      *Update* So the sticks came in the mail and I put them in and if you actually pull up on the the joy stick after it's installed a little bit, they are just as good as the original. It makes it clicky again and not mushy.

      Mark Ferris I thought about doing something like this. The hole is tiny, how did you get it in there? Did you push it down with a paper clip or something of that nature?

  • @TheAlphaFlamingo
    @TheAlphaFlamingo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    To anyone who is wondering, the cheap knock off joysticks aren't that bad. You just need a small bit of sandpaper and blu-tack. The issue is is that the stick itself most of the time is to small and catches on the edges of the controller, the stick can also clip that solder because of it. With some fine sandpaper you can file down that part of the plastic to create a small enough notch to where it'll miss it and emulate it. The Blu-tack you can put into the insert of the joystick, a very small amount of course but it will prop the stick up enough to where it won't catch and it'll feel exactly the same as an OEM stick.

    Because of this video, I learned that C Sticks, regular sticks, nunchuk and Wii U sticks are all the same standard. That's amazing! Immediately went and dug out a crappy bootleg controller to steal its stick and I replaced my worn out C stick WITH ANOTHER MAIN STICK! Ha, it's just so cool, I've always wanted that. Feels good too!

  • @Back2Zack
    @Back2Zack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +144

    The increased height is actually a thing. If you've ever heard of fps freaks, its a brand that makes caps that go over your controller's sticks (normally Xbox or ps) that increase the stick height and theoretically give you more precision. So the nunchuck stick may increase your ftilt, utilt, and turnaround precision. Obviously tho practice is going to give you the most benefit but you may notice a difference.

    • @SRMom
      @SRMom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Happy this comment is here, wanted to mention that as well. While it's not a big difference, it is one to keep in mind. Generally, if you use a lot of movement tech like perfect pivoting or dash dancing, a shorter stick makes that much easier, where the longer stick makes precise spacing easier.
      Maining Robin in SSB4, having my movement be a numchuck stick is great since she doesn't have a ton of movement tech and I value being able to place aerials exactly where I want them. Playing a spacie in Melee however, I'd want that shorter stick for easier dash dancing in neutral and easier wave dashes.

    • @Back2Zack
      @Back2Zack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My thoughts exactly. I think once I get my thumb speed a little faster (which is my biggest struggle in melee) i might switch to a longer stick to improve my pivot uptilt consistency.

    • @ErikSeastead
      @ErikSeastead 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      keep in mind that you will have to move the stick faster in order to get smash inputs on the stick, including making it harder to get dashbacks

    The sticks are actually giving that "mushy feeling" because they aren't made tall enough (or the rubber grip on top of the control stick isn't short enough) so it rubs on your case. A slight error in their molds apparently either made the peg hole too deep, or the stick shorter. Putting a tiny sliver of paper or something really small pushed into it to remove a tiny bit of room for the peg fixed that problem for me.

    This video helped me out so much. I bought my controller from JJGames a few months ago. The control stick came without grip and I wanted to replace it so I bought the "low tier" caps from ebay. The control stick was really hard to spin around the edge and was very grimy feeling, I assumed it was just the stick box. After watching this video I immediately realized that it was the stupid ebay sticks. I replaced them with nunchuck sticks and now it works like a charm!

    Kinda related topic.
    Let's say you have two identical controllers: each with 1 busted analog stick and 1 working analog stick.
    The official Nintendo controllers use the same component on the board for both the C-stick and control stick, so after a quick desolder on both controllers, you can replace the motherboard component itself to give yourself 1 great controller and 1 bad controller. I did that as one of my first soldering jobs ever, so it's the kind of thing anyone can do given the right tools.

    I found a solution for replacement control sticks that do not click when you move fully in any direction. You need to increase the height at which they sit on the white peg. I did this by wadding up a tiny piece of a plastic bag, putting it into the hole under the stick, and then inserting the stick on the white peg.

  • @ScribeAwoken
    @ScribeAwoken 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's worth noting that the stick on the nunchuck also gives you a bit more leverage and thus makes the stick feel a bit more loose. I use one on the controller I use for Rivals of Aether, and it's pretty nice, though it's really weird when using it for Smash 4.
    And even though I haven't tried it out yet myself, I've also heard that Playstation 2 controller analog sticks make for a good alternative.

    All of this information is great and very well organized! I'm a big fan of the way you layout your gamecube controller videos. It's super good for those who are looking into making adjustments to their gamecube controller but don't really know what they are looking for.

    The cheap knock off ones you talk about first have that mushy feeling I believe because they have a straight up and down cross pattern internally, meaning the plastic on the bottom will press against the plastic side bits of the stick box. The OEM Nintendo thumb sticks have an x shaped cross support in them. That's just my theory tho, I can't PROVE it.

    Man watching this video got me super excited since I have an ancient third party GC controller made by GameStop that was overall trash but the sticks were amazing, but as it turns out the sticks in those actually can't be put on a regular GC controller due to the completely different shape of the hole in the bottom of the stick. Thankfully it's smaller and not larger than on a regular GC controller so if I really wanted to I could file it into the correct shape.
    TL;DR if you want replacement sticks don't buy a Gamestop brand GC controller.

    FYI on those first Low Tier sticks that have the 'Mushy' feel that doesn't click, I found a solution to at least make them manageable.
    The socket that slides onto the stick-box is actually a little too deep. If you put just a little bit of paper into the hole, and then slide it on the stick-box, it gives it the extra height it needs to not totally suck.
    Still not a perfect option obviously, but I was able to at least get a couple of my raw-stick, C-tier controllers a 'casual-friendly' refurb.

    Old video but I’d like to mention some things about these chinese buttons no matter what color or if they are replica knockoffs:
    -Left stick: is prone to being too short, a fix would be to get some tin foil and put it in the whole and use a small tool( tiny screw driver or whatever) to push it in. Fixes it just fine and wont cause the stick to slide off the stick box or anything like that. Unless you put too much.
    - C stick: may have too much left over plastic in its hole making it tall and giving it a scraping/grinding kind of feeling. just get some small tool to scrap it out and you’re fine. Best tool would be a metal/wood/plastic filing set and they can cost around $8 for a set. these are very helpful for the next problems
    - C on stick being upside down: this can happen a lot with the laziness that is chinese made items. use that filer to make a original shape on the other side( that little nub on the stick box) and slide it in.👌🏼
    - Z button: then if you buy button sets the Z-button needs some filing for it to work, as in fully removing the long peg and filing the smaller peg to be thinner. hard to explain but you get the point. If you have a wavebird and notice the Z button looking different from a gamecube controller, that is pretty much how it’s gonna look like after your filing.
    Nothing we can do about it but if you want to use your controller again you have to do these. Nintendo doesn’t constantly make controllers so we need to preserve them before the become extinct. I do know of people trying to make replica montherboards to be identical to nintendo’s but i dont know when that’ll be finished and ready.

    I've tried the nunchuck stick, it is bad for people who hold the control stick with their thumb only, but if you're one of those people like me who holds the control stick with their thumb and index finger then it's a pretty good replacement.

    I recently bought colored gamecube sticks from a vendor called Zedlabz, and their analog sticks are pretty decent and they fit/work well...however the C-stick didn't really work too good since it felt like it would grind against the inner parts of the controller. So if anyone is looking for colored sticks or just replacements, you could check them out if you wanna be cheap. However you're probably just better off buying a controller from Ebay and scrapping it for parts

    I was quite lucky to find a GC controller straight out of the box from 2002, I had it tucked away and found it recently after going through my old gaming stuff, playing on it is absolutely fucking sexy, the L/R shoulder buttons glide so smoothly, and have a sexy click for a digital press, the left stick feels so smooth, but it has a click for every gate corner and it feels amazing to dash forward and then wavedash back, it's the controller I use for tournament play, and practicing, I feel bad that this isn't the standard, but that's just how it is :c

    the mushy feel can be solved. you have to put a little piece of paper into the hole on the bottom of the stick so that when u put it on to the controller it lift its up slightly so no contact is made with the controller and the rubber to get rid of the mushy feel

    I personally love the taller sticks in nunchuclks because they are smooth in the center and i like that, also I have really poor sensory in my fingers so the taller sticks provide easier fine input at the price of longer travel times. This does help me in melee and pm but its a much bigger benefit in SSX games. Just wanted to make that clear because I assume most people here are exclusively interested in smash performance.

  • @ToeM8

    I hope this helps someone. I go through analog sticks like crazy. my thumbs must just be destructive. lol. so I brought 5 pairs of the zedlabs sticks thinking they would work as replacements.. but I have that issue where the head of the analog stick hits the body of the controller, and feels 'gummy' when playing. My solution was to cut a small piece of a cotton wool bud, and stuff the inside of the analog stick fitting so that it was permanently more raised off the board. Now, the only contact with the controller body is the neck of the analog stick . works good.

    I bought a wavebird once that had these replacement sticks in it. I wasn't very happy about the non-clicky feeling of the stick so I decided to file down the bottom edge of it. I kept doing it until every direction was clicky. Certainly no where near as good as the OEM sticks but better than the feeling before. It's too bad there isn't a vendor that makes sticks that are halfway decent.
