies and among the US tech Companies apple is very strict with their policies as far as I know.
Yeah, I did not get as lucky with mine. I got the laptop for free but the screen was crack and the battery bulged. It ended up costing 350 for me to fix it myself, but not too bad. I use it pretty much every day now so definitely worth it

The ssd isn't soldered although it does have a proprietary connector and size. That's what that steel block plugged into the bottom left edge of the logic board is.
Remember When he used an Ariana Grande wallpaper on everything he repaired?
Total cost to replace the parts, effort and time equals to a new macbook pro. The logic board for 2017 (A1707) costs around US$800+ alone and not withstanding shipping.
for the same 600$ you ended up spending on repairing it you could've just bought the exact same MacBook Pro in working condition lol
not in australia
You can’t buy a good condition 2017 mbp for $600, that’s dumb talk
Jonathan Michaud you are wrong, if you search carefully you can. I bought this exact model for 600 a few weeks ago.
@@ivanvalenzuela7030 did it work? Or did you just see a listing online?
He got it for free, it is sponsored
I see, completely forgotten about that. If thats the case let my comment be a gross estimation of ifixit's profit margin on the monitor replacement, though i suspect it will probably be higher due to having better mass purchase deals and shipping channels.
@@lmchua8644 iFixit definitely overcharges.
Great but where's the $20 macbook? Is it in one of your other videos? Searched your channel but couldn't find it.
That's awesome mate very happy for you that you got this awesome deal. I've learnt a lot from your videos. Keep up the good work
I bought a High spec. well-used, out of warranty, Touch Bar 2016 MBP 15” with sticking keys from ebay. My Apple service centre quickly replaced the entire top plate and battery for free, under the keyboard recall. Credit where credit is due,.. although payback for making the keyboard unrepairable, and being hit with a class-action lawsuit you have to think
I can’t believe they warrantied it with the screen not even matching wow
Yeah that’s unheard of. Apples usual stance is if there’s any other damage you have to pay to fix it first before they repair anything. I think he just got lucky or has some pull with with Apple. Cause I regular consumer couldn’t pull this off.
Totally sounds like bull...
Five the screen yourself, backing silver filament, wit new glass, utilize gloves, and be gentle in placement may us tiny small white tape, lay lcd cover on its back, use 6mm double sided clear tape to seal once all is aligned!

Uh oh!
I have a kingdian S280 120GB ssd. Failed after 3 years. Is this normal? Supposed to happen? It's read only mode now.
I feel like the iphone 6 is kinda important in the price lmao
yeah clickbait af weak
@@Jack___13 yeah especially since even with the iphone it's still a really good price
Yes, huge clickbait, it's a shame because I like the channel!
Bruh whoever sold that to you is a proper fool
I agree with you. I could’ve gone to the Apple store and said “Hi, my keyboard is broken” Apple store says “your display is also broken” I say “I use an external monitor” Apple basically gives me a new top case and if some internal part doesn’t work it was on their end. Then all I have to do is find out how to get the display. To be honest it’s be worth even more than $20 if someone wants to use it as an ornament.
Yeah these usually sell for close to $800 AUD.
I don't if he really got this for $20.
A little sus.
GUYS I GOT AN AUDI R8 FOR 200$ !!!
BTW, I gave them my 200$ plus my Ferrari 360.
It may seem impossible now but in the future it will probably be affordable to unsolder the ssd and add in a new ssd chip and flash the security chip.
"can I resurrect it?" yes send it back to apple and let them change faulty parts
True
Yeah... *repairing* it.
Those phone work internationally. The Mackbook was work every penny it works as long as you buy a power adapter
This should be titles: "I got a MacBook Pro for 20$ and a iPhone 6s. I then had apple replace everything and replaced the screen. it costed 600$
Hallowed Acolyte then what’s the point of watching the video?
where is the closing quote 😳
Keyboard will stop functioning or one key press presses other keys if their is water leakage but I’m not sure if that also applies for the trackpad
Hi Hugh, i’d gladly buy this one from you of you wanna sell it! Hit me up if you want to. I’m from Belgium btw
Dat gaat hem niet worden. Ik denk niet dat hij die zomaar gaat verkopen hoor.
@fahad ullah ever heard of Dutch?
I hate Harry Kane een nee heb je, een ja kan je krijgen ;)
haha lol
Wil je mijn MacBook 2010 kopen?
still runs on the current macOS, that is the Monterey OS and the last upgrades which will be replacing for a new macOS , Mammoth OS by next year in 2022.
Fun drinking game every time he says “MacBook Pro” take a shot
keyboard controller is located onto the trackpad. you didn't check the possible liquid damage of the trackpad logic board. just few screws. it's a pitty.
Amazing, thank you a lot for all the information in this story
0:05 right off the bat i can tell that screen will not look good when it turns on
Lucky!! I'd love to get my hands on a cheap MacBook pro!
I mean it wasn't so cheap by the time he finished. It was like $600 in parts lol
@@DarkPlaysThings But still he only paid upfront $20. I keep looking online and I see similar shape macs going for $300+
Buy the mid 2012 model.
This would be cool as a makeshift iMac.
Really enjoyed seeing this mac come to life great job on repairing it
"this mac"? the entire machine got replaced! - top, bottom, inside and screen. The old one is in the trash heap somewhere
If I saw that online, I just buyed an extra display what supports the MacBook and boom i got an iMac
I don't wanna start with the ship of Theseus but mate 😅
Hugh: tear open MacBook
Apple: You still have not voided your warranty
Its a bullshit video. You believe send a MacBook with a broken display, space gray lid, and silver body and expect them to *only* replace the logic board for *free*? If you sent that to Apple they would make you pay to replace the whole case and the broken display. They'd never ship back a partially functioning laptop.
1:08 its a note 7 NOTE 7 Run everyone!!!
great find for $20! great work as always
You could do a collaboration with Louis Rossmann to fix it. 😉

A MacBook Pro is my dream your so lucky hugh
You don't repair anything just only replace the screen, and Apple give You a new logic board. Louis rossmann really repair those laptops
I'm not sure I would put 600 into a 2017 model. Its going to have repeated keyboard failure and the replacement program isn't going to last forever. You could get a 2015 15 inch for around the same money and have more power and bulletproof reliability
I would Really love to get one of these just for school :DD
I recommend a MBA instead for school.
Bruh think more "School" get a cheapo 2011 Chromebook like all other schools.
Man, my old school was cool. They got us iPads.
Get a 2014 Macbook Air for school. Bargain Laptops if you need a Macbook, although, like King Dee said, a cheap chrome book will do you fine.
@@307skylake7 2014 is kinda old.... probably like a 2015 to 2017
Nicholas Ramirez Whyso? 2015 to 2017 use the exact same chipset together. Even watch Luke Miani’s video. He says these Macbook Airs are great especially for school. I recommended that year instead of the rest since I think it’s the sweet spot.
A bit like the broom my granddad left me. Still got it. Replaced the head 4 times and the handle twice. Stuff back then was built to last....
469.99 for the screen replacement ouch
declan snow he got it for free since the video was sponsored by ifixit
@@salehmalik1582 still, anyone who wanted to do this themselves would have to pay that which is a pretty absurd price for a screen

Imagine if we have a Louis Rossmann crossover with a MacBook Pro repair like this one.
That was awesome…. Hugh, thanks once again for the video
AND Chinese companies' policies are definitely more lenient as compare to US Companies and among the US tech Companies apple is very strict with their policies as far as I know.
something free from Apple? I don't think I'm in the right reality.
If you have a broom and you replace the bar, and later you replace the head, is it still the same broom?
HOW TF YOU GET A 2017 MACBOOK PRO FOR $20 😭😭😭😭😭
Because the title is clickbait and it cost $20 and a refurbished iPhone 6S

Yeah, I did not get as lucky with mine. I got the laptop for free but the screen was crack and the battery bulged. It ended up costing 350 for me to fix it myself, but not too bad. I use it pretty much every day now so definitely worth it
Can u repair my life tooo...it is sort of broken too😭😂
In India it Rs 42000/- which is aroud 600$ for the mbp 2017 model screen which I got replaced....

“Can I resurrect this $20 MacBook Pro”
Is that even a question at this point
This video was a shame for me to watch. You are misleading Apple, got parts for free and not repair anything, but only replace a screen. Can not believe you uploaded this...
Whats wrong with it? Apple is a scam by itself, so shut the hell up. They build their products in a really inefficient way to push up the repair costs and make them wear or break faster.
@@phimtown Why is Apple a scam? It's your own decision to choose for Apple products. You are not forced to buy this.
