I am a 74-year-old lady in GA who has wasted 3 years watching videos of weekend camping & wishing I had the courage to try it. Well now is my time. I’m going to try it next month before it’s too late. I have a 2018 Outback 3.6R and info, photos, maps, etc. + essential gear and simple, comfy setup with my rear seats down. I’d appreciate thoughts on one question- for overnight camping in my car, what’s my best safety measure if I feel threatened? Alarm system? Or other ideas? Thanks for any input and wish me luck!

My sister just got flipped in her Subaru Outback going probably 75 mph on the highway and slid a good 70ft (someone swerved into her back end). Yet she walked away with absolutely no injuries. Lots of car companies say they have high safety ratings but I have never heard of any other car that has so many testimonials to the accuracy of those claims.
@@ar12. Volvo and Subaru are definitely at the top of the safety list. When I look into buying a new family car they are the only two manufacturers I consider for top safety.
@@slandshark yeah definitely but I do believe Volvo is ahead in safety not by a lot but Subaru offer way better value vs Volvo being more luxurious and having better more powerful engines comparing say a xc60 to an outback or forester.
Glad you mentioned safety. We had a 2017 Outback were running through a snowstorm where the semi behind us wasn't able to stop in time. We were hit on a back corner and pushed through another car that we ended up totaling. Nobody in our car had any injuries even with an impact hard enough to bust out our rear windshield. As a bonus we didn't break a single bottle in the cases of beer that were on that back corner.
Even watching this video I felt more relaxed and soothed. This video is the best ad for any Subaru I've seen for people who like the outdoors - love how you took us on your trip and showed how the Subie fit into your day-to-day instead of just sitting down and explaining (although nothing wrong with that either)
Just wanted to comment that I enjoyed the video. I own the same subaru and have recently gotten into car camping. I appreciate your approach to car camping and laid back style of videos.
@@madisonmurphy4876 if you live out west, try to find a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land map and you can camp anywhere on that. If you live out east it's a bit more tricky but you can often camp in county, state, and national forests but you might want to check your local restrictions. Just try to find a sick trail and be mindful of landowners :)

I bought an Outback to use for camping as a solo female, for a safer option than my regular tent camping. I'm headed to the Blue Ridge mountains next weekend to test the camping equipment I've purchased. Thanks for the inspiration. I was hit by a drunk driver traveling full speed ahead, in my Impreza. The car was near totaled. I walked away and left for a vacation in Mexico the next day, with zero stiffness or pain. Love me some Subaru.
I have a '16 Outback that I drove across the country to CO. With the stock tires it handled really well in mountain conditions. Also pulled a small trailer - it was fair but then again it's not built for that specific need. Also - your music selection is superb in this video!

Having had more than 30 cars and many makes and models I’m now driving second Subaru Forester and have to say enjoying every mile,!! We have real winters with snow and frost and Subaru is the best for daily driving in all circumstances. Great ground clearance and 4 wheel drive and great visibility plus reliability and comfort!!
First of all, thank you for your service as a firefighter. Your rig is beautiful and if I decide to buy another SUV it will be a Subaru. I've owned my 2016 Jeep Compass for almost four years. It was my 2017 birthday present from my wife. I love it and it's been a labor of love getting it set up for overland camping which I started doing this past summer. When I worked in the mountains of southern California, 40 to 45% of the vehicles on the mountain were Subaru.
I just got a new Outback this year; it’s my third one. Everything you said about Subaru is true. Plus, they are a zero waste company, are dog friendly, and go out of their way to ensure you’re a happy customer. The only thing I don’t like is the gas cap on the passenger side. I also used to have a Jeep, a ‘79 CJ-5 Golden Eagle. I loved that vehicle, even if it only got around 13mpg at best. Anyway, you chose well. Enjoy your ride!
Thank you for the inspiration! You're young and male, which I find "society" accepts much easier than females flying solo at any age. I am currently pushing back that stereotype in my own way. I converted a 96 Dodge last year and have taken it out on several trips. I, too, and married and like to camp solo. I own a Subaru Outback and am now researching car camping so I can take it on scouting trips for camp spots in my van. Sounds odd, but I in love with the notion of camping with less. And there's nothing that makes you feel more alive than waking up in those frosty temperatures! My coldest night was 29!
I like traveling but kinda person staying at hotel, eating at restaurants. I have not done outdoor adventure a lot. I came across your TH-cam and encourage me to do outdoor camping in a car. It's an acquired taste but once you get the hang of it you'll never go back to hotels. You'll save a lot of money, it's a lot less restricting, and currently its a lot safer than a hotel. Nothing wrong with eating at restaurants, but I really enjoy cooking outdoors while camping.
As a fellow 4 year owner of a 2015 Green outback limited I can concur with those validations. And as brother career FF I can also concur with the resounding resilience of their construction.... To the point where I can share that hydraulic/electric Hurst Tools/Hilmatro cutters/combi tools will NOT cut through any of the pillars on a Subaru... Saws-all it is! Great content bro!
I have a 2018 2.5i Outback I bought to go beach driving down here in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Have had many "4wd's" and this AWD is one of the most capable off road vehicles I have ever owned. I have fitted under body armour and given it a 2/2.5" lift. Truly an amazing car. 👍

I’m a sucker for the Taco. Had a ‘19 TRD 4x4 with a Voodoo bedrack. Allows configuration for nearly anything you’d need. Bike rack, mountable water and fuel packs, bed/roof top tents, had an Axe and shovel mount, etc etc! Was 14-15 inches tall if I remember right. Could use the bed as normal! Not to mention the roof rack options! The storage inside the truck was fantastic too. Stored tools, gear, survival stuff and just run of the mill storage. Never felt cluttered and always had a spot for something.
The area you camped out in is absolutely gorgeous. I love the thought of being completely alone in a rural area away from our anxieties, just with nature. I wish I could find somewhere to go such as the place you camped in. I’d love to know where it’s located, so maybe one day I could camp there too 🏕✨

I had an Xtera off-road for 14 years, found out I’m not a rock climber. The only thing being used was more gas. I now have a 2019 outback, but Ibought a 6 cylinder, love it
I love my Outback. People hate that it’s CVT but the comfort, practicality, and safety cannot be beat for the price range. Long trips are easy and very enjoyable. I can’t go back to a short stubby car ever again lol.

I currently have 245/65/17 falken wildpeak AT on my outback (it’s the biggest tire you can get for the outback that I know of ) my average mpg is 24 so it’s not too much of a drop :) before these I was running the Yokohama geolanders AT which is a little less aggressive looking but handled snow, sand and mud like nothing even sharp rocks ! Anyway enjoyed your video and love the platform you built 👍🏼
The area that you live in is absolutely gorgeous! I used to live in Alaska when I was a child and I miss the Rocky Mountains. I’m currently living in Vermont and I enjoy it here because of the people and the rural areas but I definitely miss the Rocky Mountains.

Rather late to the video but you really summed up the reason alot of us chose a Subaru. I drive a 2017 Forester and I can't bring myself to drive anything else. I know it'll keep me safe and take me great places. It's a feeling no other vehicle could give me.
I have an almost identical setup in an Outback 2018 2.5i. Rear seats out, DIY 2" height sleeping platform with enough headspace to enter/exit on both sides, sit up and move around. Small cooking station at the back left. Bike rack, roof top cargo box and awning. My cargo box is on the driver side however and between that box and awning is a solar panel. My bike is a fat tire e-bike with mid-drive motor and a 16 Ah battery good for 20+ mi rough road/trail without me pedaling too hard. I enjoy your videos because I can really relate to everything, except that I don't film 😄
I just found your channel and I love it. My set up is so similar. I've got a 2020 with the awning, bike on the hitch, and plan on putting the box back on top soon for snowboarding and winter camping. Love your style dude
I got a 2017 (same color!) for the same reasons: great AWD, ground clearance and mine did come with tow package and I tow my Boston Whaler 130 with it. Gives me confidence on the boat ramps with AWD as well. Great to hear about the first hand experience with safety!

We've owned three Outbacks now. Outrageously good vehicles: solidly built, stick to the road & climb over nearly anything short of boulders. I've stuck like glue to ice roads that wound down a valley to lakefront cottages in March: every other vehicle (all of them "4 wheel" or all-wheel drive systems) ended up sliding into the bush where they were stopped by trees (ouch); all of them needed towing out. We didn't slide an inch. Good tires help too of course: for the Subaru the best snow tires I've found are made in Finland: Nokian invented snow tires in 1934 & still make the best there are. You can't do better. I've worked with EMS techs for years & had that conversation with them (what survives collisions best?), so can confirm your findings. Subaru vehicles are built to take collisions better. They're still steel unibody construction (rolled sheet metal) so not really designed yet to take side impacts. Not the way you could with Saturn's vehicles. Those used a steel space frame (like a rally car): since they'd committed to plastic body panels they had to hang them on something, so you got a proper frame. And Saturn reinforced the doors. Subaru comes close: they've overbuilt to perform way in excess of NHTSA requirements (safest rating of any vehicle in their class) but it's still a space frame. I think Teslas will equal or exceed this rating but since the demise of Saturn, nothing else does. And Tesla still hasn't built something with the space & carrying capacity of the Outback (Model Y is pretty good though). If you camp & need to haul gear, consider the 6 cylinder engine upgrade: you're still limited to pretty light trailers (1,500 lbs) so aluminum, but it'll pull that without blowing your warranty. If you need to pull more, sorry: buy a truck. Mild off-roading is fine (stuff you showed in the video); irregular ground surfaces & sand, mud, snow. Boulders not so much. Mechanically beyond reliable. If you drive into the bush you want something that won't leave you stranded. Outback is a great choice. You're right about the suspension: tuned for highway driving. If you want something more like a rally vehicle, buy the Forester. Slightly higher, more narrow (only an inch or so) & a fraction smaller. You can't tow with a Forester; not rated for it. But it's a rallying beast: nothing stops it. Foresters are entered in & reliably win rallies all over N America every year. If that appeals, Subaru will even sponsor you & (I believe) pay entry fees. And a very senior (older) Service tech assured me that good as the Outback is in build quality, the Forester is slightly better. Outbacks are made in a Japanese-managed plant in America. All Foresters are made in Japan. They just refuse to build anything less than perfect in Japan. So if you're rallying, doing a lot of off-road camping, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle for life (not just leasing new), seriously consider the Forester over the Outback. The Outback has a little more room inside, but it's close. The Forester has slightly better build quality, but it's close. Either way, Subaru builds an amazing vehicle.
There are 3 outback’s to every foresters in my weeklong stay on Lake Tahoe. What’s the appeal of the outback vis a vis the forester? I’m thinking of getting one or the other. TIA

Great video and endorsement. Looking to buy one soon. Something worth considering for the camping side of things is to reclaim the seating in the back and get yourself a swag to sleep in. They roll up and would take up.space in the back area. Get to camp and within 5 mins ready to sleep in it. When your done on your trip you simply stow the swag away at home until the next trip :). That way the rear seat area us still available. The swag can be set up under your awning for additional weather protection and most awnings now come with detachable sides and led light strip's :)
I wore the life out of my 2003 durango last year, was sad to see it go because I loved it. There was no way I could afford to replace it and found myself in a Subaru Crosstrek. Even though it is a lot smaller than I am used to, I love it, especially the fuel economy. I find myself wishing I had a purchased an Outback after watching car camping videos. I talked myself out of it when I was shopping because it looked too "wagony" for me but I may be changing my views on that. I am 5'4 but would probably still be cramped in the back of a crosstrek lol - thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this! I get very inspired. I'm considering copying your setup, but also making provisions my dog. It made me very happy to see that you actually wear a helmet while biking. I've had two serious bike accidents with head injuries. Without helmet I wouldn't be alive today.
I hear a lot of firefighters talk about Subaru safety. I've also heard some firefighter training buy salvage Subarus because they're one of the toughest frames to cut.
Thank you for your 'pros" break down. Our family just got an Outback. We are very happy with it. We'll be towing a trailer to accommodate all our camping gear. We are also getting the Thule Canyon XT for the roof. We'll see how it does.
Bought a older used Outback a few years back. It was a great car and regretted selling it. So now I just purchased a new Crosstrek Limited. Plan to keep it for a while. It's a great all around vehicle.
I'm looking to upgrade tires as the stock tires are pretty much at end of life, this is my main concern! my other concern is how is the ride on pavement?
Driven 4x4 Toyotas & Suzuki Sierra (Samurai). You can't have everything but compromise only. After driven an awd & suited to my needs. All-wheel-drive is all-round fun
Nice video! I've thought of modding my suby too and I agree with your point at the end. Im thinking for mine, a more aggressive tire, possibly underbody plate protection and a "come along" recovery kit to expand its capability without squashing its road warrior utility . What you can't drive in a subaru you can hike, bike or ski :) Happy trails!
I have a Forester with a manual transmission and the same engine, or the 2.5i. It only gets about 21 mpg city driving. For prolonged highway driving on cruise control I would expect it to get more like 25 mpg. The 2.5 boxer engine is more powerful than the majority of 4 cylinder engines which were typically only 2 liters. My old Ford Ranger with a manual could get 29 mpg highway. I had a pickup bed tent on that so that I could sleep in it at the parking lot at Lakeland Airways when waiting to catch a float plane to go canoeing out in the Temagami provincial forest of northern Ontario. For what it is I think the Forester is the perfect car. I got the base model with a canoe rack instead of a luggage rack. Married up to one of those big CAMPTOWN dome tents it would be the perfect truck camping combination. But for the time being I’ll continue making do with a 9X9 Eureka Tetragon dome tent or the Cabela’s outback 10X10 one pole pyramidical tent that looks like a civil war army tent. Supposedly it’s no longer possible to special order a Forester with a manual transmission.
Nice video and good insights. I'm a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 owner of nearly 15 years. It's finally got too much to repair on it. It was my third vehicle. Had a Chrysler Aries my family bought me out of college in 2000 and then upgraded to a 95 Ford Explorer XLT partway through college. And then around 2008/2009 purchased the GC. I had set my heart on a Toyota 4Runner Off-road/TRD pro. I want to overland and am going to own a 50 acre property passed down through the family. The GC had decent off road capability, was great for tailgating and camping, survived being sideswiped by a large box truck, and sat up high. So test drove a Highlander and 4Runner. Immediately hated the Highlander, but loved the 4Runner. I was going to try a GC, but they're more luxury SUVs now and Fiat-Chrysler is bad. May have to go give a Subaru a ride. Thanks again!

Having had more than 30 cars and many makes and models I’m now driving second Subaru Forester and have to say enjoying every mile,!! We have real winters with snow and frost and Subaru is the best for daily driving in all circumstances. Great ground clearance and 4 wheel drive and great visibility plus reliability and comfort!!
First of all, thank you for your service as a firefighter. Your rig is beautiful and if I decide to buy another SUV it will be a Subaru. I've owned my 2016 Jeep Compass for almost four years. It was my 2017 birthday present from my wife. I love it and it's been a labor of love getting it set up for overland camping which I started doing this past summer. When I worked in the mountains of southern California, 40 to 45% of the vehicles on the mountain were Subaru.
I just got a new Outback this year; it’s my third one. Everything you said about Subaru is true. Plus, they are a zero waste company, are dog friendly, and go out of their way to ensure you’re a happy customer. The only thing I don’t like is the gas cap on the passenger side. I also used to have a Jeep, a ‘79 CJ-5 Golden Eagle. I loved that vehicle, even if it only got around 13mpg at best. Anyway, you chose well. Enjoy your ride!

Thank you for the inspiration! You're young and male, which I find "society" accepts much easier than females flying solo at any age. I am currently pushing back that stereotype in my own way. I converted a 96 Dodge last year and have taken it out on several trips. I, too, and married and like to camp solo. I own a Subaru Outback and am now researching car camping so I can take it on scouting trips for camp spots in my van. Sounds odd, but I in love with the notion of camping with less. And there's nothing that makes you feel more alive than waking up in those frosty temperatures! My coldest night was 29!
I like traveling but kinda person staying at hotel, eating at restaurants. I have not done outdoor adventure a lot. I came across your TH-cam and encourage me to do outdoor camping in a car. Also I like your all set up and make things easier. Keep on watching your TH-cam and one day I would outdoor camping. Thanks for telling us all your tips 👍
It's an acquired taste but once you get the hang of it you'll never go back to hotels. You'll save a lot of money, it's a lot less restricting, and currently its a lot safer than a hotel. Nothing wrong with eating at restaurants, but I really enjoy cooking outdoors while camping.
As a fellow 4 year owner of a 2015 Green outback limited I can concur with those validations. And as brother career FF I can also concur with the resounding resilience of their construction.... To the point where I can share that hydraulic/electric Hurst Tools/Hilmatro cutters/combi tools will NOT cut through any of the pillars on a Subaru... Saws-all it is! Great content bro!

I have a 2018 2.5i Outback I bought to go beach driving down here in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Have had many "4wd's" and this AWD is one of the most capable off road vehicles I have ever owned. I have fitted under body armour and given it a 2/2.5" lift. Truly an amazing car. 👍

I’m a sucker for the Taco. Had a ‘19 TRD 4x4 with a Voodoo bedrack. Allows configuration for nearly anything you’d need. Bike rack, mountable water and fuel packs, bed/roof top tents, had an Axe and shovel mount, etc etc! Was 14-15 inches tall if I remember right. Could use the bed as normal! Not to mention the roof rack options!
The storage inside the truck was fantastic too. Stored tools, gear, survival stuff and just run of the mill storage. Never felt cluttered and always had a spot for something.
The area you camped out in is absolutely gorgeous. I love the thought of being completely alone in a rural area away from our anxieties, just with nature. I wish I could find somewhere to go such as the place you camped in. I’d love to know where it’s located, so maybe one day I could camp there too 🏕✨

We have the same Surly. I have a 2001 camry wagon camper. Just done a 2000kms trip this week. I love wagon camping so much more than the van. Its underrated.

I had an Xtera off-road for 14 years, found out I’m not a rock climber. The only thing being used was more gas. I now have a 2019 outback, but Ibought a 6 cylinder, love it

I love my Outback. People hate that it’s CVT but the comfort, practicality, and safety cannot be beat for the price range. Long trips are easy and very enjoyable. I can’t go back to a short stubby car ever again lol.

I currently have 245/65/17 falken wildpeak AT on my outback (it’s the biggest tire you can get for the outback that I know of ) my average mpg is 24 so it’s not too much of a drop :) before these I was running the Yokohama geolanders AT which is a little less aggressive looking but handled snow, sand and mud like nothing even sharp rocks ! Anyway enjoyed your video and love the platform you built 👍🏼

The area that you live in is absolutely gorgeous! I used to live in Alaska when I was a child and I miss the Rocky Mountains. I’m currently living in Vermont and I enjoy it here because of the people and the rural areas but I definitely miss the Rocky Mountains.

Started to look into Outbacks and Foresters recently for a more casual/outdoors/family vehicle and stumbled on your video. Rather late to the video but you really summed up the reason alot of us chose a Subaru. I drive a 2017 Forester and I can't bring myself to drive anything else. I know it'll keep me safe and take me great places. It's a feeling no other vehicle could give me.

I have an almost identical setup in an Outback 2018 2.5i. Rear seats out, DIY 2" height sleeping platform with enough headspace to enter/exit on both sides, sit up and move around. Small cooking station at the back left. Bike rack, roof top cargo box and awning. My cargo box is on the driver side however and between that box and awning is a solar panel. My bike is a fat tire e-bike with mid-drive motor and a 16 Ah battery good for 20+ mi rough road/trail without me pedaling too hard. I enjoy your videos because I can really relate to everything, except that I don't film 😄

I just found your channel and I love it. My set up is so similar. I've got a 2020 with the awning, bike on the hitch, and plan on putting the box back on top soon for snowboarding and winter camping. Love your style dude

I got a 2017 (same color!) for the same reasons: great AWD, ground clearance and mine did come with tow package and I tow my Boston Whaler 130 with it. Gives me confidence on the boat ramps with AWD as well. Great to hear about the first hand experience with safety!

One word...brilliant. Driving Scoobies for years, swapping my 2010 Outback (had for 5yrs) for a 2018 next week. Don't need newest/best, this will be fine. Fully agree with your views re: AWD/clearance/space etc. Also a keen biker (eFatBike now, getting old :-) Love the laid-back video style - no razzmatazz/hype. Keep up the good work !

We've owned three Outbacks now. Outrageously good vehicles: solidly built, stick to the road & climb over nearly anything short of boulders. I've stuck like glue to ice roads that wound down a valley to lakefront cottages in March: every other vehicle (all of them "4 wheel" or all-wheel drive systems) ended up sliding into the bush where they were stopped by trees (ouch); all of them needed towing out. We didn't slide an inch.
Good tires help too of course: for the Subaru the best snow tires I've found are made in Finland: Nokian invented snow tires in 1934 & still make the best there are. You can't do better.
I've worked with EMS techs for years & had that conversation with them (what survives collisions best?), so can confirm your findings. Subaru vehicles are built to take collisions better. They're still steel unibody construction (rolled sheet metal) so not really designed yet to take side impacts. Not the way you could with Saturn's vehicles. Those used a steel space frame (like a rally car): since they'd committed to plastic body panels they had to hang them on something, so you got a proper frame. And Saturn reinforced the doors. Subaru comes close: they've overbuilt to perform way in excess of NHTSA requirements (safest rating of any vehicle in their class) but it's still a space frame. I think Teslas will equal or exceed this rating but since the demise of Saturn, nothing else does. And Tesla still hasn't built something with the space & carrying capacity of the Outback (Model Y is pretty good though).
If you camp & need to haul gear, consider the 6 cylinder engine upgrade: you're still limited to pretty light trailers (1,500 lbs) so aluminum, but it'll pull that without blowing your warranty. If you need to pull more, sorry: buy a truck. Mild off-roading is fine (stuff you showed in the video); irregular ground surfaces & sand, mud, snow. Boulders not so much.
Mechanically beyond reliable. If you drive into the bush you want something that won't leave you stranded. Outback is a great choice.
You're right about the suspension: tuned for highway driving. If you want something more like a rally vehicle, buy the Forester. Slightly higher, more narrow (only an inch or so) & a fraction smaller. You can't tow with a Forester; not rated for it. But it's a rallying beast: nothing stops it. Foresters are entered in & reliably win rallies all over N America every year. If that appeals, Subaru will even sponsor you & (I believe) pay entry fees. And a very senior (older) Service tech assured me that good as the Outback is in build quality, the Forester is slightly better. Outbacks are made in a Japanese-managed plant in America. All Foresters are made in Japan. They just refuse to build anything less than perfect in Japan. So if you're rallying, doing a lot of off-road camping, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle for life (not just leasing new), seriously consider the Forester over the Outback. The Outback has a little more room inside, but it's close. The Forester has slightly better build quality, but it's close.
Either way, Subaru builds an amazing vehicle.

@@bawalmagisip1 I'd say a slightly larger passenger and cargo capacity. The outback is longer and flatter on the inside which makes it easier to sleep in. They are both great cars but I went with the Outback...

Great video and endorsement. Looking to buy one soon. Something worth considering for the camping side of things is to reclaim the seating in the back and get yourself a swag to sleep in. They roll up and would take up.space in the back area. Get to camp and within 5 mins ready to sleep in it. When your done on your trip you simply stow the swag away at home until the next trip :). That way the rear seat area us still available. The swag can be set up under your awning for additional weather protection and most awnings now come with detachable sides and led light strip's :)

I wore the life out of my 2003 durango last year, was sad to see it go because I loved it. There was no way I could afford to replace it and found myself in a Subaru Crosstrek. Even though it is a lot smaller than I am used to, I love it, especially the fuel economy. I find myself wishing I had a purchased an Outback after watching car camping videos. I talked myself out of it when I was shopping because it looked too "wagony" for me but I may be changing my views on that. I am 5'4 but would probably still be cramped in the back of a crosstrek lol - thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this! I get very inspired. I'm considering copying your setup, but also making provisions my dog. It made me very happy to see that you actually wear a helmet while biking. I've had two serious bike accidents with head injuries. Without helmet I wouldn't be alive today.

I hear a lot of firefighters talk about Subaru safety. I've also heard some firefighter training buy salvage Subarus because they're one of the toughest frames to cut.
I wish they would use the integrated crossbar roof rails on more models.
Thank you for your 'pros" break down. Our family just got an Outback. We are very happy with it. We'll be towing a trailer to accommodate all our camping gear. We are also getting the Thule Canyon XT for the roof. We'll see how it does.

I lived in Anchorage for 32 years and the outback was the most popular 4wd car there even though I never owned one.

Bought a older used Outback a few years back. It was a great car and regretted selling it. So now I just purchased a new Crosstrek Limited. Plan to keep it for a while. It's a great all around vehicle.

If you do end up getting more aggressive tires, I put Falken wildpeak A/T trails on my cross trek and didn’t really notice any major decrease in MPG.
I'm looking to upgrade tires as the stock tires are pretty much at end of life, this is my main concern! my other concern is how is the ride on pavement?
Driven 4x4 Toyotas & Suzuki Sierra (Samurai). You can't have everything but compromise only. After driven an awd & suited to my needs. All-wheel-drive is all-round fun

I've thought of modding my suby too and I agree with your point at the end. Im thinking for mine, a more aggressive tire, possibly underbody plate protection and a "come along" recovery kit to expand its capability without squashing its road warrior utility .

I have a Forester with a manual transmission and the same engine, or the 2.5i. It only gets about 21 mpg city driving. For prolonged highway driving on cruise control I would expect it to get more like 25 mpg. The 2.5 boxer engine is more powerful than the majority of 4 cylinder engines which were typically only 2 liters. My old Ford Ranger with a manual could get 29 mpg highway. I had a pickup bed tent on that so that I could sleep in it at the parking lot at Lakeland Airways when waiting to catch a float plane to go canoeing out in the Temagami provincial forest of northern Ontario. For what it is I think the Forester is the perfect car. I got the base model with a canoe rack instead of a luggage rack. Married up to one of those big CAMPTOWN dome tents it would be the perfect truck camping combination. But for the time being I’ll continue making do with a 9X9 Eureka Tetragon dome tent or the Cabela’s outback 10X10 one pole pyramidical tent that looks like a civil war army tent. Supposedly it’s no longer possible to special order a Forester with a manual transmission.

Nice video and good insights. I'm a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 owner of nearly 15 years. It's finally got too much to repair on it. It was my third vehicle. Had a Chrysler Aries my family bought me out of college in 2000 and then upgraded to a 95 Ford Explorer XLT partway through college. And then around 2008/2009 purchased the GC. I had set my heart on a Toyota 4Runner Off-road/TRD pro. I want to overland and am going to own a 50 acre property passed down through the family. The GC had decent off road capability, was great for tailgating and camping, survived being sideswiped by a large box truck, and sat up high. So test drove a Highlander and 4Runner. Immediately hated the Highlander, but loved the 4Runner. I was going to try a GC, but they're more luxury SUVs now and Fiat-Chrysler is bad. May have to go give a Subaru a ride. Thanks again!
