I bought a whole library at an estate sale for $400 because I liked the kind of books that the guy had. I listed maybe 150 only so far and I made my money back and over $900 profit. Still have a lot of books left to list

@@josh_graff it is quite a lot of books, I first filled up my Honda CR-V , then went home and picked up a Dodge pro master city van and drove back and filled it up to the top too. Unloading all the books was hard, carrying them inside the house and up the stairs...

I like your sorting method. I’ve been selling on Amazon and eBay since 2018 (sell on Mercari and have sold on whatnot as well). I started out as just a book seller on Amazon. There is so much competition on Amazon, I haven’t listed anything in over a year, de-listed everything under $8 (plus shipping) and cancelled my monthly seller account and just pay the extra fee per book. I still get some sells on Amazon. The past year, I’ve been having good luck lotting up books by author or genre and selling them on eBay. I source most of my books at the 4 local thrift shops in my area (there were 5, but the Habitat ReStore closed-the rent was too damn high, literally; used to volunteer there before the pandemic). Paperbacks are, typically, 50 cents each, hardcover $1, but a couple of the stores often run sales or mark down items that have been on the shelf for awhile. One of the thrift shop charges a dollar for PBs and $2 for hardcover-don’t usually pick up anything at that one.

Book grade tips:
Poor- broken binding, loose pages
Acceptable- underlined, library marks
Good- foxing, spots, worn cover
Very Good- light wear, marks on endpaper
eBay unfortunately won’t even let you select poor as a condition. I put all good and very good books as good condition. Then all that you would grade as acceptable/poor I list as acceptable.

@@EFCasual yea I really wish eBay had the poor condition. In general I still think it’s a good idea to grade books a level lower than they actually are.

informative video... thanks. We sell a lot of Soviet books (kids, history, literature, travel, art books, cookbooks textbooks and technical manuals as well as Soviet English books) because they are in abundance here in Ukraine. Always interesting to go through them when listing... cheers!

@josh_graff Well, you sell what you can source I guess... there are a lot of ex-Soviets around the world, so they do sell. A lot of esoteric topics, and they're priced right for flipping.
I want to ask your thoughts on something. It takes me about 15 minutes to list to ebay and etsy a book. Most of that time is drafting a description, the method being, photography, reverse image search, find Russian language description texts, google translate that, put instructions into chat gpt with all item specifics, create a simple html description (saved for future duplicate ease of listing), ebay list first with ALL items specifics I can, then etsy, then list.
As you can see, its some work, but I feel I can charge higher prices, and I do see the descriptions on etsy do show up on google for potential customers. Yet I see sellers just have crappy headline and put the headine in the description. What are your thoughts on this process for book selling? Here's an example; www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196373681878

Every year in January I’ll clean out the oldest 10% of my eBay listings. Usually it takes 3 years to get there. Now I’m taking those books to my local used bookstore for store credit.

Yes it crashes a lot when I use custom sku
For about a week my app had an update where the custom sku was in a completely different location and it had quit crashing. I’m hopeful that it will come back soon. I’m seeing updates to the app every few days right now.

I've never had the search with picture button come up next to the search bar. Also eBay says you can share a photo to eBay app but doesn't give me that option either 😢
Hmm that’s strange. I would try deleting your app and downloading a fresh copy of it. Maybe your phone needs updated as well. That’s what I would try.
@@josh_graff yeah I have and just did again. It just shows up the barcode scanner and the voice search. eBay and phone are up to date Android 10. I just use Google lens but just using the app would be so time saving
Hey Josh, how do you approach shipping books on eBay?
Typically I ship them media mail in padded envelopes. I talk about all of my shipping supplies later in the video.
Wrapping in paper helps.
Storing your books, you stated that you put them in boxes with skus,by number, how do you know from your listing which box to go to?
On eBay their is a field called custom SKU. I put the box number in that field. Only you can see that number not the buyer.

I also noticed that when you scanned the books on eBay, you’re searching the listed book prices. Not the sold/completed items. Is there a reason for that?
When I’m listing books I’m more worried about the lowest currently listed price. I do also check the sold listings. Most books I list on eBay have no solds in the last 90 days.
Gotcha! Okay that makes sense, as obviously that would be a price that you would need to beat in order to sell your current listing.
Does the library sell discounted?
Some libraries sell books and some don’t.

How do you decide shipping costs?
I use calculated media mail shipping for books. I estimate the weight of the book when making the listing.
You said you use bubble mailers for media mail here in the comments. My post office has refused to accept them as packaging for media mail no matter how thin they are. Have you ever come across this situation?
Never have. I do know they won’t accept bubble mailers for first class envelope. Maybe that is the confusion? What do they want you to use?

I do $7 plus shipping. If you do free shipping then $7 is to low to make any money.

Nope. Maybe 1 out of every 1000 I’ll put something in there.
Do you only sell books?
No I sell lots of other things as well. Books however is my biggest category.
So as you probably know, if you list at minimum $7.00 plus shipping you (you, me, whoever) are already screwed because literally 99% of books are for sale by others for ie “$4.50 plus free shipping”. Literally selling for less than what shipping actually costs!!! Not just one either but 3,4,5,6 listings at “4.50 free shipping”. Everyone is always going to buy the least expensive book. How do you compete with that. How do you ever sell a book for $7.00 or more plus shipping? It’s impossible. Those jerks ruin it for everyone else by undercutting so much (in order to gain a customer list for their other books on their website I assume) and literally most any and every book has those bs prices. I can’t compete with that. How are you selling any books at all or ever dealing with that crap? Seriously? if you have a way, please let me in on your secret because I can’t compete with those jerks and LOSE money by selling a book (with free shipping)for literally less than the price of shipping. Thanks for any advice or insight you can offer…
I just don’t list books that others have listed that low.
There is a market, even a small one, where I’ve sold plenty of books even on Amazon with shipping paid over other listings way cheaper than mine. Perhaps yours might have better listing descriptions and pictures whereas others don’t have anything. The customer will pay a little more to know exactly what they’re getting without the hassle of returns. Don’t short change yourself.
I sell books and my minimum is $8 + shipping if it's worth less than I redonate
There's no money in selling crap books on eBay. I have 300 listings and my minimum price is $50 If a book aint worth $50, I don't even want it.
Crap books pay my mortgage every month.
