  • In this video I take off my "Professional" hat and really call out where I think Meta's Metaverse has gone wrong- and right. This is not meant to be me trashing on Meta, but instead calling out where i think they can be better for the VR space.
Meta has recently laid off 11,000 employees, lost 70% of it's value within a year (a total of $700,000,000,000 of worth), and has had to cancel many projects- leading to Mark Zuckerberg apologizing that he "was wrong"
Really a lot of Meta's ambitions have been to artificially pump up sales of the Quest 2- which is fine, except it has resulted in their flagship platform becoming abandoned. So this video, whether you have a Quest 2, Quest, Rift, Index, or even if you don't have VR yet- lays down where they could be better in the future.
    I hope you enjoy.
    Much love
Also a new track as the outro, I hope you like it!

I have a personal dream setup that I am currently saving up to build, mostly for personal multi media/mixed media projects, and a decently powerful, open source (software and hardware) VR/AR headset is one of the main elements of that setup!
I’ve only used my family’s Quest 2 a few times for VR Chat, but I REALLY want to own a headset of my own! I agree with everything in this video, and you both are so inspiring for someone like me who is STILL looking for a VR headset!
I hope whatever the future holds, that VR can still be the computing system of the future! As much as I tend to get nervous about big corporations owning and running so many things, I too don’t want Meta to pull the plug on everything, and keep hindering their good progress with bad decisions! I hope they do see this video or at least get the message that they need to (and still can) build a safe, welcoming, open source, and community-first “metaverse” or something similar!
I’d honestly love to occasionally use AR glasses to play AR games and help make my day a bit more interactive! But I’d be over the freaking moon if I can use those same glasses to make a custom, silly, interactive multimedia world out of my own environment, and using my own custom art, animation, videos, and more!
      TL;DR:
Thrill, Phia, you two are helping me stay motivated and up to date on VR and similar tech, and I’m so excited for when I finally can own a VR/AR headset, (currently, I have my eyes set on the NREAL glasses. But I’d love a headset for full immersive experiences!) and I hope this medium can live on! Not just for games, but I really want to both see, and make, some VR, and AR movies! I just want to say thank you for keeping the spirit of VR and the like, alive! I’m rooting for you and all of VR and AR! Not just for my sake or your sake, but everyone!!!
      In your own words:
      WE R VR!

Zucc's focus on corporate VR doesn't make sense. VR main core audience is gamers. No one in the right mind would wear a VR headset just to sit in a virtual office 9-5. Sure, it enables 3D collaboration (useful for 3D modeling related), but there's a reason why smartphone/any flat screen are still the preferred way for communication. You don't even need to wear anything to communicate.
This feels the same as how wrong Microsoft was about tablet being the future, and Windows 8 flopped because of it. IDK who Zucc is trying to please with his vision of the metaverse, but this is just out of touch and ridiculously absurd.
If he wants to get more people in VR, he should've released Pro and Quest 3 at the same time, and make sure that people know what they are for; one is for Enterprise, and another is for gamers or casual users. Releasing Pro separately from Quest 3 hurts VR because it creates confusion among the general public.

Its true that they've thrown a fortune at it, but that doesn't mean they know what they're doing. They've NEVER been in touch with the user. They have always had two bottom lines: amass wealth (check) support NSA activity and global information dominance (check)... From Zuck's perspective, they're fully on point.

Witnessing the recent developments of VR especially under Meta has been the equivalent of being at a luxurious dinner party. Most of you got to the party early and at the table. You are LOVING what they're bringing out from the kitchen. You've seen a few big dishes come out and you're like "This is so awesome! They're still coming out with more plates! What's next?"
But then Mark is there, barely paying attention to the dishes being set down. He's got this cupcake that somehow got off to the corner of the room. Now look, hardly if any of the guests at the table have been saying they want desert. At least not now. What they got is what they're loving, and there are still some seats to be filled at that table. This dinner party is impressive and it can be a whole lot more!
Mark WANTS that cupcake though, but not for himself. He wants YOU to want it. He doesn't care if he's hired brilliant chefs and cooks. He doesn't care that people got into this party for reasons completely outside eating a cupcake. And now it seems like half that other food we were hoping for ain't coming. He doesn't care that you came. That you've been around. Just that he gets everyone to accept the damn cupcake, especially the people who haven't been caring about the dishes so much to begin with.

What I hate about Meta's "Metaverse" is that people in my environment hear about it and think it is synonymous with VR. And it is really hurting. I used to have people over and tell them "Want to try VR" and some would say "oh, yeah, I always wanted to try that" or some others have not heard of it and both were usually happy about the experience afterward. These days people will say "oh, is that the Metaverse thing that's apparently so bad?" and come in with a negative opinion of it, and that usually impacts their play because they will try to find "bad things" (framerate stutters, low resolution or low texture quality) and inflate them to "this is horrible, I could never spend my working day in this". The overall opinion is now negative instead of the wonder I would usually see.
Mark, please let this ecosystem go into the future dynamically and with the right hardware and don't force the future you see onto hardware that's not quite there yet. Also, don't lock this ecosystem down to be yours, because that will sink the VR industry, because Meta alone cannot do the necessary technology jumps to make VR truely great and maybe even indistinguishable from the real world.

Yea, I first tried VR and got hooked. and I love what the Quest 2 is capable of, I've tried it with PCVR, and as a standalone. I don't have a spare room I can dedicate to VR so it is nice when everything I need is I the headset. Just move some furniture and boom, a VR session is created. I hate the idea of having to set up extra parts to use an Index, or a Vive, especially because I want to bring VR everywhere, because I have access to huge spaces at work camp, and the hotel that are 5 to 10 times larger than anything I have at home. And all I could do is bring just the headset, and maybe a gaming laptop or PS5(for the PSVR2). I haven't gone in and bought one yet and the issues with Meta are partly why, I don't want a $500 paperweight because the headset will never again be able to connect and log in. the PICO 4 will likely be banned in my country when it's parent company TikTok is banned. Which leaves the Vive Focus 3 as the last standalone headset left. The most expensive VR set and the least supported, low selection of games. Perhaps with enough elbow grease we can "hack" the quest 2 to work without Meta or any login sever and it can be kept out of the LANDFILL after meta kills itself.

I feel the exact same way. I was an early adaptor, I absolutely loved it in 2016/2017. Whenever someone came over family or friends I would always show off VR and generally people were blown away. I was the core user and probably inspired several people to buy a headset. If content continued I would have no issue spending an insane amount of money to support it. But the content quickly dried up and now I barely play anything. The new Quest Pro was pretty much the last straw for me. A new VR headset dedicated to business users, wtf?? Zuck sees VR as the next social media platform. I don't see the issue of VR always being a niche part of the market. Spend the time and money making it more immersive, better graphics, innovate, make it fun. Instead we get to have meetings in the metaverse. I've had almost every headset, every top VR game, probably two years saying how great VR was, and spent 1000's of dollars. I don't regret any of that but I definitely feel abandoned.

Meta does great in sales, the entry price is fantastic, but they hoover up all the talent around them, and then no games get made. Retention is horrible, besides beat saber, or VRchat, theres very few reasons to put it on, it becomes a $400 paper weight. The issue is because most players ARE using the quest 2, most games have to be on the oculus store to have a chance at succeeding, with profit sharing with meta taking %30, similar to steam, but only for a fraction of the audience, most dont make it, or arent profitable enough comparatively to steam. I've gone years without putting the CV1 on, because there's just nothing to do. No one expects them to be perfect, but they arent doing very well for as large as they are. they can make money off it for sure, but for Mark being as big into vr as he is, he sure shoots himself in the foot a lot. This video is just amazing! I am just getting started in VR - but that clearly shows me that we are early with all the hassle that is involved in getting things going. Yes maybe in a couple of years the focus on "mainstream" might be a viable strategy. But at the moment (and probably even then) you should not forget about your strongest advocates and the people who are building alongside you. There is so much more to gain in the long run when everyone works together to create the best version of VR possible. With the widest variety of games. The greatest experiences for meetings. And the best virtual desktop setups possible. A lot of things will have a space in this new world. And I personally suggest we should welcome them all - and not let anyone behind.

As someone young who work for a tech and energy company where we do a lot of meetings trying to actually be productive I can tell you that the greatest way to meet is the most efficient. We are not running a kindergarten, the static profile picture or the video feed of your face will not only suffice it will be better. It is enough to put on the headset and wear that for a long time, adding more weight and hassle from goggles does not make anything better, and no, the virtual screens are not useful either because you can't imagine new pixels and real monitors cost less anyway
I think the concept is cool, I really enjoy games that respect the boundaries of the technology like beat sabre where you actually experience more immersion instead of worse like most VR games unfortunately end up doing in some way or another but if this ever get introduced as a work tool I'll look for a new job.

I don't remember the last time I played a non-PC VR game in my Quest. Honestly. Why should I (or anybody)? When I want to relax in VR I want THE best experience possible, period. Therefore I switch my PC on, I let it render the top-notch picture of my favourite game and then stream it to my VR using VirtualDesktop or Air Link. Why? Because it looks and feels fantastic! And because anything below that simply sucks.
And VR is not just for games, it has a huge potential for productivity too. Man... Meta's approach is soooooo wrong here! Who needs a virtual copy of the real world? Why? What for? We need new features and new possibilities, not the same ones again! Doing otherwise inevitably poses the question: why do it in VR if I can equally (if not better) do it in the real world without it? Do you REALLY want people to put it this way? Because they do.
What I personally needed for my productivity from home? An unlimited virtual smart whiteboard. I still need it big time! The proper one, which doesn't exist in reality. I can describe it in minute details, but it will be too much for a simple comment. Instead, I'd just put it this way -- I'm still looking and waiting.

@@maxjames00077 it’s one of the largest companies in the world, they are not your friend. No need to defend them when they’re obviously not doing something right, the stock has dropped 75% in value, over 10,000 employees were fired, reality labs is a total and complete loss of money with nothing to show, seriously over 10 billion dollars of investment with nearly no return. And they also said that there is not expected to be a profit on all that investment anytime soon. They provide no reason as to why what they’re doing is so revolutionary that it requires that kind of investment. People don’t care about vr zoom meetings, there is literally no market for that. People buy vr headsets today to do mainly one thing, and that is gaming. It’s the only thing that shows off what vr can do, anything else is a dumb tech demo with no real use. Productivity could be a thing a vr headset is used for, but at the moment it’s not viable or useful. 2 hour or less battery life is not a viable monitor, and a 1500 dollar price tag makes just getting 3 monitors a better and cheaper deal. Idk why you’re so quick to defend poor business practices that don’t benefit you or the company. It is a failure for both sides.

Back when the oculus dk2 launched, I had already been following the VR dev scene closely, and was obsessed with at least trying it out, to the point that I ended up making my own pcvr cardboard headset before even trinus and vridge were a thing. I had splashtop and freepie, and was using the OSVR drivers so I could send the 3dof data there. Eventually psmoveservice was acceptable and I made my own 6dof room-scale jank vr and started my journey through vrchat.
And I really hope that spirit of "Make, share, enjoy" stays with us as the industry grows, because none of what I talked about would have been possible if it wasn't for all the people that were obsessed with VR in exactly the same way. Games need to respect the limitations of the technology, the only VR game to hold its own IMO is beat sabre
if someone made a mech battle game where you are some kind of pilot might work if its simple
The split between VR and normal controls required to play it makes it a thing only for people like you that want that dream, you look past the reality, the limitations, and don't respect them and that in turn hurt the progress and reduce it to niche in a sense, most people will simply just have more fun playing traditional games as a result

@@Top_Cheeze Iron rebellion is exactly like that mecha battle, but it takes time to get used to the controls. I had my problems and stopped it after testing it and goofing around for 10 minutes. Being able to use the controls by instinct will take some time. You´re using a mecha after all. I still think it will be easier than mech warrior, which is a normal non-VR game. Iron rebellion works, and it works fine, but the controls still need their breakthrough like almost every VR game.
Games I played with controls that are just feeling right are Rush, Skyworld, and (most of the time) To The Top, but none of these games will ever become mainstream.

Thank you for being spot on in all points. I am 71 years old with a 64 year passion of toys, tech and traveling, My love of VR started 30+ years ago with unavailable, bulky, outrageously expensive experimental and military heads up displays. Fast forward to multiple SIGGRAPH shows and prototypes to the launch of the first Oculus which, for its day, was an amazing leap forward (I owned an Apple Lisa and the first Mac fish tank computer). As much as I was impressed with how far VR had come looking through a screen door was not a compelling immersion experience. With the launch of Oculus Quest 2 I decided to test the waters. I purchased a unit then 2 weeks later I purchased 10 more for my spa and wellness center in Bali to setup VR Salon for adults and education and gaming for kids. It was/is a game changer in almost every respect. I was aware when Facebook acquired Oculus and despite that - and I do mean despite - I went ahead and set them up in the captive Facebook universe - using VPN routers. All of which brings me to thank you for the very much needed "The Emperor Has No Clothes" honest and, to many, painfully obvious review of the slow motion Meta train wreck and missteps. With Pico launching (which we can get in Asia - sorry US) and Pimax Crystal (both of which I am preparing to purchase) I think VR will be fine and will survive the Meta Pandemic if in fact it occurs.

Seriously thought they really do need to decide to either be meta or quest. I remember being abruptly logged out from whatever I was doing just to get a message telling me to “make a meta account.” CHOSE A BRAND

This week I dusted off my trusty OG quest to play some games (I don't have a Quest 2 because I love the deep blacks on OLED screens as I play a lot of horror games and want full immersion, and I won't buy a Quest 3 if it doesn't have comparable deep blacks).
I couldn't believe how difficult and convoluted the whole transition of accounts experience was, from Facebook to Meta/Oculus (yes it went back and forth)! Still days after doing this, I have no idea what I did, I just kept clicking on things and filling out forms, just to get it over with, back and forth between pages. I have been a games developer for over 33 years and work as a technical artist (I worked at Argonaut Software for many years, even got to play with the never-released "Supervisor" prototype in the early 90's, the VR headset created for the SNES!)
I thought to myself, if I'm finding this difficult and frustrating/confusing, just imagine how this must be feel for people less technical or less wanting to waste this much time just to play a game. So I totally agree with the sentiment that there must now be a ton of Quest 1's, 2's just sitting there gathering dust after people trying to go through that process. Never seen anything like it.

For me, it's the exclusives (and Meta's fight to keep those exclusives) that bother me (in terms of games) AND the fact that Meta is just . . . not the best when it comes to caring about its users--not when it comes to privacy, ads, misinformation, etc. If Oculus were independent, I'd own one, probably. As it is, I prefer my Index, and I'd rather support PCVR. Though, I wish we had more options in the lower-cost-of-entry realms. In the US, it's basically Oculus or nothing (right now).

"it's the technology that's cool, not you"
Perfectly said. If the quest 2 had any competitors at all when I bought mine, I would not have chosen Meta.

Thank you Thrill for making this. I've always wanted to make a video like this, but I felt discouraged not having the platform. I feel like if anyone's voice could be heard, it would be yours. The VR space needed this

I know you're a Bonelab lover Thrill, and I'm so glad when you mentioned Meta's PC VR platform, you flashed up a TAL-9 from Robo Recall! As an indie modder, trying to keep one of the best VR games ever alive in spirit, and seeing hardcore VR enthusiasts like you show some love for RR, is awesome and heart warming!

When I first saw this video I knew what this was gonna be and honestly thrill hit a lot of points that mostly we all have been thinking about. I'd like to add my own as well. Vr is an amazing new thriving community but if we are all being monopolized by 1 company its like PS5 and Xbox you need competition. You cant just buy everything and expect it to work out and instead of trying to hone around owning the "metaverse" take in stride that you can't improve anything without having competitors GIVING you that inspiration to improve. Games are absolutely needed and please for the love of everything VR start advertising this to everyone not just a set group. Exactly like thrill said your advertising this with 1 aspect like whatsapp and this is SO much more. It can be our whole future. And here you are advertising it like its the next facebook and well...we know how that's gonna go. Please Mark if you see this video take in stride people are always gonna be there to see you succeed. Stop dragging everything down with you though. Its time for a change.

Nicely summed up, I agree with many points. To me it feels like development is going half the speed it could, as the focus of Meta is to come up with the most efficient way of monetizing the VR worlds, before going full throtle.

    @zacharyrinehart3921 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wow. So accurate.
Honestly, I'm not necessarily in this as a member of the core VR community Thrill describes, but as a believer in the Metaverse: Dedicated to the vision Zuck describes, but absolutely dismayed by watching him disown that vision with almost every move he makes. We will evolve into it, regardless of whether Meta blows up. As a recent computer science grad and tech lover, I just hate to see Mark bringing such a bad portrayal of what I genuinely believe is the next chapter of the Internet.
    Great video as always!

2:33 ding ding ding, exactly what he's doing. He's no longer the Overlord of the internet, so he's trying to regain his throne by getting ahead of everyone else and positioning himself as the Overlord of VR, which will eventually be the main portal to the internet

    Rewatching the video again xD
This is quite literally, the BEST video you've ever done, no joke.
For someone focusing on VR so much, and wanting this to become something in the future, I still gotta give at least credit to Zuck for making VR more popular to the masses. Wouldn't even hear about VR if it wasn't for Oculus (I was aware of Oculus before it was brought by FB lol).
I want to make a VR company in the future and seeing this video is giving me more confidence to not f*ck up in the future as he did.
So thank you Thrill for that amazing video, best wishes to you, and I hope I will be able to make my company a reality !

Great video and agree with everything. Ps, when you showed the VRchat treehouse world at the end and talked about supporting the core community it struck a cord for me, since 1001 the creator of that world passed away a while back. He loved VR and doing shaders in VR, Everything was definitely more exciting at that time in the VR space. I know he would have agreed with everything you said in this video. I only knew him through VRchat but he was a good friend and extremely talented. Rest in peace 1001

You are right to say and feel the things you feel in regards to this topic.
Honestly, if it weren't for VR I wouldn't have made the wonderful friends I have, met my life partner or found myself in worlds, places and creative spaces I could only dream of! And for all the bad I've experienced in VR, I have experienced far more welcoming, wonderful and beautiful things and created memories that will go with me till the day I turn to data.
I hope your words reach those who need to hear this. And I want to thank you for your raw emotion in this. Your enthusiasm in VR and VR related news, the gear to experience it and the passion you radiate has changed more lives then you realize. Never stop being you.

Love the video. I have spoke couple people from Meta, it was interesting as they see things the same way as you and I. I agree with you 100%. When employee feels the same as user that something is missing or something is wrong, you know, you are on correct track. Meta should have open up the code and let normal IT people work on it. Something like open contract. I have been working on couple thing as cause the code is locked to the core you cannot test anything. It sucks.

Great Video. Couldn't t agree more on everything. My old Oculas is chilling in storage. The industry is not ready. Meta isn't ready. They lost sight of the endgoal and got tunnel vision on the wrong things. Ready player one and SAO could be so much more than just movies and shows.
Will Mark see this video? - I hope so.
