I've watched a ton of Outback Wilderness videos as I am awaiting a special order 2022 in Geyser Blue. You two are the FIRST to properly explain the CVT changing positions. Not actually shifting but "ratios" as you say is spot on. I hate when people say FAKE SHIFTS because it is actually shifting, its shifting positions of the pullies. If it was a "fake shift" then the sound, feel and tachometer would not change. BONUS for also being the first to mention the tread height, I NEVER heard that before. You two are awesome, thank you for such a wonderful review!
Thank you so much for positive feedback and watching! We are both tire nerds, so I try to bring tires up in every video (without going into too much detail). For Subaru it is massively important to have everything with 2/32nd or so. This was actually my first CVT experience I think. I am about to upload the 2022 Civic sport and forgot to mention it, but it definitely did not feel as good as this one. Congrats on your new ride!!
I agree! The cooler seats and heated steering wheel would be a huge plus! For me I would take a heated steering wheel over cooled seats but only because I live in MI. ⛄️
Cooled seats would be a huge plus. The non premium sound is almost as good as the Harmon system in the 2018 we traded in. It’s pretty dang good. Not great but dang good.
This vehicle runs hot 🔥! It's -10°f right now and I haven't thought to myself once about the heated steering wheel. Don't have any experience with it in the summer but I also don't have experience with any cooling seat so I doubt I'll miss that and until I started watching these videos i had no idea it had a "bad" sounds system. I've got nothing but compliments on it even my self-righteous BMW friends were pleased and impressed. I think if those small features are going to hold you back then this vehicle was never for you in the first place
Awesome review. I was so happy to see how pleased you were with how it handled the offroad bumps - that is my takeaway after having 900 miles on my Wilderness - it rides INCREDIBLE off road!
@@Carsideration was happy to hear your buddy say it’ll go wherever his 4Runner can - I spent 2 months narrowing down between a 4Runner and a Passport, and this freaking WAGON comes in the picture and decides for me
@@MaJaGa86 haha! That is awesome. The Passport is another cool vehicle unless you live in Moab or are doing some serious off-road stuff I feel like the Outback is the right choice for most people (Unless wagons are not your thing) then the 4Runner makes sense.
Just hit 1K miles on mine, and I'm loving it. Supper fun and comfortable drive, and gets me to pretty much any trailhead that I need to get to. I'm 6'5" and I fit very comfortably in it. That increase torque also makes it a lot faster than I thought it would be. Really glad I went for this over the 4runner if only for the better mpg.
@@NobleSpirits89 I haven't totally tested it out, but it seems like this thing just FLIES. The look of it grows on me every single day. I think overall, it is a better vehicle than the 4Runner. Reliability is vital to me, so that is really the only area that concerns me. I bought an extended warranty so im completely covered thru 80k miles.
I’m driving a 2011 Subaru Forester now but I really want an Outback wilderness next. Heated steering wheel & wireless phone charger is standard in Canada on the wilderness trim. I’m happy about the front 180 camera but eventually, I hope Subaru offers heads up display & 360 camera…one day maybe :)
Nice review. One thing that is trivial but somewhat annoying is how everyone blames the mileage change of this edition on lift and tires when really it is more about the final gearing. Yes, all three affect mileage, but if you are going to throw out reasons, it would be good to explain the top reason, which is that the final gear ratio of this edition is not as high, which means that the top gear is not as much overdrive as it's cousins, which caps the potential for the higher MPG highway. It would be nice if Subaru compensated with a higher top ratio in the CVT to make up for it, or please God, a Dual Range transmission, which would add more weight, and also potentially lower MPG somewhat, but could also raise the overdrive back to where it should be, gaining that MPG back and more, and would also dramatically increase low end torque potentials at the same time. Databyter.
Great review! I just subscribed and followed your IG. Noticed the Indiana Tags. I’m currently in FL but from IN. Looking forward to your next video review! Keep it up! - Charles
Love your review man. Planning to get one of these soon and I can’t stop watching videos of them. Your review is one of the best I’ve seen so far, love the style of your videos….you’ve got yourself a new subscriber! 😁
Enjoyed the video. I had a 2017 Forester with the 2.0 turbo engine. I really liked it, it was quick also. Got T-boned by a woman who ran a stop light at 60 mph which totaled my vehicle. Replaced it with a 2021 Outback Onyx edition. Was gonna do the skid plates and all terrain tires thing; then they come out with the Wilderness. Have driven it; plan to get one, but having a hard time finding a dealership who can/will(?) order one without the sunroof in my area(NC). They made a decent trade-in offer, but we never got any further. Seems to be difficult to get them in this area. Sucks...
Dangggg! Glad to hear you are ok after that! But yeah, I travel to dealerships and some have them in stock and others don't. Right now new car supply seems tough but hopefully in a few more weeks things will get better.
Every Wilderness I’ve seen has the package with steering responsive headlights, but I don’t think I’ve heard a reviewer ever mention that. Does this one?
From what I can tell it is a standard feature. It was one of those things that I found out while driving but never found while researching. Thanks for watching the review all the way through. I know that is towards the end! :)
Great question. So, if your spare tire is brand new (of course) and your other three are brand new you should have no issues, as long as it is within 2/32.
@@chuckwalla2967 Ohh. Well that is where it is an issue or could become one depending on far away you are from a dealer or tire shop. You can drive on it if you are in a pinch but you would want to get to your nearest dealer ASAP

Super cool! I am the owner of this car and was lucky enough to get one of the first. 2022 models first rolled off the assembly line in Indiana June 14, mine (this car) was built June 17. I took delivery June 21. If you've had other Outbacks, you'll quickly realize this car is VERY different in every regard. Where are you from? Plan on taking it anywhere cool?
@@LifewithFrank Currently driving a 2018 2.5. And I love it. I prolly wouldn't have upgraded if the wilderness didn't release. We my wife and myself have owned 7 subies...this will be the 8th. @@teabag3854 NICE! My wife and I were in the same boat- we wouldn't have upgraded had it not been for this car. Subaru #4 for us, our 3rd Outback. Things I don't like- on the door there is this little tag copper colored that says Outback Wilderness. It's out of place and annoying. Unfortunately unless you wanted to reupholster the door cover, there really is no way of removing it. As Cameron said in the video, I think the back up camera is a little lacking as it's not real clear. This isn't 2005 ....good cameras are readily available; come on Subaru. The seats clean SUPER easy, actually one of our favorite features. They are also aren't hot and sticky. We are in northern Indiana and get humidity as well and it was also on our mind, no worries there. Another thing I don't like is that the center infotainment is not easily navigable. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it's not easy. Getting to the home screen isn't as simple as a 1 button touch, you can't rearrange anything, and getting to climate control when you get in takes what feels like forever. Subaru offers the star link option which can control most of the electronics from your phone for $140 for 3 years (I think thats what it cost) and I would recommend that. Unfortunately it's the only way to get remote start - another down side in my opinion. Outside of that, and as mentioned, this car is completely different and I think Subaru hit a home run with it.
@@teabag3854 Estes Park is fabulous. We visited that area 5 years ago with our Jeep Wrangler and had a super awesome time.
