Good video. I wish people would pay more attention to servicing the electrodes. We replaced them on every annual service, as I have seen a lot of bad delayed ignitions from electrodes that looked good but had hair line crack or pits in the porcelain that shorted the spark to ground intermittently.

You were helpful. I saw that your new electrodes have points ground on the ends. Mine were burnt off. I ground new points with a conical mounted stone in the drill press. A block of wood with a 3/32 hole drilled horizontally guided the electrode as the stone ground the point. The electrodes had to be bent because they were now too short. It all worked out fine. Thanks for the video.
Good info. I recently bought a new burner tube that came with a new burner gun and electrodes. The electrodes were not able to be adjusted to spec and carefully bending them with a pair of grips was the solution I ended up with also.

U just saved my ass. Heard my furnace not ignite and checked my electrodes the tips were burnt off and way out of adjustment. Took them to the bench grinder to make a nice point and adjusted them. Hit the reset button and it's back burning better than it has in years.
My electrode tips are pretty close to yours, but had trouble understanding the gauge. As long as the furnace ignites right away and burns as it should with the right flame, am I so to speak okay with the electrode setting ?
When my Igniter Failed, I had fuel leaking out the bottom of the Housing on my Heated Pressure washer. The Burner works well now, but when it fires up, I get a steady drip drip drip of fuel out the bottom. The drip stops as soon as I shut off the pressure washer wand and the flame goes out. I cannot find the source of the leak. I have read that some techs replace the internal insulation in the Heater body -- Is that a possible source of this Dripping? What else should I look for or replace? This is a 3 year old burner that has probably only been used for a hour or two TOTAL.

have Fire lake horizon oil furnace. electrodes are 1/2 9/16 apart...won't light unless you turn air pressure down to 5 psi from 12-13 psi.no adjustment for electrodes.
Hi, thank you for this video, i have a question, my burner is a old Beckett series A,AF model burner, i have been using 1.10/80W nozzle, i just wonder if it is right one, also on the burner does it say the what nozzle size to use ?!
Miller oil furnace won't ignite getting fuel can ignite manually then runs OK once it reaches the thermostat setting shuts off OK but when it starts back up loads with fuel but won't ignite. what's the problem?
Not necessarily, could cost you more money, you want the proper size nozzle for your house/furnace, a smaller nozzle will just make the furnace run longer and if not set up or rated for your furnace will just soot it up and make a mess and possibly ice up and destroy your chimney. Best way to save on fuel is to have your furnace cleaned and maintained annually by a qualified technician with proper analyzing tools.
If you use a smaller nozzle you must adjust the air for proper combustion. The result will be that the furnace must run longer to produce the same amount of heat. And if you get really cold weather it may not be able to keep up. The whole furnace system must be sized and adjusted to suit your needs. A smaller nozzle won't necessarily save anything if you have to burn the same amount of oil for the same amount of heat. It will just take longer to warm the house.
My furnace turns off by itself and sounds like rumble sometimes then light goes on then I have to reset and turns back on. I have the temp set to 62 because its vacant right now
Wen was your furnace serviced? Change the oil filter , nozzle. It's failing to ignite , if your nozzle and filter are good and it's still failing to ignite, it could be your ignition transformer.
might be a stupid question however Ill ask you anyway, once a oil burner fires up, does the transformer continue making the arc spark in front of the nozzle or not?
so the bottom line is after the transformer electrodes spark the flame to get it started , then the cad cell sees the flame and shuts off the transformer and it the flame stays burning by the pressure and atomized spray until the oil pump shuts down then the flame stops,is this correct?
The electrodes should be squared off just like they come from the factory....Measuring gap is edge to edge and height above the center of nozzle is to edge of electrodes

i have the same question and mine is leaving what looks like a carbon fingernail up to the electrodes, making it harder to light the burner, i was thinking it may be the electrode setup in my burner just getting older, im going to try to readjust mine to see if this helps
@@geraldhenke had a professional come and the nozzle was wrong and the air flow wasnt properly adjusted and the electrodes have to be in the proper position. best to leave that stuff to people who do it for a living. i tried to be cheap and save some money and got some scrub who did a neighbors. check your roof I had soot coming out of my chimney which made it black around the top of it
You didn’t use the electrode gauge correctly when you set the 1/2 inch above the nozzle at 4:24. The center mark on the gauge lines up with the center of the nozzle. You used one of the outer lines on the center of the nozzle. The gauge also shows the distance ahead when you use the gauge, so you don’t need a separate ruler. If you look at your video at 4:24 you can read the gauge. The electrodes always line up on the + marks which show the proper position of the electrodes.
How long was it running before you pulled it oout? months? it is an oil burner (Diesel Fuel)- its gonna come out black... nothing will change that.. i clean mine twice in a season..
Too late now, but most likely your burner combustion numbers are way off. With the correct nozzle in good condition and proper air shutter settings, there should be zero smoke and soot on an AF/AFG or Carlin burner. This needs to be set up by a qualified technician who both possesses and knows how to use combustion analyzing equipment. If the tech sets it by eye, don't call him back.

Smoother lightoffs, works better in colder situations when the oil is thicker in viscosity.
What if i buy a different size nozzle that sprays less oil? Will that save me money?

You want to save money don't buy a smaller nozzle buy a nice throw blanket

My furnace turns off by itself and sounds like rumble sometimes then light goes on then I have to reset and turns back on.
I have the temp set to 62 because its vacant right now
I have the same problem. I'm assuming it's because it's dirty. Do you remember how you fixed it?
cad cell replacement is needed
cad cell replacement is needed.
Wen was your furnace serviced? Change the oil filter , nozzle. It's failing to ignite , if your nozzle and filter are good and it's still failing to ignite, it could be your ignition transformer.
@@johnpicarojr.4618 wrong. Call a technician
might be a stupid question however Ill ask you anyway, once a oil burner fires up, does the transformer continue making the arc spark in front of the nozzle or not?
+Rondo Schiavoni Your transformer should shut down. If it does not the flame sensor is not working. (Its the electric eye attached to the transformer)
IN OTHER WORDs THE TRANSFORMER IS NOT needed TO KEEP THE FLAME BURNING UNTIL THE WALL THERMOSTAT in your home TELLS IT TO SHUT OFF?
+lecon chuitt What keeps the flame going then, once the flame is established as long as oil spray keeps coming the flame is maintained?
so the bottom line is after the transformer electrodes spark the flame to get it started , then the cad cell sees the flame and shuts off the transformer and it the flame stays burning by the pressure and atomized spray until the oil pump shuts down then the flame stops,is this correct?
Rondo Schiavoni Like you, I'm not so sure. No straight answer yet. I'll have to read up on it.
Thanks, Keith! Youda gouda 🧀
The tips on mine are not pointed but squared off and blunt. How do I measure the gap in this case??
You can try to adjust them to spec and you might be able to get them close enough, or you can get new electrodes for ~$15
The electrodes should be squared off just like they come from the factory....Measuring gap is edge to edge and height above the center of nozzle is to edge of electrodes
That's what I'm talking about thank
Good video
Good video but I wish he showed when he set the electros in front of the nozzle. he cut that part out
Very nice video ....
wondering if you can help me out , i would like to add a hour meter to see how much oil fuel im using , is there a setup you can show us? im using a beckett burner with a .75 80A nozzle and want to keep track of my usage and not spend a lot of cash doing so , thnaks
Great video #littlespressurewashingservice
Bunerr ke bare me bataye
I had a tune up and ever since the boiler is running slightly rougher. i wont call the guy back i had for the tune up because i dont think he knows what hes doing. could it be the electrodes are not in the proper position or he put the wrong nozzle on? Anyone in the NY area? Thanks
i have the same question and mine is leaving what looks like a carbon fingernail up to the electrodes, making it harder to light the burner, i was thinking it may be the electrode setup in my burner just getting older, im going to try to readjust mine to see if this helps
@@geraldhenke had a professional come and the nozzle was wrong and the air flow wasnt properly adjusted and the electrodes have to be in the proper position. best to leave that stuff to people who do it for a living. i tried to be cheap and save some money and got some scrub who did a neighbors. check your roof I had soot coming out of my chimney which made it black around the top of it
@@robertr2213 no one, and I mean no one in my area will touch a waste oil burner. So I'm just figuring it out myself
@@robertr2213 I HAD A PRO DO IT AND HE HAD THE SETTINGS ALL WRONG
@@AIRMANBEAR the pro did the settings wrong? then hes not a pro lol
I found a way to test if you got them right use a stun gun works real well.
thank-you.
Graçias!
Has anyone ever told you that you look like Chris Smither? He is a singer songwriter, you look like him.
When I pull out the electrode assembly the whole thing is black. What could this mean?
How long was it running before you pulled it oout? months? it is an oil burner (Diesel Fuel)- its gonna come out black... nothing will change that.. i clean mine twice in a season..
Carburetor cleaner sprayed on them will bring them back to life.
you can also use brake cleaner
Too late now, but most likely your burner combustion numbers are way off. With the correct nozzle in good condition and proper air shutter settings, there should be zero smoke and soot on an AF/AFG or Carlin burner. This needs to be set up by a qualified technician who both possesses and knows how to use combustion analyzing equipment. If the tech sets it by eye, don't call him back.
