last place finisher last year was 9:06 so no it is pretty bad for the calibur of athletes at this race. i think this year there was really only that sub 8:50s pack and you were either part of it or not. If you were not, you were pretty much stuck in no man's land, watching the race a half lap ahead of your and getting distracted and unfocused.
German’s 4 flat 1600m, 8:34 3200 an hour later in daytime Sacramento heat in June with no real competition still has to be a more impressive performance

Personally, I think SINCE the year 2000, Ritzenhein is the best CC runner, but German the best on the track. With that said, Ritzenehin did run a 13:44 (for full 5k) on the track his senior year. The GOAT is probably Gerry Lindgren who ran 13:44 on a shotty cinder track, 8:40 indoors for full 2-mile, and 4:01, and MOST NOTABLY qualified for the 1964 Summer Olympics. Lindgren's times are all the more impressive considering this was nearly 60 years and the technology, understanding of nutrition, and training back then was archaic compared to the options and information athletes have now.

If you want to get really technical, Verzbicas raced in a pro race while Colin Sahlman did NOT run against professional or collegiate athletes in order to set a national record of 8:33 in the 3200. Completely and entirely high school, as it should be.
