I mean, in the case of Frozen, she WAS going to be the villain and Let It Go WAS going to be her villain song, atleast in early versions of the script for the movie. That song was originally written to be Frozen's villain song, so it's not really that weird for people to still put it in that category even though the final product didn't have it as a villain song.

i just want to point out that i first heard this song in norwegian and usually translations can be a bit weird, but this one is like literally unintelligible in norwegian and that's down to the song being a mess already in english. but hey at least in norwegian the line about throwing caution the every warning sign is changed to something along the lines of "i just leave the warnings behind" so at least i know that the poor people who had to translate this mess tried

Weird how the only few songs I've seen for this movie have all had the name Moana in them. It just feels so weird and tacked on. I wish I was able to point out why it's so weird here vs why it sounds so natural in Encanto.

I didn’t know anything about Wicked the movie so when I started seeing the ads and trailers I legitimately couldn’t tell if it was Ariana Grande or just someone who sometimes looked like her. Mad respect to her for fully embodying the character

I think some of the lines are more “awkward” to make the rhyme scheme or the rhythm work better which is a common technique. Even the likes of Shakespeare did this, so I think as long as the message gets across, it’s fine to rearrange your words a bit, but that may just be me.

A lot of the songs don’t have an emotional core simply because the musical is completely sung through so it functions kind of like an opera, with both recitative (plot based songs) and aria (emotion based songs).

I mean, sure, you are professional in musical-related franchises and such but idk. Maybe it's me being a heavy fan of Epic, maybe it's my bias for the musical. I am one of your fans as well and I can see you have your own points in criticizing the musical. Idk if it's just me but there were some unessecary comments that I wasn't fond of. But hey, it's all on the person. It's all on how we interpret the musical in itself. There was a lot of detail, love and care put into this musical as the 4 years went by of its creation. The motifs, the instruments that represent each character, the subtle hints and references for every second that passes, it's all intentional. Sure, I get your picks and comments on some of the lyrics but genuinely, some weren't really needed. Js me tho. Js me. To each their own, to each their own.😭

I think you focus on the wrong songs to compare for your analysis. Surface Pressure and What Else Can I do are songs sung by the side characters, so it makes sense that there songs are in a more pop structure. It’s like the songs Under the sea or Hakuna Matata, who were the « pop songs » of their time. On the other hand Waiting on a Miracle is an I Want Song which is very efficient in its introspection of Mirabel’s character, as before we only saw the more joyful and smiling side of Mirabel and at this moment we enter into her own dilemma. It’s integral to the story because it shows how much she wants to prove her family that she is worth something (leading to the line « open your eyes »). And it then is interrupted by the cracks in the house, which motivates Mirabel to save the miracle.

It’s funny I think the exact opposite. Encanto is the first Disney in a long time where the music is integral to the story, while it could be suppressed from nearly every Disney from the 2010 (Moana may be an exception). It was especially the case with Frozen 2. Encanto sounded to me like a breath of fresh air, as finally the songs made the story go forward. Because Lin Manuel Miranda used more hip hop style like in Hamilton, it doesn’t mean the songs are less integral to the story. Luisa’s song still tells a story even in its traditional structure. The song start by implying that she is strong, then we see what hides under the surface, then we have a chorus about how she tries to maintain her status by supporting the pressure. Then the second verse is an extension of the metaphors of the first, by adding images of more and more heavy metaphors, leading to a bridge that shows her an escape to this position. And then she cuts back to what her situation is on her daily life. And there is a progression since she ends up hugging her sister, plus the fact that she realized in front of her sister the pressure she endured led to Luisa feel weak. This song is also very reminding of Breathe from In The Heights, as they share the same underlying theme that serves both these characters. Same for Isabela’s song, because there is a more traditional structure doesn’t mean it doesn’t make the story advance, as Mirabel makes up her differences with her sister during the song, and Isabela and her shared a moment of complicity for the first time. Plus, the songs in Encanto are very clever in the way they reprise moments of the previous songs, which is definitely due to Lin. The bridge in What else can I do comes from Isabela’s lyrics in We don’t talk about Bruno. And both Isabela’s and Luisa’s themes are reprised in the final song while they are rebuilding the house together. The same can be said about Abuela’s line in The Family Madrigal which are a foreshadowing of the Dos Oruguitas song. This is one of the first Disney musical ever that made the melody of the songs integral to the characters. The only Disney movie that dared to do that before was Frozen with Elsa’s motive in For the First Time in Forever and Reprise. But for me the best song of the movie was Waiting on the Miracle. I’m surprised you didn’t talk about it because this is one of the best I want songs. It was cleverly built up with how the others saw Mirabel, and it shows with very thought out lyrics the struggles of Mirabel as an outcast of the family, and it’s integral to the story as we see the other side of her character and the deep sadness she hid from everyone else. This song is very underrated as the structure of the song is closer to a Broadway musical (the rhythm is reminding of Burn from Hamilton) and there is an effective crescendo both in the music and the emotional core.

I’m sorry but Mirabel’s lines in Isabela’s song is the moment where she enters into Isabela’s psyche and encourages her to continue, which leads to Isabela and her reconcile.

Scuttlebutt is horrible. But Surface Pressure from Encanto?? Confused by the hate. I thought that song was very well done. The singer was great and I felt a lot of emotion during it. Like I know many others did. .. Encanto was the first Disney movie to come out in awhile with great songs performed by amazing singers and 10/10 story. Now they went right back to trash, especially with that Wish movie.

The synth solo feels super out of place to me, i havent seen the second movie yet but the first used more traditional or non-electronic instruments, and whatever was electronic was hardly noticeable, haveing a random, in your face, synth solo in a musical that takes place in a place and time that doesnt yet have computers is just, weird to me

I get why people are upset that this critique is primarily negative, but I imagine this stream would be far longer if she explained everything that worked for her. People have praised just about every single nuance of this musical, so constant praise of what it does well would be reductive

This performance is all over the place. Like can they give this woman some direction, Melissa sounds like she's all on her own being told "eh, just do an Ursula impression without repeating Pat." That seems to be the trend in all of the live action remakes, nobody seems to actually be steering the ship, so all the songs just sound like bad nights out at karaoke.

A cool part of Crossing the Line that i noticed that may or may not be deliberate but is definitely clever without Trying Too Hard is the rhyme scheme in Cass’ first verse. “This has to *stop* now, This thing where you think that you’ve been my fri *end* And don’t even hear how you condesc *end* The way you always *done* ” The use of words synonymous with ending, plus the “end” rhymes do great job of emphasizing Cass’ anger and how she is more driven by this anger than a desire for reconciliation even before the back and forth. It helps build tension because we’re primed for Rapunzel to fail to reason with her

Hellfire is the best villain song IMO. Unlike other villain songs which focus on the "I am" theme, and the hero songs on the "I want", Hellfire focuses on the "I want" theme because it mostly focuses on Frollo praying to God and the Virgin Mary to destroy Esmeralda
