I LOVE that TR-78 Skinner! I have waded waist deep across rivers with that on my belt multiple times. I have never had any kind of issues with rust. Mind you I do live in a typically 17% relative humidity environment...
I keep the sheath well oiled, and I store the knife in a duffel size bag with oil soaked rags inside...

A blade that rusts doesn't necessarily mean crap steel. Stainless steel is less likely to rust. High carbon steel is a rust magnet.

Oftentimes these sorts of rust problems are related to the way the leather of the sheath is treated. Poshland for example was notorious for this with their older sheaths. To the extent possible I suggest storing (carbon) knives next to their sheath rather than in them. Cheers mate!

I have only started collecting knives a few months back, and specializing in larger inexpensive Bowies. You confirmed my feelings that Timber Rattler brand is the one for me! I have a few examples of other brands, mostly Chinese, and the finish and fit is just not as nice as the TRs out of Pakistan, plus the TR brand has a few videos out on TH-cam showing their craftsmen making both stainless and Damascus steel knifes. Here in the USA, workers wages are high enough that a TR knife would cost $200 or more. I like it that if there are small imperfections, it shows it is hand made, not assembly line robot made!
Thanks for the time you took to make this video! I will be looking for the numbers I do not have! These knives are not only a pleasure to look at, but also quite usable, and good for barter in a SHTF situation.

Here's a head scratcher. After my post here, my son takes "my knife" fishing! After a whole day of bait prep, I had him clean it up (really well) and he managed to get almost all of the blotches off using CLR of all things but, the new stains it got around the gaurd, stayed (they don't look bad either)! Also, the arm shaving edge I put on it, "kept"!!! That Outlaw is one HELLUVA KNIFE!

I always put my carbon steel knives in vinegar. It gives it a black patina and prevents rust. Preserves the knives integrity. I don’t really care if it’s shiny I kind of like it being black. If the patina get scraped off, I just give it another vinegar bath. I still put a little bit of oil on it, but I never store my knives in their sheaves either.

Timber rattler makes budget knives with budget steel....as long as you go into it knowing that. They are fun to play with but i wouldn't use them for any serious jobs like chopping and battoning, they might do it but they WILL eventually roll or chip and completely break in some situations, I have several they are nice to look at but they do not get used!

I recommend you do some research on dissimilar metal corrosion. I was an aviation structures mechanic in the navy, where I learned about this subject. When you place two different metals together, a chemical reaction happens which produces corrosion. Your TR65 probably has the purest brass, which probably accelerated the process. This, and salt water makes it even worst. Hence the US Navy taking this issue very seriously. I hope this is helpful. Just recommend more TLC than others. 👍

I had to come back to this video cause pretty much the same thing happened to my Outlaw! This steel isn't stainless! Mine was oiled to the point of being sopping wet and it still stained! Now, it's a GREAT knife regardless! I put an edge on it and it became a SUPER BLADE!!! Here's the thing. It stained, not rusted and, I like the way it looks lol! But, I really doubt that the steel, is stainless...

      Are you telepathic???
I just ordered this knife !!!
      This is so crazy !!
This is twice now this has happened to me this week .
I ordered a few knives to be reviewed, and other than this one ( Timber Wolf ), I had my finger on the checkout button on another.
Before I placed the complete order button I hesitated.
Took a break and went to TH-cam .
A guy who I never in my life heard of , sent me a comment about how I would love this particular knife ( a big ass Bowie with stag handle ).
      I was blown away !!
It was like he was watching over my shoulder !!
      Creepy !!!!
Anyway - I did buy the Timber Wolf and the other is still in my cart .
I would of bought already but the shipping and tax fees are seriously outrageous!!!
$118 knife turns into $147 at checkout .
I sent the company a message asking for a promo code or something .
I’ve been buying from this company for years and I must have at least 40 transactions with them .
All I’m requesting is a discount or free shipping .
Let’s see what they say ….
Anyway …. Excited about this Timber Wolf !
I love the look now let’s see how it holds up . ( don’t know what kind of steel this is ).
      Oh !!
One more surprise blade heading my way ….
Check out the Vetus Tiger Bowie .
A lot of knife at a great price !!!! ( comes in a beautiful leather sheath and a case with those suit case buttons / latches ).

Since they don't specify the steel type, except Pakistani Stainless, the rust indicates that the Western Outlaw is made of a higher carbon steel than typical 3Cr13 used on inexpensive Bowie knives. Watching tests with the Western Outlaw, it seems to perform better than 3Cr13.
