I'm a school parapro who works with usually autistic, usually non-speaking children (and am also autistic myself). I'm glad you explained the "non-speaking vs. nonverbal" thing because I've heard people mention it before but not been sure why "non speaking" was better. And non-speaking folks DO understand so much! The first little girl I ever worked with didn't talk, but she was so smart- one of my most vivid memories of working with her was when she was when she was crying and upset and I got down and asked her what was wrong. She stopped crying immediately and looked shocked, like no one had ever bothered to ask her that before. 🥺💜
