      You must not get out much. Subaru is the Chrysler of Japan. CVT failures, oil consumption, valve guide leaks, axle hub failures, cv axle failures, head gaskets. Subaru's are one of the reasons mechanics have well funded retirements.

    For someone who doesn't offroad consistently, this is the perfect mix of ability to offroad on mild terrains without compromising almost any on-road comfort, safety, and overall features. There are plenty of more worthy off-roaders out there at this price point, but I chose mine given that 95% of my time is spent on road, and it is indistinguishable from any other higher trim SUV in the price range, which cannot always be said for most more capable off-roaders. One thing that wasn't mentioned is that the audio system is definitely subpar. adjusting the settings help, but not what you expect for the price. Great review otherwise!

    Bought a 2022 Geyser Blue Wilderness last Thursday. I just sold our 2022 Onyx Xt and before that we had a 2021 Outback Limited non turbo and a 2021 Ascent Limited (I like cars). This Wilderness by far is my favorite. Way less lag. Tons of power and feels easy to get in with the added height. I do not hear tire noise compared to my Onyx Xt. If you are on the fence, just go drive one and you'll be owning one!

      I only have 60 miles on it so far. You need to let the engine break in. I find my mileage always gets more accurate after 800 miles on my Subarus. I have been getting 23 mpg combined so far but I've been testing out that 0-60 quite often lol. I'll update after 800 miles on the engine. I expect it to be a few miles less than my Onyx XT which I was getting 29mpg hwy and 27 mpg city.

    I have an Outback and like the idea of the CVT because it’s nearly “continuous” variability of your gearing but you’re right, from a driving perspective it’d be better if it felt like it was firmly in one gear.

    • @damilolaakanni
      @damilolaakanni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have preferred an 8 speed automatic transmission, but it's probably not possible because of Subaru's all wheel drive system design, and the unique engine.

    • @kenhoward3512
      @kenhoward3512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@damilolaakanni It's not because of their AWD system, but it IS because of their flat-four engines not being known for fuel efficiency. Subaru was criticized for relatively poor fuel economy for years before switching to CVT transmissions. By now, they have invested too- heavily in the CVT to change. I'd guess most Subaru owners are oblivious to transmission design differences and learn to adapt to the oddities of their CVT (until they are shocked by the potential $8,000 replacement cost).

    You should mention how the wilderness also has a different AWD system than the standard Outback. I also wanted the premium trim but ended up with a Limited XT; I couldn’t pass up the turbo, love the heated steering wheel and Harmon Kardon sound system, and don’t need the Wilderness features. My XT Limited with winter tires has no problem getting through 8” of snow and 2 foot drifts. Absolutely love our Outback. On a side note, the Forester wilderness does not get the turbo, making the Outback a unique choice.

    I just purchased a 2022 Outback Premium a few days ago. I really like it! I was previously in a 2009 RAV4 with the 270hp V6 engine. The RAV4 was a rocket, but the new Subaru is much more planted in the curves, not as squirmy going over road imperfections, absorbs bumps easily, has less body roll, and is much smoother overall. I’m still getting used to the CVT. It seems like I really need to spool it up to get an acceleration out of it, whereas the V6 in the RAV4 had much more torque down low.

      I just bought an Outback after testing both the Forester and Outback. Test both of you can. My take is the Forester is taller, but it’s less front to back room, and a shorter wheel base. so it turns a bit quicker and has a harsher ride, but interior height wise it feels very spacious. The Outback has more front to back room, a car like feel and longer wheel base so it’s very smooth and planted on the highway and stable at speed over road imperfections.

      Subaru is not capable of making a product for us that live in mountain areas. CVT's that keep the engine at redline just to get over a mountain pass. Speaking of CVT's, Subaru makes garbage transmissions that burn up due to off road use. No low range, poor awd performance, mediocre long term reliability. The Wilderness has a 4.41:1 final ratio vs the 4.11:1 in a regular outback for good start ability and off road grunt. But it comes at a price in fuel consumption 26 MPG highway vs the regular Outback of 33 MPG highway with the 2.5 Liter naturally aspirated standard engine. The forced induction of the turbo 2.4 Liter boxer engine for greater power (260 HP vs 182 HP) does not help the fuel consumption either. Power comes at a price. Especially now with American Bidenflation price of fuel.
    What I do like about the Wilderness is that X-Mode does NOT disengage above 25 MPH, like the X-Mode on the standard Outback.
    Note that both Outback engines are direct injected (vs the older port injected engines). So it remains to be seen if the intake valves will carbon up over time, like other direct injected engine intake valves do, especially on the turbo 2.4 liter engine.

    Ok, time to say this...You are suppose to have your drivers side rearview mirror adjusted to see down the side of the car and slightly to the lane next to you. Hence, your blind spot. The "B" pillar is never in the way to turn your head to your left to make sure a car is not right next to you. You are never looking over your left shoulder, past the B pillar to check your blind spot, that is what your properly adjusted mirrors are for. You should be able to see all around your car without having to sit up or bend forward in your seat.

      Regarding blind spots, imagine you're in the #1 lane changing to the #2 lane. If there is a car positioned laterally in the #3 lane going for the same spot as you in the #2 lane, you'll never see it using only your mirrors. Even with the mirrors adjusted correctly, it's impossible for a driver to verify lateral clearance without turning their head. Which explains why box trucks and 18-wheels that have terrible lateral visibility always feature wide-angle mirrors in addition to standard mirrors. As a motorcyclist I appreciate drivers who verify the lane is clear before merging...but the thick B and C pillars found on new cars make that lateral check more difficult to perform.

Hondas are in the same realm. I would never buy a vehicle with a Jatco transmission. They have way too high of a failure rate. I don;t mean any disrepect in this reply. In my group of family and friends there have been Jeep, Subaru, and Nissans that have all had to have Jatco Trannys replaced. With many failing before 80-90k, with some much sooner. For me, It will be a traditional geared transmission, or, in the case of my Honda, and eCVT, which is nothing like a tradational CVT. Alex on Autos does a great video on how they work. I appreciate your input. Unfortunately the only Subaru worth owning now is one with a manual until they become discontinued. I also fear DCTs. But I also don’t pick on them just to be a pain. My opinions are solely based upon the data I use within my company. In fact, my company vehicle is a 2019 Infiniti QX60 with a cvt. You are spot on with your analysis. Nissan had models that were more prone to failures. The Versa, Sentra and Rogues were the worst offenders. I approved those claims most often. Right around 2016 Nissan made major changes to their cvt’s and maintenance schedules. Transmission coolers, fully synthetic fluid, and most importantly 30k mile cvt fluid changes. These changes eliminated 99% of the Nissan claims I approved. In 2017-18 Subaru took the lead in cvt failures and has lead the industry in failures since then. Subaru, as you may know, does not require or even allow cvt fluid changes in their cars. The fluid burns up and the cvt’s fail at around the 60-80k mile mark. Toyota and Honda learned from Nissan and Subaru’s mistakes and made a quality unit. I’ve got 140k miles on my company QX60 cvt and it’s working flawlessly. Cvt fluid changes every 30k miles is the trick to longevity. I also agree with your take on DCT transmissions. I’ve processed hundreds of claims on Ford Focus’s with its horrendous dct.
