In the late 80's breaking 10 was "good," but we heard about these legends running low 9's from the big cities. Then, one day, in the newspaper, someone broke 9 out West. Epic.
In 1973, we had Terry Williams and Jim Schenkel from Lompoc high school, Barry Williams from North Torrance, all running sub 9 in the 2-mile, regularly. In fact they ran sub 9 on the Sunkist indoor track that was 160 yards. In that same race, there was a Freshman from Laguna Beach High named Eric Hurst. He ran in the low 9s, but the next year he was running sub 9 on the regular. If you ran under 9:50 you could get your name printed in the LA Times, but if you were under 9, you got feature articles written about you.
@@JohnHoulgateI look up to terry as my old coach was in his team back then and I am from Lompoc as well barely at 10mins, they were beasts back in the day.
@@switch_kill_805yt4 The following Fall, I saw Jim Schenkel tear up a very challenging Palos Verdes course at the PV XC Invitational. I believe he ran 10:50 on a very hilly 2-mile course. No one else could break 11 minutes.
@@JohnHoulgate California, amazing runners. I was near Philly, thought I was fast until the Penn Relays. Jamacians. I think the winning PA state time was low 9's. The interesting thing is the 4x800 relay times haven't got much faster since 88. I just checked, within one second. Nationally, however, I do think they are much faster. PA, not so much. 7:46 was our time, lost by less than a second. Yea, we got our names in the paper....but it was Sports Illustrated that had a nice little section on HS athletes that frequently showcased great runner.
@@JohnHoulgate I’m trying to go under 10 for my 3200m this season and under 4:40 for the 1600, but yea they were crazy back then, my old coach talked about how they ran on “easy” days and it was hard. There training was intense
I feel for the one guy that didn't break 9 in this race. What's really crazy in the other 2 mile races at Arcadia had 12 more runners go under 9. Almost 50 High Schoolers ran under 9 in one meet.
Back in '06 only 8 of us broke 9 at Arcadia and people were in shock. AJ Acosta, who won the race in 8:51.30, would have been 30th here today and I would have been 2nd to last lol. It's unreal (but awesome) to see how deep the US has become in the 3200m!
Masterclass announcing. Didn't over commentate or repeat the same thing over and over, brought the energy when it counted and just a great voice for it
dude literally announces every meet i think ive watched from California. Dude is awesome. Always hyping up the events when needed and usually says some stats and big names with info on their recent races.
Another thing to consider is that Arcadia has so many runners in each event that they run multiple races. The 3200m is a big draw so this was only 1 of 6 total races, albeit this was the fastest. Another race had 20 more runners under 9:00, a third had 11, and a 4th had 1, for a staggering total of 69 runners under 9:00 in the same meet. Insane! And the winner Daniel Simmons and Ben Jaster (5th) helped American Fork dominate in the 4 X 1600m relay.
If anyone is from Georgia and remembers this really great runner named Kevin Graham, well he looks like Daniel Simmons. Kevin ran in the early 1990s. I forget which high school he went to but he went to Georgia Tech after high school.
I'm pretty sure that even a 9:10 3200m would have won any of the Arizona state championships back when I was in high school in the late 80's. These were all great runners at Arcadia.
Nah in Az our top Division 4 3200 runner(only a sophomore) is extremely fast in our state and in the region but at Arcadia he qualified for the slowest heat for the 3200. So it’s actually crazy the level of talent this meet brings together.
How is this possible. This is absolutely sick, unbelievable , incredible that high school kids can run this fast. I remember when I was in high school in Pennsylvania, this kid from Illinois named Craig Virgin ran an 8:40 2 mile and it made so much press, was written about in magazine, I believe in Sports Illustrated or Runners World I forget which, the author compared him to Secretariat in that incredible article. In my state of Pennsylvania the top 2-miler runners were running in the low 9 mins. But to see this where a great time of 9:07 almost gets you last place. Unbelievable. What am I looking at. The evolution of kids. I still run a lot 60 - 70 miles a week and even at my age I can run a 21 min 5k. I was in a 5 k road race last year and I got totally destroyed by a 9 year old, LMAO by like 3 minutes. 🤣😂. These kids nowadays are like bionic! I sure hope their talents transfer well someday to the international and world championship level. I'd love to see in my life time it said that the greatest distance runners in the world come from America not Kenya or Ethiopia . It could happen, even today the greatest middle distance runner in the world is from Norway not Kenya, Ethiopia of North Africa 😊
I was on the early end of the elite HS running (class of '01). We were a good team, until we hit states and had to race some dude named Ritzenhien. Didn't pay attention until I was watching the '08 Olympics and I'll be darned if that kid didn't go pretty far in the sport.
It's a miracle that none of them fell. I think they should run the full two miles. 1600m and 3200m are lame distances. Just make it a mile and two-mile. One reason for the 16/32 is just pure laziness. The powers that be in track are too lazy to measure out the extra 9/18 meters back from the regular start/finish line, and then have that be the starting line for the full mile and two-mile. Arcadia actually does that for the mile, so why can't they do it for the deuce? As for the runners, Daniel Simmons has excellent running form, with no wasted motion. The Utah guys get that extra benefit of training at altitude, as does the Montana runner-up. Simmons is more talented than any of those guys, and I think will have an excellent future.
Parra should avoid taking the lead in the beginning always see him try and die out he should try staying in the back of the front pack and slowly get up there
This announcer is not live time is he ? This is added later and edited in after results to give the impression the announcer is actually knowledgeable ?

I don't know what's crazier; having 7 runners break 8:40, almost everyone breaking 9 in one heat or Nathan Neil closing the last 1600m in 4:10
Both are crazy

Thank you for the full upload. Arcadia always hosting the most deep and exciting high school races in the nation.
fastest high school race ever
Did not know Neil was on that level with Griffith and Simmons. And he’s going to Washington, he’s on a good trajectory.

They all paced this incredibly. 4:22 first mile and 17 boys went under 8:44 for a negative split. That is mind blowing!
Absolutely insane race. Amazing job to everyone in this race.
Daniel Simmons is not only one of the most talented runners I’ve ever seen, he is classy, kind and an all around great human being.
Imagine running 9:09 and getting last insane
That was my time in high school and finished ninth in state, now I'm last in an Invitation race, just amazing!
Actually insane the level of talent here, can’t even imagine 30+ boys going sub 9 in one race
Every person in this race can win state in any state haha
Noah Valyo was sick, he sweeps Luke liming for NC
Amazing! Man, Nathan Neil is an absolute machine!

crazy how almost a s whole school, being american fork, can have almost a whole team go under 9
Couple of years ago Newbury Park actually did
California’s best…running with the big boys now. I mean running 8:47 gets you 23rd place? Geez.
Manny Perez of Cathedral L.A. 8:40 (10th) and Anthony Fasthorse of Ventura 8:45 (17th)
Great announcing!
Emmanual Perez Cathedral!!!
The race starts at just after 6:00 if you want to skip the introductory mischief.

Sub 9 is the new normal for high school runners.
this isn't some normal race. it's the arcadia invitational. probably the fastest meet for high school runners. its even faster than state meets

Crazy race. Only time ill ever get on runnerspace😂 (Arcadia tf athlete recording on the field)
Bozeman runner built like a middle linebacker. He ran a great race.
He looks that way in this field. I was thinking the same thing. The truth is he is probably 145lbs but looks like a monster in this crowd haha

True. Currently the middle distance records are set by Europeans. Quite interesting.
Even adding back 10 to 13 seconds for the superspikes, which you have to do, these times are just insane.

NATHAN ALMOST HAD IT
Needed 5 more meters
Don't think so. Simmons had an extra gear at the end. If anything he pulled away in the last 20m.
That is true, but still, Nathan was maybe a quarter second away from him. I am from Montana, and I was cheering for him
@@books2118 Yeah I get you. I was moreso responding to @Hebndkrn1
Bro imagine running a 9:09, which mind you could be a state record for a smaller state, and getting last by 10 seconds. Still mindlessly impressive!
55sed last lap
What kind of sunglasses is manny wearing?
There’s no way a 9th grader broke 9!!!
WATCH HIMM COOOOOK!!!!!!!!!!

yeah
No it was Daniel Simmons
no it was ryan crouser
Armando Duplantis cooked as usual
no it was me
imagine getting sub 9 minutes in a 3200 and getting 35th place
