You gotta love that theme song.
Those first three things should not be considered imperfections. Limitations foster creativity, “weird” doesn’t inherently equal “bad,” and these things combined together give the show its charm. The performances aren’t “cheesy.” They get the job done well enough. Anything can be sincere given its context.
This was the best version of Spiderman if you ask me. Paul Soles was the best Spiderman voice and had the best background music ever for any show period!

JK Network Plot Twist, the show was actually a drama about Rhino feeling disconnected from the boys and learning to find himself outside the group, while the group mourns for a 4th person in the party wondering what they would do without their fellow brethren. Big Brain 🧠

That spiderman show was responsible for making an entire generation of kids come straight home from school. Parents loved it.
This was basically Marvel's answer to the 1960's Batman show.
not quite..Batman was prime time and had to also appeal to parents...Spiderman came on very early Saturday morning when parents weren't watching TV...

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how an animation studio will seek to create a hit show and just when it happens they put more effort into doing everything possible to sabotage it (reducing the budget and quality). The same scenario occurred with the "Johnny Quest" animated cartoon.
I love '60s Spider-Man. The voice acting of the actor playing Spider-Man even though Spidey sounded like a middle aged man. The weird plots, the psychedelic visuals and I loved the jazzy, catchy and cool music.

When I was a kid growing up in Canada they played Spider-Man and Rocket Robin Hood back to back and occasionally the "Shared Art" episodes would sync up and both Spidey and Rocket Robin would be battling the same evil green bug villain on the same afternoon! I think technically that's Marvel's first shared universe, LOL great episode thanks for posting!

The thing with the "Superman/45 yr old insurance salesman" is actually good and not bad in the sense that Peter Parker is trying to hide the fact he's a teenager/early 20 year old. It may seem cheesy, but remember it's a comic. Why do you think Ditko designed a mask that covered his hole face? To hide his boyish features! Why not the saem for his voice? He doesn't need to sound like a "Sonic-the-Hedegehog-chiili-dog" dude bro type. There should never be a scene in a Spider-Man movie where he rides a skateboard/snowboard to the tune of "American Idiot".

I liked it when I watched when it was a cartoon that played on the tv before I went to school and did not really talk to anyone about it, not even touching the internet at that point except for I think sending an email. Was super happy when the theme was being sung in the first real Spider Man movie, which happened to be my family's first DVD. It was a silly mess.
Loved is a bit of a stretch, but I was a pretty big fan when I was a kid. I even modelled my first Spidey costume after the one seen in the show.

Either he’d had two of them pulled off or it was really Insect-man, Insect-man who was doing the things and insect can.
I remember both Spider-Man and Rocket Robin Hood as new cartoons in the mid-1960s, and enjoyed watching them. Hanna-Barbera was also doing similar limited animation series at the time like Space Ghost, Birdman, and Herculoids.

VERB preceded (past tense) · preceded (past participle) come before (something) in time: "a gun battle had preceded the explosions") the main feature and enjoyed old locally created ad campaigns to celebrate local companies - uncouth road scrap metal ad was a blast - but i have no real idea what entails going to the cinema these days... so a mass of trailers which then runs straight into the main feature suggests nowadays cinema managers and their staff grew up on VHS/DVD viewing as myself and others were going out to those crusty old cinemas they were eager to trash and get rid of.. quite ironic, really... seeing as the new festive and glossy cinema is daunting inhumane and not a patch on what is used to be...

I was about to say "the spaceship from Rocket Robin Hood"...and then you spoiled my moment.
Even though I was born in the mid-seventies, I grew up watching these in reruns. The music from this show is still to this day my mental theme music.
It was REALLY weird! Watched it in the afternoons after school back in the 70s. Loved all the bizarre, trippy villains that were created just for the show....a lot of aliens, mad scientists and creatures from deep beneath the earth. A lot of them were green.
You don't even mention that every episode is packed with incredible jazz written by world-class composers. I noticed the connection to Rocket Robinhood as a young kid since I was a fan of both... Now I see how empty the episodes can be with the swinging through backgrounds etc. But, my three year-old is just as filled with joy and suspense as I was.
This show is the single biggest reason I became a huge Spider-Man fan. Seeing this 5 days a week in syndication made me love the characters. The Stan Lee/Steve Ditko/John Romita, Sr. influence is all over season 1 and the first 2 episodes of season 2. At the time though, those were the only people that had worked on Spidey comics. The musical score is legendary in itself. I have a lot of issues with the majority of seasons 2 and 3 but, as a child, it was still Spidey at the end of the day.
You`re absolutely right regarding the Ditko and Romita influence on Season One.
Season Two`s layouts were from two other excellent artists: Gray Morrow and Wally Wood.
By 1968, these two were disenchanted with working for Marvel, and especially for the domineering Stan Lee ( "My way, or the highway"). So they worked freelance for any company which required their services. They were loners, and drew material which was often "on the edge," something which Stan Lee was not fond of.
The Ray Ellis music in season 1 is so good.

The voices on classic Spiderman were also present in the classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964) IE: the voice of Rodolph's reindeer coach was also the voice of J. Jonah Jameson.

When I was a kid. This show introduced me to Spider-Man in the 1970's.
I kind of liked the second season, episodes were a full half hour, and the music and imagery was trippier, more 60's. My favorite episode of that era was "Home" where Peter found an alien girl with spider powers. I don't know if that was based on an original comic or not, but I really liked it.
Full episode stories were more complex, suspenseful and interesting, and were for older audiences. Season One was aimed at 5-8 year olds.
Season Two had menaces which were way more terrifying and threatening, such as Blotto, Pardo Presents, and Vine.
Even without the memes. This is still the Best Spiderman TV show. It doesn't need to have these storylines and development. It can be as simple as the Green Goblin stealing Magical artifacts and it still works. The campiness makes it even better. Electro is a perfect example. Probably the funniest villain in the show

Green goblin in this show was based on stan lees original idea for the character of a movie crew finding an Egyptian sarcophagus and accidentally bring the green goblin to life (info taken from IMDB)
You forgot to mention that the "Me and the boys" meme was actually fake. Rhino was added by a fan user, for no odd reasons. I wish he would've added Mysterio to that party or Doc Ock, cause that's what a fan would do. But that episode was only about Goblin, Electro and Vulture.

Love the 60's Spider-Man when I was a kid, along with 80's Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends
Norman Osborn was revealed as the Green Goblin in September 1966 (Amazing Spider-Man issue #40). The Green Goblin had been a villain for almost two years at that point, and towards the tail end of that run before the reveal they kept teasing that he had a secret identity as one of the other characters (it's an interesting subject to read about). They would later do the same thing with the Hobgoblin in the 80s.
I don't know what the show's production timeframe was, but it seems like it would be possible that the script for the "The Witching Hour" episode could have been made before the reveal in the comics, if that was even a concern.
The Witching Hour came out about a year after Osborn was revealed to be the Goblin. For years, the narrative was that Ditko wanted the Goblin to be a nobody and Lee wanted him to be Osborn, but there are several interviews where Ditko says he always planned on Osborn being Goblin, hence giving him distinctive hair and only showing up in issues GG is in.
But most interestingly, Ditko claims he had to talk Stan Lee into making GG a human villain in a mask when Lee wanted to make a literal supernatural goblin. So maybe Stan, who was a consultant on the 60s show, is the one who suggested just skipping all the complicated mystery stuff that seems to be Ditko's idea, and going back to his original idea of just a goblin whose green.
@@ericjohnson9623 Interesting, especially since in "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends" (which Stan Lee narrates and probably had input on) Norman Osborn literally transforms into a "goblin" and his evil plan is to turn everyone in NYC into goblins. Too bad he didn't pick New Jersey instead (it would probably have been an improvement for some).

when I was a kid watching these in the late 60s, I always felt like it was comic book scenes brought to the screen with audio. Remember, this was the time of Batman live on TV.

This cartoon was probably my first introduction to Spider-Man overall. (And was probably the most faithful compared to his appearances on 'The Electric Company'.) Looking back on it now, there's no denying that this show was definitely a product of it's time when TV animation was at it's lowest point. The animation can be compared to anything Filmation would produce since it reused animation cels just as much as they would. Though, compared to Filmation's cartoons, 'Spider-Man '67' looks, and feels so much weirder. Yet, as weird, and bizarre as that series can be, it's alot better than the more recent 'Spider-Man' cartoons we've seen post 'Spectacular'. So with that out of the way, you should do a video about the 'Marvel Superhero' cartoons from the same year, as well as Hanna-Barbera's 'Fantastic Four', or some of the 70's Marvel cartoons from Depate-Freleng before Marvel acquired them to form Marvel Productions. Those would be fun videos to watch because they would make for some interesting videos.
I really hope you talk about the MTV Spider-Man the New Animated Series( 2003) eventually, in my opinion i feel that is probably the most underrated Spider-Man show

My grandma bought me a dvd set of this show. It was a lot like a dream. Especially those later episodes.
A lot of people that say Spidey '67 isn't Spidey don't take into consideration that the character was just over four years old at the time so not everything was ironed out yet. Oh, and in The Witching Hour and the Norman Osborn thing, it was p0robably because when the episode was written and produced they hadn't revealed his identity.
I always interpreted the Green Goblin of this series as actual green goblin and not some guy in a costume.
I know this was cheezy - but I have always loved it. It was my childhood Spider-Man

@@jojomojojones I watched this when i was a young'un and loved the freak out jazz and dirty sleazy brass, i didn't know it was freak out jazz but later when i heard jazz i didn't immediately hate it like most people ha! Great chords to have in your head for a youngster, so much more interesting than saturated metal in power rangers or boring major key kids music.
This was still on air when I was a kid. The animation was obviously bare bones, but I really enjoyed the music and still listen to it occasionally today .
This was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. But unlike other favorites I would see on Saturday mornings, I got to watch *Spider-Man* every single day in syndication in the 70s.
I always preferred season 1. But as a fan of Ralph Bakshi since I was in high school, I later came to appreciate his turn at the helm of *Spider-Man.* And I think your video made me appreciate the later eps even more.
There was a personal feel to season 1, that I don't know if I can explain. It causes me to enjoy it more. For instance, I will play the season 1 episodes on TH-cam sometimes when I'm having trouble going to sleep. It's an oddly quiet show. The splash of dark water colors, the music, and especially the montages of him swinging through the city lull me to sleep while adding a cushion of nostalgia.
In my memory, there was never a difference between the seasons. It wasn't until later, with the invention of the internet, and later TH-cam, that I learned about Ralph Bakshi's work on it, and was able to see the difference his input made. As I said, after watching your video, I'm now more curious as to the content of the later episodes. I really didn't like the look of them comparatively. But now I wish to watch them a little more in-depth.

In today's Meme Culture, The 60's Spidey is the most bizzare piece of Spider-Man media that can really enthrall you.
I loved the episode as a kid where he battle the "Skymaster"... due to the super funky 60's jazz and the hilarious scene where Spidey attaches his web to a cloud (that it turns out later has a blimp inside of it).

But that show was like 2 different shows. The Canadian one filmed in Hamilton, Ontario (seasons 1 and 2), and the Season 3 one made in New York city by Ralph Bakshi, which was aimed at older audiences and had less than half the funding as the previous seasons.

Very, very faithful emotionally and morally to the original material: Amazing Fantasy #15 comic.
Many lines from the tv episode come STRAIGHT from the comic. The last 2 lines of the episode spoken by narrator Bernard Cowan sums up what Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were trying so arduously to do month after month with Marvel comics in 1962.

Great video with fond memories. I was born in 1968 and grew up with this cartoon - watching them again and again. There was an episode where Manhattan was in some alternative universe. I swear that the thugs depicted in that episode influenced Walter Hill's iconic "Warriors" and maybe even Flavor Flav's "clock around the neck" look.

Say what you will about the quality of the show itself, but nobody can deny that it gave us the best Spider-Man theme until Danny Elfman came along.

Many Season 2 episodes were very, very faithful to the MOOD of the Amazing Spider-man comic at that time. More emphasis on Peter Parker`s social troubles than Spider-man`s exploits.
That is why the origin episode is about Peter Parker, and not the hero. And it is the best written episode of the series, you`re right!
I'm 45 I grew up on that Spiderman and it was a Canadian production which makes it even better.
The voice talent was Canadian, recorded in Toronto, Ontario. The animation, in Season One, was done in Hollywood, and Season Two`s animation was done in New York city.
Oh, I do love me some Ralph Bakshi. Wizards is probably my favorite animated movie ever.

My mom bought the whole series and played it in our van whenever we drove anywhere. It made me fall in love with Spider-Man, and this show will always be my favourite version of Spider-Man. Love this series
This show was my first experience of Spider-Man, and I love every weird bit of it.
Loved the trippy music and visuals in the Bakshi seasons. Whenever I hear Led Zepplin's "How Many More Times?" it reminds me of those seasons. It's not in the series, but it has the same vibe.
Now I'm waiting for an episode for the tokusatsu Spider-man. Make it happen, cap'n!

That’s my favourite Spider-Man, the 60’s Spider-Man was the first Spider-Man cartoon I saw as a kid and still my favourite today. I’m proud to have all the seasons of it on DVD. The 60’s Spider-Man has the best Peter Parker as well. The other ones like the live action movies, the adaptation of peter Parker were winey pukes. Great video, keep up the great work 👍

Not bad, considering the shoestring budget, especially with the Bakshi episodes.
I like to think of the show being two separate, VERY DIFFERENT shows: the silly 1967 episodes, aimed for young kids, and the more plausible, serious Bakshi episodes which were for a slightly older audience yet way more underfunded.
This spiderman serie was my childhood.

Watched this cartoon religiously beginning with it's debut in 1967. Recorded it on small reel to reel tapes, for repeated listening. Now own the dvds. The first season, pre-Bakshi, was/is my favorite. Does the cartoon hold up? Pretty much in the same way that Goerge Reeves 'Adventures of Superman'. What is timeless is Ray Ellis' jazzy music underscores; those cues are unique, and dynamite!

You forgot to mention how amazing the music is. Full jazz big band playing complex arrangements compared to one guy doing midi like these days. Absolutely loved this show. So relaxing and entertaining. Little more violent and cheeky fun that 80s one which nearly makes you feel brain dead, this one was fun.
I grew up with this series, I barely remember episode plots but the theme song has always stayed with me.
I've never seen the show. It sounds like a very interesting, even fascinating case study, and gratitude must be had for its incredibly catchy, and enduring theme song.
I was watching this series years ago on Netflix and barely paying attention. It was late in an episode involving a Vulture plot when suddenly Spider-Man appears with a bag of money, as-if he'd confiscated loot from a villain. Trouble was that the plot had nothing to do with stealing money. After a rewind of the video I soon realized that the episode had been cobbled together because the beginning and ending didn't match.

As a kid in the early 70's that got up to watch these reruns, from our perspective, they were Comic Books brought to life! A treasured 15 minutes before you knew your best friend would be at your back door with his bike readied to seize the day! (before lunch-time at least)

Yes. Well put, regarding the music stock used for seasons 2 and 3. The musical selections seemed to be very meticulously and carefully chosen to enhance the mood of the scene in question.
They probably spent more time on the music and voice dubbing than the actual animation.
