Neos VR: The Untold Story of a Metaverse Tragedy

- Hello. Today I have a full on documentary of probably the most tragic story within the entire VR industry. Developers shafted, a $500,000,000 market cap shriveled into nothing, and a community left torn.
But there is still hope.
Actually something interesting I came across, Neos had a Quest/ Quest 2 and Oculus go version in development as well. Interesting addition. Basically though, crypto tore Neos apart from the inside out, no matter how compelling the technology.
Thank you to everyone that participated in my dozens of interviews. This is one of the largest "journalistic" videos I have ever done and it took a lot of work, but I hope you enjoyed it.

This story is really sad, but also a valuable lesson going forward- seriously hoping the best for the platform and its community because they're the most dedicated, creative, and passionate group of people I've ever witnessed. You told this story so beautifully. Amazing job as always, Thrill

I've been a Neos user for a couple of years and lived through the whole of this sad period. But Neos isn't finished and my friends still meet up every Friday night for drinks and onboarding new users. The latest thing we played with was a physics based full body saloon car. You have to sit, work the footbrake and accelerator with your feet, steer with your hands. The gearshift works, dash controls like indicator and wiper stalks, the tacho and speedo all work. 5 of you can sit in it and go for a ride - in any world - it's a prop you can spawn from your inventory. This is what the Neos community creates.
Wow. I think I'm gonna check neos out again. I got it but when I joined it was overwhelming and I couldn't even figure out how to get new avatars. I'm a nonprogramer and only know how to make a basic website via html codeing. Didn't relize the community was one where you just ask and they show you the ropes. Unlike vrc which was built for people to just hop on and play.

Where's a good spot to find users willing to teach. Most of the people I run into seem to ignore my questions or me entirely I had to learn to import my avi myself lol. At least the tutorial shows you some of it like props and stuff so that helped.not gunna blame the game for the players lol
I downloaded Neos a few hours ago. I couldn't believe the versatility that they practically hand you in a silver platter. As a creator, I can make and share practically anything I want within a single app. I was blown away to see even TiltBrush's features in there! It's a beautiful platform and I look forward to creating in it.
@Baxi Tabaxi Im a player who has been on neos a while, the new players are almost entirely all awesome and pick up the game relatively easily. Crypto is being phased out, and the steam build of Neos has no crypto functionality whatsoever (not like it matters, all the game mechanics are unaffected by crypto lol)

"Teaching people by hand"
You know, that is something incredibly special that I noticed with Neos and I couldn't put my finger on why it was so special. Whatever you do in Neos, everyone else can see as well. Want to show someone how to use the menu, you can make your personal menu viewable for the world to see as you guide them through step by step. To be completely honest, Neos feels like the social app that promotes reaching out and learning where VRC and CVR feels like you're tossed in and you just have to figure it out yourself.
I really hope that the Neos team can find their way again and expand this platform further than ever before, making it more accessible for less tech savvy users, improving the flow of the UI and so on. This platform is bleeding with potential and I think they would be making a huge mistake to let it die.
I find Neos too technical, for those of us that are not creators who just want a social platform to hangout with friends that is quick to get into ChilloutVR is a better fit, the game engine behind Neos is impressive though.
@@brooklynforge4591 One of froox's priorities was to make the UI easier to use but since the game is getting no updates for a while, it hasn't been improved yet.
Wow, that's wild. This almost has like a campfire feel to it, I imagine thrill in his 90's explaining the storied past of Neos, the first metaverse, to a mesmerized and captivated audience of tomorrow's youth.
Yeah! And it was amazing that the "this was _old vr_ " -line was only 6 years back. So you can be an old time campfire grandpa in vr space if you have been around for like 6 to 8 years, hahha. :DDD
Social VR Game*
Metaverse is literally terminology made up by Facebook. It's corporate bullshit.
@@xXRenaxChanXx Metaverse was coined in the 90's. Mighty impressive of FB to invent a term before the company existed and when Zucc was only 8.
I've spent 3,500 hours in Neos and personally introduced the game to well over a hundred folks that are now common players. This video has the somber vibe that NEOs should be approached with caution. To the 'ignorance is bliss' people, like myself, who just enjoy the game for what it has and offers day-to-day, there has not been an impact to what you can do and enjoy over the years of this production/ownership squabble. I don't see NEOs as "Destroyed" as the title claims one bit. It's exactly as great as it was. The biggest impact to all this was with a currency that no one ever used in-game, especially since Steam (which most people launch the game with) disallowed functionality with it (and I'm surprised this video didn't mention). It has no importance to players, so don't be deterred.

I feel so fuckin bad for Frooxius, i met the guy back when i first got onto NEOS and it's just shitty to see what happened to him. Thrill comparing the two to Jobs and Wozniak could not have been any better, i feel just as bad for Frooxius as i did for Wozniak.

The more time goes along, the more resentment I have for crypto and blockchain and web3, and the less patience I have for any of its evangelists. I hate how they're trying their hardest to ruin VR and they don't even care about it. It's all just about finding a greater fool to take from. It's the antithesis of what's awesome about VR.
Well that's a twisted opinion. Crypto and Blockchain technology has literally saved countries from collapse. It's has great potential and use cases. But like everything, it can be misused. Nfts in the current form are a great example.

Crypto isn't the problem. All markets go up and down. Even in this video they said it was at 0.23 before then it is at 0.30 after the dump. It is still higher than before. The problem is the shortsighted people and not preparing for the inevitable drop.
Cryptos should be nuked from orbit by the government. Make it all illegal. Send swat teams to mining farms. Seize cryptos websites. Wipe it off the map.
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for doing this piece. It really hit me in the feels. I'm a Neos user who's been around for a year and a half now. Upon joining Neos it quickly became my home and the only place in the world where I was actually accepted entirely as I am. It's also where I met my partner and made so many of my friends. It saddens me what has happened to bring Neos to where it is now, but I still have hope that things will move forward again. It's my home and I won't be abandoning it. So thank you for making this video and sharing Neos' story.
My first Neos experience was few months ago, before the Vrchat dumbester fire. I joined Neos with a friend, tried to port my vrc Avatar, got lost and a random Neos user joined our public lobby and saw me being lost porting my avatar, then he reached me how Neos and avatars work for hours. Neos has a lovely community.

I loved neos. The logix system is amazing to program with. Being able to see how the program is running at real time really helped me grasp the early concepts of programming.

The fact that even after the crash, the pump and dump, and really everything surrounding crypto in 2021, Carrol still wants to make Neos a crypto platform is insane to me. Like, he has to have seen all the issues with it both externally and internally. Really hope Frooxius gets control, it really does seem to be their child and I hate the thought of them losing that to their business partner’s greed
You hit it right on the head when you brought up greed. I wonder how much of the focus on crypto is actually just trying to find a way to monetize it with having to sell personal data as non-VR social platforms do
I hate how much Neos got the crypto treatment, but I can't say I'm surprised. From the small amounts of time I've tried to understand the crypto community, it comes across as an honest-to-goodness cult.

@@pingeee Sadly Karel just happen to be the local resident fanboy that had some buisness background and become the co-founder with 50% ownership and wrote himself in as the CEO, so cause of legal mumbo jumbo, they can't just kick him out even if Karel himself had little to do with the creation of Neos itself outside of the buisness and financial side of things

About 2 weeks ago, I joined Neos for the first time, When you enter the tutorial world you get the choice of either making it public, so others can join or keeping it private. I make it public thinking no one would join, but within minutes 2 older users joined and began teaching me about the game. Before I knew it, there were around 5 people in my tutorial world talking and teaching each other. Neos has one of the most caring and helpful communities of all VR applications.
I think the old title for this might have been better than the rename -- "The TRAGIC story of NEOS: The Most Advanced VR Game Ever Made" feels less 'Neos is dead and gone, here's a retrospective' than "How a Crypto Scheme DESTROYED the BEST VR Game Yet", which paints a picture that neos is dead and gone.
I also thought the bit at the end about "let neos die" was weird, who is this guy to say that the community should let something go? If they enjoy it, let them keep it alive. The gigantic community still hosts games of it, despite the servers being offline and the community having probably around a hundred members.

It's been a chaotic 9 months, trying to explain to my friends what Neos is really about has been really difficult since there are so many people who jump to the Crypto side of everything and always downplay Neos just because it was associated with crypto. neos was amazing . but noone played it it had no player base outside of furries trying to do stuff they couldnt in vrchat . it flopped because of lack of support and users and thats why they pulled the rug..

When you said "Let Neos die" I got some tears showing up, the story is very sad but I really don't want to see it gone, I'm having so much good moments on it

Letting it die could be a way to resolve the dispute, let the crypto side keep the corpse, and allow the people who actually do all the work to work on a new thing (similar in spirit, but no potential copyright issues) - most likely taking the entire community with them.

That's pretty much what will happen if karel doesn't leave.
It's him versus the devs and the only one on his side is Andrea since he directly hired and pays her.
If Karel doesn't leave, then the devs will just bail and try to make a new one taking what they learned with them, and he can enjoy trying to hire that shiny new dev team of yes men he's always threatening to hire to work on an empty abandoned game and code full of holes while everyone else follows Frooxius and the rest of the devs
I started playing neos before the fall and I've occasionally played after and the difference in the community has been night and day, the NCR craze destroyed something I enjoyed tinkering in, making friends, and supported financially
Also, Neos had to have a non-NCR version in order to remain on Steam, after Valve cracked down in crypto.
Thank you for taking the time to see all sides during this and give us an outside take on the state of how things got to this point.
I hope something beautiful or amazing comes from the lessons and experiences those of us involved, witnessed, or experienced during this entire endeavor.

Hello! Markus here, speaking from the future! You'll be pleased to know that of the four options you've put at the end, #2 has become the reality (though based on the community exodus, #4 might be down the road for Neos proper).
While Frooxius has relinquished Neos to Karel, Froox has formed _Yellow Dog Man Studios_ and has now released their crypto-free successor, _Resonite!_ You'll be pleased to know that there is an in-built tool letting you easily migrate all your goodies from Neos into Resonite. From what I've experienced so far (which is admittedly a small amount), it seems to use all the same logic and tech that you recognize from Neos, making the transfer virtually frictionless.
Here's to a much brighter future for the Resonite metaverse! ^w^
After my personall issues with VRC I have been looking for a replacement VR platform for years where me and my friends can just enjoy our 3D art and socialize in private, without having to mess with a whole array of extra software to even add inn our own stuff like having to have the entire unity suite installed. NEOS looked promising for a while but the whole crypto thing always kept me away. Resonite finally looks to be the platform me and my friends have been looking for this whole time.
Nice video man, i can tell you put a ton of effort and its clean, no nonsense and honestly I feel like you've done an amazing job with the storytelling. This is one of your only videos that I haven't skipped ahead because I was genuinely interested in every second, i wanted to learn about this game that if you hadn't posted this video I would never have known about. I really want to give it a go but at the same time before even trying it I can see that it's in a tough spot and I feel a sense of loss for something I didn't know existed 10 minuites ago. This sort of content is by far the best and is breath of fresh air in the YT climate nowadays. I really hope this video does well and shows you that high Quality, although it won't get as many views, makes up for it in genuine interaction with the people you actually want viewing your content. Anyone can go viral with a Clickbait video but quality is hard to find on YT nowadays. Thank you

Thank you for covering this, neos has been my home for 3 years now and is very special to a lot of us in the community, there's nothing like it out there. I hope neos can continue to move forward and not die out, I love the community here and all the things that are possible here and I would hate for that to vanish.
Man that's sad. I had a VR course on my university in early 2020 in Neos. I'm from Prague and we had lessons from Frooxius there since our teacher was a friend of his and real enthusiast into VR. And with the lockdowns it was like living in the future given that I had Oculus Rift and could actually interact with people.

I remember when I first got VR I got recommended Neos and gave it a shot, dropped it because of the complexity of the UI which seemed unnecessarily complicated to me at the time. If I had known that Neos wasn't just a social platform in vr but had built in tools for creation and coding and stuff that complex UI would have made so much more sense and I would have probably given it more of a chance.
Might have to give it another try.
Depending on how long ago that was, the UI has improved a fair bit.
It used to be completely godawful.

Thank you for making this! I had started what was meant to be a series of blogposts on my blog to talk about all this, but then work got in the way and I’m so glad somebody has created content about what’s going on. NeosVR is amazing and has a great community, despite the divorce between its cofounders and I hope it survives without its crypto component.
I’m glad somebody took the time to look deep into the story of neos itself. I’ve been using this platform for over a year and continue to do so after everything the community and the development team has done for me and many other users over the years. I refuse to let something with such an irreplaceable community and team just flat out die. They’ve not only made it a wonderful place for people to experience the next frontier in vr gaming, they have made it a place for some to even call home, have unforgettable memory’s, connections, friends of the highest caliber. Neos was the one game that restored my faith that legendary games can still be made and that I don’t have to be alone when I do play. To everybody apart of neos, Thank you for everything and the irreplaceable experience that I’ve been blessed to have. I still hold hope for its future and that more users get the kind of experience I got when playing neos.

The most tragic part of this to me is that crypto wasn't even needed to have an economy for Neos. Second Life does all the things Neos does, other than being in VR, and a full economy with a currency that can be bought and sold on an exchange for real money without touching blockchain or crypto at all.
I have played neos once, and it is an experience I will never forget. I was so surprised by just how many different possibilities could be made, I could have never imagined being able to create your own code and inventions and worlds inside of VR. It's truly something amazing and I hope that it will only get better as time goes on.

wow. I've been watching thrill (and other VR TH-camrs) for a while now, but never have I actually become emotional to a VR video. I really respect all the effort that goes into these videos, keep it up.
The interactive immersive theater project that I'm part of (The Metamovie: Alien Rescue) wouldn't be possible anywhere other than Neos. The platform is amazing & has allowed our team to achieve things we'd have thought impossible just a few years ago while working on other platforms (High Fidelity). I truly hope that everything works out for the best, one way or another, and that the Neos platform continues to grow & become even more amazing. The community itself is full of oh, so many wonderful, creative, supportive people! It's a pity to see things coming apart over money & power.

I appreciate how in-depth this video was, but Steam blocking any software including crypto from their storefront seems like a pretty big aspect to skip. But there was a lot of information here that was new to me, thank you for putting this video together!
This was not very in depth. It basically focused only on the crypto aspect of the situation and skipped most of the rest.

This channel has become so much more than a weekly news channel. Every time you drop a video like this Thrill, I set aside however long I need and sit down like I'm watching a movie. You should be insanely proud of these videos.
I mean I'm not without sympathy here that a company needs money to stay afloat, and the idea of a fully in-game universal currency that can translate to real money is really quite interesting and if done right raises some cool ideas, but you'll always have the troubles of what happened before, pump and dump or crashes could adversely affect the game and the company making it. Its a double edged sword.
On the other hand, I can't pretend to have a view into his head but its a tale as old as time... The guy is blinded by dollar signs in his eyes and is literally dumpstering the foundation for his goal, aka the dev team, by alienating them and becoming what amounts to nothing more than a bully and a nightmare boss. His ego and possibly greed is actively killing any chance he even remotely has of getting his vision of a stable and universal meta economy going.
You don't alienate and threaten the people who develop your game, especially one as complex as this one, cause you >wont< find a replacement if they walk out on you.
The positive is that its not over till its over, things will get better, which no matter what happens. A Neos without Karel will exist.

Thank you so much Thrill for putting this together. Neos holds a special place in my heart and I am devastated by the current state of everything that has happened. I first launched NeosVR in 2020 and played every weekend, even participating in the Creator Jams every Sunday, all until Fall of 2021, right before NCR spiked. Seeing the whole story of what happened and all my friends that I have made in game has they have been left in the lurch while the company sorts itself out.... It hurts my soul in ways that cannot be expressed... I really hope that they can solve this and not let this metaverse die as NeosVR is far more than a game for the avid player base, it is community and a family.

I always have to explain when I show my friends neos, that it's not a crypto game. People far from believe me, but then I show them what neos actually is, and how much potential it has.
Neos needs a lot of work, but the development gridlock is incredibly sad. Before the gridlock, we used to get updates every week. They were not small updates either! The passion that the actual developers of the game have is insane.
I still play Neos regularly, and build things in it but I am beyond sad things aren't going well, because they have a really good dev team. They want out of the whole crypto thing, almost every member of the actual community does. I'm still holding onto hope though!

I remember joining neos about 8 months ago, I joined during the decline of Neos and I had a hard time finding anyone. The people that still played it, played it because of the community. The community is such a beloved place, and need a lot more attention. Dued to the EAC update by VRChat about 2 to 3 months it only brought a few people back to Neos, I hope this game gets more attention in the future.

As someone who has been in neos for the last 2 years this recap leaves out a lot of the nuance in the situation and just blames everything on crypto.
It’s crazy watching these videos and learning at least a basis of an entire topic in less than 20 minutes. But really great video and the ending was beautifully made there aren’t too many YT videos that I will watch and after spend time contemplating wile listening to my box fan at midnight. Thanks thrill you and Phia really are the people that keep me engaged in the VR community and keep me trying to make new experiences within these platforms.

I’ve never heard of neos until now but I think your channel is going to pump hundreds of thousands of people into neos and that may help get neos fixed
I still have a few thousand NCR I got from participation in stuff in Neos. That would have been worth over ten thousand at its height, but figuring out how to actually sell cryptocurrency was a nightmare (multiple wallets and exchanges before finally converting it to real money) so I didn't do it during the short window where it was actually worth real money, so I now have a bunch of worthless NCR sitting around. At least I didn't pay for it.
Better than how I turned out. I tried to sell some back before the initial hype after the bHaptics event, since I thought it'd be neat to have the platform's currency fund something based on an event that happened there.
I lost all of it. My misunderstanding on how it worked resulted in an incorrect wallet type and... welp... nothing could be done about it.
I would think of it more of it returning to it's real value. I don't see a problem with an inbuilt token system but when you manage the company behind a platform with the crypto focus OVER the platform, that's when you have gone wrong! I seriously hope this doesn't have to go the fork or die route.
If they somehow can fix the management, i think NEOS could revive properly.
If it goes the fork route, I hope the crypto side would not be actively side-developing the platform but rather turn the crypto into an installable ADDON to the base, instead of being semi-inegrated by default. that's kinda what has happened, since the Steam version is platform only and website installer has the crypto functions enabled but the website is still presenting the platform as the crypto version as the MAIN instead of an ADDON.
@@FlameSoulis The fact that there is no way to get your money back after making simple mistakes like that is a major reason a truly decentralized cryptocurrency will never see mass adoption. Think of all the people who just aren't tech savvy and all the mistakes they would make. Should some 70 year old grandma loose all her life savings just because she doesn't understand how to use crypto? Of course not. Look at how prevalent scams like that exploiting people for money are with normal bank accounts and realize that those scams would happen 100 times more often if cryptocurrency were widespread. There is some MAJOR techno elitism among people obsessed with crypto and who think it's viable for mainstream use. They think anyone who looses their money to a mistake or a scam deserves it because they weren't' smart enough to understand how to use cryptocurrency properly
I never wanted Ncr, I got it because I donated in the past. I never sold mine either, I mostly just use it now to surprise people whenever they say they’re running low on cloud storage
Bitrue exchange has NCR listed. You can use that exchange to sell off your NCR into whatever else then sell that into dollars through coinbase for example. That's if you feel confident that you understand the process. If not, just keep it. If Neos does gain mass adoption as a VR platform for both social and business purposes then the token will greatly increase in value. Or it won't.

I love this game and this platform and its community. It does something no one else can do: anyone can be a developer here. Within a couple weeks I was scripting and creating new stuff WHILE IN VR and I had ZERO coding experience prior. I really do believe in Neos, and as a very regular player, I really don't think it's going away. Whether the split happens or not, I and most of the community is definitely staying with the real Neos and staying as far away from crypto as we can, even if it's under a different name.

neos doesn't just seem like a revolutionary VR application
literally no other game ever before has done what neos did, to even a comparable extend if at all.
The fact that everything and anything can be created and shared within the application in real time is something that doesn't exist anywhere else.
The death of neos would be the death of one of the most free and creative applications that has ever existed.
Also the fact that Frooxius is practically a solo genius developer adds a bit of "Ready Player One" magic to the mix. Nobody really knows everything he put in there. Any competitors from the corporate side of the market can't do that because tons of people are involved and the end product they make is super boring and clean and always kid friendly.

I played on this platform for 10 minutes and already have fallen deep onlove with it and am now building one of the most davanced club worlds in VR with the help of logic and an external software i have named "LocalLink". This was actually w project i wanted to do for vrc but vec didn't give me enough freedom to meet my expectations for what i had in mind. Neos is so much more open and thus it is way easier to work with external software and build one of the greatest experiences. Wish i could help from and the dev team out a bit with what is happening rn.

I was an avid player of a similar kind of game called Anyland; it kinda had similar issues with the devs parting ways and leaving the game in a kind of limbo state. Pretty much everyone I'd known through Anyland now resides in Neos and its really given them more opportunities to shine. They're all a really creative bunch, and I'm rooting for Neos to get through and come out the other side stronger and better than before.
Everyone needs to experience what Neos can do.
I've played Neos for over a year now and I still remember the utter joy and amazement I felt the first time I joined. having someone who was knowledgeable to show me around and finding a small and vibrant community where I felt safe and free really changed the way I see VR. the connections I've made on Neos have changed the course of my life and I am very grateful for it. I really hope to see it live on.

I had never even heard of neos before this video, so I downloaded the game and was blown away. So, so many people offered help and would sit and teach me for hours on end about how the game works and functions. I would get lucky to not be insulted in other games when asking for help, someone completely dedicating basically all their free time to help me for a night was something I never have experienced in a game until now. This game has way too much potential both in its development and its community that I would be devastated if it fell into darkness or turned into another lifeless money grab.
Neos has a feature where you can allow people to join while you do the tutorial, and I had two very nice, very helpful people teach me a bit about the platform. I would definitely recommend using that one.

I joined Neos after seeing this and I feel like this is a little too pessimistic. The community is thriving and the amount of creativity you see there is incredible. It's absurd how far ahead Neos is of anything remotely like it. Sadly, it's been almost a year since development stopped and we have no idea how long it will take until things start rolling again, but I have no doubt Neos will blow up (again) once all the current problems are solved
The biggest vulnerability any business, crypto, etc... Is the reliance on speculation. Wish I could say more
Thrill, thank you for putting this together and telling the story of NEOS. I myself, am new to the platform and had no idea of this backstory. I've spent a few sessions in NEOS and feeling it out, mostly customizing my own home world and filling it with VR photos of my friends. The platform is really impressive and I hope your video and those of others help bring people to the NEOS community. I would love to see NEOS grow and for it to get out of a rough patch with the developers.

@@MargoSizemore Yeah so the patreon money was going to paying server bills and feeding into the crypto. There were like 2 or 3 payments that went to a few of the devs but otherwise they were working on things unpaid. They've stated money isn't the issue for the dispute but it definitely highlights one of many issues they are dealing with.

I type this as I feel genuinely sad about a game I've never even played-- I think you did a really great job of presenting this video.
I've never logged into Neos and not sure if I will, but I think in the end this is a really hopeful story :) It shows what is possible for the VR community, and the innovation and progress it's helped to make in the community won't vanish even if Neos were to ultimately die out.

I think the grief Neos community users felt from that whole situation mirrors a bit of the grief people felt about VRChat recently.
The Neos team and community are phenomenal. Shifty helped me for 3 hours straight to get my first avatar set up perfectly without even really asking. They're all so eager to share the flexibility and wonder you can create with the platform.
They also helped us, for free, to put on a VR event in Neos simultaneously with VRChat for the most recent Furnal Equinox.
I cannot thank them enough and I really hope that things change for Neos. I remember them being pretty upset about the schism at about the time they were helping us out.
I don’t care what happens. I love neos no matter what and it is what has connected me with most of my current friends and how all of us have an amazing time together. Some know how to create intricate systems (me being one of those) but I know a ton a people who just set up an avatar and then socialized the whole time they’ve been on neos. I don’t care what happens in the future, the neos community is more dedicated than any community I’ve ever known. Even if it’s just the few hundred of us that have started years ago and have no intention of leaving, we won’t let neos die.
