- In this episode, we take a look at one of the most legendary motorcycles ever made. A Yamaha VMX1200 (V-MAX)
This one has been stood for a number of years, and despite the owners best efforts, it wasn't possible to get it to run correctly.

That's a great tip on using a torch to check the rubber for holes. 👌
So great to keep it technical and leave changing brake pads to other channels. Love it.
Jim, your content is second to none, always so informative and presented really well. keep them coming mate.
Much appreciated
Enjoyed that,no frills fixing,thank you.
Torcha test, love it. use Red Rubber Grease to hold diaphragms down (Boss says i cost him a fortune). The number of folk that forget about compression tests on bikes (4 stroke) that have been stood and just "clean" carbs and hope for the best. Oh and forget to flush the tank out too. Reminds me of a gold wing we did earlier this year. Got the carbs off and on time down quite a bit with that one. Never seen so many jets and little holes, had to be careful stripping and storing the bits with that and the manual (Honda one not Haynes) was with me all the time. Good for reminding folk to use brake cleaner NOT Carb cleaner (not good for paint and rubber) for the quick and dirty vaccum leak check. As a rule I will compression test, ign timing - spark quality, valve clearance check BEFORE carbs on most "runners" Do i see a 400/4 in the background??????
Yes, it's a 400 four, well spotted. A couple of videos are coming soon. Thanks for the comments, and have a great Christmas 👍 🎄
All the best Jim to you and family. looking forward to the 400/4 vids got one in bits to do atm also one just for top end work. both an making a "manual" cam chain tension adaptor as did to mine late 70's just a M8 bolt with the end turned down to go down the tunnel front of barrel under that cap. you will be well aware of the shortcomings of the std system. I used to put a bit of pressure on the top of rod as i released the lock bolt to stop the tenon slacking off and rubbing the chain on the tension er pin. so now with the bolt mod i can do the tensioning with the bike hot at idle and just remove the noise. Put 400 super dream front end and back wheel on 2 of my old 400/4's@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV
Loving the videos Jim, keep them coming 👍
Great video Jim, wishing you all the best for your channel, you deserve more subs.
Fingers crossed!
Mental bikes..I remember a mate spinning the back wheel inside the rear tyre on a burnout when they first came out. Crazy power and crap handling. The real hooligan bike.
Excellent upload! I discovered your channel today and subscribed so I'm looking forward to exploring past videos. As a home mechanic it's going to be great watching and learning. Thanks for your efforts 👍
Look, Squirrel!
I love how the camera also went to pan over.
Love the max! Have had pleasure and pain working on one . My friend has been getting one back on road for the past 16 months hopefully it gets through it's MOT this week
Yes love the new style of content. Anything that makes it easier for you
Best opening 30 seconds to any of your videos ever 🤣🐿
😁
My V max runs perfectly and hasnt
missed a beat since i bought it
2 years ago. 1991 with v boost. R
Gday Jim - As a motorcycle mechanic myself here in Australia, i agree your content is very informative and great to watch.
Thanks Mate 👍
Man, I missed these!
They really don't make them like that anymore, Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙏
Love that torch trick. have a lean condition on a aprilia Pegaso that has not run for four years will have to check the diaphragms .
I used to ride a VFR750 and I loved it. V4's are great.
Great content and good to see your workshop in the wider shots , I always fascinated to see other people’s workshops as well as the informative fault finding you always walk through
Thanks 👍
Ss long as the customer is happy!
i am
Love your videos and how you get the bikes running right, but for this bike. I'd suggest that if you want to separate them and go any further it's actually not hard. Just unscrew one side (top and bottom stay plate) after you separated them in half, this makes for easy alignment. This also allows you to get into both well all 4 coasting enrichment diaphragms and check them too and clean. Yamaha also has the part for the net filter and needle valve assembly very easy to install or at least clean with qtip and polish. They and the filters and diaphragms especially get nasty. They have the needle valve assembly and cap for the needle valve and the diaphragms they're both expensive but needed my bike that sat for long time the diaphragms were shot! The net filters clogged and the needle valve assembly was pitted and had corrosion. But leave half the side of the stay plates screws in and simply align back don't clean the stay plates where the screw marks are. 😊
But believe this that I'm nothing like you that's for sure I have nowhere near the experience, tools, know how, of bikes period. I just have a 95 Yamaha Virago and I'm having running issues. I don't know bikes but with the computer, book, and YT videos I can do some things. But nothing like you like now people are telling me even though the cylinder in the rear I'd think would be cylinder 2 they're saying is cylinder 1 and the front cylinder is cylinder 2..It seems I find in my 2 books that the front is cylinder 1 but in another it's saying or seems like it's saying the rear is cylinder 1 smh. 95 Yamaha Virago 535Special
Superb!!! Keep em coming , how about a workshop and tool box tour video??
Might be nice to see an update with what the customer said after you've returned it to them.
Top work👍🏻
its my v max and it rides great, thanks jim for sorting it out for me. well chuffed
Enjoyed that 🙂👍 Sounded sweet after your work, job done !
It's definitely got beans but instead of giving it some rice or potatoes you should try giving it the herbs
😁
Well, believe or not, you've inspired me 😅
Are you sure! 😂
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV Definitely. I want to repair bikes when I grow up. ( I'm 37 btw 🤣).
Great video, love this stuff.
great vid jim, love the classics.
Damn that diaphram torch tip could be like a lifesaver. I have a 94' xj600 and I can not get it to run right, idles alright(bit moving) but in partialy trottle it bogs.. Not that hard but You can hear it.. Whrn You give it a bit more trottle it runs like a clock. I bougth a kit for the carb. But I will look after the sliderubbers with a torch.
Windy beans Jim...that may you smile.
Another cracking vid! The Vmax isn’t my bag but still enjoy the content 👍
Sweet turn around 💪
saw the crank case in the background when you were fiddling with the EXUP and wondered if we would get to see it.
😁 Well Spotted.
Got to love a VMAX .
Good video thank you .
Yes great video
Just love these videos keep them coming top man
The positivity means a lot, Thank you 🙏
Switched mine to efi and added nitrous no more problems.
Awesome! Great Top Tips 👍👏👌
Another quality vid. 👍
I love Yams I've got an fjr1300, high mileage at 75K but its runs like a dream. Recently greased the linkage at the back as know this can be a problem. Other than that they are great bikes!
Really enjoying the frequent uploads Jim, also particularly fun as I’ve spent a bit of time spannering on EXUPs and VMAXs, familiar territory.
Is there a likely cause of the coughing through the carbs on that cylinder? I’ve had that before but never felt I’ve accurately diagnosed it.
great vid
VMAX is great, still looking into every barn to find one. 😁😁
😂🤞
😂 suppository. Maybe you mean repository? Great videos please keep them going 😊
That's the word 😂
Loving the content.
Look squirrel..... pmsl
You’re a brilliant mechanic but mate, there’s a squirrel running in your shop.. Look up
Mate love the channel 👍🏻any ideas on a zxr750 runs fine until you give it some the try’s to stop but will get you home it’s not the carbs because I have put a set off a good runner and no difference ?
Secondary ignition 🤔
I have put a second hand one on but who knows if it’s any good 🤔
Look Squirel 🤣
I'm only 30 seconds in and the video is getting a LIKE for the "squirrel" comment😂
Hi, have you ever done any videos of the honda vtx 1300. Regards the carberetor. 👍
Excrement tuned needs Jim spanners.
Doing well buddy. Never seen so many videos on this channel in such a short time.
What was the big ON / OFF flick switch for on the bars?
And also great content wish I could afford to have you come check the bike out as also has wide open throttle hesitation from 6-7000 rpm.1/2-3/4 throttle runs like a train?
I have a problem with an ST 1100 carby that sat over the covid period. Have been in and there are brass plugs and jets that won't budge. Any tips? That bike is the closest thing to a cruiser I'd enjoy owning.
Hi everyone,I have a Yamaha 2000 R6 with 24000 miles on.when using choke bike only runs on 3 cylinders, once off choke it runs sweet on 4 again!...any ideas
Did it get fixed? What was it?
temperature indicator seems doesn't work, isn't it?
Ciao ;)
Vmax, great in a straight line, corners ………. ummm 🤔
2 very useful Top Tips! Deffo be using those, thank you, Jim. Enjoying all this content, too.
Have joined the discord and looking forward to using your suppository.
😂😂 Thanks Mate 👍
