    Probably the funniest bit of Eldar lore I like is one of the reasons the Necrons went into hibernation was because with the Old Ones gone they expected the Eldar to basically self-destruct and decided to just wait it out.
    Then come modern 40k and the Necrons were proven basically 100% right. The only thing they couldn't foresee was the Eldar blowing themselves up so bad they basically started dragging all of reality with them via the Eye of Terror turned Great Rift.

    Pretty sure the Necrontyr weren't created by The Old Ones. They were part of the life that already existed in galaxy before those space frogs showed-up, hence why they have nothing to do with the Warp/Psychic powers, which The Old Ones were masters of.

    Eldar could be made very cool: predicting future, technology undistinguishible from magic, jumping from planet to planet via the webway, giant jumping robots, evasive, mysterious and puzzling. The Ynnari annoy me for one singular reason:
      The Aeldari don't deserve their god of death. They put maybe a couple of million souls in their infinity circuits, networked them together and called it a day. _The Imperium of Man gets those numbers in an hour, and use the entire galaxy as their infinity circuit. The Imperium carves its worship of death into the face of the universe by hand. Have you seen their decor?! Have you read the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer? _*_Have you read literally any Imperial adage about how the only reward for cowards is another day of fear?!_* The fact that the Emperor of Mankind isn't Ynnead is absolutely nuts.

      @matthiuskoenig3378 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @Zahaqiel 1, it's more like billions of eldar souls.
      2, eldar souls are way more potent than human souls.
      3, The eldar are way more experianced with warp nonsense, God making and can look into the future to try out different methods to accelerate the birthing of a god.

    • @Zahaqiel
      @Zahaqiel 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@matthiuskoenig3378 It's not like billions of eldar souls, there aren't that many Asuryani and there certainly haven't been that many who've died in the past ten thousand years - the Eldar are _incredibly_ conservative with their own lives, for obvious reasons. And even factoring that in the Aeldari have never had a very high population compared to other races (prior to the Fall their empire only ever amounted to a few thousand worlds at most), and in the past ten thousand years of canon they haven't had particularly high birthrates either. It's millions of collected dead souls, not billions.
      And secondly, it doesn't matter that Eldar souls are more potent than human ones, humans outnumber them so greatly that the psychic weight of humanity is far greater than the Elder ever were or ever have been (as has been repeatedly reinforced in recent years with the Dark King lore and the predictions of what will happen when the Golden Throne fails, humanity have enough psychic weight to boil the whole galaxy out of existence if they ever create their own Eye of Terror).
      So point three really doesn't matter. They can accelerate the birthing of a god all they like, their efforts should only ever have been subordinate to the greater enterprise of the Imperial creed's god of death, and their "waking of Ynnead" should have simply given the Emperor some morning warp-coffee.

    I think the Eldar could work as a faction but they’ve been absolutely abused and neglected by GW for years now and honestly I think the Craftworld Eldar are kinda obsolete as a faction.
    1. The Eldar’s ability to see into the future is constantly nerfed by writers because “Oh we see the future and follow the plan to victory” isn’t a dramatic and interesting way of telling a story, so their main ability that make the Craft Eldar a believable player in the galaxy is often more of a hindrance then a boon.
    2. The Eldar elites often don’t get the respect they deserve in most stories: Aspect Warriors are practically Space Marine Tier warriors but they don’t accomplish nearly as much as Space Marine do, and if a Space Marine has an actual name then they can rip through Aspect Warriors and Exarchs like butter.
    3. Their role as the Imperium’s main Xenos ally has been seriously eroded over time, after the Ynari plot line fell through the Eldar have been in storytelling Limbo while the Necrons have become increasingly prominent and filling the Eldar’s old role.

      Marines are elevated humans.
      Aspect warriors are elevated aeldari.
      Aeldari are already taller and stronger, they are more intelligent and they are way faster than us.
      In my mind something like fighting a formation of aspect warriors should be VERY DEMANDING and VERY COSTLY to the Space Marines. And individual duels should be disadvantegous to the marine, hence there should be a net negative in the folder of "marines who duel an aspect warrior and win" and there should be a net positive in the folder of "marines who found out"

    • @katamariroller2837
      @katamariroller2837 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +79

      @@OljeiKhan Different writers have different perceptions of power levels, and GW apparently doesn´t have a "quality control guy" to hit people with numbers or something to make the damn levels believably consistent.
      This is why you can have Dreadnoughts where the pilot is a Space Marine that lost at least two limbs and a couple vital organs yet still survived long enough to be put in a sarcophagus, but at the same time most Space Marines die from, like, a single knife stab in the ribs or something.
      Personally, I´m of the opinion that Space Marines fighting Chaos Space Marines should look like a no-rules, fight-to-the-death wrestling fight between two rabid lobsters up to their antennae in fentanyl.
      But on the subject of Eldar, we know they are faster and stronger than regular humans, and even a perfectly normal Eldar is slightly psychic and precognitive. Aspect Warriors are also highly ritualistic soldiers that make fighting in a very specific way their life, and also probably have more experience than the average Butler Bother. So yeah, makes perfect sense that Space Marines and Aspect Warriors should be at the very least on par with each other, until you factor in a) Exarchs and b) the rest of the Eldar army that includes MORE precognitive people, xenophobic psychopats, and people that make battle plans by reading the goddamned future, at which point Space Marines SHOULD be at a disadvantage most of the time when fighting Eldar.

In fact, if memory serves me right, only one caption had a special little "screech" move that he used to kill a bunch of banshees.
    Eldrad also picked Fulgrim because Fulgrim was the only primarch with an open enough mind not to just KILL Eldrad outright for saying Horus was a traitor. You know, I've been wondering for quite some time now where the whole "haughty arrogant elitist elf" stereotype came from. Tolkien's elves aren't really like that, at least. It actually seems to have evolved gradually over time, almost as if most writers simply have trouble imagining a clearly superior species _not_ lording it over us.
    While technically not elves, my favorite alien species of this general type (and possibly my favorite in general) are the Protoss from StarCraft, specifically because they subvert the trope. Like, sure, there's that one guy Aldaris and his bosses, the Conclave, who do act like arrogant space elves. But all the Protoss hero characters we follow in the storyline are just plain good guys who are totally chill about hanging out with rough, gruff space-cowboy James Raynor, basically treating him as an honorary Protoss, and over-all they seem to genuinely respect Terrans as resourceful warriors. Heck, the story pretty much gets started because Tassadar figured: "Look, maybe we shouldn't casually genocide these people and write it off as collateral damage just because they happen to be in the way? It's not their fault their planets have a Zerg problem."

    • @l.o.v.e-sick5330
      @l.o.v.e-sick5330 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Eh, elitist elves appeared not because writers can't imagine a clearly superior species not lording over us, they've appeared because writers wanted to deconstruct Tolkien elves and make them more morally grey or a villains. And what is the most obvious flaw you can give to a clearly superior race?Arrogance, of course.

    • @RelativelyBest
      @RelativelyBest 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@l.o.v.e-sick5330 Dunno if I consider arrogance to be a _moral_ flaw, though. At least not in the "morally grey" sense, which implies making pragmatic choices. It just makes you sorta insufferable. If anything, having elves be ruthless moral pragmatists might have been a better approach than giving them a cultural superiority complex.
      See, deconstruction isn't really about making stuff darker or more cynical. It's about "disassembling" an idea or trope and analyzing the constituent parts in order to better understand its meaning and relevance.
      Often this results in the trope being applied in a more realistic way than originally intended. (This is especially apparent with stuff that wasn't meant to be taken very seriously, like stories for children.) Unfortunately, a lot of people end up think realism and cynicism are the same thing.
      Like, if you really want to deconstruct elves, you might try to imagine what an immortal being who has been alive for thousands of years might actually think and act like, and what sort of culture this would result in. This is an interesting question because obviously we have no way of knowing and it's quite possible such an individual would have developed a perspective and set of values that would seem very alien to us.
      Just having this ancient elf be sort of a racist prick isn't "wrong," exactly. I mean, I guess that could happen. But it's kinda shallow. It's still just normal human behavior applied to a being who absolutely wouldn't qualify as "normal" by human standards. It's sorta the opposite of what a deconstruction is supposed to do.
      Besides all that, the fact that it ended up a stereotype still kinda suggests that the "arrogant elf" resonated with a lot of writers. I sorta doubt all of them set out to do a deconstruction on elves, much less the _same_ deconstruction. It still comes across as if that particular portrayal seemed accurate to many people.

      Thank you! So many people trace it back to Tolkien... but actually, Tolkien did elves right... everyone else failed to properly learn from it. Then maybe properly play into their "farseeing" stuff; have them become seemingly insane, because they're trying to pluck at the strands of reality to shape/chase futures they've seen, resulting in actions and decisions that are seemingly deranged in the short-term, but end up actually leading to interesting victories in the long-run. Have them move through the galaxy as if they exist on a totally different timescale to the other races, fleeting in appearance but perpetual in influence.
      Have them talk... a lot less. Seriously, nothing ruins an "old and wise" character more than having them talk to much and revealing that the writer isn't sufficiently wise or talented to actually convey an old and wise character, and having them come across as a 13 year-old's idea of "the older generation".

    Eldar are very based, pity GW refuses to update them and the lore writers at GW decide that they always either die like idiots or are outright retarded (rant incoming).
    The Eldar have existed in 40k since the days of rogue trader as one of the main factions of the game, this solidified during 2nd edition, the actual first iteration of 40k as a developed setting.
    The Eldar hold during this era a very classical role in the universe of 40k, filling the space of the extremely advanced, old and mysterious race whose motives are not very well known. It is very important to know that the Eldar at this point are considered to be the most advanced race, with the strongest psykers and with a very specific and unique way of fighting working around specialist squads.
    They were also very relevant, forming the trio of classic factions next to orks and space marines. And while 40k didn’t have much in the way of stories or novels like it does nowadays, the lore snippets made them feel important and influential.
    About overlapping themes, this is a problem most settings suffer from once they start to expand and they add more races, overlapping is inevitable.
    An example are Necrons, that stripped Eldar of their old mantle as the most technologically advanced species, but hey, at least they are still the most powerful psykers and masters of specialised warfare… right?
    Well, ends up now big humans have an army full of 100% psykers (Grey knights), and forget about being the strongest psykers, now every named space marine psyker (Mephiston, Tigurius, Ezekiel, Magnus) has more feats than the single strongest farseer to ever live (Eldrad).
    In one hand you have Mephiston obliterating millions of tyrannids while he flies away as a classic space marine Gary Tsu, on the other hand you got this 10.000+ years old Eldrad guy whose best feat is awakening a god, that sounds neat before you remember he kinda failed at it because he couldn’t kill a single space marine that was about to fuck up the ritual.
    And his gets worse when Magnus can easily move ships in orbit, some random chaos sorcerer literally transports a frigate through space without problems and Tigurius can take a peek at the hive mind’s thoughts. Meanwhile almost every farseer to ever appear in a book fails completely at predicting the future (you know, their only job), or display such incompetence it is laughable that these guys have survived 10 thousand years at this point.
    Oh, and forget about being masters of specialised warfare, because now primaris space marines do it better (yeah, I know HH era marines copied this before, but not half as relevant).
    And remember grav tech? Time ago only Eldar had it in numbers. Then necrons, Tau and Eldar had em, now Custodes, Space marines, Eldar, Necrons , mechanicus and Tau have it.
    And now on books. In general BL books are low quality bolter porn, but at least you get to see your faction kick some ass… right?
    Well, except if you like craftworld eldar, for some reason you are amongst the oldest factions in the entire lore but you have less novels than literally random space marines chapters that are not even first founding.
    And don’t expect much because only 1 novel about craftworld eldar (Valedor) is any decent. In the rest all they do is being incompetent, useless morons that get pounded by space marines and in general the imperium as they helplessly die like idiots, I guess that’s what happens when Gav Thorpe and CS Goto have written literally most of your books.
    But then, when Eldar seemed to have lost relevance we got hope in the form of the Ynnari, a faction that would unite all Eldar in a cool as hell version of the space elf Avengers, sounds neat, right?
    Well, indeed it sounded awesome till Gav Thorpe decided to take a hold on them. And so this faction has a single purpose, to find all the croneswords and both empower Ynnead and kill or trap Slaanesh, this sounds like an awesome time to do what they did in AoS (trap Slaanesh temporarily and drain souls from her) and have the Eldar win for once in their lives. (haha, what a joke)
    If course the whole thing is a mess. In the end they are incapable of accomplishing their objective since the last cronesword is in Slaanesh’ palace (I guess Guilliman can burn some of nurgle’s garden, but cegorach and Ynnead are too weak I do jackshit, poor guys committed the mistake of being Eldar instead of Imperial).
    But before this Yvraine gets curbstomped first by imperial guard, then by some demon.
    In the process of this massive Oof Gav Thorpe delights us by making the cool as hell Spear of Twilight, a vampiric weapon used by Prince Yriel capable of even making the Hive Mind scream in pain and permakilling anything... Into a cronesword, Yvraine transforms the damn spear into a sword, because we all know another generic sword is cooler than an actually unique, recognisable weapon.
    The cherry on top of this shitcake is a group consisting of Yvraine, The visarch, Lelith Hesperax, Jain Zar, a solitaire alongside a small army of Ynnari failing to kill a single greater demon (ye, those ones space marine captains easily kill in every damn book). So first the visarch and the solitaire die and the rest are defeated by the demon. Then Yvraine proceeds to summon the Yncarne and defeats the demon… that ended up being a simple projection at 1% of its power…
    You end up with a faction that are old, but not the oldest. Have good technology but are not the best. Fight in specialised squads, but so do other factions. And are a psychic race that is much worse at being psykers than humans. To top things even harder all they do is being pathetic in every damn book (and I wish I had made this about dark eldar to explain my disdain for that turd that is Silent Hunters) and never accomplish a single time any of their objectives.

    I like basically everything about the Eldar that isn't their lore or character traits. I like most of their aesthetics, ESPECIALLY looking back at 90s eldar artwork. I like their connection to the warp and their ability to build shit from their minds. I like their shuriken guns and wraithgaurd/lords. I like their vehicles and melee weapons and starships.
    But when it comes to their lore...you hit the nail on the head. They are so "Stereotypically" elven and uppity about themselves that they do literally end up becoming idiots who cant see beyond themselves, and often cause their own misfortune.
    It is actually specifically because of this that I would argue against 40K elves being considered anything like Tolkien's elves, because Tolkien WASNT A DUMBASS. His elves are "uppity" towards men and "other races" because they fall victim to the same kind of mentality that Sauron and Melkor did, being closer to the gods than any of them in nature- of thinking that that are incapable of being brought down by those they deem under themselves.
    HOWEVER, VERY FEW ELVES LEFT IN LORD OF THE RINGS FEEL THIS WAY!!!! Tolkien made sure to write them well enough to have ACTUALLY LEARNED FROM THEIR MISTAKES. Elrond and Galadriel especially specifically go out of their way to be more wise than basically anyone else in the group at any given time (except Gandalf) by admitting that it IS the hobbits, the little people, the underdogs, who are the most likely to succeed. They, as elves, have actually seen their own failures, and instead of continuing to entrust power to nobody but themselves, understand that they are actually some of the worst ones to hold that power, and so willingly give up the task of taking care of the ring, EVEN THOUGH THEY WANT IT.
    Huff. Sorry, just a big Tolkien fan. I don't want Tolkien's elves being compared to shitty knife-ear Aeldari.

      GW had the Ynnari band all eldar together to fight chaos and... then forgot about them.
      It's not the Eldar's fault that their contemporary lore is stale, it's GW's fault. The Eldar has to stay as the haughty fools because otherwise there would be one less faction to get stomped by Space Marines to make them look good.
      Eldar prophecies? Clearly bad for everyone, must be stopped. Eldar combatants? Only manages to occupy and hold places with trickery only until one Space Marines Sergeant realises their entire trick, at which point the course of combat will be reversed and the Eldar routed.
      Their holier-than-thou haughty attitude makes it all the better when they get stomped into the dirt. A shard of their War God exists only to destroy enough things until our valiant band of heroes can rally together to take it down with spunk and wits. Hell, people laughed when a Phoenix Lord fell to a tank or whatever.
      They're just plot devices. Set dressing. Saturday morning cartoon mooks.

      Lukewarm take:
      Tolkien was the only author who managed to write elves likeable, both as a race and as characters.
      Everybody after him either tried to subvert the trope or humanize them. Which wouldn't be that bad, but they had to leave some og elf trait as a point of reference and everybody decided that it should be their patronizing attitude.
      In lotr their attitude isn't just a trope, it's a fairly justified view on dwarves and men, who historically love to "fuck around and find out".

    • @Salamandra40k
      @Salamandra40k 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@schweppes1313 I'd argue dwarves love to fuck around and find out because of their historic feuds with elves, which they very much tend to pass down to their descendants on purpose.
      Men? Yeah, they had a few problems, but not so much. Men tend to forget, being comparitively short lived, and thus dont mind trading and setting up relationships with elves...even if the elves dont forget what the men of the past did. I would say that really just comes down to a misunderstanding of a kind- elves being immortal and not understanding HOW to forget, and men being particularly susceptible to what elves view as like, barbarism, or the evils of Sauron (oh, but they turn a blind eye to their own kind who ever committed misdeeds).
      Anyways, point is, elves are a bit uppity for a few reasons, but like I said, by the time of the actual plot of Lord of The Rings, many elves tend to realize that their time is over, and that the deeds of the past are behind them. They matured, and have accepted that middle earth is for men, not elves, and so they leave (or dont).

    I can't help but feel that part of the Eldar hate I see a lot on the 40k community is that the Eldar have shit story and shit writing. Just look at how the Ynnari storyline went, what few books that go in -depth about the faction, and compare all that to the earliest snippets of lore. The Eldar were the OG ancient technologically advanced race with powers and abilities beyond that of every other faction, with an agenda that was poorly understood but clearly something on a massive scale. They were mysterious, aloof, but not necessarily hostile, and while they were cryptic, it was usually for some unspecified reason beyond "We're better than you so we won't tell you."
    Now with the Necrons and arguably some of the updates to the Space Marines, they're not that, they're just vagrant pointy-eared space Elves who just float through the void. They're not even the greatest psykers anymore. A lot what's made them unique has been shared with other factions or just dummied down, and don't even get me started on how they're shown in most BL literature. How many Avatars of Khaine have been defeated now? How many brutal assaults have happened on a Craftworld? How many battles were royally screwed by a faction who can predict and alter the future? It's just bad all around.

    I think the weird thing about how GW does Eldar is that for a race that's supposed to be so arrogant they...don't actually come across that arrogant?
    Like, from my experience they spend so much effort telling everyone how inferior they are, that it actually makes them come across as incredibly insecure instead. Like they don't just show their arrogance with subtle power moves or something, they just have them tell you they feel superior you at every opportunity. It makes them sound less like "tragic ancient alien beings" and more "awkward teenager talking smack about your mom in a fortnite match so he can look cool to his friends"
    That might actually be why my favourite Eldar character isn't even an Eldar. It's Kerilian from Verminitide. Because she *does* use her posturing of superiority to mask her insecurities meaning the character ends up coming across exactly how the writers intended her to.

They viewed their real life being their immortal soul in the warp, and their physical body was like a dream to them. When they reincarnated in the material world, they would live one type of life, perfect one skill, being either light or dark or something i between. Over many lives, they come to a greater understanding of their eternal existence. That was of course before Slaanesh. I had no idea about the Fulgrim book.
    Holy shit man.
    Why does GW write the faction that should think and percieve reality the most accurately as snobby dumbasses?
    Between the Pheonix lords and the wraith constructs theres alot of potential for fun with the Eldar.
    Instead they just repeat variations of the Eldar from Dawn of War 1.

    Hot take: the (craftworld) Eldar are fully the good guys.
    They usually get blamed for three things:
    1. Birthing Slaanesh
    2. Being overly cryptic and arrogant
    3. Being a dick to humans.
    But:
    1. They didn't. The dark eldar did. Craftworld eldar are the ones that turned their back on their sinful society and left before Slaanesh was born because they saw it coming and sought to prevent it. Blaming craftworld eldar for Slaanesh is like blaming Vulkan for the Horus Heresy because 'humans committed the Horus Heresy'.
    2. Why wouldn't they be? Things always go wrong in books and stories because it would be boring if the Eldar were portrayed as in control as they're supposed to be in lore, but if you're the only one who can straight-up see the future you've got a whole extra sense compared to anyone else, and they are supposed to be objectively wiser and infinitely more experienced than anybody else - they're just never portrayed that way. It's not arrogance not to explain everything you do to a blind, ten-year old child. You don't have *time* to explain a whole new perspective on life to those smooth brains.
    3. That one gets me the most, because I feel like that's just human perspective kicking in. Most Warhammer fans are humans, so humans are just the 'us' faction and automatically assumed to be the protagonist. But imagine everything from the standpoint of the eldar: there's this young race, volatile, angry, extremely expansionist, and absolutely *hateful* towards anything that isn't them, including yourself. To the eldar, the only difference between humans and orcs is that humans actively and irrationally hate instead of just loving violence for its own sake. Humanity wants to see the eldar dead. Why should they be nice to people who want to kill them? The line "Eldar would gladly sacrifice a thousand humans to save a single eldar" as a way to show they're evil always had me raise an eyebrow. Your average human commissar would sacrifice a thousand humans to *kill* a single eldar, how is that better?

      For the last sentence it’s the value of the life never forget the biggest advantage the imperium of man has is numbers and considering that they don’t value a individual life so a few 10,000 humans are nothing to imperium when a small hive world can have up to 6billion ppl n largest hive worlds have over a 100 billion also the codex make it to where those 10k soldiers are going to charge regardless

  • @DracoMaverick

    It does feel like they purposely write them to be incompetent and hubris ridden for the sake of making the Imperium look good at times. Hell the poor Avatar of Khaine, a shard of a war god, is just a glorified jobber. But even then I still like them for the aesthetic, the fallen from grace lore, and the cool almost magic tech they gave. But even I will acknowledge they can be kinda pricks.

    I have always loved the eldar models since 2nd edition (which is just as well as many haven't changed since then...). They really did nail them aesthetically, but for whatever reason have chosen to write them so badly. I made my own craftworld for this reason - they are astoundingly stupidly written all the time ao much I had to come up with something myself to just make them somewhat reasonable. At this point the awful writing and lack of range updates means they aren't played much. People then use as an argument to say they should just be left to die off. Feels like GW want that in a way too. Nevermind what they did to revitalise necrons and the like. A dying civilisation is a great place for interesting narative, but it always comes down to Eldar allow horrendous things to happen because it saves 10 Eldar lives at some point. There is so much more they could do.

    Space Marines, "Fuck you, sinceyou mentioned it, i'm going to do it right now!" **Does it and causes mass suffering**
    Space Marines, "This is your fault Elves that we did it, when you explicitly said not too, because you didn't EXPLAIN why!! Definitely not us for doing it after you warned us!!"
    The Emperor of Mankind, "Why are these elves so relatable, and not my own people?"
