I really like learning about songwriting, not because I write songs, but because I think it makes me appreciate songs more. Seeing everything under the hood
Honestly this less scripted video felt just as short and watchable as your normal edited videos, and I don’t believe it but now I have the urge to write a song myself and ideas are already brewing in my head. Keep up the inspiring content
The golden rule for any writing, whether it's lyrics or poetry is - "mean what you say, don't say what you mean". Absolutely no one ever speaks literally, they always insinuate and hint at the true meaning. This is vital to do in lyrics as to spell things out for this listener removes all the interaction with your song. The listener just becomes passive, absorbing your song instead of creating their own ideas in their head. Paint with metaphors instead of literal descriptions - how does something make you feel? Don't just write how you feel, write about something else that makes you feel that way and let the listener make the connection themselves. Here is an example of some of the lyrics from one of my songs - the meaning of the song is obvious, but instead of being literal, I'm explaining how I feel by using emotions and visuals of other things that generare similar emotions. I'm the last in line for your attention All sold before I meet your eyes I put my arm around your shoulder And pull your body close to mine So we sit here stranded in the ocean The sun it shines a silver heat The grace of shade from better memories Is something only found in dreams Back in time my mind it starts to wonder When first your eyes slid from the screen When your iphone seemed more interesting Than any words I have to speak
I’ve been thinking about how people can properly structure a song for weeks because it seemed so impossible but this simplified breakdown helped me a lot. I never thought about how important the actual lyrics are and how you must think about them first to determine the structure. I was always thinking “I must figure out a blueprint of this song and then think of lyrics that fit right along with it”, and that just made things too complicated. Thank you so much for providing us with your interpretations of what makes song structure work, because it helped immensely.
Hey! I really like your approach and thought it was a really nice idea to share something you wrote yourself and share your insight. Any words on what this concept album might be? Or where we could hear about it when it is ready?
