    I've recently bought a 1999 Vmax, and I gotta say I really like the design of all of the engine, it's so practical and nicely thought out for working on it, besides it looks all so neat and nice and accessible. It also feels rock solid and of highest quality. Can you imagine this design is from the 1985s or something? They don't make them as solid as this anymore sadly...
    Best bike I've ever owned yet. I went from VFR800 (non Vtec) to ST1300 and now Vmax and I love it!

    Sean have you attempted to install the webcams 81-781 grind 539 or 81-771 grind 933 on the Vmax 1700 yet?

    Thank you for the help. Just finished setting my cams back in after changing out the head gasket. The book is not clear on a few things (like what holes to line up. I was hoping you could tell me the torque for the 2 bolts in each cam holding bracket. My book says nothing about how tight to put those.

    • @one2dmax
      @one2dmax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There should be generic specifications in the back of the manual for the various bolt sizes. I go by feel but not necessarily suggested for the average guy to do.

  • @danielleblanc5067
    @danielleblanc5067 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Almost done. And your Video helped me out a lot. Do you know the torque number for the 32 bolts in the cam shaft caps with the dowel pins??? My book doesn’t mention it and I don’t wanna close the engine without being sure.

    Thanks for the video!!!! Is it interference engine?

    • @one2dmax
      @one2dmax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if you have the cam jump timing. This is a very rare situation though.

    Sean, does valve clearance increase or decrease when engine warms up? I measured .003 on 2 intake valves and trying to justify NOT adjusting them... All other valves are fine. thanks. 92 Vmax

    • @one2dmax
      @one2dmax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically clearances will get tighter with heat as the metal expands. Also these engines tend to get tighter over time as wear on the valves shifts the stems closer to the camshafts thus reducing clearance

    Hi Sean, thx for very useful videos!!! Its a great job. Can I remove the VMax crankshafts without removing an engine from the motorcycle frame? THX ....

    • @pickuo580
      @pickuo580 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can. I had problems with poor acceleration , turn's out that front side timing was not good. So I set it right with engine in frame. You have to drain the oil and coolant fluid, remove the carbs, gas throttle, cooling, radiator with rubber shield and plastic shield with electric components.

    Hi, great video. A few questions, was that chain worn out? I mean it looks like it should have had a link removed or replaced completely? I ask because it looks like the chain tensioner is really outward not sure how much longer it can compensate the slack..? I am no specialist just a wannabe mechanical engineer :) and owner of 2001 Vmax with 48k kilometers on board and am thinking to check the chain and maybe readjust or replace. Great work!

    • @one2dmax
      @one2dmax  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tensioner comes out a long way with new chains and there is still a lot left to go on these

    Hi Sean, how to fix a backfiring Yamaha v max1200??

    • @one2dmax
      @one2dmax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to dermine what the cause is. If you recently replaced the cams or had them apart this could be the issue. Otherwise it is likely a CDI or Carb issue.

    Vmax cams for my venture 1300. Good idea?

    • @one2dmax
      @one2dmax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not worth it unless you also swap on a set of Vmax heads. If you'll do both you will get a nice power increase. I'd estimate at least 10%

      @@one2dmax ok thanx for the quick reply! I think I'll just do the vmax rear end for better 2 up in the mountains. Thanx for saving me the money. I love these yamahas I have an 83 std venture also with the second gear problem. I got a transmission out of a 91 1300. Going to tackle that soon. Hope your business is doing well.

    I am going to pick up a 1985 Vmax with a little over 11,000 original miles when I take it all the test drive will I be able to find out if it has the second gear problem? From watching Vmax videos I keep hearing about a second gear problem could you please explain what that is I would really really appreciate it before I drop my money on this bike.

      Any year and make of motorcycle can have issues with the trans. 2nd gear is the most challenging gear to get into quickly since it has to pass over neutral. You will want to warm the bike up before running it hard but you want to shift quickly and firmly at the redline and see if the transmissions stays in gear or if it skips or kicks out. Other gears can do it too but 2nd is by far the most common. The original 85 trans used extended teeth to engage and lock into gear while the recall replacement and subsequent years used conventional gear "dogs" to hold. Though they recalled this design in the Vmax that same gear dog drive stayed with the Ventures through the early 90's with no recalls. A lot of the durability depends on how you drive it. The Vmax tends to be ridden hard!
