    Great work. I was hoping it was the left joycon with the same issue I've been having with the one I'm working on. Glad you were able to get your's solved.

    Nice job. If you find it difficult with heat on small side resistors and caps. Try using an iron with blob of solder and touch both pads and slide the components into the solder blob. Works every time and no heat stress to board :)

    The bottom resistor, what is the value? I've got a switch with a similar issue but no extra board to pull from except a switch oled board, might be able to find one somewhere on the board but I have no idea what the value is to even begin looking.
    great video, made me look closer after trying a few different joycon rails.

    Oh wow, that donor board was a good example of why the real board has to be heated from underneath, those connectors did not hold up at all.
    It's one thing to know that will happen, quite another to see it though.

    Ignore the fan spin?! But the fan spin is how we know it's fixed. ;)

    i have this issue on my switch oled. right joycon will completely randomly disconnect ( switches to wireless communication) sometimes months in between instances. the joycon will still charge while connected to the switch, it just seems to get switch to wireless communication and get stuck there. holding the reset button on the joycon fixes it every time.

    Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how can you put that much generalised heat on the board without warping it? Like is that even a danger, or shouldn't I be worried about that?

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's no such thing as a dumb question. You only learn by asking 😀 in fairness you're absolutely right, it can warp the board or more commonly a process we call "popcorning". The board is made up of several layers sandwiched together (sometimes 8 or more layers) and each layer is separated by a thing called a substrate. If it gets too hot it can cause the layers to stretch and then pop out like popcorn. That causes internal shorts on the board and basically kills the board completely. This happens a lot more often when we're dealing with boards which have been liquid damaged because of the moisture inside the layers. When reworking the board we don't generally just go full on with the heat and that's why you'll see us moving the heat around for a short period of time before moving in closer. That spreads the heat to stop that happening. Also 400⁰C-480⁰C might seem high and it is, but the heat is very sporadic in that it's being pumped out in the form of air, so a lot of that heat is lost to nothingness. It disappears off into the open air so we have to use higher temperatures than the typical 217⁰C melting point of solder to be able to heat up a specific area. When we deal with infrared heat such as that from BGA Rework machines and IR pre-heaters the heat is a lot more controlled and direct, therefore it requires much less heat to get the job done. Hope this clears things up a little 😀

      @@TheCod3r Thank you for your detailed explanation. I think I get it now. The fact the heat was strong enough to burn your fingers through the tweezers made me wonder this because I assumed the warping point of the substrate would be lower than the burning point of flesh, but I also don't know the composition of the substrate and (based on my limited experience rebuilding electronics but not actually soldering boards) I assumed it's a composite of plastics (e: with very thin layers of metals to carry charges). I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge on this!
      e2: so it sounds like more an art than a science. 😊

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah one thing people don't take into account really is that the human body can only withstand temperatures of around 46⁰C before it starts to cause severe discomfort. This is obviously because our nervous system is very sensitive and it really doesn't take much to be in pain. I don't really know the composition of substrate myself other than the fact it's made of fiberglass amongst other things. It is definitely a skill to get it right but even the best of the best make mistakes. I had two instances in one night on a live stream a couple of weeks ago where I popcorned two boards in an hour trying to do a CPU reball. Ended up having to replace the board for the customer because it was my hot air heating element which caused it (it was failing) :)
