👍, Just got an origin 50 and planning on doing your 800 mod with clipping. I’ve been constantly watching your and jays video trying to workout the ceramic disc placements. I think I’ve nilly got it, thanks for sharing your knowledge, true Aussie help everyone out and ask nothing in return
Fantastic vid as always Jason..Love the Foreigner 'Play out ' at the end.. Mick Jones (Foreigner) Holy Grail Marshall Crunch Tone has gotta be those Power Chords in "Juke Box Hero"...Your Amps will nail that tone for sure.
Jase, I'm going to start this mod soon on an origin 50. If I follow the tutorial on the 20 will that get me these same results? (Other than replacing the gain pot with the 4700 pf bright cap and other various other differences) Just looking for more description on how to wire up that 'new' pot and other various circuit changes in a nice easy to follow tutorial.
I started to get frustrated with my origin 50. And yesterday had a breakthrough. The amp was mainly used with a Webber mini mass attenuator, and the sound was muffled. Using +3 or 6 dB made the sound come alive, but it also sounded like bunch of bees. What a weird amp! I have a DSL40c, which I use with a volume pot on the fx loop to "attenuate,” and I was going to take pictures of the origin to sell it. But before I did that , decided to take the attenuator out, then add a tc electronic spark booster on the fx loop of the origin. Set the volume to taste and the gain to taste in the spark which also has bass and treble control, and voila! The origin came alive and tamed (attenuated). The wasp sound from the treble was gone. And finally, after a year, I was able to enjoy the amp. It seems to me that the treble control on the origin adds tons of gain and fizz to what I call a bunch of bees inside the amp. It's so odd. Well, anyway, if I could, I would make the mod, but I’m neither experienced nor in live in Australia. Greetings from Costa Rica.
A few years ago I purchased a Keeley Filaments pedal. I love it! I can can go from mild overdrive to full blown metal. I have to say, I am very impressed with Keeley's entire line. They really get it right.
I dig them too. I been wondering if any other type of gain pedal in the fx loop Of the origin 50 will make it another beast. I’m happy that my issue was resolved coz the amp sounded odd imo. It was the attenuator and how much treble it takes off. The origin didn’t like the 3-6bd compensation from the attenuator at all. Once I took it off and added the spark on the fx loop it can alive. Even stranger the treble knob on the spark do not make the amp go full bees in a bag 😅 🤘🏻 Headfirst mod is absolutely stunning one day I’ll have it done on my amp
Yeah the treble knob almost seems to do nothing but thin the tone then actually add treble, hell the presence adds more tone and character then the treble, never thought to just cut the treble knob and boost the highs in the fx.
hi, I have watched several origin mod amps and sound greats. Which is de route signal that we ear on that videos.? thanks I want check more because the ones I watched I liked and make me think about this concept
where is that red wire coming from under the board going to gain pot? can you add more information to the plexi 50 mod like added component values ? i just ordered an origin 50 after watching excitedly this video but realeyes i need more info ... i will pay you for a layout diagram of what the modifications are ... i listened to you over and over and couldnt understand it ... i watched all your related videos and tone talk you were on ...
If i was going to do it i would pull the factory boards and pots and wire in a turret board so you can easily put it back to stock and it doesn't look butchered if you want to sell it.
@@bobdillon1138 if the mods are done correctly, it doesn't have to look butchered, and I agree with you, just pulling out all the PCBs, chassis mount the pots and tubes, and do turret style wiring. You can salvage or not components from the boards, or just buy everything anew, I'm sure a good modder could use these as bare chassis and do about any vintage Marshal style amp in existence!
@ i got it going. I didn’t have the tone stack cable hooked up from the connectors. Only question is I connected the cable underneath from bottom of c39 to R65 like on the 50w video. Is it also ok to connect bottom of R67 to R65 on top with bright cap?
Hi Jason, I would like to try your mod on the Origin 20 but have not done an amp mod before. Could you cover the proper way to safe out the amp for working on? I have watched some vids on draining filter caps for older amps (handwired) but not sure where to look on the PCB type boards like the Origin 20 or SV20H.
Hello! I am going to get around to doing the mods to my Original 50H in the fall, meantime, would there be any benefit to swapping out the stock MV for a PPIMV? Or adding the PPIMV in addition to stock? Cheers!
Very cool mate! The 20 also feeds the OT CT from the second node, and shifts the entire b+ arrangement down a node. I ended up just pulling the PI node completely and shifting it all back up to the standard arrangement, not sure of the 50 has the same layout. That first node”choke” resistor is also underrated because of this, I think it’s 2w dissipating 2.6 from memory.
I bought the origin 20 with the intention of modding it and i regret it, should've gone with the 50. My Origin has just sat untouched for months, I'm debating either gutting it and building a 50 watt 2204 from scratch inside or just selling it and buying a kit amp or maybe an Ampeg Lee Jackson amp or a Laney GH series amp. Both are hot rodded 800's circuits. The EL-34's in the Origin 20 just hold the tone back in my opinion. They should've done EL-84's like Friedman or even 6V6 tubes. It seems Marshall is content to completely ignore all the innovation and improvements that other companies have implemented in their classic designs.
@@HeadfirstAmps that might be what I do. If I did what I said with gutting the 20 I'd get new transformers as well. Basically have a full on 2204 disguised as a little origin 20. Nothing but the chassis and head shell would be original. Although it would be a bit funny to me as a sleeper amp I don't know if it's worth it haha. Probably better off modding the 50 or getting another amp entirely.

A tone job pedal from Earthquaker devices in the effects loop also works nicely as I have found

Would it be possible to implement the JEL mods on this or the 800?
Yes

It’s PCB mount tube sockets
Refer to the Origin 20 Plexi video posted a few weeks back

@@JohnWiku You do have to drill holes to chassis mount tube sockets so some butchering is needed lol
is there a update to the original 50 watt mod? I did mine to that video and have no sound. love the videos btw
There is a ‘revisited’ video, I think it’s the latest. Get into the FB group for tons of help.

This is VERY cool!
Hard to tell from the video but how close is the feel to a 1987?
Legit, practically the same
Is it all possible to made a origin 50 (20) sound like super bass like a jmp 1992 or 1986
Sure, the mod could be adapted to a 1986 type circuit

Adding the PPIMV would add much more versatility!
The different combos of pot positions will yeld different tones, use it for your advantage!
@@JohnWiku thanks for your reply! I’m just waiting for a kit to arrive, then I’ve gotta work out where to tie the connections in
Great videos. What about the DSL20. Is that one any good and can it be modded to sound more like an 800?
I did mod a DSL100 once, it's on the channel. Haven't tried to mod a DSL20 ....yet!
Would be really cool to see what you could do to a DSL20. I like the 20 because it’s compact and light.
what kind of guitar is that?!
Knaggs

Maybe sell the 20 and find a 2nd hand 50, then do the mod. Those transformers in the 20 won't deliver a 50w amp even if you gut it.
