    Obviously this isn't the end of Meta, I actually really hope that all of this pressure turns them into a better company.. because right now things are awfully rough over at Hacker way. Like I said I hope they can turn things around for the better before it is ACTUALLY too late.

      I hope meta recovers. I am feard of a VR future were Bytedance and Chinese company can track everything you do in VR. I mean since they are in China they are legally required to share all of there data to the Chinese government! TikTok is known for such issues. I mean the US is so near banning them from the market! That would mean everyone who bought an Pico now has a useless peace of ####. Facebook is way more stable and that way more save china is so unstable I mean as I write this china is burning they are on the werge of collapsing. But we'll we can only hope

    VR is always cool in my heart. :) It's changed my life. As someone who lives in the middle of nowhere and who is disabled, being able to put on my Quest 2 and fly around in No man's sky or have a sword fight in Skyrim, or any number of amazing things. It's really helped me and I'll never forsake it.

    I loved the phrase: " VrChat looks so good because the community makes every single asset" because it implies that the community knows more about character optimization and character creation than the people making the games and its true. Community is always a great thing like for example minecraft mods. Edit: Also my bad for generalising, I meant the community that has passion for the game and has brains to not do stupid crap and break everything. Not everyone knows what they are doing.

    • @Peglegkickboxer
      @Peglegkickboxer ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Except the community doesn't. Most avatars and worlds are hella unoptimized. Just about everything out there is very poor status. I've seen people load in causing the game to freeze for like 3-4 seconds because their giant file size on their casual avatars.

      @@Peglegkickboxer There are also a good number of people out there that make very well optimized avatars that are just as good looking as the unoptimized ones. The difference is that they have a lot less "bells and whistles" which most casuals are interested in because it allows more customization possibilities on a single avatar without having to know anything about the creation or uploading process. Either that or the creators of the unoptimized avatars just don't feel like taking the time to optimize their avatars, even though (from the little I've learned about it) seems fairly simple.

    • @miranda.cooper

    The idea of VR being "cool" is such a lame way that people from the outside look at Virtual Reality. The crazy part is there are so many creators/gamers out there that are complaining that games aren't "fun" anymore because they feel obligated to continue making content on the same things over and over again. Call of duty, fortnite, rinse and repeat. And honestly ever since I jumped into the VR field there hasn't been a day that I haven't thought about what's new in VR. I'm always checking the steam store for new upcoming releases, constantly doing more digging for under the radar games being developed, and for me that's what makes VR so exciting. Just being along for the ride and seeing how the industry is being built first hand is something incomparable to any other systems to this date. I fell in love with the tech and that love will only continue to grow as the years go on. Who cares if the cryptobros don't think it's cool, I never purchased a "f*ck to give" NFT anyway 🤣

If they think something is cool (like NFT cartoons), you know it's lame garbage. If they think something sucks (like Maker-style content-driven VR social platforms with zero monetization), then you know it's cool.

    I read one where someone was just saying the classic spiel of "All of the games look awful", just straight up showing how little research they did. They wrote an opinion piece with no sources to back anything up, and then it's just sitting there at the top of Reddit, influencing potential VR enthusiasts from getting into the hobby. Was essentially an article trying to bash VR into not existing anymore, and was infuriating to see. Their biggest point just kept coming back to "VR isn't cool and your friends will make fun of you".

    Quite happy about it tbh. VR will survive, I'm sick of Zuckerburg leading us straight into a dystopian version of the virtual future.
    Edit: Okay, guys, there's a difference between doing something for the money and doing something because you care about the industry, and then making money off of it. Valve cares about the industry. Meta cares about money. That's why Valve takes the time out to make the best possible product thinking about what people want from VR, while meta has a completely incomprehensible building tactic, reportedly throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Which is something Valve critiques. In Portal. Because they think that's shady business practices.

    VR is going to be amazing because of creative types, NOT engineering types. My wife is a 3D modeler, and the kind of environments she makes for her game company are simply astounding. The render from Meta is so newb, and "low poly restriction" won't cut it. My wife can make amazingly charming or realistic 3D models low poly because, well, she's a professional in that industry. Which leads me to ask: if Meta is so hyped up about the Metaverse, why aren't they stacking up the creative / artistic talent? Because that's how leaders in the space are going to win--they need to make it look increasingly immersive. Honestly, with engines like Unity, it's not much more work to take any 3D environment and make it VR ready.

    Once VR DOES become "Cool," I think it will be the 1 platform/medium that has the most dichotomy for the people who use it:
    There will be people who use it for business, for pleasure. For invention and innovation, or for military purposes. People who play retro-styled games, and those who play what ever is "hip" at the time. People who play, and people who just socialize.
    It's going to be VERY interesting to see how these groups are formed, and how they'll view each other. We've already established these groups already, but if VR *does* explode into true mainstream, then I'm fascinated to see how each group grows and/or shrinks.

    I joined in VR for the games. Boneworks, Half Life Alyx and The Walking Dead S&S. Just some escapism for the day. Not because of Meta promising some dystopian second life bs. Basically saying "It is okay to live in slums or in poverty. Just make sure you have enough to afford one of our Meta VR headsets and give us your data."
    I think realistically the only company that I think would be capable of a decent "Metaverse" is probably Valve. Just because they have the ecosystem that could probably flawlessly move you from social games to your personal space and to core games with minimal junkiness.
    I think VR still has a chance to become mainstream but the path of NFT's and Crypto are not the way. Cool social games and experiences like Boneworks/Labs, Hlaf Life Alyx and all the rest should be getting people interested. Not pump and dumps and Bored ape bs.

No one seems to want what Meta is selling, and we'll all be better off for it. I can't wait to see all of the people working at FRL who might start to leave for other companies, or to start their own projects. All that ill-gotten Facebook revenue might finally do some good once they're out of there...altho I will always question the standards and ethics of anyone who decided to work there, regardless of the shiny temptations of near infinite resources to pursue new tech.

    And as you mentioned it ended up lumped in with crypto bros and silicon valley nonsense, which gave people more suspicion.
    But even with the Quest 2's success, we haven't even gotten close to the level of ubiquity VR is going to have (even if the whole look and vibe of VR completely changes in the process)

    As an indie developer (if I could even be called that) the metaverse screenshot could so easily be faked. What's to say mark is moving around that space that he showed (aka locomotion controls, etc), what's to say his avatar moves as he does (aka my 'avatar' moving as I do IRL), what's to say that other players in the same space could even see those movements (aka if I lift my hand, you see my hand rise). Let alone networking / multiplayer capabilities.
    From my perspective, that could be a singleplayer environment with a 3D model of Mark posed properly in order to take a "screenshot" of the engine and fake a sense of progress / development.

    Great episode! Thanks. VR may not be “cool” (it is still rather geeky and for most somewhat of a fad) at the present time. But as you say with the right hardware, software, and environment VR should become amazing and mainstream. I thought VR would take off much sooner. When I first saw Tron (1982) and Brainstorm (1983) I was inspired by idea VR. Then Lawnmower Man (1992) and and Disclosure (1994) had me thinking good VR was just around the corner. I thought we would be at the level of Ready Player One (2018) by now. While we are close, it just is not convenient or user-friendly enough for most people. That said, we are soooooooo close. Also, Amazon and Covid has shifted attitudes about how we shop and where we work. Amazon has shown us that online shopping can be mainstream and it is surprising that Sears did not get the “memo” because they invented “catalog” shopping that, at the time, was highly criticized, much like Amazon was. Then Covid forced the population to embrace working remotely. Both of these practices were made possible by technology and have helped pave the way for the world to embrace VR. The question is if the world will learn to use the new technology to make the world a better place for all of if it will end up a distraction and merely allow us to escape reality rather than improve it. I’m sure it will be a combination, and hope that creating a better world will take the lead.

  • @UltravioletNomad
    @UltravioletNomad ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the problem with Meta and Horizon Worlds is that its pitch for the Metaverse, and its actual functions are at odds with each other. Theres a reason why they don't have legs, and its because like everyone has been saying, the metaverse is another social marketing platform and it must function as one. To do that, anything more than a headset and controller is already asking for way too much for a average user to use regularly and seamlessly, and seamless integration is whats important. They aren't competing with games or niche Second Life hubs, they're competing with cellphones and web domains, and to do that VR has to be as EASY to pick up and put down as a smartphone. The problem is Zuccs also touting fullbody tracking, facial expressions, haptic gloves, and livable spaces in his marketing. Regardless of WHERE the technology is at, those will always be complicated to integrate in a way that doesn't make the barrier to entry taller and the technical expertise necessary (for devs and users) more complicated. Hes already in a loosing battle competing with phones, but hes also shot himself in the foot by promising the enthusiast experience as well.
