Recently, ESPN's JJ Redick made comments on Larry Bird & Steph Curry that had NBA legends and legacy fans up in arms- how dare this young mad take Larry Bird's name in vein?
What JJ said told Stephen A. Smith and Chris "Maddog" Russo, "When I watch, let’s say Steph Curry, for example," Redick continued, "When I watch Steph Curry off the ball in a playoff game getting grabbed and held by Marcus Smart, they’re attached to him at all times."
On the day of his retirement from the Boston Celtics, when asked by reporters, Bird replied that Michael Cooper of the Los Angeles Lakers' was his most formidable opponent. Larry Bird said, "The best defender I ever faced was definitely Michael Cooper."
    • Larry Bird & Michael C...
Considering Larry Bird's rare praise of an opponent, it's understandable that the always polite and mild mannered defensive legend, would take some offense to these thoughtless statements by Redick. "Coop" didn't just get pissed off but, after Dominque Wilkins of the Atlanta Hawks called JJ's statements to be "idiotic," Bob Ryan of Goodman Ryan Tanguay Podcast questioned Redick's basketball IQ, Nick Gelso, founder of CLNS, went on an extra-ordinary BoomerRANT, the 8x All-Defense and the league's original "3 and D" player felt VERY talkative on the matter.
Mad Dog & JJ Reddick. This is gonna be a classic 😭

Cooper was overseas when the ESPN aired the First Take segment and didn't even know what was said until he returned late on Friday, February 25th, 1 week after the original airing of the ESPN segment, he immediately reached out CLNS to get his thoughts on record.
Recorded and released on Sunday that weekend, Cooper, in very uncharicteristic fashion, ranted on about the defensive physicality of the 1980's, his experiences guarding Larry-Legend and he event went on to aim a harsh statement to Redick saying, "if you had played during the 80's I'd have locked you up!" among other remarks in defense of Bird and the 1980's players.
Throughout the epic 20 minute rant, the 1987 Defensive Player of the Year, cautioned fans and former players in the media from comparing decades, the 5x NBA champion said, "let's leave comparisons to the fans..."
In typical fashion, Coop issued JJ an apology at the very end of the episode.
Michael Cooper, a defensive "monster" on the court in his day and a retired gentleman in his post playing career.

They purposely don’t shoot or shoot after the buzzer at the end of quarters on full court or half court shots so it doesn’t effect their shooting % . Just like end of the game running out the clock when your not shooting but going to get a shot clock violation. They pass it to one of their teammates so they don’t get the turnover.

When he says he would shut down Reddick he has a career of performance, and rings, to back it up. That wasn't arrogance, that was confidence based on accomplisment. That gave me goosebumps when Coop taked about their immense respect they had for the Celtics, and the respect the Celtics had for the Lakers. You want to hear that as true, non-hating fan. I lived it and watched it, and I watched West, Goodrich and Chamberlain for the Lakers battle the Celtics Havilicek, Jo White and Cowens a decade earlier. Also Pipen had a bad bac,k and so on. But Bird didn't have the drive and will to overcome his injuries. But that was the style back then, not to crossover too much because of the dribbling restrictions that players today don't have to worry about! Why do athletes have to have some kind of loyalty just because a team drafted them? Imagine you were coming out of high school or college and there was a draft for everyone. You've shown some skill in mathematics and you're skills in customer service were noticed as you worked your campus job in the cafeteria. So early in the second round, you get drafted by Dairy Queen. Do you think you should have to work at Dairy Queen forever or would it be completely unreasonable to expect you to never take a better offer because you would be showing disloyalty to the customers?
Because that's what you're demanding of athletes. Don't like salaries, stop watching. If no one is giving their money to these teams, they will no longer be able to pay those salaries you're offended by (still not really a fair share of the ridiculous revenue these teams bring in as a result of those athletes).

As a said to JJ on his channel, not only were the 80s and 90s more physical, but back then if you took the ball down the lane there was a serious threat that you were either going to be challenged with extreme force at the rim or you would be deliberately fouled, with the worse outcome for the fouler being a personal foul, whereas now you can see defenders deciding not to challenge to offensive players for fear of being picking up flagrant fouls or being ejected. I have nothing against either of them, but there's no way in hell that Steph Curry or Trae Young are wandering down the lane and throwing up floaters in the 80s without being put on their asses every single time until they stop doing it. And to use Derozan as an example, just because he shouts 'AYE' and flicks his legs out and falls over, it doesn't automatically make it a foul in the 80s/90s.....in fact people will start standing right underneath you until you stop doing it.

Saying Larry Bird is one of the greatest 3 point shooters ever is laughable bullshit. Making fantasy hypotheticals as an argument. JJ Redick was a better shooter from 3 Point than Bird.

      They customize those things now
Steph won't be able to utilize his skills during Bird era, he will be called for CARRYING the ball, he we'll get hurt inside the pain, he'll get handchecked outside the perimeter and most IMPORTANTLY, he'll be BENCHED if he ever attempt those kind of 3s lol.
Steph would be a regular scorer especially in the 70s when there are NO 3point lines yet

Stop acting like the new era is easy just bc you have an opinion and bias. There’s a reason why Lebron and Curry are out of this world breeds of the nba… Curry is 6’3 and one of the greatest players to play. How lucky we were to have had the basketball intellect of the players during the Coop era. I'm a lifelong Celtics fan. I love Coop and adore Magic. That Lakers team with coach Riley was the original Dream Team. Dr. J, Mr. Abdul-Jabbar, and Mr. Russell, and the way they can explain the intricacies of this team sport is pure beauty. These aren't just smart basketball players. These are brilliant men. I can honestly say, I didn't even know of Redick until he swung open his fly trap about a great player like Larry Bird. The disrespect is shameful and completely unnecessary.

Loved this! Coop was fair but still Fire! JJ deserved this criticism. So glad to find this one! Great comment about the paint and Magic being so-so on one-on-one defense but a good double teamer. You see mediocre one-on-one defense players also check out on assisting on defense and that kills a team making a game closer than it should be.

NBA back then man. We had intense rivalries between Boston and the Lakers, but also Boston and Detroit. Then we got the Detroit and Chicago rivalry toward the back end. NBA hasn't had a rivalry that comes close since. Knicks and Bulls was too one sided. Bulls didn't just win the series against them, they usually did it without that much trouble. Knicks and Pacers was nice, but it really always seemed to end with Miller killing them, and the stakes weren't on the same level. I guess you could go Cleveland v GS, but that's just too manufactured for me. It wasn't about two teams that fought back and forth, it was about two teams that's went super team. The old rivalries were more organic. To use a music analogy, Lakers v Celtics, Celtics v Pistons and Pistons v Chicago were the Beatles. Organic beginnings. The Cavs v Warriors was the Monkees. Built by a record company.

In NBA saw him change hands on a jump shot from right to left and scored. The players in the 70’s and 80’s could play. JJ has no knowledge of pre 2000 basketball.
