Another great video Tom! I was looking to see when you switched away from the GH5....have you started using the Sony a6500, the BLack magic, or are you still using the GH5? Thanks!
Great reviews Tom! Love it as this is the most comprehensive review I have ever seen on TH-cam! You really do better than others out there on TH-cam! After long research finally made my decision to go with gh5!
For me the best function is the in body image stabilization. It helps alot with shooting handheld hanging out of a tourbus on holiday. And you get shoot pictures between 1/4 1/8 shutter with good results
Very Nice Review. NOW do a Test with one of those handheld 3-axis gimbals with a small ROKINON prime lens on the camera to see if it could handle it as far as stabilization is concerned. Thanx Tom. D.
One of the new features that I really like compared to the GH4 is the in-body stabilization. When combined with lens stabilization the GH5 alone is almost as good as my Pilotfly stabilizer--which died prematurely. But now I don't need the gimbal anymore.
Tom! I'm an addict of your review and tips, my friend! Congratulations on having one of the best channels on youtube and also your beautiful family! Thanks for sharing so much with us! Quick Question: (might not be quick lol) You're using the Atomos Ninja inferno, excellent screen! But what is the benefit of recording externally?
Karlos Colon it gives you 4k 60fps in 10bit. In camera you get 10bit in 4k up to 30fps. Also you get a better codec for editing then internally in camera which is havealy compressed and doesn't work right now in premiere davinci etc. Has to be transcoded.
Been waiting for this video for so long! I can go and buy it now lol p.s. Really pleased you took your time with checking out the camera on different projects, before the review! Awesome!
Hi Tom! I'm planning to buy the GH5 and an external monitor/recorder. What battery pack would you recommend (taking into consideration that I will be flying all over Europe)?
The biggest problem i see with gh5 is if dirt gets between the protective glass & the sensor you need to send the camera back to panasonic as sensor needs to be changed :( this has already happened to quite a few users. so be cautious when changing lenses outdoors. also my unit died after 3 months of light use. whole pcb needs to be changed
I really love your Videos, However, there are some Corrections to be made in this Video. GH5 doesn't record 4K 60 FPS at 10 Bit, but at 8 Bit 10 Bit video recording option is available only for 30 FPS, or below.
Great videos and thanks, have a question? I have a gh5 i shoot in mov and 4k 10bit 24frame, but when i try to play back on my pc or mac from the Sd card, it wont let me view the video, is something wrong with my cam? what i am i doing wrong?
Yes, it's a limitation of not having enough internal processing power. Maybe we will get higher 10-bit fps when the GH6 comes around in about 2-3 years.
Excellent overview Tom. The 10 bit footage looks great. I have the Panasonic G80/85 which is good enough for me right now. The only thing I wish it had is the variable frame rate like the GH5. I wish the GH5 had built-in ND filters-that would make life a lot easier for achieving the correct shutter angle for video. Which ND filters do you use/recommend? Yo uar right about the lenses too; the first 2 lenses I bought were the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 & 35-100mm f2.8-both sharp & detailed. The Pana/Leica f1.4 is superb too, but more expensive than the f1.7 version-oh well! Not gonna get rid of my f1.4 on now as it rocks! Keep up the good work.
Hey Tom, I checked the link to your website...I couldn't find the GH5 custom camera settings file to download. Did you remove it from your Google Drive where you have your .cube and .vlt files?
Thanks for the review. I do a fair bit of hand held work, so the internal image stabilization in the GH5 (compared to the GH4, which has none), sounds appealing. Any thoughts/experience with image stabilization with the GH5?
First I have to say that you make great videos/really inspiring and make me wanna go out and shoot. I have a question about two camera's. I'm planning to buy a GH5 or an A6500. I use it for making documentaries/human interest and after movies (clubs/festivals). I want a camera that will last long because I'm young and have to work hard for al my gear. I would like te know which camera (in combination with a lens or other gear) you would recommend ?
Hey Tom. I own a GH5 aswell and I'm kinda curious how exactly does your power management look like? What setup are you using to give the camera the energy it needs SAFELY without huge spikes in voltage and so on.
Just picked up my gh5 yesterday with the 25mm f1.7, I got the kit with the 12-35 but they were out if stock and panasonic in Australia are also low on stock due to demand. I also hope to get the 35-100. There is a mark ii, is it really worth it as I can find a mark i second hand for a few hundred cheaper? Thank you
Thanks for this excellent video! 1. Apart from the 4K 60FPS 10 bit feature, does recording externally (Atomos Ninja Inferno) deliver a better image quality than recording internally? 2. What are your experiences with the cine d mode (settings, quality, colour etc.)? Best regards
thanks for ur great info and reviews,i realy like ur channel dude.what u think abot sony rx10 mark 3? and what u think about rx10 mark3 vs gh5 for music video making.tanx so much
Hey Tom, does the Gh5 have the "Phi" mark on it people talk about for measuring focal distances using a tape measure? I can't seem to find those markings on my camera anywhere and I'm curious how you go about that.
Hey Tom, If you can only afford one of the following option: GH5 with 1 lens (25mm f1.7) or G85 with 2 lenses (12-60mm f3.5-5.6 and 25mm leica f1.4). Which one would you take?
Hi Tom, love your videos and I need your opinion. We are on pre production to shoot a full length that is set on a sailboat in the middle of the pacific all on a GH5. What lenses and stabilization system would you add to the gh5? I would really appreciate your perspective.
Great video Tom, thank you. I want to ask you if you've used the Came.TV cage along with the Metabones adaptor? Someone had said online that they couldn't fit the Metabones adaptor on the camera with the cage - which I hope isn't true since I need both the cage and adaptor. From the looks of it, the cage you showed (on the right) that fits the audio interface looks like it's design would allow an adaptor. Thanks again Tom.
Hey Tom is that your little man in the video walking around. WoW I remember when you first showed him on your video. Time Flys I had a question about the speed booster which exact speedbooster would I need to purchase to use with the canon glass. I can't remember the exact numbers but I believe there are 2 options like a .64 & .71 or something like that. I could be way off on the numbers but I remember there being 2 of them. Which one should I be purchasing. Thanks.
Tom Antos - ok thanks. Because I hear some people stating that if your going to be using full frame lenses you should use the 64 and if your going to be using APSC lenses you should be using the 71 ultra wide. So I was sort of confused since my lenses are full frame anyways.
I see you have the same lens I have , 12-35. I like it with one exception and it's big for the price, I can not focus manually at all. I have heard others say it works but you must be patient. I can not get it to move the focus at all. Just keep spinning slowly but nothing. I love my sigma 16 35 with meta bones but it's so big I wish I could get the 12 35 to work. Do you or anybody reading this think it's defective? I guess I should call Panasonic but I am new to photography so I fear it's user error
Hey Tom. Love your channel. But how do you avoid picking up the noisy sound from the Ninja Inferno when recording sound? Do you use a very long boom mic or wireless mics?
This camera takes most of the boxes for making a great travel video camera but the one problem that I've discovered is that coming from something like the Sony rx10 Mark 3, which has a 25 x zoom lens taking you from effectively 24 mm to 600 m m at f 2.42 f 4 the closest Lens to that is see 25 to 400 or 12 to 200 m m four thirds lens but it's an F 5.6 very slow. And it's only 16.6 X Zoom. So you're stuck having to carry multiple lenses once again.
When I shoot in variable frame rate for slow motion it's grainy. I usually shoot in vlog is that the problem. It's grainy outside or inside really driving me crazy.
HiI have the gh5 With the panny 12-35Metabones + sigma 18-35I can't decide between two zoomsThe panny 35-100 or the tamron 70-200 vcg2 with metabones. The panny will have dual IS and is way smaller The tamron will have one more stop of light but way bigger and probably not as good at tap to focus vs native Which one would you pick?
Thank you Tom, very helpful video as always. Question for you, with the speed booster and my Canon lens do I still have control of the aperture live while shooting? Take care, Pete
Hey Tom! Do you know if i can use an nvme drive in the atomos ninja inferno (through a sata enclosure, in the SSD caddy)? Of course coupled with the GH5. I have tried 2 SSDs so far, but they cant reach the advertised 10bit-4K-60fps. (Sandisk ULTRA II 480Gb, and a mid-range Corsair). Their customer support offers very little to no help unfortunately. Also no 1080p 120fps or 240fps is available. Thoughts on that? Cheers!
how would you shoot slo motion with the gh 5? 50 fps full HD and 10 bit or 60 fps 4k in 8 bit? Pictureprofile in V-log. A lot of guys using the 60 fps and 4k instead of full hd and 10 bit. But i thought always using 10 bit should be the better decision?
Hey Tom . Great review mate! I'm currently shooting with the panasonic g7, it's a great little camera but I'm really starting to see some problems when shooting in low light I'm getting a pretty noisy image if I push it any further than iso 800. Not sure if you have used it before but is this camera going to crush the g7's low light performance? Cheers mate.
GH5 is better in low light than the G7. That's for sure but it won't crush it. If you want a huge difference then you might be better off with one of the Sony cameras like that a6500 or a7s2
I just wanted to add that 180fps at 1080 is soft. Some say it is closer to 720 than 1080. It improves at 120fps but is still a bit soft. Still pretty awesome though.
the 90fps 1080p on the GH4 was super soft too..just not enough memory bandwidth to save that much data. On the GH4, people did 60fps 1080p and then used twixtor to slow it down more. The GH5 probably has similar memory bandwidth issues at 180fps 1080p.
The Problem i Am Having is i am Using a Neewer 7'' Monitor i Get a Signal OK/Fine But i Can't Figure Out How To Get The PLAY BACK From My GH5 When i Push Play On The Monitor i Get a Pop That Says ( This Motion Image Can Not Be Played ) Whats Up With That Thanks for any Fix Thanks
It's a shame I have a Nikon D3200 with very little video options, it fights with me a lot. It lacks a good video mode. No flip out screen, or headphone jack. I don't have the money to buy a GH5 or any new camera for that matter. It sucks, since it seems like any camera is better then mine. Great review!
If your budget is tight, you might consider a used Nikon D5300 which has a flip-out screen and shoots pretty good 1080p video. ( you can even download the free FLAAT cine profiles for Nikon cameras to get an even better image ) A used D5300 sells for about $300 US on eBay right now.
I am trying to set up to do stop motion, but the GH5 just keeps shooting video. I have the dial to M and other function to the last stop motion dial circle setting. what am i doing wrong?? also, the cam keeps defaulting to 1250 iso and putting stabilizer on? i restarted it as well. it also keeps turning back from stop mo into time lapse when i hit the front. the front shutter sets to record video, but i can’t figure out how to get it back to stills as i think that may be the problem.
hi tom. whats your pick if you have to choose between GH5 vs BMCC 2,5K for film making? currently researching on what camera to buy mainly for making a short film, and maybe commercial low budget TV or web ad. please give me suggestion. thanks tom ;)
I loved the GH5, but the Noise even at ISO 400 in V-LOG just killed me! Even when exposed properly, any shadows or blacks are insanely noisy! Anyone else having the same issue?
I would watch wedding videos here on TH-cam shot with both, where the videographer shows "behind the scenes." Then see which one shoots as you do and then cost it out & see if you can afford it.
I think a big con is the relatively big distance you need to have to the subject to create shallow depth of field. If you use it indoors for example, for companies or stores, there sometimes is not enough room to get the look you want. I love Panasonic G series cameras, but for video full frame gives much better dof. Tom, have you worked with the Canon 1dx mkii? That just blew me away completely.
If you use a SpeedBooster on a GH5 you can get the SAME DOF at SAME the distance by shooting with a wider lens ( i.e. 50mm on the FF and 35mm on the Micro 4/3 with Speedbooster ) and opening up your aperture by one F-stop. So if you are shooting FF at f/2.0, you can match the FF DOF with a GH5 if you shoot at f/1.4 with a Speedbooster. I shoot corporate work with Micro 4/3 cameras ( I was a Canon FF shooter 5 years ago ) and have never had a problem matching FF DOF by shooting with fast Micro 4/3 lenses. ( i.e. f/0.95, f/1.2, f/1.4, etc... )
Not if you use a wider lens. The lowest crop-factor you can achieve with the GH5 is 1.28x using a Metabones XL 0.64 Speedbooster, so you would have to divide the FF lens focal length by 1.28x to obtain the focal-length required by the Speedbooster for the SAME field of view as the FF lens at the SAME distance. So if you were shooting with a FF camera and a 50mm lens, you would need to shoot with a 39mm lens with the Speedbooster XL to see the SAME FOV at the SAME distance. ( 50mm/1.28 = 39mm ) So the rules to get the SAME DOF at the SAME distance are : 1- Shoot with a GH5 and the Speedbooster XL 2- Use an lens that will match the FOV at the SAME distance ( FF lens / 1.28 = Speedbooster XL lens ) 3- Open up 2/3 of a F-stop ( 2/3 F-stop for the SB XL, 1 F-stop for the regular SB ) If you are using the regular Speedbooster the crop factor is 1.4x, then the lens you would use on your SB is 36mm to obtain the SAME DOF at the SAME distance, and you have to open up 1 F-stop. ( 50mm / 1.4 = 36mm lens on the regular Speedbooster ) You could also bypass the whole Speedbooster thing by shooting with fast Micro 4/3 lenses. I own a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens and a Samyang 50mm f/1.2 lens, both of these have Micro 4/3 lens mounts, and both are sharp corner to corner at full aperture. I mainly use these lenses for corporate interviews when when I want shallow DOF to throw the background out of focus. These lenses give me the same DOF as a FF 60mm f/2.8 and FF 100mm f/2.4 lenses, which is pretty shallow for video work, and work really well in small indoor office environments. Also keep in mind that this will NOT introduce any kind of distortion ( provided your lenses are low distortion ) as you are shooting from the SAME distance as the FF camera is.
I like your reviews cause the simple fact that you use the item for months before release a well though review. Kudos!!
Thanks!
Tom Antos Hi Tom, great video. What is the highest iso u would go to when filming in low light with the Gh 5
There are tons of gh5 tutorials and reviews, I've watched many, and this is one of best by far, thanks.
Thanx Tom.
D.
Nice! can you show us how you build Panasonic gh5 rig complete even with the 4k ninja monitor u use
I can go and buy it now lol
p.s. Really pleased you took your time with checking out the camera on different projects, before the review! Awesome!
This video is absolutely fantastic
Great Video! Do you recommend the Vlog option for the GH5 even in low light?
Hi Tom! I'm planning to buy the GH5 and an external monitor/recorder. What battery pack would you recommend (taking into consideration that I will be flying all over Europe)?
The Atomos Inferno he demos has clips for two batteries right on its back. It can continue to record with one whilst you switch out the other.
Tom,can u make a tutorial of gh5 and how to use it for film?
I really love your Videos, However, there are some Corrections to be made in this Video.
GH5 doesn't record 4K 60 FPS at 10 Bit, but at 8 Bit
10 Bit video recording option is available only for 30 FPS, or below.
Great videos and thanks, have a question? I have a gh5 i shoot in mov and 4k 10bit 24frame, but when i try to play back on my pc or mac from the Sd card, it wont let me view the video, is something wrong with my cam? what i am i doing wrong?
I would love to know your opinion abt Nikon D500 and D850 4k footages,. Their images look so pleasing and detailed to my eyes,..
Hey Tom where do i get the gh5 from Panasonic?
Worth noting, the 10 bit in 1080p only goes up to 60fps. Anything higher is 8 bit.
Yes, it's a limitation of not having enough internal processing power. Maybe we will get higher 10-bit fps when the GH6 comes around in about 2-3 years.
Like every time, and especially for this time ... a great, great, really great video !!!
Thanks Tom !
Excellent overview Tom. The 10 bit footage looks great. I have the Panasonic G80/85 which is good enough for me right now. The only thing I wish it had is the variable frame rate like the GH5. Great review and you have sold me, as I was in two minds about the Sony or the Canon 60D MKII
Lovely review. Please which Mic would you recommend along with the camera. Rode ntg2 or ntg4? Can't afford ntg3. Thanks.
Thanks for this excellent video!
1. Apart from the 4K 60FPS 10 bit feature, does
recording externally (Atomos Ninja Inferno)
deliver a better image quality than recording
internally?
2. What are your experiences with the cine d mode
(settings, quality, colour etc.)?

I used it with the metabones adapter and it worked without any problems
Can 60p footage from GH5 be recorded/played back in Ninja Inferno in slow-motion, or does footage have to be slowed down in post?
Hey Tom is that your little man in the video walking around. WoW I remember when you first showed him on your video. Time Flys
I had a question about the speed booster which exact speedbooster would I need to purchase to use with the canon glass. Tom, I was looking at purchasing a new monopod and head . Can you tell me what you are using in your video with the GH5?
good video as always.
btw, regarding GH5 cages, will the GH4 fit in them?

Thanks Tom! Will the Atomos Shogun also work as well as the Flame with the GH5? Also, how did you find the (absence) of the crop factor? Regards!!
TheJWC56 yes the shogun and other recorders will also work except not all of them can record 4k at 60fps
Hey Tom. Love your channel. But how do you avoid picking up the noisy sound from the Ninja Inferno when recording sound?
Do you use a very long boom mic or wireless mics?
Shark lav or other mics that are not placed on top of the camera. Always place the mics away from the camera and close to the subject. Thanks!
Thanks Tom.
Great video man! Looking to gear up my GH5 and this video was really helpful. Cheers!
Thank you Tom, very helpful video as always.
Question for you, with the speed booster and my Canon lens do I still have control of the aperture live while shooting?
Take care, Pete
what is best budget lens for G85/GH5 for filmmaking
Hi Tom can you please recommend me a speed booster to use some of my Nikon lenses?
Hey Tom. What cinema lense would you recommend for profile close-up on a GH5, that will NOT distort a person's face?
Cheers!
Hi Antos ! What is your codec and export settings for TH-cam ? Best, Ole
I know this is a long shot but is that covered bridge in Lancaster PA?
What do you think about this camera for photography? and what about the crop factor?
how would you shoot slo motion with the gh 5?
Can you use a speed booster with the vario 12-35mm Lens?
I just wanted to add that 180fps at 1080 is soft. Some say it is closer to 720 than 1080. It improves at 120fps but is still a bit soft. Still pretty awesome though.
the 90fps 1080p on the GH4 was super soft too..just not enough memory bandwidth to save that much data. On the GH4, people did 60fps 1080p and then used twixtor to slow it down more.
The GH5 probably has similar memory bandwidth issues at 180fps 1080p.
I think that's why some use the Atomos with the HDMI connection.
You do nice reviews. thanks.
What tripod are you using in this tutorial? It looks very versatile and solid.
I had the same question. I think it is the manfrotto monopod
I was admiring the monopod.
I think it's a Manfrotto, too. I'll look on his web site. He says all is 'splained there.
Which settings for to get top and bottom black space in the video. I mean movie screen- cinemascope style please
Thanks But What Part of the Video was The Custom Settings Part
Hi, Tom If u already own a G-85 , can u upgrade to GH-5 ? Can u please let me know ???
Regards from Stockholm!
Are you still on board with the GH5?
would I now go for the GH5s for low-light filming in 2019 if I mainly film on a tripod and MOZA air 2?
Do you recommend the new 12-35mm panasonic lens? I have the mk 1, and am reluctant to upgrade
How do you edit the 10-bit files?
Food for thought: Why did they not include 8-bit All-Intra options?
Great Review Tom! Do or can you recommend using a ND filter for the GH5?
Thanks! Yes here are my favorite ND filters th-cam.com/video/n03iiv1yOeY/w-d-xo.html
Would you say this is still worth the money in 2018?
The Problem i Am Having is i am Using a Neewer 7'' Monitor i Get a Signal OK/Fine But i Can't Figure Out How To Get The PLAY BACK From My GH5 When i Push Play On The Monitor i Get a Pop That Says ( This Motion Image Can Not Be Played ) Whats Up With That Thanks for any Fix Thanks
Great review!!! I really like your style. Keep inspiring. Liked and subscribed 👏🏽😊👌🏽
Are you still using this 5 years later?
Jak się masz? ;) świetny kanał
( you can even download the free FLAAT cine profiles for Nikon cameras to get an even better image )
A used D5300 sells for about $300 US on eBay right now.
GH5 is better. A few years ago BMCC was great but today there are better options. Like the GH5
wow thank you so much!! okay one more picks, how about GH5 vs BMPC vs URSA MINI 4K? sorry for the followup questions :(
The 1Dxii was released before this and could do 4k at 60p lol
but 3 times the price
Sir , I want to know which camera you have used shoot this tutorial ?
GH4 and GH5
Why am I watching this. I’ve had it for over 2 years lol
So where are you settings? You claim to have them in the review video, but I don't see any?
Thanks for the thorough review. I made sure to purchase the GH5 and accessories through your affiliated links.
What kind of SD card do you use on the GH5?
From Spain, sorry my english
Do you recommend Gh5 with leica 12-35 or Speedbooster and sigma 18-35 (for example)?
No money for booth 😂😂
I use the 12-60mm f2.8 Panasonic lens, probably one of the sharpest lenses I own
I think the 12-35
Hi Tom. What's tripod you're using here?
Vidualise Films ifootage monopod
Really? I mean the tripod at 16'49" ... it seems to have a ballhead also
Vidualise Films on that one is a manfrotto carbon fiber with 402hd head
Thank you for sharing
which lens use in this camera for film making
Does it overheat in hot weather conditions like the Sony a7SII does?
T Hogan I have used it in temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius in direct sunlight and had no Problems shooting 4K60P.
Thanks alot for sharing.
I REALLY LOVE IT
I loved the GH5, but the Noise even at ISO 400 in V-LOG just killed me! Even when exposed properly, any shadows or blacks are insanely noisy! Anyone else having the same issue?
Im trying to buy a camera first time and wondering what is better for wedding film this gh5 or cannons 5D mark 4?
I would watch wedding videos here on TH-cam shot with both, where the videographer shows "behind the scenes." Then see which one shoots as you do and then cost it out & see if you can afford it.
Do you think shooting VLog gives you a better skin tones on GH5?
Beyond Poy V-Log gives you more room to grade, skin tone comes down to how you grade
Hi Tom thank for this tutorial and good video. One thing I am curious,is it build in China?
I just want to say that woman in the thumbnail is gorgeous.
Yeah, seems to be his wife, and she certainly is pretty!
( i.e. f/0.95, f/1.2, f/1.4, etc... )
SewTubular i hear you about the shallow depth of field, but you need a bigger distance to the subject to get it.
( 50mm/1.28 = 39mm )
So the rules to get the SAME DOF at the SAME distance are :
1- Shoot with a GH5 and the Speedbooster XL
2- Use an lens that will match the FOV at the SAME distance ( FF lens / 1.28 = Speedbooster XL lens )
3- Open up 2/3 of a F-stop ( 2/3 F-stop for the SB XL, 1 F-stop for the regular SB )
If you are using the regular Speedbooster the crop factor is 1.4x, then the lens you would use on your SB is 36mm to obtain the SAME DOF at the SAME distance, and you have to open up 1 F-stop. ( 50mm / 1.4 = 36mm lens on the regular Speedbooster )
You could also bypass the whole Speedbooster thing by shooting with fast Micro 4/3 lenses.
Also keep in mind that this will NOT introduce any kind of distortion ( provided your lenses are low distortion ) as you are shooting from the SAME distance as the FF camera is.
would I recommend this camera HELL YES haha im dying. I just picked mine up yesterday. thanks for the video
you didnt mention if it has no crop when shooting in 4k. i have the 32-100 which becomes a 70-200.
at 4k with no crop it will be 32-100
There is crop when shooting in 4K because its a m43 sensor. So roughly 2X of full frame sensor
why did panasonic say it has no crop at 4k? due to down scaling the 6k image to 4k
comprehensive review! Subed.
Great! Thank you very much!
