I had a revelation about knives and found that Bowie knives are the best. I ordered a cheap one and got a cheap one. Now that I’ve been stung I want to have one that is $150 quality. Something like the cold steel 1917 frontier or the white deer extreme xxl Bowie. I like the clip point design the most with a saber or hollow grind.

That’s a Huge Congratulations!!! I wish I could find one at our pawn shop . Our local shop only has jewelry, DVDs , old lawn mowers and old bicycles. And maybe a chainsaw. That’s a great find brother !! Treasure !!!!
I used to just keep in their sheaths and put away in a box . But it depends on the steel . Carbon can rust . So if storing in a sheath , make sure to wipe some oil on the blade first - then put in sheath . I have over 500 knives to worry about . If I only had a dozen , I would take the blade , wipe with oil , put in an old sock , and rubber band to its sheath . I think that’s the best way . Wrap in a cloth .

Love a good Bowie Knife. 👍🏼👍🏼 I’ve had so many over the decades. You have a great top ten there. I had the Case XX Bowie, but the handle was too short for my hand. My edc these days is the TOPS Prather War Bowie. It’s definitely in my top five. I have a Western W49 model J that I bought in 1987. And one of my favorite bowies is a hand made Iron Mistress.

Hey cowboy, I’m looking at the CS trail master in vg-1 sanmai, But I wonder how it is to sharpen by hand? I have no experience with VG-1 and need my knives to be able to be sharpened in the Canadian wilderness
@@serpentbeyondthehedge6520 I think the one thing that should ease your mind is how well the blade stays sharp . The longevity is so superior to others . I’m not a master sharpener or anything. My most commonly used knives , I just use the handy Diamond rod and after a few licks on both sides , I’m good to go . Some really dull knives I have to find another technique. I don’t think I ever took the rod to my Trailmaster . If I did I don’t remember. I highly recommend the Recon Scout too . I call it the TM’s little brother 😂
@ Ya I heard it has pretty good edge retention, I’m just worried bout being half way threw processing a moose and dull the blade and can’t put a edge back on in the bush
@@serpentbeyondthehedge6520 I have PTSD from Knife sharpening. No joke . About 16 or so years ago , my Buck 119 was a bit dull after years of abuse . I don’t know what the heck I did to that thing. I tried using a belt sander and it only got worse . I wound up bringing it in to my workplace, and I handed it to an old friend of mine . I asked him if he could fix up my mess . I was so embarrassed to give it to him in that shape . So he had for just a few days . Not only did he put an extremely sharp edge on it , he removed all the scratches. It looked brand Spanking new !! I don’t know how he did it ! ( he grew up an avid camper and hunter and is very familiar with all types of weaponry so that is why I chose him ). LSS - I wound up letting him keep it . He refused at first . But I insisted . I wound up buying another anyway . I said “ I want you to have this as a gift . Plus I may be asking you in the future do clean up more “. Haha I finally accepted with gratitude. I had left that workplace about 13 years ago so I never seen him again . I hope he still thinks of me every time he breaks that out . It’s probably 25 years old by now ( that Buck 119 ). Maybe even older . I’m still kicking myself . Haha
@@tubes5150 No doubt some can’t be a pain to get an edge back on deff had some that took hours to redo by hand. I fully believe in beable to sharpen your own stuff if you can. I’m a wood carver always sharpening knives lol Never heard of the VG-1 until I was looking at this trail master and have no clue if I’d be able to sharpen it or not. I got stones but my carving knives I sharpen them all with emery cloth and strop them. Always hair popping sharp.

If you like Fallkniven think about saving up for a Fallkniven Modern Bowie! Its like the Trail master but slightly bigger and 100% Fallking badass. I also like the bark river bravo 3 idk if thats a bowie knife tho very big very thick!

I will always have a soft spot for the classic Buck (number 9), but I would say number 3 the Falkniven might be the best one of the lot... unless you are fighting orcs and goblins, a Big Bowie is a bit impractical for everyday use (at least for me). But I do understand the appeal.
Hahaha Definitely the appeal is really something. Yeah I do agree for the most part . As a collector - they really do look marvelous hanging around the others . But for EDC - you want to stick with something under a 6” blade . Even 6 is a bit of a stretch.
So many love that knife . Not me . I’m not a “ blued steel “ fan . I had for about 3 weeks and returned it towards credit for the Muela Mag 26 Bowie . I returned 2 knives actually to get the Muela : The Frontier and that Sword Von TEMPSKY Bowie .
@@tubes5150 Wasn’t familiar with Muela or that knife. It’s a good looking knife. I did just order the 1917 Frontier and hope that I love it. Looks like the blade may be an inch or 2 longer on the Frontier than the Muela. That Sherpa-28S Machete sure has caught my eye though.

I ordered a 3V TM a few days ago from Midway for $238 delivered with their 10% discount for registering. Yesterday they had a sale for $216 and they are offering a 25% coupon on knives. Hot damn!!! That makes the Coldsteel Trail Master 3V $163, or $176 delivered. So I got a second. Wtf could I do? So I got 2 for $400. If one is over-gound I will return it. It seems to be a quality issue recently. But if both are perfect, I will keep both. Btw, today the sale price jumps from $216 to $349!!!! WTH???? I, think my price was a fluke. Especially with the 25% off they are currently running!
Right on brother! You got a great collection! Coldsteel seems to be the best compromise with quality, variety, value, and durability. I prefer a coldsteel over my BRKs and Fallknivens!

I don't like a choil on a knife that will be used for hard use. Its a weak point and does nothing for you. You can still get your hand close to edge without it. It's a big negative for me. Nice video thanks.

No they didn't. They look very similar because both the San Mai Trail Master and the Fallknivens are manufactured by Japanese knife maker Hattori in Seki City Japan.

I just read that you have the Longhorn Bowie. That is Mumma Bear’s favorite knife.
I prefer the Prather.
I would recommend the Prather to anyone who likes Bowies. It may be the smallest Bowie knife I own, but it definitely is a top 3 favorite.

Hey cowboy, I’m looking at the CS trail master in vg-1 sanmai,
But I wonder how it is to sharpen by hand? I have no experience with VG-1 and need my knives to be able to be sharpened in the Canadian wilderness
@@serpentbeyondthehedge6520 I think the one thing that should ease your mind is how well the blade stays sharp .
The longevity is so superior to others .
I’m not a master sharpener or anything.
My most commonly used knives , I just use the handy Diamond rod and after a few licks on both sides , I’m good to go .
Some really dull knives I have to find another technique.
I don’t think I ever took the rod to my Trailmaster .
If I did I don’t remember.
I highly recommend the Recon Scout too .

Ya I heard it has pretty good edge retention, I’m just worried bout being half way threw processing a moose and dull the blade and can’t put a edge back on in the bush
I had some one else say that I’d need a belt sander with fine grit to re sharpen it.

About 16 or so years ago , my Buck 119 was a bit dull after years of abuse .
I don’t know what the heck I did to that thing.
I tried using a belt sander and it only got worse .
I wound up bringing it in to my workplace, and I handed it to an old friend of mine .
I asked him if he could fix up my mess .
I was so embarrassed to give it to him in that shape .
So he had for just a few days .
Not only did he put an extremely sharp edge on it , he removed all the scratches.
It looked brand Spanking new !!
I don’t know how he did it !
( he grew up an avid camper and hunter and is very familiar with all types of weaponry so that is why I chose him ).
LSS -
I wound up letting him keep it .
He refused at first .
But I insisted .
I wound up buying another anyway .
I said “ I want you to have this as a gift . Plus I may be asking you in the future do clean up more “.

I finally accepted with gratitude.
I had left that workplace about 13 years ago so I never seen him again .
I hope he still thinks of me every time he breaks that out .
It’s probably 25 years old by now ( that Buck 119 ).
Maybe even older .
I’m still kicking myself .

No doubt some can’t be a pain to get an edge back on deff had some that took hours to redo by hand.
I fully believe in beable to sharpen your own stuff if you can. I’m a wood carver always sharpening knives lol
Never heard of the VG-1 until I was looking at this trail master and have no clue if I’d be able to sharpen it or not.
I got stones but my carving knives I sharpen them all with emery cloth and strop them. Always hair popping sharp.

I will always have a soft spot for the classic Buck (number 9), but I would say number 3 the Falkniven might be the best one of the lot... unless you are fighting orcs and goblins, a Big Bowie is a bit impractical for everyday use (at least for me). But I do understand the appeal.

Yeah I do agree for the most part .
As a collector - they really do look marvelous hanging around the others .
But for EDC - you want to stick with something under a 6” blade .
Even 6 is a bit of a stretch.

Wasn’t familiar with Muela or that knife. It’s a good looking knife. I did just order the 1917 Frontier and hope that I love it. Looks like the blade may be an inch or 2 longer on the Frontier than the Muela. That Sherpa-28S Machete sure has caught my eye though.

I got a Trail Master in O1 15years ago. I have been wanting a 3V for a few years. I ordered a 3V TM a few days ago from Midway for $238 delivered with their 10% discount for registering. Yesterday they had a sale for $216 and they are offering a 25% coupon on knives. Hot damn!!! That makes the Coldsteel Trail Master 3V $163, or $176 delivered. So I got a second. Wtf could I do? So I got 2 for $400. If one is over-gound I will return it. It seems to be a quality issue recently. But if both are perfect, I will keep both. Btw, today the sale price jumps from $216 to $349!!!! WTH???? I, think my price was a fluke. Especially with the 25% off they are currently running!

I don't like a choil on a knife that will be used for hard use. Its a weak point and does nothing for you. You can still get your hand close to edge without it. It's a big negative for me. Nice video thanks.
