It's also schtick, same as Mad Dog, but it doesn't feel the same.
Bird was a beast. A scenario always forgotten is one of sports greatest tragedies happening during Birds final years - we never got a chance to see him play along side Len Bias. If Bias didn’t die on his draft night and suited up for the Celtics, there is no telling how long that dynasty would have lasted. Certainly Bird could have extended his career and changed his game to be a “high volume” 3 ball shooter that JJ mentioned. But he never had that luxury and spent much of his final years dealing with the Bad Boys in the paint.
If Bird played today he would be one of the best if not the best 3 point shooter in the NBA. I love how we want to separate eras when it comes to comparing stats and defense but somehow era doesn't matter when it comes to shooting. JJ is silly, Bird is absolutely a top 5 shooter even though he doesn't have top 5 attempts and makes.
Yes, you're completely right. Mad Dog didn't articulate it very well, but the very fact that Larry wasn't a volume 3-point shooter and then could hit crucial 3s when required actually says more about his 3 point shooting than if you'd fired up 10 already in the game. And JJ's comment insinuating that his era was more physical than the 80s/90s is so utterly ridiculous - JJ wouldn't have survived in the league back then.
Because he wasn't the greatest shooter ever. He wasn't good enough to change the way the game was played from the 3. Doesn't mean he isn't a great shooter.

And people who watched both, in real time, noticed the changes too. There is NO such thing as an enforcer today. It is a fact that the role existed for sure until 15-20 years ago. Steph got me to start watching the NBA after 21 years of never caring. I've always watched football, but Mahomes made me a Chiefs fan (unless they're playing the Steelers). When Mahomes is on the field, you literally cannot take your eyes off the screen -- he does things that nobody is supposed to do. He's a wizard with the ball. Steph is very similar to Mahomes in that respect. When he's on the court, you always gotta watch him because he might just make some ridiculous shot. That said, I think the amount of things that Mahomes just randomly does far exceeds what Steph does in terms of crazy highlight moments. This is a great segment, and if I had to answer, I would say Mahomes is more fun to watch, but Steph has clearly had a larger impact on his sport.
That's funny, I've been watching the NBA for a little over 20 years, never really cared about football and I don't even watch anymore, but I think next season I may watch some of the better teams/players because of all this talk
its steph...becuz he done it 1st out of the 2 and he's done it longer....and they both do a a large amount for their teams....Steph greatest ability is shooting but it's not this only...he's a great ball handler and passer and great in passing lanes defense..so they both have a crazy amount of highlights in different areas of their sport....but Steph has jus done it more and longer is the Only difference right now
I actually do think that Mad dog is right about Bird. Think about it this way... take all the great 3 point shooters now and place them in Birds era. How many of them would be as great a shot as bird? Outside of Steph, Klay and Reggie Miller, there's not too many. Bird was that dude. Edit: By 'placed in that era' I mean raised, taught and trained in that era. If you flipped it the other way and placed Bird in this era maybe he gets 6 MVPs instead.
Exactly, it really comes down to the way defense is allowed to be played. The 90s and earlier defenders always had a hand or arm resting on defenders. Now it is way easier to get a 3 pointer off. Just because people hit more threes now doesn't mean that they are better
Larry Bird would not be a better shooter than Ray Allen, Klay Thompson, Reggie or Dame....if they existed during that era, they would be considered shooting Gods. Lets have a reality check
@@wickedwood04 you're just repeating a bad argument that old heads make. JJ said it himself. People foul Steph Curry off ball all game long while in the 90s you literally didn't have to worry about that because jump shots weren't guarded like that.

@@jaggedarts33 I think that's the key differentiator.. Mad Dog plays the role with a wink, as does Stephen A for the most part, and it's done as entertainment. It rarely seems personal in terms individual players (Kyrie and Stephen A not withstanding). Skip on the other hand has made his TV career on very personal, and relentless, criticism of individual players (Aikman, LeBron, T.O., etc.). It's also schtick, same as Mad Dog, but it doesn't feel the same.
Yeah mad dog is necessary. Makes the debates engaging 😊
I can’t stand that mf
and JJ falls for it every single time
Bird was a beast.
Actually Bird told Bill Simmons on his podcast that he would have retired right away if Len Bias lived to play with the Celtics

Watch a game from the 90s it'll put u to sleep.. everybody posting up and watching, missing uncontested 3s and midranges, no crossover, less athletic players, less jelly layups.. playoffs is where there becomes more a balance now and 3point shooting is crucial to space and open up the floor

And people who watched both, in real time, noticed the changes too. There is NO such thing as an enforcer today. It is a fact that the role existed for sure until 15-20 years ago. @@gumballwaterson1957 what you’re saying is true if you’re only considering hard fouls = physicality. How about workload, possessions per game, pace of play, and overall level of strength and fitness among players? When looking at games from previous eras, there is much more standing and waiting around in todays game - which is way more active.

THANK U!!
Larry Bird would not be a better shooter than Ray Allen, Klay Thompson, Reggie or Dame....if they existed during that era, they would be considered shooting Gods. Lets have a reality check
